This fourth book of the Terra Nova series wraps up the story of the Terra Nova colonists as they struggle to gain a foothold on a new world, in a new galaxy, with new neighbors . . .or does it? This series has a bit of everything, spaceships, aliens, robots, AI constructs, cyborgs, good guys (many of whom are women), bad guys, guys trapped in the middle, exotic planets, exotic creatures (sentient and not). There are enough battles in space, in atmosphere, and on the ground, to satisfy the most ardent shoot-em-up fight fan. The development of a vast array of characters including the above mentioned aliens, humans, robots, etc., is well done. There are plenty of internal struggles and external relationships to keep the interest of those who enjoy character driven stories, too.
This series is not a dive into deep philosophical conundrums, nor is it a psychological mind-bender. It is more of an enjoyable Star Wars-esque fight between good and evil with enjoyable characters. And, there are plenty of adventures left for the human colonists in thier new galaxy with their new friends. My favorite character was MAC/CID, the (possibly sentient) Infiltrator Robot/AI. But for now, I'm all wore out from all the fighting. Maybe something a bit more cerebral and noncombative, yet intriguing, for my next read.
Mass Effect: Andromeda, plus the villains from Superman II, the weapon from the Death Star, Tranyal from the original Star Trek series, Robocop, the air-to-air combat from Blue Thunder, and Wesley Crusher. And every solution comes at the last possible second. I don't have a problem with borrowing ideas from classic properties; it's the way that writing is done. But this does not use those tropes well.
That said, this might be the best book in the series. Most of the problems are left-overs from previous books, so their mental cost has already been paid. And the action sequences are written well.
Unfortunately, the character work is no better, and this one book can't overcome the baggage of the previous volumes.
This series is what you get when "Wouldn't it be cool if..." is prioritized over making any sort of sense.
Would this have been better if I had read the previous series? Maybe. But the series, itself, never caused me to buy into the characters, the situation, or the plot. If you're already committed to this world, you don't need my opinion. If you aren't, I'd recommend some other series.
The series up to book 4 really should have been a single novel. Given Kindle prices, buying this series might be worth it, but with hardback or paperback prices, forget it.
The publisher's description sums up the story reasonably well. The ending has been predictable from the beginning. I think the author was fully aware of that.
There is a big opening for yet another series, but the main storyline for this series ends here.
I doubt I will read this book again except as part of reading the entire series. Since this series is a spin-off of the larger Ember War series by the same author, I might have missed some context that would have made reading this series a lot more enjoyable. I might read that earlier series and then read this one again to see if that is true.
The entire series has been thrilling. A terrific syfy. Time well spent in my imagination. I have zero complaints of the writing…. My only issue is there are a few "recommended reading orders". Finding the correct one that denotes an exact timeline for each galaxy was frustrating. I’d begin a book, discover I should have opted for a different one constantly. So, I recommend that you give future readers a timeline, specific to galaxy events and overlapping events. Easy to get lost and miss a book completely.
This was fantastic. Far far better then the previous two books in the series. It's an action sci-fi series focusing on the action and this book delivered with the action. Great ending to an overall good series
I enjoyed this book even if there are some annoying things. Jarad can’t possibly think he is justified in waging war just because his family’s life is threatened. Hale didn’t let him but it was still annoying. Still enjoyable.
Ember Wars has been enjoyable. A good plot. Only a few technical glitches, good characters, and lots of action. Recommend you start at the beginning. Enjoy.
A good wrap up for the Kyrios story arc. I look forward to Carson’s next adventure. Some minor errors and inconsistencies scattered throughout the book. People’s locations and titles changing in the middle of a scene. I.e. Private Eaton becomes Corporal Eaton in the next paragraph, then back to Private in the next sentence, then Corporal for the remainder of the book. Overlooking the errors, the story is great!
Thesis is a great ending to this series. It is action packed and the characters are consistent with the past stories. The final reckoning includes assistance of friendly aliens in the destruction of their nearly indestructible enemies. The 3 prior Terra Nova novels and original Ember War series should be read.
First, I'm a big fan of Richard's work. His characters are earnest, if flawed, and their challenges are always overwhelming. However, for me, the latest Terra Nova effort feels a bit "phoned in." Still, I gave it four stars based on the strength of previous efforts. Keep 'em coming, Richard!
Well what a great ending to a fantastic storyline gotta great smack down on the big bad emperor but what about his deputy Cygde (spelling incorrect I KNOW lol). Looking forward to see more about the Pathfinder gang
What would you do for your family? I stopped reading a whole different series so I could read this book. I wasn't disappointed. Richard and Josh know how to fish or at least where to throw the hooks. You figure it out....
Felt like a slog to get through this one. The ember war series was good, the armor series was good, the strike marine series was alright, but the whole Terra nova series was just too contrived and cliche. Glad it's over.
Excellent sequel and end to what has been a good series. Somewhat exhausting to follow as it keeps going start to finish. Leading to more spin offs........
I love the Terra Nova Chronicles. In each book the story gets better and better. The characters are wonderful and I think you will enjoy this series as much as I do.
