Rafe Varik

The troublemaker. The risk taker. The sexy club owner full of wicked promises.

Rafe has devoted his immortal existence to pleasure and causing mischief.

The only ones who can depend on him are his brothers. Of course, that’s very much a Varik thing.

But when the leader of the Arsenault clan specifically requests Rafe’s help in tracking down a killer, he can’t say no.

Sure, Rafe claims he’s doing it for his family. They’ve attracted too many enemies and could use a few allies.

That’s not the whole truth, though.

There’s something about Philippe Arsenault that draws Rafe in. He wants more of Philippe. The vampire leaves him longing for another second in his presence, another taste of his lips, another caress of those perfect fingers.

Yet when it’s all over, what will become of Philippe and Rafe. Because Philippe will always be an Arsenault, and Rafe will always be a Varik.

Saving Rafe is the second book in an MM paranormal romance series that has vampires, betrayal, annoying brothers, music, heartbreak, hope, sexy times, and a pair of star-crossed lovers.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series "Claiming Marcus"  even though I found it a bit too fast-paced for my liking. Still, it was a nice read and I fell in love with all the background characters....such as Rafe. He was pretty great in the first book, and so I was really looking forward to finding out which man would bring this player to his knees.

https://www.google.com/search?q=this should be good gif

What I found out though, was that there was much more to Rafe then meets the eye. I never would have figured he was carrying around so much insecurity.

He really does believe he is nothing more than a player and a joker...but that is so far from the truth. He is just as important as the rest of his brothers and all these men are willing to give their lives for one another... and for others they care for.

When Philippe, clan leader of the Arsenault clan requests Rafe's help with tracking one of his missing clan-members, Rafe can't decline. Keeping the peace between the clans and making new alliances is what is important right now.

However, when Rafe and Philippe meet, they feel an instant attraction for each other. One that won't be ignored but one that also complicates things. They are both from different clans, and Rafe has vowed to always put his brothers first....before anything, even his own happiness.

Again this story is pretty heavy on the insta-love/lust. I didn't mind it as much this time around, because we are talking about two vamps falling in love. For some reason that is just a bit more acceptable to me.

We also get to know more about the brothers, whom I am starting to like more and more. Especially Bel and Winter. Bel had some awesome surprises up his sleeve in this one, which made me love him even more, and Winter is definitely the epitome of mystery. So, of course, I want his book the most.

I also want to give some extra credit to Aiden. I already liked him a lot in the first book but he really came through in this one, and so I am hoping there will be a HEA for him in the future.

4,25 stars from me ...

When Rafe went to a meeting with Philippe (a clan leader), Philippe wasn’t at all what he had expected. Phillippe was young when he was turned to a vampire and then adding a couple of centuries but there was a weight to his power and Rafe wanted to know…

He wanted to know what was behind the worry clouding his lovely green eyes. He wanted to know more about the thinly masked power he could feel rippling from his handsome form. He simply wanted to know more about him, and it had been too damn long since Rafe had been curious about any creature—human or vampire.

Rafe was exactly what Philippe pictured he would be; Tall, Dark, and Develish. But the thing was if he could trust Rafe with his secrets…

If others knew the truth of their clan, discovered their secrets, they would instantly become vulnerable. He had to protect his family first, his people. Philippe promised to keep them all safe.

Told in dual POV, 3rd person. It’s the second installment in the "Lords of Discord" series and I think you would enjoy it more if you read it in order. I like all the Variks’ brothers and their bickering and back and fro! They all likable, it’s just you can’t not adore them all and I can’t wait to read the next brother’s story! I liked the pacing, it was good-written and an emotional read. Overall, I had a good time reading this and hope you enjoy it as well!

As much as I enjoyed the writing, I kind of expected more. I liked the story, don't get me wrong. I just didn't get to love it. It worked better for me than the first book, but I wanted more suspense and angst. Maybe it is wrong to expect too much. Maybe it's just me not feeling it.

This was Rafe's story, one of the 4 brothers and vampires in the Varik clan. He falls in love with another vampire. They were pretty hot together, but for some reason I needed much more. More angst, more action!! We get a fight, but it came a little too late for my taste. This story dragged. It felt unnecessary long.

I am curious about Bel and Winter, so I think I will read the next books at one point.

Just like book one, this is a high octane experience with plenty of excitement to keep the narrative rolling along.

Unlike Claiming Marcus though, both the MCs in this are vampires and we get to read along as the hedonistic twin Rafe Varik meets a man who turns his world upside down.

Even with a clear indication of who the bad guys were going to be, it didn't matter. The journey was enough to make this another quality paranormal romance from Jocelynn.

I loved Phillippe, his golden exterior a match for the kindness of his heart but also hiding a strength of will and a desire to totally own Rafe's heart.

Loved seeing Aiden back, am totally intrigued as to who will be Bel's love interest and cannot wait for Winter's book!

Another winner from Jocelynn Drake, off the top of my head I think this was my thirty second book by her, and they never get old.

Saving Rafe is the second book in her new paranormal series Lord of Discord, about the vampire Varik brothers.

Rafe is the mischievous, troublemaker, club owner who lives for pleasures and parties until he meets Phillippe Arsenault the clan leader who asks for his help.

I found Phillippe to be very shy considering he is older than Rafe and he is secretive about himself and his clan.

When it comes to Rafe, the phrase "never judge a book by its cover" comes to mind, there are two sides to Rafe the one everyone knows and behind closed doors he is lonely.

I loved the adventure I went on with Rafe and Phillippe, the mystery behind the murders and disappearance of Phillippe's clan members and the growing romance between these two which they fight hard to deny as it can never work.

What I adore about Jocelynn's writing even more than her romances is how she builds the unbreakable bonds between her men, not only the bond between the brothers but the bond they all have with Aiden, for example when Rafe sees Aiden he breaks down in his arms, that brought tears to my eyes, then the outsiders they bring into the family from Ethan to Rafe's trio to Phillippe and there will be more with Bel and Winter.

I love all the banter, bickering and teasing between Marcus, Rafe, Bel, Winter and Ethan and the showdown in this was epic, GO BEL.

The relationship Rafe has with Lola reminded me a lot of Lucifer and Maze in the early days anyway.

I was hooked from the first page till the last, loved every single minute of this.

I am super excited for the rest of this series, I wonder what Bel will get up to next.

OK, so I LOVE this series. If you're looking for some badass vampires, with excellent world building - their powers, their hierarchy, their own politics system, etc. and if you want a story with great, varied, real characters - you've got to get caught up on this series.

While I think this book could maybe be read as a standalone, I highly highly recommend you start with the first book of the series. You get to meet all the brothers, learn about their pasts, their different personalities, and get the groundwork for the building conflict between the Varik clan, other clans in the area, and the Ministry.

Rafe is the party-having brother, the one who always seems up for a fun time, takes risks, and does what he wants. However, there's so much depth to him with how much he cares for his family and his friends, and his own insecurities, and I loved that we learned so much about him. And I love that he was so perfect for Philippe.

Philippe, clan ruler for the Arsenault family, comes to Rafe, asking him for help in figuring out who is after his clan members, and Rafe agrees to help. The connection between the two is intense, hot, and passionate. But both have their alliances to their families first, and they must figure out how to include a relationship when their clans might not always agree on how to do things.

Relationship aside, I also loved all the interaction between the brothers and their friends and family. I love that we got some great moments with Ethan still, learned more about Bel and Winter, and getting to see the Varik family become the clan they truly are, was great to read about.

I can't wait for Bel's book - and can't wait for more and to see what will come when it's Varik's vs. the Ministry.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly would have liked this more if I didn't listen to the audio but at least the rest of the books in this series use another narrator.

I am super intrigued for the rest of the brothers' stories (and Daddy Aiden).

There’s a good book in here. I liked the characters and the story but...

Why is there always a but?

It’s slow.

The first half in particular is so drawn out. I really wanted to like it more. And I should have done but for so long it just wasn’t going anywhere.

Also it was so obvious who the villains were.

Hopefully Bel’s will be better.

I absolutely adored this book. I am really loving this series.

This second book is about Rafe, second oldest (technically, being some minutes older than Bel) brother of the Varik family.

About a month or so after the events of the first book, when Marcus asks Rafe to be the one to meet with Philippe Arsenault, the head of the Arsenault clan, Rafe thinks it's ridiculous and that he's only good for partying, debauchery and sex, not politics. But he does it anyway, and when he meets Philippe there are instant sparks between these two.

I loved their chemistry, I felt that instant connection, and I loved their scenes together. There was minimal angst between them in this, but what there was was understandable and thankfully wasn't made into melodrama. Their sex scenes were hot as well, I loved them.

There's some more clan intrigue in this one, with several members of Philippe's clan having gone missing and/or were killed and Rafe being asked to help figure out how to find them and figure out who is taking/killing them.

Plus, there are changes to the Varik family for the better in this, and I loved where Rafe and Philippe ended up. I loved the secondary character as well, such as Lola and Gideon, and getting to see even more of Aiden (who...I kinda hope gets a book after the brothers do and gets to fall in love again...I'm kinda hoping we get a book for Aiden.)

I'm excited for more books in this series. Bel is next, and I can't wait to see who it will be to get through Bel's analytical, scientific brain to get at his emotions and let him relax from that analytical brain of his.

Two massive thumbs up from me, I loved this. Highly recommended!

Ok.

Rafe Varik

The troublemaker. The risk taker. The sexy club owner full of wicked promises.

Rafe has devoted his immortal existence to pleasure and causing mischief.

That’s the beginning of the blurb. That is who I knew Rafe to be and that is mostly what I expected from his book.

I did not get that. At all really.

From the beginning this was a totally different Rafe and totally not at all what I expected.

Am I disappointed? A little. I wanted a little bit of the wild brother but what I ended up with worked, just not the way I thought it would.

This was 100% a love at first sight romance but not necessarily an easy one. I liked that it was that instalove that is best done in Paranormal Romances but this didn’t just have them falling into bed, it was more. I loved the connection they felt toward each other. It had a bit of a star-crossed lover feel to it and even though I would have loved a bit more time to see why they felt it, it worked and I just rolled with it. They are Vampires after all.

I loved the politics going on in this one but how it all played out hurt my soul a bit. So much loss.

Aidan stole the show for me and I just can’t wait to see more of him in the next books. Grown up or not, these boys need their Father.

Overall, a great second book to this series even if it wasn’t at all what I thought it would be.

Rich Lore. Steamy. Action-Adventure.

Saving Rafe is an original, fast paced, hot AF , fun, MM story with a HFN/HEA. It is also, an awesome follow-up to Claiming Marcus, book 1 , in the Lords of Discord series.

I'm hooked to the lore and world-built around this series. I liked the little bit of dark, violent, raw and grittiness of it. These vampires definitely do not glitter in the sun. They're old school fierce, sexy and deadly blood drinkers.

This book focus on Rafe and Philippe's romance . Yet, the other Varik's Brothers play major roles in the overall plotline.

Technically, you can read Saving Rafe as standalone. Yet, you'll enjoy it more if you read books in chronological order , as books follow a "real-life" continuous timeline.

Book two in the Lords of Discord Series is about Rafe, half of the twin Varik brothers and picks up right after Claiming Marcus.

The four brothers had always been close and eager to protect one another. No matter who or what they faced, no brother ever stood alone and vowed to uphold to that when they were turned to vampires.
Rafe Varik is the mischief of the family Rafe’s entire raison d’être was to feed, fuck, and party, but under his sarcastic and partying ways Rafe is full of self loathe, thinks himself unworthy of love and is convinced he is the most lesser of the Varik clan. But Rafe is so much more and the superficial clown he depicts, taking care of Lola, Ryder, and Gideon his constant companions who keep moving with him.

Philippe Arsenault is a clan leader and seeking for help from the Variks, specifically from Rafe. He, together with Jullien, his close confidante, has come to ask for help because someone is killing off his clan members. Rafe is stunned when he first sets eyes on the clan leader Philippe Arsenault was sunlight, golden and pure, bravely holding back the darkness. But Philippe is equally impressed with the “tall, dark, and devilish” Rafe and longed to pin Rafe to the nearest flat surface and make the most delicious moans rise from those lush parted lips.
While they investigate the sexual tension between Philippe and Rafe is palpable and keeps rising.

The culprit of the killings within the Arsenault clan was quite easy to spot, but I did not understand why the vampires were kidnapped and only found dead a week later. It was a bit unsatisfactory when that was not explained. Will that be in the next book?

While the investigation takes an unexpected turn, the Variks decide to become a clan with Aiden as their leader. With the approval of Aiden and Marcus, the Variks go the battle for the Arsenaults and In a matter of a few months, the Variks had taken out two of the most powerful clans in all of the Americas, It clearly looked like the Variks were making a move for more power, and the one group taking the biggest offense to that was the Ministry.

So far I've enjoyed the Varik brothers and I can’t wait to read Bel and Winter's story. But also am I wondering what is in store for Ryder and Gideon. And Lola, but also Julien.
Even Aiden, will he as well find a companion?

This is the 2nd book of the series and yes I read it out of order. Surprisingly, I didn't feel too lost. Everything that happened in the first book was explained in this one, but not in that annoying way that makes everything seem repetitious. It was nicely done.

I will say that this is a Insta-love/lust book and after reading the 1st book I think that this may be a theme for the series. The romance did not get me in this book. Nope, it was too quick and I wasn't feeling it. However, the family bond, the jokes, and characters made this book a 4 starrer. Actually it was the ONLY reason I read the 1st book after this.

I actually really like Rafe! I think he's my favourite of the brother's - well, until we find out more about Winter anyway!.

The ongoing 'big bad' plot continued really nicely and pulled in another Vampire Clan which introduced Philippe (he's now Phil to me because everyone else's names are so short that reading Philippe just feels really out of place!) and I liked how he and Rafe developed their relationship. Both of them have some big insecurities but they feel deeply so their relationship ups and downs were really engaging.

I love how the Varik Clan is expanding and how we're getting to know more character's, but I'm super curious to read about Bel next because the two wolves have got me intrigued and I need to know more. I'm still convinced that Winter is something more than a Vampire though...and there's this super ominous feeling that something really bad is coming the Varik's way and soon.

It was a very good sequel, Rafe and Phillipe were great characters and their relationship was lovely and even though they got together fast and the I love yous felt a bit rushed, I still think it sort of made sense.

The mystery of the person behind the murders was a bit obvious and yet I still enjoyed it. It’s a very classical vampire-lore book but with a lot of more politics and power-hungry characters.

I just don’t think I’ll continue reading the series, I don’t care about the other brothers or Aiden

Rafe and Philippe

May 5, 1843

We did meet Rafe and his exceptional family already in book one. There is quite a story to tell about him. The transformation was wonderful to watch.

We make a jump to October 14, 2019

Being part of the Varik clan (Rafe prefers ‘family’) gives him great responsibility.
He has to talk to Philippe Arsenault, the leader of the clan. Both clans need an ally.
The Varik’s has a target on their back after they attacked and destroyed every member of the Black Wolf clan and the Arsenault’s clan needs protection because they’ve been attacked by unknown forces.

Rafe never met Philippe, when he finally set eyes on him, he was stunned, there stood a beautiful young looking, slender blond sunshine of a vampire. Rafe certainly didn’t underestimate Philippe’s strength, is was palpable. Their contrast was amazing, Rafe was big, dark and devilish and Philippe more like an Angel.
Philippe needs proof of sincerity from the Varik clan, so he can trust them.
Finding a missing young clan member would be it. And only Rafe will communicate and get access to the Arsenault clan. Rafe is intrigued by Philippe and wants to know him and his powers better.

The Arsenault's clan has secrets and those can’t be exposed, Philippe is afraid every vampire will want to destroy them. When he finally reveals his powers to Rafe, Rafe is in awe and impressed. It makes him even more in fall in love.
The Arsenault's are in danger, Philippe is desperate, he can't seem to protect them.
While trying to uncover the threat to Philippe’s clan, Rafe and Philippe open their heart to each other, only it could never be forever, with two clans between them. And leaving their family isn’t up for discussion.
Rafe has a feeling the threat is closer than it looks.

What an exceptional story, widely and with depth developed. All the members of the Varik clan are one of a kind, all have their gifts, all characters are well developed, the all would die for each other.
The sexual sparkling tension between Rafe and Philippe was in one word delicious. When they did come together it was like ‘oh my goodness’ highly, highly arousing.

In the middle of all the storming turmoils, there are Rafe and Philippe, steady strong and determined.

It felt like one long lyric or poem. Every definition of the environments was stunning described
The way of storytelling was stunning, I was glued to the pages.
Philippe was a kind and graceful personality, with a soft and gentle voice. The french whispers from his mouth ran straight to my heart. Rafe the caring beauty with a big heart and great gifts. When he plays violin something magical happens. There is so much going on in this story.
Feelings all over, intensity and excitement made this an excellent story
A series I highly recommend.

3,5 stars!

I liked the second book of the series much more than the first one and the main reason is probably Rafe's character. We met him in the first book and I couldn't wait to see what's behind the playboy mask he wore all the time. To my surprise, there was much much more.

The author did a great job connecting the audience to Rafe. His devotion to his family, to his friends, and especially to Philippe's cause was heart-warming. It took me a while to warm up to Philippe's character, though. His constant changes made me questioning and I couldn't decide if that makes him more interesting or just annoying. After some revealed secrets about his past, I was solid in my liking.

I loved Rafe and Philippe's chemistry from the first half of the book. In the second half, the chemistry kind of changed. I was expecting more sparks and some kind of intense relationship instead of calm and sweet interactions. There was angst, but it was character-wise, not relationship-wise.

The story itself was very interesting and I really liked the secondary characters, especially Lola. Towards the end, it dragged a little bit, and maybe if the book was a chapter or two shorter it would have been better.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading the book. I'm very curious about Aiden's character.

This series is just so INTRIGUING! I love the world-building and the politics that are coming into play more with the clans and the families. Rafe's story is wonderful, giving us the mystery of the disappearances within the Arsenault clan and the secrets that Philippe is keeping as the head of the clan. The scenes with Rafe and Philippe were hot and wonderful and you could feel their connection. The secondary characters are also fascinating and I am excited to see where the rest of the series takes us.

I liked this one so much more than I liked the first book in the series.

Rafe was intriguing in the first book but in this one we got to see a whole new side of him. He's full of doubt and love and he's fiercely loyal. So far, he's probably my favorite brother.

I'm still not a fan of the grittiness of it all, but I'm slowly coming around for it.

This second book in The Lords of Discord series focuses on playboy brother Rafe. After the Varik family’s defeat of the Black Wolf clan in book one, the Ministry’s focus is on them, other clans are nervous and Rafe is bored with his club owner debauched lifestyle.

When a request comes in from the Arsenault clan for help in locating a missing clan member Rafe is dispatched to meet him as Marcus is busy dealing with the Ministry. Rafe is immediately intrigued by Phillipe Arsenault and the feeling is mutual. As the story develops so does their relationship. All is not smooth on the path to love however as the problems with the clan and other rumblings in the vampire world in Hartford, CT interfere with the relationship. My heart ached for Rafe at various points in the story. And that connection is the sure sign of a well written book.

There is of course intrigue, as well as suspense, battles, snark, love, humor and steam. The kind of well-rounded story we’ve come to expect from Jocelyn Drake. The character development is well done. The story arc is well paced and the suspense builds well. The mystery of the villain stalking Phillipe’s clan throws enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing though I was sure of the bad guy pretty early on, despite the other viable suspects. I guess partly because I didn’t like that person and wanted to see them get their just desserts.

The climatic battle has some interesting turns (I really love Bel) but I kind of wish the scene had been longer and the villains suffered more harm. (hmmm, I think I’m a bit blood thirsty!)

The ending is sweet and there is a bit of foreshadowing for book three. I am anxiously anticipating it.

*I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my objective review *

This is the second book in this series and in my opinion it makes sense to read them in order.

Rafe is an interesting character and Philippe is his match ... although there seems to be a bit of a change in his character during the book.
The story is well done and all in all I liked it better than the first book.
I was frustrated that the family was missing for a big part of the book. And although it is always said how important the family is for all of them, they all feel quite lonely and have a lot of secrets from each other.

Nevertheless this was a really good read and I can't wait to get my hands on Bels and Winters story

4.5 stars - I found this much more enjoyable the second time around! Be aware that this is the most insta-y of insta-love stories that I have ever read. That said, I really felt a connection between Philippe and Rafe that I didn’t necessarily feel the first time I read their story. I liked that there wasn’t as much going on with the Ministry and we got to focus on how the two MCs connected. To me, they just fit so well together and gave each other what the other needed. I love the interactions of the Varik family and I’m looking forward to rereading the rest of the series. ♥️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️♥️

I didn’t enjoy this installment of the Lords of Discord series as much as I did book one, Claiming Marcus. Most of this book was slow and steady. The ending was fabulous. I’m glad Aiden has returned and I hope he continues to play an important part in the Varik family. It sounds like Bel’s story will be next and I’m really looking forward to it.

Such a good series

Again, I'm well aware that I am more than a little late to the party but god these books are so good. Especially with a spin-off series soon to be released, now is the time to pick up this series if you're like me and have been living under a rock.

There's not too much I can say about this book. If you've read the previous book and are familiar with Rafe, this is pretty much what I would expect his romance to be like. He needs someone to balance him out while still being on his level and that is definitely Philippe. There were some ups and downs but I wouldn't call any of the angst. It's more like the typical things that come from a budding relationship. Especially one in this world where alliances entitles mean something. Their romance is very sweet, very sensual, and very hot. Seriously, the smut gets an A++.

The plot isn't lacking either. Yes there is some crossover for the first story but the mystery in this one is still very self-contained. I liked how the culprit is both who you expected but not immediately. Personally, I prefer when books have a mystery that I can follow along with and possibly solve. The action scenes were also amazing. I don't think they were bad in the previous book but I do think they are a little bit stronger in this one, If only because there were so many characters to keep track of and not wants to become hard to follow. I also liked how we got to see more of Bel's power because it's adorable and it's just as cute here. And vicious.

All in all solid book, great series, especially if you are a vampire lover. Five stars because I can't recommend it enough.

Well, I liked this better than the first book. I liked how Rafe's personality was different than Marcus the protector but at the same time Rafe has his own "band of family" that he fiercely protect. I liked that Rafe and Philippe shared this traits. I really liked the fact that Philippe seemed to tone down Rafe's needs for decadence. Yep, I really liked these two together.

I was also curious about Aiden, the Varik stepfather, especially now he had more scenes.

Next book is about Bel and it's M/M/M. I don't usually read this genre, but I don't want to miss anything of Bel's story. Let's see how it goes.

This series is amazing! Okay, I am only on book 2, but I really enjoyed those books. The Arsenault clan has a problem and need the Varik’s help. The second Rafe and Phillippe meet, the sparks fly and for a little while they both try to avoid the inevitable. In working together, the two clans are brought together over a shared enemy. This story moves forward the intrigue between the clans and the politics of the vampires. I can’t wait to start Bel’s story!

SOOO not the book I was expecting, and while I feel some minor disappointment in that, I can appreciate that sometimes it’s better to get what we need instead of what we thought we wanted.

This Rafe was so much deeper and had so many layers to him, which made me love him so much more. Even though there was an element of instalove, it still worked for me because circumstances kept them from getting physical and allowed us to feel the stronger emotions developing.

The way this played out was so heartbreaking, but probably the only way it could have gone down. Maybe a tad obvious on the bad guy, but not a big deal to me.

Loved seeing Aiden again, cause he’s such a great character. But the real scene stealer of this book, for me, was Winter. I don’t know if it’s the mystery, or him being such a badass, but I CAN”T WAIT FOR HIS BOOK!!! Every time he was on page, he just captured more of my attention, and I actually feel bad that Rafe and Phillipe maybe didn’t get as much love from me because of it. (Oops not my fault Winter is so intriguing lol)

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy.
