About the author

Anne Scott-James has known and loved village life since childhood, when she walked and cycled and searched for wildflowers in the woods of Berkshire and Hampshire. She was educated at St. Paul's Girls' School and Somerville College, Oxford, where she was a classical scholar, and then went into journalism, where she was at one time editor of Harper's Bazaar and later a columnist for the Daily Mail. She now specializes in garden writing. She was married to the late Osbert Lancaster and has both children and grandchildren.

An interesting look at the history of the "cottage garden" from Medieval timesto the present day. Scott-ames has done her research and she's also an entertaining companion.

An easy-read account of the history and development of the cottage garden from the earliest records to the latter half of the 20th century. It also benefits from a wide range of illustrations, from old gardening manuals through to photographs of more recent cottage gardens. This is an engaging and entertaining book that I recommend to anyone with an interest in garden history.
