An Animal Lark Novel

What to expect when your pet rat is expecting, or how to fall in love at a pet show.

Jamie Hewett rescues and breeds prize-winning fancy rats. While he’s surrounded by supportive, animal-loving friends, his ex-boyfriend has never been one of them. One embarrassing breakup later, he definitely isn’t looking for love again, but perhaps a rebound relationship might ease his broken heart.

Liam Donnelly’s quirky dating life is the subject of a popular vlog, and his viewers have interesting ideas on where he might find romance. When they suggest he take Mabel, his new rat, to a pet show, he’s up for the adventure.

Although they can’t deny their growing interest in each other, neither Jamie nor Liam believes in love at first sight. They’ve both had bad luck with men, and Jamie isn’t pleased that Liam makes a living as a serial dater. On top of that, others are conspiring to keep them apart, and Jamie is left holding the baby—or twenty-plus babies—when their fur children have no trouble making a connection. Will a YouTube ukulele serenade convince Liam that Jamie’s love for him—and their unborn rat children—is for real?

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads

This story about the romance that sparks between two rat lovers. When we meet them, Jamie has just had his heart broken and Liam is all about Youtube fame. They are brought together by their shared interest in rats.

It’s difficult for me to get into a romance when I don’t particularly like either of the main characters. Jamie is a little bit boring and he’s constantly whingeing. Liam reminds me of all the bro-tubers my teenagers love and I wear headphones to avoid. He’s a bit of a lad with a slightly unusual Youtube channel. Neither Jamie or Liam really caught my attention and I didn’t feel very invested in their story.

The story itself starts slow before building into an unnecessarily angsty relationship between Jamie and Liam. The rats are the most interesting part of the story but I’m not sure I really believed in the big rat drama at the end.

I recognise that I’m probably older than the target audience for this book. I’m sure there will be readers who engage with these characters and their stories more than I did but it didn’t work very well for me.

“Contrary to what many people believe, pet rats are not the dirty, disease-infested creatures of folklore. Domestic rats are affectionate, clean, sensitive and easy to train.” ~ Dr. Karen Becker

Besides being a taxi driver, Liam Donnely, of ‘Mischief Maker’ by Andi Lee, films and produces a vlog that is very popular. Liam has many followers, who anticipate viewing videos featuring his love life. Every week Liam regales his followers with videos of men he dates, filming his “adventures” as they go along, with varied results.

The love of Liam’s life is a white, female fancy rat named Mabel. Mabel offers him affection, companionship, and unconditional love, unlike most of the men who have been in his life. She is his best friend. When he expresses concern about her being lonely, his followers suggest going to the National Fancy Rat Show, where, as a rat lover, he is sure to meet the man of his dreams. “Armed” with Mabel on his shoulder, he walks around for a while until someone mentions that Mabel needs company and that the best breeder to talk to is a guy named Jamie. While looking for Jamie, Liam runs into two men having a heated argument; apparently, one is breaking up with the other. Feeling sorry for the man who is being broken up with, Liam offers him comfort; he convinces the distraught man to come with him so he can collect himself. Liam soon discovers that the man he rescued is Jamie, the man he is looking for.

Jamie is grateful to Liam for comforting him, but a bit alarmed that he left, so quickly, with a perfect stranger. When Liam explains that he wants a companion for Mabel, Jamie relaxes a little. However, he explains that he doesn’t have any rats available at the moment. He’s a responsible breeder, whose litters are planned. He has homes for his babies before they are born and, actually, he has a waiting list for future litters. Liam is disappointed, but wants to keep in touch, hoping he can get some babies later.

Liam really likes Jamie. He’s not looking for a relationship, but he needs a plus one for his sister’s wedding and decides that Jamie would make a great pretend boyfriend. They keep running into each other and, although he fought getting to know Liam, Jamie decides he would be great for a little rebound fun. Neither man is in a position to be serious about someone, but the thing this is, the more they are around each other, the more they want to be. Liam’s interest in and love for rats, is something that endears him to Jamie and bonds the two of them. When Jamie gets a rescue rat and babies to keep for a shelter, Liam is fascinated and wants to adopt two of them when they are old enough. Things are going well for them until Jamie finds his prize male rat in with Liam’s regular rats. Jamie is convinced that Liam must have made a mistake and put him in the wrong cage. They have a huge fight and Liam leaves, taking his girls with him.

I loved this book! It has so many elements in the story that check all of my boxes: pet rats, deaf culture, and bats. I’ve adopted rats for over thirty years. They are my favorite pets. Many of the scenarios in the book are very familiar to me. Andi has done an excellent job of presenting these precious little creatures as the wonderful little beings they are. Thanks, Andi, for writing the most delightful book I’ve read in a long time.

Mischief Maker is a fun, super cute story of young love and heartache, betrayal, and finding that perfect guy just for you. Jamie is intelligent and sexy while Liam is outgoing and quirky and just might be the best rebound Jamie could have picked. Add in their love of all things rat, close friends and jealous boyfriends, and you have one delightful read. Can't wait to see what happens next.

3.5 stars.

Jamie and Liam. Ah, young love, complete with bumps in the road, meddling exes, well-meaning family and friends, and yes, pet rats (which I now possess a modicum of knowledge about).
Cute and sweet with minimal angst, this was a solid story with memorable moments that left me smiling, an enjoyable read, and a great debut for this author.

Mischief Maker is the first book in the ‘Animal Lark’ series. It stars Jamie Hewett, a breeder and rescuer of fancy rats, and Liam Donnelly, a vlogger who vlogs about his dates. This is told in third person from both Jamie and Liam’s pov.

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest and unbiased review.

ARC was provided for an honest review.

This reads like your favorite rom-com movie. And the thing I love most about rom-coms is just the hint of realism in this wonderful OTT world were everyone has a meet cute and the angst doesn't matter.

This read follows Jamie and Liam in their mischief (they have a bunch of pet rats! Adorable!) overran story. Liam is a vlogger who vlogs his outrageous dating life and Jamie is a well-respected rat breeder. The boy's meet cute is more a meet angry and it perfectly sets the tone for their relationship.

Liam was a bit irritating for me at the beginning since he's goal is to get a plus one to his cousin's wedding. As someone who planned three different weddings because of INSANE families I really disliked Liam's attitude towards his cousin's decision. But, stick with him, he's not as dingy and self-centered as he acts!

Jamie was also dull for me at the beginning, he just got broken up with in a very public manner and his ex decides to be with his bestie. Jamie is an angry little potato and a bit mopey. It's also hinted at that he wasn't the best boyfriend and I'm bummed it didn't go more into that!

The best thing is both characters are made better by one another, Liam realizes he wants more than the party boi lifestyle and really changes everything about himself including his vlog, which I'm not going to spoil because it's amazing. And Jamie kinda loosen ups a bit because of Liam's cheerfulness.

The pre-angst happens near the middle of the book and fizzles out very quickly. I was actually hoping that the reveal of Liam vlogging content would have had MORE of an impact but again rom-com feels, it was ok. The final angst happens near the end and it's a bit of a miscommunication that is resolved relatively quickly and quirky-ly.

Over all Mischief Maker is a fun read that will make you want a pet rat and leave you with a smile on your face. It has some moments which feel a bit flat but overall the romance is cute and sweet and the ending is satisfying.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Liam doesn’t do relationships, one and done, that seems to be his MO and then also putting those disasters on YouTube. He wants his plus one for a wedding and that means a real relationship, trying a fake one seems best to him and to help Jamie get over his ex but it quickly becomes much more. Jamie is such a sweetheart and can be just a bit blind to what is actually going on around him.

Once Jamie accepts Liam’s proposal and they art to hang out for the most part everything between them goes smoothly. I had more trouble with Jamie’s ex than I probably should have but seriously they had apparently all been friends for years you don’t go and cheat with another person in the friend group and then pout and throw tantrums when people are upset with you and you don’t get your way, it just proves that you were never good friends to begin with. And the pettiness of trying to get back at Jamie because you seem to have lost your friends was just childish.

Though both of these two seems to have a problem with not getting their way they were likeable guys. I think Liam has spent so much time only letting people see what he wants them to see it’s hard to actually open up and let people in but he lets Jamie in far more than he ever planned at the beginning. I got a bit ticked at Jamie for only being concerned about himself when Liam’s rats got pregnant but he seems to have mostly redeemed himself in the end. I want to see who the next couple could be as there are a few choices just going by the friends in the book.

I really like the cover art by Reece Notley and the cute visual of Liam with Mable.

ARC received for an honest review.

Jamie is a rat breeder who just got dumped by his boyfriend; who happens to be having an affair with Jamie's best friend Tommy.

Liam is the playboy who puts it all on YouTube. He's upset that he didn't get a plus one on his invite to a cousins wedding; so he's going to meet someone acceptable that will get him a plus one invite.

Jamie and Liam crash into each other and only one of them seems happy about it. They end up running into each other again at a prize rat showing. Jamie and Liam decide to start dating each other to get something they each want; only a fake relationship soon turns into the real thing. Just when you think everything is sailing toward a HEA, Jamie's ex causes trouble for the couple.

The first 50% of the book is slow and boring IMO. Once the couple turn their fake relationship into a real relationship it gets more interesting but there's still no fireworks. Jamie and Liam seemed more like best friends with benefits, than two lovers learning to navigate a new relationship. The rat aspect of the book was something new that I've never read before but it wasn't exactly entertaining. This was my first Andi Lee book so I'm not sure this is her usual style of writing but it didn't keep me entertained. It was a real struggle to get through the first 50%. There are some grammar and punctuation errors that hopefully will be caught in another editing before it's released. Not familiar with the UK but in America if one says "we can order a Chinese", it would refer to a person, not the food. That sentence definitely needs fixed. Sorry but this book was a miss for me.

Mischief maker was my first book by this author, so I wasn't sure what to expect . What first got my attention was the cover- beautiful guy with a pet rat on his shoulder , and the second was the blurb. You see, I am a pet rat owner myself and used to be a youtuber, so I was really excited to read this book .

The book started of really well , was interesting and engaging , but around 30% it felt a bit off. I didn't feel the chemistry between main characters , their feeling development was kind of skipped and their sudden relationship felt a bit cold , however that changed in the further chapters . Their love, their fight and apologies were very real and heartfelt. It even managed to make me cry a little ..

I wish there was "meet the parents " moment for Jamie , since Liam was concerned about it so much , but besides mentioning how well they got along there was no further details. I loved Liam and how protective and loving he was with his family.

Author did really good job on research and like I said, I love that it was about pet rats, because you don't read often enough about them as pets.

All in all it was a very good read and I do recommend this book and the author . Will definitely check out more of their books in the future

Mischief Maker is a sweet, feel-good story of two wounded hearts who find more than they bargained for. Jamie has been dumped by a selfish ex who cheated on him with Jamie’s best friend, Tommy. Liam is a Youtuber who vlogs his serial dating for fun and viewership. They decide to come together out of convenience. Jamie wants a rebound relationship and Liam wants to prove something to his friends who don’t take him seriously. Together Jamie and Liam develop a friendship that turns into so much more. In each other they find something neither expected.
I really enjoyed this story. Jamie and Liam’s development from hesitant friendship to serious relationship doesn’t happen overnight. It happens as they discover common interests and mutual respect. Slowly they help each other recover from past relationships that wounded their hearts as they fall hard for each other. The interplay and banter among Jamie and his friend Dane is also great and I’m hoping to see Dane get his story told too.

Mischief and Maternity!

Andi Lee’s first in the Animal Lark series is a fun, quirky, quick read. The characters of Liam and Jamie are well developed and, while the story is a bit slow in the middle, you care about them and want to see the two of them make it work. Each has some growing up to do and the added “expectations” of impending rat parenthood make them realize they are better together than apart. I’m not a fan of rats but the way Andi Lee describes them makes me wonder if they get a bad rap! I enjoyed this book and wanted to see the characters overcome their obstacles and get their act together - at least for the sake of the babies! If this is the first in a series (and I hope the next one is about Dane and Ben -hint, hint) then I’ll be picking those up as well. It was a nice end of Summer, sitting on the deck read.

This was sweet and fun and hot and educational all rolled into one. The characters were sweet and fun, I usually prefer one of the two main characters (mostly two in romances) but in this case I loved Jamie and Liam equally. I loved how they just fit together, it felt very natural. The sex was hot. Now as for the educational bit, I've owned several hamsters and a mouse but never a rat. This book was a bit of an eye-opener about rats as pets. For one thing, as a non-native speaker, I didn't know that they're called buck and doe. I've only ever associated those words with deer. Also didn't know that a group of rats is called a mischief and I love that.
I really enjoyed this and I'm guessing Dane might be featured in Animal Lark 2??

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of rodents of any kind. So a romance that has at its core, a pair of guys that are connected by their love of their pet rats, would seem a strange choice. It is very telling of the writing skills of Andi Lee that I was completely engrossed in this story!!! The main characters Liam and James are so endearing in their own ways. This pretend boyfriend premise was done so well, and with such a great cast of supporting characters, that I was even invested in the well being of the rats. Never saw that happening when I picked up this book. Watching Liam fall despite himself, at the same time that James is coming back to himself after a bad break-up was so much fun. I really hope this is the first of many books by Andi Lee.

I believe that this is Andi's first book and she has made a great start to her writing career with this very enjoyable story. It's a well constructed tale which includes a lot of rats and two men finding their way to each other. What starts with serial dater Liam's attempts to be allowed a plus one at his cousin's wedding develops into him finding out that he is able to have a deeper relationship than his usual one night stands allow but there are bumps on the way. If you've never thought of having a rat as a pet this story will encourage you to try out having your own mischief of rats. You will fall in love with the rats and Liam and Jamie. I was given this book in return for a free and unbiased review.

This was a fun read. The two MCs, Jamie and Liam, met and were immediately on a collision course to love - - with a few speed bumps along the way. Liam had a history of bad/disastrous dates (which he then vlogs about) and Jamie ( who works at a nature preserve) breeds and exhibits fancy rats as a hobby. The two met when Liam decides to take Mabel, his new rat, to a pet show.

There are rats (lots of rats), a bad ex-boyfriend, quirky friends, and ukuleles. This is a new author to me and I look forward to reading more of her work.

First read for me by Andi Lee.
I really liked it. Rats have never been my favourite pet, but I have to admit I wanted one of these so much!
We have Liam and Jamie and their ratty family, and quite a large cast of family, friends, acquaintances and ex lover/ friends to enemies. I really like that this is Uk based talking about places I’ve heard of if never visited. The story progresses nicely to the big finish the apology and a very nice epilogue.

This book was so adorable! I loved both Liam and Jamie! They fit together so well. The rats were cute. There’s some drama but I wouldn’t call it angst. There are pop culture references that tickled my fancy and added fun in. I really got a sense of place with all the locations. It definitely captured and held my attention.

OMG - that was sooo cute. I really loved it, just enough angst without being overwhelming but not so much sweet I got cavities. The characters of Liam and Jamie grew as people - Liam becoming more adult without losing his exuberance and Jamie coming into his own gaining confidence and self respect. Really a wonderful book. I can’t wait to read more by this lovely author.

Adorable - the MC's, the rats, the story (along with some very steamy sex). A great weekend read. Hope the next in the series is not about Tommy though - bad, bad, bad ex-best friend!
