“We are you—the you that you could have been.”

The Anaden Directorate has ruled Amaranthe for millennia, subjugating species and galaxies in a neverending quest for control and order. For as many millennia, the anarchs have rebelled, defiantly claiming their own freedom yet without hope of winning it for everyone. Now, an alliance with humans offers a tantalizing chance to at last defeat their immortal masters. But can they trust an ally who looks suspiciously like the enemy?

Humanity is the genetic recreation of the Anadens, but genetics aren’t everything. Humans like to make their own destiny, and they have overcome great challenges to achieve unprecedented peace and prosperity. But have their trials prepared them for the enemy they now face?

“The battle for the heart and soul of Amaranthe will be joined, and we must be unafraid.”

Amidst the chaos of an escalating war, Caleb’s bond with the mysterious diati grows ever more powerful, even as Alex’s forays into the hidden dimensions of the universe lead them to unfathomable places. But when the anarchs are pushed to the breaking point and the AEGIS fleet is dealt a devastating blow, Miriam Solovy must find a way to defeat a foe wielding superior technology, firepower and numbers, or else more than one civilization will be lost.

*

Our universe is but a snowglobe—an experiment born of desperation and hope. The true universe is unfathomably vast, teeming with life and untold wonders. And it is enslaved.

Created by ancient aliens in a daring gambit to understand the nature of the enemy, humanity is now asked to be the savior of a universe not their own. If they are to succeed, they must rise above not only their fractious past but the sins of their genetic ancestors to boldly embrace a future they never dared imagine possible.

G. S. Jennsen is a speculative and science fiction author, as well as a futurist, geek, gamer, programmer and editor. She has become an internationally bestselling author since her first novel, Starshine, was published in March 2014. She has chosen to continue writing under an independent publishing model to ensure the integrity of her series and her ability to execute on the vision she’s had for it since its genesis.

While she has been a lawyer, a software engineer and an editor, she’s found the life of a full-time author preferable by several orders of magnitude.

When she isn’t writing, she’s gaming or working out or getting lost in the mountains that loom large outside the windows in her home. Or she’s dealing with a flooded basement, or standing in a line at Walmart reading the tabloid headlines and wondering who all of those people are. Or sitting on her back porch with a glass of wine, looking up at the stars, trying to figure out what could be up there.

I've gotten to where I start out all of these reviews by saying something along the lines of how this story can't possibly get any bigger, but then the next book comes out and G.S. Jennsen blows my mind once more.

Well, it happened again. Big surprise there.

As an author myself, I can't help but marvel at the sheer amount of planning that must have gone (and is still going!) into this series. And I'm not just talking about the character development, because I imagine managing this cast of characters and having an arc on some scale for each of them is a challenge in itself. But here we are in book 8, where events are being affected by things that happened way back in Starshine and Vertigo . Some things have been slow-cooking more than others and have maybe been developing over the course of two or three books, but you look back on it all and can't help but think "Everything has been leading up to this."

There's a lot of science in this book, and honestly most of it goes way over my head -- my brain tends to skip the discussion and just jump to the conclusion. It seems like the characters are constantly discovering new ways to enhance their abilities, and one of the discoveries they make in this story should have some interesting implications in their future struggles against the Anaden Directorate and its fleets. Yet another discovery / experiment / secret is sure to have a huge impact as well, though on a much more personal level -- this is one of those plot points that's been slow-brewing over the course of a few books and has now been...given life thanks to a combination of story elements. I never saw it coming, but looking back on it now, things have obviously been flowing this direction for quite a while.

As always, the character relationships continue to develop and fluctuate, bringing unexpected characters together to accomplish a task, or, in some cases, pitting them against each other. But what stood out to me in this book wasn't Alex and Caleb, or Kennedy or Miriam or Morgan or any of the other characters we've known for the majority of the series. They all play huge roles of course (or, if not huge, at least meaningful) but what kept my attention were the newer Amaranthean characters. Relativity obviously introduced us to Eren asi-Idoni, and while we did meet others, he sort of remained in the spotlight (which is just fine with me, because I love him). In Rubicon, some of those other characters -- anarchs and Directorate alike -- got a lot more screen time, so to speak, and I'm glad because after 6 - 7 books featuring mostly the same characters, this helps keep the story fresh. Cosime is entertaining. Nyx keeps me on the edge of my seat. Even Nisi got my attention this time around, perhaps more than any of the other minor characters thanks to an epic revelation toward the end of the book (which, again, will have some interesting implications in the third and final installment). Still, Eren shined the most out of anyone and found himself in the spotlight once more (literally, in one particular scene that might be my new favorite out of the entire series). He saw an incredible amount of growth in this story alone.

The story ended with three blows (mostly to the reader, partially to the characters depending on whose perspective you're looking at). Boom. Epic scene involving Eren acting on all of that personal growth. Boom. Interpersonal revelation #1. Boom. Interpersonal revelation #2. I can't wait to find out what sort of impact this all has on events in Requiem, the ninth and final (as far as we know, anyway) installment in this series.

I can't fangirl enough about this series. Rubicon brings together the usual ingredients in a sci-fi cake, little guy against overwhelming dictatorship, just-in-time technological discovery, new allies and abilities added daily, and blends them into a sweet treat. The heroes are flawed, the story is their journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Self-sacrifice and sorrow are balanced by triumph and love. There is loss and not every battle is won, but the lesson's learned through loss are remembered. The morals that shine through are that we are stronger together and it is against our nature to stand by and watch injustice. This series is about humanity and who we want to be.

G.S. Jennsen Exceeds Expectations As Always

With each installment of her wonderful series, "Aurora Rhapsody", Ms Jennsen pulls the reader through an ever expanding multi-universe of thrilling military action, self sacrifice, emotion and suspense. Her well-rounded and extremely bright characters will have you pulling for them as they continue to develope the new technology
required to fight back against an unforgiving enemy which has subjected a wide array of life forms to a demeaning servitude. Jennsen's heroes will have the reader wondering if they are up to facing each new challenge of defeating an alien race that literally does not die. "Aurora Resonant" is the eighth book of this enthralling saga. Not just another space opera, but a Space Rhapsody.

I have encountered many series that lose something, or unravel, or just peter out eventually. This is definitely NOT one of those! If anything, each book is stronger, more engaging, and better crafted than the last. This may very well be my favorite of the series because of the depth and realism of the character development. I was able to see, understand, and feel along with each character, even those whom we only meet for a few fleeting moments. A beautiful glimpse into amazing worlds, and crafted so that I do not so much marvel at how different these aliens are, but how very much they are just like us.

Another stunning addition to the GS Jennsen Hall of Fame.

It had all the hallmarks of Jennsen's other works, with unique cultures, exciting twists, and humans conquering against all odds. This book definitely left me drooling for the final installment, except I'm not happy about the series ending. So there's that.

Rubicon was an absolutely captivating read and I enjoyed every minute of it. While not quite as action-packed as some of it's predecessors, the character development and game-changing revelations of the story raised new questions and provided plenty of tension to keep things fresh and interesting. The enormous scale, depth, complexity, and nuance of stories like this make me marvel at the fact that a single human being was capable of just pulling all of this out of their imagination. It's mind-boggling. I've always been amazed by Jennsen's ability to weave various characters and subplots together so flawlessly, but it especially caught my attention here as small pieces of information and events from previous books were brought together here and further developed in ways that have significant implications for the future of these characters and the universes they inhabit.

As always, the relationships between characters were beautifully developed, and Alex and Caleb were as adorable together as ever. However, it was Mia and Malcolm who really tugged at my heartstrings this time. There's also a Big Emotional Moment™ for a couple of the other characters in the story that may have had me almost tearing up. And then there's Eren, who had already grown on me by the end of Relativity but is now easily one of my favorite characters in the series.

There was enough happening here to hold my interest, but Rubicon definitely felt like a build-up to the final book of the series. All of the new developments in the story and the characters' growing capabilities promise what is sure to be an appropriately epic conclusion, and I look forward to seeing it all play out.

I finished Rubicon and my first thought was – wow! Followed by a little disappointment that it was done. I wanted more.

My second thought was that this is book number eight in the Aurora Rhapsody series and yet it still kept me enthralled. At no time was I bored, wanting to skip pages, put the book down or feeling the need to go do something else. It’s a common problem with series that at some time the writer loses track (or interest) and it shows in tedious, filler sections. Not in these books.

G.S. knows how to arouse emotions. From shock to laughter, pride to pain, love to hate and everything in between. The characters in her books worm their way into your heart and stay there. Even those we meet for the first time quickly become very familiar. They are drawn so clearly it’s hard not to think of them as real people.

Rubicon – to take a decisive, irrevocable step – so the dictionary tells us. What it doesn’t mention are the consequences of that step, the outcomes of that decision. G.S. Jennsen shows us in a multitude of ways how even the smallest decision can have a devastating outcome. Yet she gives us humour and love, she gives us humanity at its finest while dealing with its flaws.

Rubicon is space opera, it’s romance, it’s action and war, it’s about galaxy spanning decisions. But mostly it’s about the people caught up in all those things, how they deal with it and how it affects them. More importantly though is that I, as the reader, want to see them survive. I want to wander through the worlds G.S. has created, walk side by side with Alex and Caleb as they show me the wondrous things they’ve seen. I want to visit these amazing places and meet these fantastic people and isn’t that what good story telling and excellent writing is all about.

Go read these books, I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Another great adventure with Alex & Caleb and friends. Jennesen's storytelling remains at the high level at which it began. This book is #8 in the triple trilogy series and as such, things are coming together and questions are being answered. By now, all the characters (and there are many) are well known and I am concerned for their welfare and interested to see where each one's future leads. I can't wait for the release of REQUIEM, which is due this winter, to see where this entire adventure goes.

I have followed G.S. Jennesen since her debut novel, Startide Rising. At that time, I remarked that she is destined to become a Science Fiction luminary. Her ability to create characters that are larger than life, while still remaining likable is one of her greatest talents. Her other, and equally great talent is her ability to create strange and exciting universes in which her characters' lives are interwoven. I love it when a new author succeeds in the daunting world of writing and publishing and all that that world entails. And I particularly love it when it is done with the style and spirit shown by G.S. Jennesen. I can't wait to see what follows the Aurora series.

Yowza! This series blows me away with it's grand scale. Seriously. There are enough intricate details and development on every level, this series should be made into a movie. The balance between hard science and character development is just right in my opinion....though I confess the technical stuff confounds me. But just as you start to think that certain characters are becoming a little too super, the author throws in something that really humanizes them again. In this book I particularly enjoyed some of the character development and the small bit of marine action. There's so much going on and the book ends with a bit of a surprise. Can't wait to read the next one.

7 Fantastic books have come before Rubicon, and Rubicon maintains Jennsen's high standard!

Characters are excellent, and there's behavioral continuity - we've seen these characters grow and evolve over the series, and they continue to do so. I can only imagine how G. S. keeps track of all the character arcs and interactions - imagining some room in her house with pictures, push pins, and lots of string!

I started reading this and didn't move until I finished. It's that good. I can't wait for the next one!

This penultimate installation of the Aurora Rhapsody saga focuses on relationships. Old ones, new ones, lost ones, found ones—and it leaves me thinking what a wild dance it is between the world as it changes and the individuals who sometimes change it.

If you aren’t familiar with the series, it’s sci-fi, action, philosophy, and romance all in one, and each book has a slightly different feel, all leading up to what I know will be an epic conclusion. Start with Starshine. You will enjoy!

Breathless

I am breathless from reading this new installment in the Aurora series. I won't give away anything, but I will say, this is the best book in the series. The last three chapters were a rollercoaster of answers to some mysteries and emotion.

There were a few things that I had a tiny problem with, like how the Prevos never make a major mistake in their plans and execution of those plans, but that pales in comparison to the novel as a whole. Book Nine can't be released soon enough. And once it is, I'll sit down and read all 9 books back-to-back.

What a great addition to the series! With several major revelations in this book, it's certainly not to be missed. Without giving any spoilers, our hero Caleb learns much more about his powers that are tied to an energy entity known as the diati, our heroine Alex explores wormhole technology and it's a doozy, there are relationship problems between Malcolm and Mia (one of my favorite couples) which Ms. Jennsen deftly handles, and a character returns that you would never guess. Another complex and richly detailed book. I enjoyed it immensely!

Building effectively toward the climax of the series. Relentless in all its best features: robust characters; innovative species; complex plot; and undercurrents of ethical tensions.

This has been one hell of an amazing ride through the universes! The author has a vivid imagination and is able to suck you into her world. I really don't want these characters or these worlds to end.

Super amazing installment that keeps you wanting more. gripping sci-fi space opera that you would be remiss to leave behind. Don't wait for the future Netflix series to fall in love with this ragtag group of humans and non-humans alike.

As always, I loved the newest addition to this series. Jennsen does a fantastic job managing a huge cast of characters. I think I enjoyed this even more than the previous books because virtually all of the characters were in the same universe, fighting the same fight and contributing to the main plot, as opposed to Alex and Caleb being separate from everyone as they were in the previous books. Because of this, every character was memorable and interesting. The ending was a different kind of cliffhanger than the last two books, but it was still incredible and made me cry. I can't wait to see what happens next and how this epic saga will end... but I don't want to leave these characters I've read about for the past two and a half years!

One of my complaints would be that the science this time around was too much -- the whole discussion about the Prevos' newest invention was confusing and hard to follow. I skipped over most of it. And will any of their inventions have negative consequences? We shall see...

There were also a lot of typos in the Kindle edition... enough that it was a bit distracting. I hope the final installment is more thoroughly edited.

First, let me say that if you are just discovering this wonderful writer, buy book 1 of this series (Starshine) immediately!! You will not be disappointed!! GS Jennsen has consistently engaged her readers with an exciting, thought-provoking, character driven, fun, sexy, storyline throughout this series. You will fall in love with her characters, both human, not so human, and totally not human! She will transport you far into unknown territory, physically and metaphorically. And she never fails to surprise! Rubicon, (book #8) has some humdinger plot twists and a couple of very surprising turn of events. And the ending is amazing!! Thank goodness Jennsen is a fast writer because I need to know what happens next!! However, book 9 will be the finale to this wonderful ride we've all been on, but, knowing GS, the ending will be profound, completely absorbing, and surprising! I urge all of you who haven't experienced this series to jump right in, it's an E ticket ride!!

This is a romance novel with a few plot lines form the series.
You could actually read the 3rd book and not be lost by skipping this on.
The point is that events in this book are only tangentially important to the 3 book series.

I have to admit that I’ve been uneasy for a while about the ever increasing level of fan-boy-ness I exhibit for this series. All the stuff that annoyed me about the first book is still there, but even more so. Two things have convinced me to give up caring and whole-heartedly accept my destiny of being the ultimate driveling fan-boy of this series, its universes, and of course, the goddess author herself:
1) There’s a scene in this book that convinced me that the author is not only aware of all this stuff, but she herself has whole-heartedly embraced that and is proceeding to continue to push it even further at an accelerated pace. Without spoilers, that scene is the one containing the lines something to the effect of “Uh oh, she’s got that look.”, “What look?”, The look where she...”.
2) My real concern with all the stuff that annoyed me was my fear of looking like an unsophisticated reader who falls for such “overtly amateurish and bad writing”. Well, let’s just say that the final scene in this book left me with the attitude of “Well, that’s bullocks, this is writing, and even if it isn’t and this exposes me as a the most indiscriminating, most easily manipulated, most naive reader in the history of the universe, I don’t give a flying rat’s ass because that stuff works for me and I hope she keeps working it!”

Love the audacity!

Excellent

Well... This was the second time I read this book... And I swear there was more to it than the first time. You see, the first time was because it was part of a group, which ultimately led to me wanting to continue with "Continum" which hasn't been published yet. Oh well, she captivates me so, I'm going to buy the next book, even though I've already read it,because I'll probably have the same experience I just had.... Meaning I'll probably discover words I read to fast the first time.

This was a good staging for the final battle. We learned a lot about who they are facing in this war and made some incredible leaps in technology.

Once more into this final breach.
