➕ What I liked :

Tall heroine. 👍

Older heroine (46) 👍

Intriguing and interesting characters and plot.

Good chemistry and romantic build up.

A good hero even if he was a little bit presumptuous at the beginning of the story.

A supportive and caring hero (helping the heroine with her fears/anxiety etc.)

Interesting side characters.

The mystery part was interesting and not too obvious.

➖ What I disliked:

The ending felt a little bit rushed and some issues were solved a little too fast/easy.

The side story with the side characters made the plot/story a tiny bit disjointed.

This has been an excellent series so far. Although we don’t see Draven and the previous survivors in this book, we follow Phin, the newly minted ninth Duke of Mayne. Phin was the negotiator in the group and was recently elevated to the Dukedom after the deaths of his five brothers. Phin does not want to be the Duke but he does want the Wanton Widow. Annabelle, Countess of Longstowe is 15 years older than Phin and has quite the reputation. After a rough start Phin agrees to help her find her daughter. Annabelle’s horrible dead husband sent her daughter to a home when she was two years old because she had been born mentally handicapped. Along the way it seems that someone might be trying to kill Phin and Phin has to battle the demons of Annabelle’s past to find their way to happily ever after.

This was missing two things from this book. This was an ARC so I don’t if they will be in the finished product. First the prologue. I had read a prologue at the end of the last book or one of the emails the author sent out and I remembered what happened so that was fine. Without it , especially if someone hasn’t read the whole series, I think people will be a little lost. It felt like being dropped into the middle the story. The second thing missing was an epilogue. This book definitely has need of an epilogue. What happens after they marry? Do they have a child together? I was left feeling a little unsatisfied.

I loved the story though. I love an older experienced heroine in general and it’s even better when the hero is younger than the heroine. I thought 15 years was a lot, but I don’t like that much age difference when the hero is older either. I loved Phin, he’s a a kind hero and I just adored him. And Annabelle is a broken heroine. Her husband was a cruel and abusive. Together they were perfect. I did like the little hint that the next book will be about Colin.

As the youngest of five sons, Phineas Duncombe never expected to find himself saddled with the title of Duke of Mayne. But now that he has the dukedom he never wanted, Phin must make the most of it. The rather mysterious circumstances surrounding his latest brother's death lead Phin to London to question the Countess of Longstowe, one of the last people to see his idiot brother alive. But the lady known as the Wanton Widow is not at all what Phin expected and he finds himself intrigued and trying to seduce her for himself, despite his best intentions. The countess isn't interested in bedding him, but asks Phin to help her find the daughter her late husband had taken away from her. Phin may be powerful enough to help and he can't deny such a heartfelt request, but a couple days alone in the country prove challenging, due not only to his burgeoning feelings for the lovely countess, but also because it appears someone is trying to kill him.

Annabel, Countess of Longstowe, was barely of age when she was married off to the much older Earl. She hasn't mourned the loss of her cruel husband. She's only in her mid-forties and enjoys the freedom of her widowhood, vowing never to be under any man's control ever again. Her only desire is to find her daughter and for that she needs the Duke of Mayne. As she spends more time with him on their quest, she finds herself fighting a losing battle against her attraction to Phin and at risk of losing her heart.

I loved Phin. He was a fabulous hero and I really want a Phineas for myself now. He was really almost too good for Annabel and it took me some time to warm to her, but I did eventually come to like her. This was another great installment to this series and I can't wait for the next one already.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Series: The Survivors #6
Publication Date: 9/3/19
Number of Pages: 249

The Survivors are the twelve remaining members of a suicide squad formed to help defeat Napoleon at any cost. Eighteen members of that squad didn’t return and those who did have vowed to assure they aren’t forgotten. They also still protect each other.

Phineas (Phin) Leopold Duncombe is, unexpectedly, the ninth Duke of Mayne. He should never have been a duke. He never wanted to be a duke. He still doesn’t want to be a duke but knows he has no choice. Although the mantle chaffs a bit, he fully intends to do his duty to the estate and his tenants. Phin had four older brothers, there was certainly no reason for him to suspect that he’d ever be a duke – but here he is. This dukedom is doomed – cursed – because each of his brothers died because of some stupid, totally preventable accident. His sisters seem to be the only safe ones – he has two of those – one who hasn’t made her come out and one who is married with two daughters and a son.

Annabel, Lady Longstowe, was married off at barely eighteen to a cold, cruel man who was old enough to be her grandfather. He abused her in every way possible until he finally did her the favor of dying. After all of those years of sexual, mental and physical abuse, she didn’t know what to do with herself and made a couple of mistakes in the friends she chose. Even though she wasn’t promiscuous or wanton, she earned the nickname – the Wanton Widow and was ostracized from society. If she goes out, women avoid her and gossip about her while the men ogle her. One of the cruelest things her husband ever did to her was taking her baby daughter away and not telling her what he’d done with her. Annabel has looked for the baby – who would now be twenty – for years and has been totally unsuccessful. She needs help – powerful help.

Phin’s brother Richard died only a few weeks ago and he’s still trying to come to grips with it. He’d spent weeks shadowing Richard trying to keep him from suffering a freak accident like his other brothers – the one night he wasn’t there – the unthinkable happened. Phin is floundering a bit and decides to go to the home of the Wanton Widow to see what happened on his brother’s last night alive. At least, that is what he told himself when he showed up at her door. She quickly put him in his place and he left with his tail between his legs assuming he’d never see or hear from her again.

Annabel quickly realizes that the powerful help she needs might have just walked out her door. She decides that she’ll approach him, offer him anything – including herself if he’ll help her find her daughter.

I loved Phin. He is one of the most honorable, loving, sweetest heroes I read in a while. I also liked Annabel and could feel her pain. As a bonus, we also get an additional romance that is lovely.

I could have easily said this was a 5-star book had it not been for the glaring inaccuracy that the villain/plot was based upon. The sad thing is – it could so easily have been fixed with just five minutes worth of research. There is absolutely no way that Phin’s title could have been inherited by the one mentioned in the story.

It is definitely a good read – lighthearted, romantic, exciting – I enjoyed the story.

My review :

Will age difference tear them apart?

I am realizing that the more I read tales about older heroes, the more I love it.
The characters more mature react so differently from their fresh-put-out-the nursery counterparts.
I just loved this double romance. The four protagonists know what they want and they go after it.
Phin never wanted to become a duke, so he is still the kind and caring man he was before this title felt on his shoulders. With Annabel, it was lust at first sight but soon it moved to something deeper. He must first crumble the wall of steel around her heart. Hopefully he is a stubborn and patiente man.
Annabel was left scarred in her soul by her late husband abuse, since she never was able to find peace and after the first mistakes of her early widowhood. She decided men were not for the life of her.
It was until a man too young for her sees through herself and seems to hold all the answers to her happiness. And it is scaring when her freedom as a woman is in the balance.

Phin and Annabel’s journey would not have been complete without the romance between Meg, Annabel’s housekeeper and Reynolds, Phin’s valet. Those two enlightened the plot and highlighted the main couple’s qualities.
Both are great characters, Meg is such a refreshing character, I loved her from her very first scene. Clever and reasonable. Having made her own’s way despite her differences. Reynolds not once made her feel peculiar, he immediately accepted her for who she was. Even refusing to see her disparaged. Their love story is so sweet, a wonderful tale of respect.

Mrs Shana Galen has crafted a wonderful and sensual tale of acceptance, while giving time to her heroine to heal.

I loved the pairing of Phineas Duncombe, the ninth Duke of Mayne and Lady Annabel Longstowe; it’s a fabulous twist on the May-December romance! Annabel is 15 years older than Phin and her reputation as The Wanton Widow is the talk of the town. Loved the scene when Phin asks Annabel about the nature of her relationship with his late brother. This conversation between the characters sets the tone for the novel. A jealous Phin tries to determine if his brother and Annabel were lovers. Loved that Annabel remained cool, calm and collected and then challenged Phin as to the real reason for their meeting!
Annabel has a secret and she needs a powerful ally to help her. She knows that Phin is sexually attracted to her. Annabel uses this knowledge to her advantage when she asks him to help her locate her daughter. Loved that Phin struggled with his attraction towards Annabel when she started to disrobe-he was very, very distracted- but, agreed to help Annabel. I loved the sexual chemistry between Phin and Annabel and that he truly wanted to help her.
Annabel and Phin begin their adventure by travelling to Ceald House. Annabel believes that her late husband’s papers may hold clues to her daughter’s whereabouts. Loved that the author employed a double romance-Annabel and Phin and Meg and Reynolds. This choice added so much to my enjoyment of the novel! Loved that Phin cared for Annabel and that she began to trust him during their adventure while their servants were falling in love below stairs!
A Duke A Dozen is a fabulous story – the characters are relatable and their journey is poignant. The author weaves in lots of social commentary and a bit of intrigue. Shana Galen has a gift for writing smart, witty conversations infused with humor for her characters; the conversations between Phin and Annabel are marvelous. The conclusion to the novel is superbly written and I loved the ending which surprised me!

A not so expendable Survivor

Phineas Duncombe was supposed to be expendable, the fifth son, but now as the Duke of Mayne, he wasn't. Still, he wanted to speak with one of the last people to see his brother Richard alive: the Wanton Widow, Lady Annabel Longstowe. He thought her ravishing, and if he were honest, he hoped to seduce the Wanton Widow. Phin did not accomplish anything he set out to do. However, when she asked for his help in finding her daughter, she left him utterly flummoxed. And probably no more than I was, because my first impression of Annabel was not a good one. Although the reasons for her behaviour became clearer later on, her nickname seemed a little too fitting for a little while at the beginning, and I couldn't fathom why she couldn't wait and see how he would react first. Phin is almost delirious with lust, but thankfully an honourable man. She is far from immune to his considerable charms, but she will not succumb. She deems him too young, and there is are fifteen years between them.

As much as I enjoy a younger man-older woman romance, I too perceived that chasm. He seemed in some ways rather immature in spite of being thirty-two, and she did act older. "Perfect Phineas" was precisely just that; he's awfully sweet, but she is one frustrating woman. To be honest, I thought Annabel's housekeeper Mrs. Slightley and Reynolds, Phin's valet, just about stole the show; what fabulous characters! Not a scene with them was superfluous. I also very much appreciated how Ms. Galen chose to show us the plight of those with mental and physical challenges in eras gone by, and Theadosia - Annabel's daughter - was another highlight of A DUKE A DOZEN. It's a very moving part of the story.

I will again differ from the norm, I suppose, but I would have wished fewer lustful musings and sex scenes and more on the subject of the Doomed Duke. However the few action sequences were fabulous, and I loved the teasers for what will be next for The Survivors, namely The Bachelors of Bond Street, with Thomas Gaines, a minor character in a previous book whom I loved to bits.

3.5 rounded up

After losing his four older brothers in rapid succession, Phineas Duncombe is now the Duke of Mayne. Unhappy with this turn of events, Phin wants answers and decides to interrogate one of the last people who spoke to his brother before he died, the widowed Countess of Longstowe, aka the Wanton Widow.

Annabel, Countess of Longstowe, is far from wanton and has no desire to take Phin as a lover, he is much too young for her and she doesn’t want a lover, what Annabel does want is her daughter and asks Phin for help.

Phin quickly falls for Annabel, but she is not willing to share her heart with him. He helps her find her daughter and while doing so, it becomes clear that someone is trying to kill him.

The book is well written and Annabel’s story is both heartbreaking and touching, but there are just things that don’t work in this book for me. First and foremost is the villain’s motivation, his reasons are not legitimate or feasible, as that is not how the inheritance would work, unless he planned on killing at least one more person. Second the age difference between Phin and Annabel, 15 years was too much for me, especially when her daughter is closer to Phin’s age than Annabel is – I don’t mind older women/younger men, but that was a touch too creepy for me and I would have felt the same with an older man/younger woman. Overall, it was a sweet love story and if the villain’s motivation had been different and the age gap between Phin and Annabel hadn’t been so wide, I would have loved the story.

Absolutely loved it! In fact, I think this is one of Shana Galen's best works - and since she's one of the best regency writers around at the moment that makes it one of the best regency reads I've had for a while! The characters have very real problems, emotional and physical, and the way the author faces them, with both realism and compassion is beautifully handled. I read it in 1.5 sittings, cover to cover - and it was only 1.5 because I had to sleep in the middle! Looking forward very much to both the next story in the series, and the novella from which a sample chapter was included ...

I love this series so much and it has been amazing. I love all the characters and the plots. This book is about the doomed Duke Phineas Duncombe who is now the ninth Duke of Mayne. He never wanted the dukedom and never dreamed of getting it since he had four older brothers. Annabel is called the Wanton Widow because she was barely eighteen when she was married to the elderly Earl of Longstowe. This was a good book.

As with all of Shana Galen’s historical romances, she has again delivered a tale with sparkling dialogue and an adventure-packed plot. I’m so glad I accepted an invitation from the author, to read and review A Duke a Dozen, book six in the Survivors series. My opinions are my own and are not influence in any way.

Phineas, the Duke of Manne, is thrust into a role he’d never expected, nor wanted. Losing the four brothers who stood between him and the dukedom is beyond his comprehension, leaving him reeling. While dealing with this massive undertaking, the last thing he needs or wants is a widow beseeching him to use his influence to help her find her missing twenty-year-old daughter.

That sets up the need for Phin and Annabel’s daily contact, which creates a perfect storm of emotions and sexual tension. Each knows nothing can come of their attraction for each other. There are just too many obstacles for anything permanent. Nonetheless, their passion cannot be denied. Can they put aside all those reasons, or must duty end their liaison, breaking both of their hearts?

A Duke a Dozen is another fine example of Shana Galen’s talent as an author. Her characters are vibrant and fully fleshed out. The story flows smoothly, and the plot is beyond unique. Most heroes are older than the heroines in Regency romances. Ms. Galen has the heroine many years older! That alone had me eagerly flipping the pages on my Kindle, dying to see how she would pull this off.

At first, I had my doubts that Annabel, fifteen years older than the hero, could ever appeal to me, but I must admit––she’s such an intriguing character, I suspended my skepticism. Her back story is heartbreaking. Not only did she have an abusive marriage with the late earl, the man stole her daughter away when the child was only a toddler. That alone made me want her to finding happiness.

Phin’s character makes an interesting hero. Although he’s dealing with such upheaval in his life, he cannot resist helping Annabel find her daughter. Not only is he a war hero, he has a tender heart as well. That had me immediately falling in love with Phin. His patience and care of Annabel touched me deeply.

Although Phin and Annabel should not fit, they do in a most spectacular way. Annabel believes she’s frigid, and Phin proves she’s not, and he does it in a most deliciously entertaining way. The chemistry between them is amazing, and I truly wanted them to find a way to be together and beat the odds!

If you’re a fan of Regency romances with plenty of emotion and compelling characters, then you will love A Duke a Dozen as much as I. I highly recommend this book and this very talented author. This book is a fantastic addition to her Survivor’s series. Happy reading!

I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of Shana Galen’s sixth Survivors book, A Duke a Dozen and the views expressed are my honest opinions. The Doomed Duke, Phineas Duncombe, ninth Duke of Mayne meets the Wanton Widow, Annabel Countess of Longstowe due to the peculiar circumstances his four elder brothers passed away.
After a rocky start, Phin realizes that the beautiful Countess is far more different than the ton believes. Despite the age gap, it does not take long for Phin to fall for her. When Annabel approaches Phin requesting his help to locate her daughter, she expects him his help at a price. But kind-hearted Phin who didn’t want or expect the dukedom surprises her by offering his help and friendship with no strings attached. Their journey to the country sheds light on the Countess’ marriage and the cruel, sadistic ways an elderly Earl had ensured his young Countess would remain faithful to him. During the journey, it also becomes apparent that the Dukes of Mayne might have been targeted by an enemy. Will Phin convince Annabel that it’s never too late for love or will he realize that he needs to do his duty to secure the line?
I commend Ms. Galen for her creativity in providing diversity in her books. Initially, I thought that an older heroine would not work. But the reader gets entranced with the plot and getting to know Annabel as the story progresses, one cannot help but feel for her past marriage years. Ms. Galen also includes an assortment of secondary characters, two of which having special needs. I love that Ms. Galen has included the perspective of one of them in the book, giving her a fierce spirit. Unfortunately, as with the Countess’ daughter, people with disabilities would have been locked away at the time. Ms. Galen has included a cute furry animal, this time a rabbit named Twitchy which needed saving from the pot. Towards the end of the book, we also get to meet Colin FitzRoy, another Survivor.

Phineas Leopold Duncombe, the 9th Duke of Mayne, and his friend Stratford Fortescue wonder about the four strange early deaths of Phin’s older brothers. One of the brothers died after visiting the “Wanton Widow” (Lady Anabel Longstowe) and Phin decides to ask her some questions. He also finds her very attractive, even if she is older than he. Annabel knows nothing about his brothers’ deaths, but she would like his help finding her child. Her husband had sent the child to a hospital that takes cares of special needs patients and she’d like to find her daughter.

He decides to help her find her daughter and they set off to Ceald House, where the current Earl and his mother live. Anabel has horrible memories of the house but needs to find her daughter. She is also worried about Phin’s numerous attacks and injuries. They can’t be random, and he is determined to find the cause. After they find the culprit Phin convinces her to marry him and poor Colin Fitzroy is given the task of telling Phin’s mother of his marriage.

I can’t wait for Colin’s story. I so enjoyed this book and can highly recommend it. Thanks for another great one Shana Galen.

I like this series. The survivors of a doomed troop from the war. This time we did not have time to hang out or meet the rest of the gang. This was Finn's book. Oh and his older lady, wink wink.

Finn comes to Annabell thinking she had slept with his brother, cos she is the Wanton Widow after all. Of course that is just the Ton gossiping cos a widow liked to have fun once! Anyway, his brother is dead and he has questions. Which leads to him helping her out. Roadtrip!

She is almost 15 years older. She has issues with men after her horrible marriage.

He is a young Duke who needs an heir, and a spare.

They become friendly, they want to become more, there can never be a happy ending, or?

I was all for a widow of 45 finding love again. You go girl! And getting a young Duke on top of that.

I enjoyed it. There was also a little romantic sidestory too about someone close to them, no spoilers.

I have listened to Ashton many times and she is always good. She does historical romance well. Voices, tone, everything. She takes you back.

An intriguing addition to this series with the hero, Phineas (love that name), the new Duke of Mayne one of the soldiers who survived the war. Unfortunately as the title he now held was going, he may not live long enough to do anything. After all, his four brothers had all met their demise and he was left. He had to find out what happened to his last brother and retrace his steps.
Was that what he really wanted when he went to visit the "Wanton Widow", Annabel, Countess of Longstowe? He had seen her and his brother together and thought she might have been one of the last people to talk to him. But is that really why he wanted to visit her? Oh yes his knees almost buckled when she came into the room.
Annabel hardley remembers how she earned that moniker, but after being married to a cruel man for years, she is not about to give her heart to any man. She just wants to find her daughter and she asks him for his help.
Such a truly wonderful story of second chances at happiness no matter their age differences and a journey to find answers and true love.

The most emotional Survivor yet!

Phin has survived the war as part of Draven’s Dozen as well as the deaths of his four older brothers...but he’s not likely to survive without his Wanton Widow. Annabel wants only to heal from her past wounds but can’t decide if Phin’s attentions will accomplish that feat or create new wounds.

For Phin it’s instant love and instant foot in mouth syndrome but he knows Annabel is it for him, so when she asks for his help he doesn’t hesitate. Watching Phin go above and beyond to support Annabel in every way was so poignant. Annabel’s strength and love was also a wonderful element of the story as was the secondary love story! And it wouldn’t be a Shana Galen book if there wasn’t at least a smidge of danger and intrigue!

I loved that A Duke a Dozen introduced us to new Survivors of Draven’s Dozen and hinted at some fun stories to come!

I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.

Reading a Shana Galen book is a special treat. This is one of my favorite series that tells the story of a special group of war heroes and how they find love. Phineas is a smooth talker. He has just taken up the mantle of Duke, something he never wanted. Annabel is a widow with a tarnished reputation who is desperate to find her daughter. They are attracted to each other but believe it is unworkable. When Annabel recruits Phineas to help her they embark on a journey of discovery. They discover that love knows no bounds and can overcome any obstacles. You will enjoy the witty conversations and their steamy escapes as they slide home to a happily ever after.

It was great to return to the Survivors series and read about Phin's story. The story was very real and dealt with a lot of subjects that could be awkward but the story was told perfectly. It was interesting to read about an older heroine especially since I am around that age myself. I also loved the romantic side story and the underlying mystery of Phin's curse. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series!

4 Stars! This was a good read! It’s an older woman, younger man, standalone book. I loved that the main characters had servants that had a little point of view love story of their own- Reynolds and Meg/Mrs. Slightly. They were a cute couple. I loved how it was an older woman love story instead of the usual! I’ve read 2 of the other books in this series & I enjoyed them as well!

Trigger warnings: sexual violence (in the past), forced marriage (in the past), gun violence, death of a sibling (in the past), institutionalisation of a child (in the past), slut shaming, shitty treatment of people with disabilities (in the past), fire.

3.5 stars.

I...have mixed feelings about this. Like, on the one hand, the romance between Phin and Annabel was fine, I guess? I liked how much he made sure she was okay at every stage of things after realising the trauma she's been through in the past. But the whole "I need you to help me find my daughter" plot was a little tenuous and the "is someone trying to kill you?" plotline was somewhat random and thrown in at the end.

And yet the romance between the servants? OMG YES, GIVE ME AN ENTIRE BOOK OF THAT PLEASE AND THANK YOU, IT WAS WONDERFUL.

All in all, I feel like this needed more of a presence from the other Survivors than it had. But, like, it was decent enough and kept me occupied for a couple of hours on a rainy cold afternoon.

Chapeau! I take my hat of to the author, as she addresses the substantial age difference between an older heroine (47) and a hero, who is, at 32, 15 years younger than the heroine. (There is also a second romance between an older woman and a younger man.) Well done!

The story itself was (very) funny by the way 😀 but the end was a bit sudden though.

This is a cute story about a man who doesn't want to be a duke and is because his brothers keep dying. Is it just fate or more sinister circumstances? He meets the "Wanton Widow" and she needs his help. She's also several years older than him and he is smitten. The sex scenes were great.

I loved it. My only complaint is that Phin and Annabel's story is it's interspersed with the love story of the maid and valet. But I still loved it.

2.5 stars. Idk how you make a murder mystery meets cougar romance boring, but Galen managed. I think the romantic leads didn't work for my as a couple, and individually I was not very invested in their storyline.

The B plot with their servants falling in love was much more interesting.

This book intrigued me because I always appreciate a romance that features an older heroine. Why should only younger women have all the fun! I was surprised, though, that the hero was younger and not by just a small amount. They had a 15-year age difference between them. So I was interested to see how this book would go.

The first part of the book seemed a little bit too insta lust to me. Right in the first chapter, the duke is already mentally expressing his "admiration” of her and her assets from when he'd seen her at a ball the night before his older brother's death. I'm not usually a fan of those kinds of stories. Also, I didn't like how at times it felt like the characters weren't really true Regency, or at least not the way we think of Regency romance. They were both more forward than I would have thought them to be, especially on early acquaintance. At times, they seemed more modern in their sensibilities.

But I'm glad that I stuck with it. I found the banter between the duke and the countess to be most amusing, starting when she came over to ask for a big favor and they then played billiards. That scene was a lot of fun, and that delightfulness carried on to different parts of the book, though not all. The book did have a serious subplot about Anabel’s missing daughter. The duke is actually a swoon-worthy hero, despite the insta lust, because once he realized what was really going on, he tried very hard to be the proper gentleman, and always acted in her best interest even if she didn't want him to. The Wanton Widow has more than a few secrets, and I really enjoyed how the duke helped her put the ghosts of the past at rest. All in all, I found this to be a very different, but rather enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
