Even as a baby mage, Dash Mercury dreamed of going to Arcantaria, the barely whispered about school for superwizards. When he’s invited at eighteen, making him the youngest student in Arcantaria history, Dash is less excited because he has to leave behind the only good friends he’s ever had—Carla, BeBop, Khadija, Fatima, and most of all, the guy he loves, werewolf mage Jazz Vanessen. At Arcantaria, the other students treat Dash like dirt until he manages to join the exclusive Olympus Club… a group with an agenda. A scary one.

No one—not even the students—knows where Arcantaria is located, so Jazz is desperate when he picks up danger vibes from Dash. He and his friends set out to find the school and break in. When they realize what the club is training Dash to do—and the dire consequences if he succeeds—they know the human race is in danger, and they’ll have to step up and save it.

But first they have to save themselves.

You may wonder, "why did you read the sequel of a book you disliked so much you gave two stars to it?". Well, you see, I got it as I was starting the first book and before the time I finished and actually knew I highly disliked it. Sunk cost. So I told myself I'd give it a go, with the caveat that if it got too cringe or the scene didn't add to the overall plot I would just skim through it. And if it got too bad, I would just dnf.

It wasn't too bad as to not finish, but it was the same thing as with the last book. The slang was cringy. No one talks with each other and everyone is hinding things from everyone else. Questionable decisions were made that can't be blamed to youth or inexperience. Dash and Jazz love each other so so much they are apart for most of the book and barely get the chance to interact. All adults except for Jazz's family are shady and have an agenda but the teens never actually trust the trustworthy adults to help. There are lots of scenes that are nothing but filler. We even have the same villain, who ends almost in the same situation. I still don't know what Clara adds to the team or what a Drusan is, even though both are relevant to the plot. The magic school concept made no sense.

So, just as bad as the first, not worth the time or money, I regret past me's decision to get it. But at least I'm done with it. I will give Tara one last chance (as I also got the Harker pack series as I am convinced this series is a sequel to it but also it is said they have a very different vibe). If I can't get along with it, I'll just give up on her. Some authors you just don't vibe with

I'm really glad I re-read the first book in the series before jumping into this one since it had been so long since I read the first book. This picks up pretty quickly after the end of the first book. Dash is now at Arcantaria but things aren't as glorious as he was hoping. Somehow he feels like everybody got some memo that he wasn't a guy to become friends with. Meanwhile the rest of the gang are spread out on their own paths and feeling at a loss. When Jazz gets the feeling through his link with Dash that's something's wrong, he's determined to figure out where the hidden Arcantaria is and save his boyfriend from whatever is threatening him.

I do love the group dynamic with these friends. Dash, Jazz, Bebop, Khadija, and Fatima are fun together. Sure, they could have probably reached out to Jazz's family for adult help, but this isn't the family's story, it's the kids. There's a conspiracy afoot and it takes all of them to figure out all the pieces. Dash and Jazz are separate for a lot of the story, and things definitely picked up once Jazz figured out how to get to Dash, but I enjoyed following both sides.

This is a good story, but it does tease that there could be another book, while as far as I know that's not in the works currently, I do hope that someday it comes down the pipeline from the author. I enjoy this world.

I am loving this adventure. This fast paced story is filled with angst and intrigue. Dash and the gang have been split up by attending their various secondary education locations. When Dash finds himself being swept up by a group with an agenda he knows they are going to have to get the gang back together to once again save the day. I love that they all realize that it takes working together to make things happen. This story wraps some things up and leaves us with some intriguing questions, This story will be better if you’ve read Hidden Powers (Superordinary Society #1) but can be read standalone as well.

A Werewolf at Hogwarts? But of course!!

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this series, note that it is s spin-off of Tara's Harker Pack series, where the main characters of this series are first found. A deviation from her usual MM or MMF romances, Tara's ventured into the world of the supernatural with both series. Herein you will find a world populated with were's and magic, which heretofore existed only in her vivid imagination!

In this sequel to Tara's Hidden Powers - Book 1 of the Superordinary Society, Tara has continued her excellent world building. In this book she develops the magically hidden school for magic "Arcantaria". She also reunites the members of the Superordinary Society who were unhappily scattered at the end of book one., and continues to enhance both the characters and their relationships. And the "budding romance" between Jazz and Dash is finally a big component in this story. And as with book 1, lots of action and intrigue! Superordinary Society to the rescue!

At this time I am unaware as to whether or not Tara intends a third book in this series, or even more books in the Harker Pack series, but I certainly remain hopeful! 5 Stars!

*Footnote: Tara is currently in the process of re-releasing her Harker Pack series as Indie published books. However she is not intending to make any changes other than the cover art.

This one was even better than the first one as we have established characters with a real good story. there is a lot of intrigue and angst, romance and friendship.
therefore I really would recommend to read this series in order as there are a lot of important facts from the last book.

in this one is the romance between Jazz and Dash much more prominent and it develops beautifully although they are seperated for a big part of the story.
one fact, which disappointed me a bit is that we don't see Jazz family at all.

some open questions are answered - but new questions arise. so hopefully there will be another book in this series.

all in all a great second book in this series

This return of Dash and Jazz is a great addition to the Superordinary Society series. This continues with the engaging characters and entertaining storyline introduced in book one, Hidden Powers, which really should be read first and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Dash, Jazz, and the Superordinary Society are back! They are all trying to adjust to their new direction and staying connected. Dash is off to magic school and Jazz is off to regular college. They can’t communicate and are having trouble being away from friends. Jazz gets feelings that Dash is in trouble and the Superordinary Society rallies to try and help Dash with whatever is going on. Loved this story! Can’t wait for the next book.

“When you're down and troubled and you need a helping hand and nothing...is going right. Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest night. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am I'll come running...you got a friend.” ~ Carol King

Dash Mercury, of ‘Rising Magic’ by Tara Lain, is not as excited as he thought he would be about Arcantaria. The prestigious school for magic is supposed to be where the “cream of the crop” learn from the best professors of magic that exist and his expectations were high. But Dash can’t enjoy it because the other students treat him like he is an outcast. Since he is the youngest person there and, as the new kid on the block, he expects there to be some time for adjustment, but it's like the others go out of their way to shun him. His professor, Hildebrand, tells Dash that they are just jealous of his superior skills, but Dash can’t help think that there is something more going on.

Dash’s friends in the “normal” world miss him fiercely, especially his boyfriend, Jazz. They understand that he had to go or lose his magic, but are still sad that he isn’t here with them. Before Dash left, he and Jazz had developed an amazing link that kept them in touch with each other, but, since Dash has been gone the once powerful communication between them has faded. Lately, even without the link, Jazz is sure that Dash is in trouble. Jazz becomes obsessed with the idea and shares it with the other members of the Superordinary Society which is composed of his best friends, all of whom have superpowers except for Carla. Eventually, Jazz and Carla transfer colleges and move to New York to be near their other friends in the Superordinary Society. They put their heads together in order to come up with a way to contact Dash and find out what is going on with him; if there is something wrong, they are determined to do whatever they can to fix it.

Dash’s despair grows when he discovers that Jazz was also invited to come to Arcantaria, but chose to stay with his parents and friends instead. Knowing Jazz could have been there with him but decided not to, makes Dash feel even more alone. With the exception of two ladies, Dash continues to be shunned, that is, until Professor Hildebrand takes special notice of Dash and decides to tutor him. Suddenly, when he is invited to join an exclusive group of “especially gifted students” named the Olympus Club, his days of being an outcast cease. The other students aren’t particularly friendly, but they do acknowledge his special wizard skills and the importance of how he can help them accomplish their mission. Dash is wary about the club and begins to suspect that their agenda is less than honorable.

This is the second book in the series and, for me, was even better than the first. It’s an exciting tale full of magic, intrigue, suspense, and most of all, friendship and love. Dash’s friends are amazingly loyal and their affection for him is unwavering and Jazz’s willingness to put himself in danger in order to save his boyfriend, Dash, was inspiring. I loved the ways in which the members of the society work together, using their magical abilities to conquer evil and save their friends. This is not your usual Tara Lain story, but whether it is a contemporary, paranormal, or anything in between, her skills as a storyteller never let me down. Thanks, Tara!

The Superordinary Society are back with plenty of secrets to uncover and a romantic relationship to try and maintain.
Dash has been sent off to superwizard school whilst Jazz, Carla, Beebop, Khadija and Fatima carry on with life in New York. He’s completely cut off from the outside world and struggling to make friends whilst excelling in his classes. Meanwhile, Jazz is getting feelings of discontent and fear through his fuzzy link with Dash, knowing something is wrong and needing to find out what. Not knowing where to begin he turns to his friends, the Superordinary Society and they begin working together as plots and schemes emerge from both within the school and the outside world.
I actually found myself enjoying this book straight away, a little different from book one which took a little while to get in to. I felt that the story flowed much better, flitting between Jazz and Dash’s POV equally, and constantly moving forward in the same direction for everyone. The plot was really interesting with things occurring that slowly, over time, built and connected to give us the bigger picture. It’s a really intriguing plot as you don’t know who you can trust, especially the higher ups in the school which gives that added air of mystery. Their enemy returns from book one but with new connections and methods of madness. New characters are introduced that you can instantly get a read on but then one or two surprise you with their intentions. Jazz and Dash’s relationship, though tested during their long time apart, is one of the catalysts with everything starting as their connection stops and starts through the barrier of the school. It’s clear for both young men that their feelings remain strong and they miss each other greatly.
Again, the group of people involved in the story really help to bring it to life. Jazz, Dash, Carla, Beebop, Khadija and Fatima are a trusted group of friends who know that they can rely on each other for support through anything but especially the supernatural. They also bring lightness when it’s needed, when the going is tough or someone is particularly stressed. Jazz’s family are also big supporters of them all, and you know even with them just as background characters, that they would drop everything if it meant being there for Jazz or even one of his friends if needed.
It all makes for an entertaining read that I’m looking forward to reading more from. There is mystery, new and old relationships develop, and action as Dash proves his worth. Little bits of everything bring the story together well and keep it interesting throughout.
I would recommend reading Rising Magic after Hidden Powers. The main character’s relationship and the friendship group are already established and the plot of the book follows on from book one.

"Rising Magic" is the second volume in the really interesting "Superordinary Society" series by Tara Lain. The first installment of the series was good, but this one is even better, because all "gears" jumped into place and now that the reader is familiar with the characters, it is much easier to keep up with the fast action, surprises that the author has prepared for us and the story itself. A lot happens in "Rising Magic", so the reader will not be bored while reading it even for a moment. Instead, they follow the amazing, dangerous and dramatic events of this volume with attention and commitment. This novel ties the reader to an armchair so that they can't put it down.

I have no doubt that it is also worth paying attention to the fact that in "Rising Magic" we discover new faces of the universe into which the author takes us. The previous volume introduced us to the world of the series, and now our knowledge is slowly expanding and strengthening. Most importantly, however, Tara Lain still has a lot of surprises for us, I'm sure of it. The universe of "Superordinary Society" is full of magic, so there is something new in interesting in every chapter.

What can I say, we don't read this book, we devour it. Or maybe it is the book that devours us? Either way, you must read "Rising Magic". Especially if you like adventure, magic and you want to feel young again or you are a young reader.

Rising Magic picks up a little while after the end of Hidden Powers. The summer's over and everyone's gone their separate ways. But the events of the summer have left their mark on the Superordinary Society and they're finding it hard to get back to their normal lives. When Jazz gets the feeling that Dash is in danger, it gives him the motivation he needs to finally do something other than just go to class. He heads back to New York and gets the crew back together to find the mysterious Arcantaria and save Dash.

This book was a little different from the first one. The wolf packs that were a part of the of the original story and a part of the first book don't really play a role in this one. It focuses more on the Superordinary Society and their individual abilities.

On one side we get to see inside the hidden school and see what really lies behind the walls of Arcantaria. Dash gets to really test his skills and work on them, but at the same time he feels like an outcast and is one the verge of quitting.

On the other side, we have the rest of the society who are putting their all into finding the truth behind all the weird things that are happening around them while also trying to locate something that's been hidden forever.

This book required a heavy dose of suspension of reality. Jazz is supposed to be a newbie mage, and even with his superior werewolf/mage skills, I felt like he'd require some training before being able to do things that people spend their whole lives training for. But everything just comes instinctively for him. He'd hear a spell and get it right the first time, and that just felt a little unbelievable to me. I'd have liked to see more actual training on Jazz's side.

I did like the training we got to see on Dash's side. It gave us more insight into the mage side of things cause so far it's been a lot of wolves. Getting to see more of that was pretty cool, even if most of them were evil!

The story was overall pretty light, with some action scenes. I did like the climax. It was fast paced and kept you on your toes. The romance was hardly there. We got a lot of angsty yearning, but because their were two different storylines that didn't come together until like 75%, there wasn't a lot of actual romance.

I'd recommend this if you're looking for a light paranormal-fantasy with a heavy dose of found-family and a light romance!

Magic, werewolves and mayhem

Rising Magic is the second book in the Superordinary Society series and follows directly after Hidden Powers. That story should be read first before diving into this new chapter in the adventures of Dash Mercury and Jazz Vanessen and the rest of the gang.

In this sequel to Hidden Powers, Tara Lain added a bit more layer and depth to the great world-building done previously. The readers get to see more of Arcantaria and the inner workings of this magical school. If the first book in the series was all about Jazz, then this book is Dash-centric. The readers get to see more of our magical genius - his thoughts, feelings and how he navigates the treacherous politics and student life inside the elite school.

New characters were also introduced in this story and they are interesting to say the least. A certain someone made a comeback here which shed a bit more light into what he is all about. Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing a book about this certain character and a particular red-head hooking it up and having their own redemption arc.

The other members of the Superordinary Society reunites in this book and their relationship with each other is further developed as they once again put their skills and genius to work in order to save the world. BeBop in particular had some very nice moments in the spotlight. The romance between Jazz and Dash got a bit more focus in here but it still played second fiddle to the overall plot. There were plenty of action in this book though there were parts of it that was a bit slow in pacing. The twists and turns and the mystery will keep the reader guessing. A number of questions were answered but news ones also came to surface.

Overall, the book is a very fun, light read. The overall tone is really leaning towards the YA/NA age category and might put off some people. Still, like the first installment, Rising Magic is engaging, witty and action-packed with a dash of romance. Its characters are interesting and the overall world is fascinating. I am giving this 4 stars out of 5. If ever a new book may come out of this series, I definitely would read it.

I received an ARC of this book via GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.

This is the sequel to Hidden Magic, which I'd recommend you read before heading into this, as it gives you much needed introduction to the world of Jazz and the Superordinary Society.

Jazz's boyfriend Dash has received all he ever wanted since he knew he had magic, which is entry to the mage academy Arcantaria - but you better be careful what you wish for as it's not always what it's cracked up to be. Something is amiss in the halls of Arcantaria.

Meanwhile Jazz and his friends have gone off to college and separated from each other, things just aren't going well for Jazz at all. He can't get hold of Dash except a vague feeling that something's wrong so sets off on his mission to find out where his boyfriend is and rescue him if need be.

As the plot unfolds it turns into a plot by some at the mage academy to elevate magicians above normal people and to do that they need their master, who Jazz and friends imprisoned in the first book (see? I told you you should have read the first).

It's a fast-paced, fun adventure with Jazz and the superordinary society which for me raised far more questions than answers. Who are Jazz's parents? What exactly IS BeBop and why can see things others can't? I think I finally worked out Khadija and Fatima's secret, but I want to know more about them too. Two books isn't enough and this world has enough scope for more, should the author revisit.

I liked these books, they're best read together though, so persevere with the first because it has a LOT of setup which is worth it for the payoff at the end of that book and into this one.

More please.

I received an ARC of this from the author and this is my honest review.

Tara is allowing us into her world of magic. I love the way she explains it so you feel like you are there with the characters.

Dash battled a powerful wizard and won so he gets invited to a prestigious school for wizards. He leaves his friends but finds the school isn't it is all cracked up to be. Since he is the youngest student no one treats him well.

He wonders if it was worth coming here until things start to happen.

Jazz misses Dash since he left, they became so close and now he is gone. Jazz has a feeling something is wrong and he need to find Dash and find out. Along with their other friends, he sets out to figure out what is wrong.

With the help of their old friends and some new ones they get to the bottom of what is going on. When they all work together they foil the evil plot and save the day again.

I love Tara's stories but this one was hard to follow for me in places. It is a mystery and you will be trying to figure out how this group of kids fit into the bigger plan.

Delightful YA adventure with magic, intrigue, action and good vs evil.  The story-line was engaging and kept me reading the entire book in one sitting. The characters were well crafted and i really loved both Jazz and Dash. It was awesome to read about the previous MC's from the original series.

This YA series is the long awaited spin off to the Tales of the Harker Pack, which i loved. The readers of that series met a young boy named Jazz, and this story centers around him and the key MC's in that series.  Jazz is older now and has had a huge adventure in book one, Hidden Powers.  We now find him at the school for superwizards and how he and Dash and their friends, find their way out of the mess is really very well done. .

Jazz and  Dash have an amazing connection and i am looking forward to watching them both grownup.

This is book two of the Superordinary Society series and would be best read in the order written, because much of the story-line springboards from book one.  If you just read this book, you may find that you are overwhelmed with characters and a rich backstory that you don't understand.

I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my honest opinion and review.

This is the second book in a series, and you’ll want to have read the first one for context on both characters and world building, especially since this series is a spinoff of one of the author’s other series, and there are a lot of faces, and plenty of history, that inform what goes on here. It’s worth making sure you’re up to date for this story, as I think all of the groundwork laid in the first book really pays off here. The complex, layered world building gets another layer (and why yes, it is a magic school, a compelling and recognizable trope given it’s own unique spin in this novel). Characters we met in the earlier installment we really get to know on these pages, and bonds develop and strengthen in really interesting ways-- readers looking for more progress in the Dash/ Jazz romance will find that here. There’s peril, angst magic, intrigue, and, of course, the day-saving heroics of the Superordinary Society, all of which make for an immersive read. There’s a complete story here, but more than enough room, and foundation, for these characters to have further adventures, and I’m looking forward to reading them if they do.

Dash has always wanted to attend Arcantaria, a school for super wizards. Now at 18, he is there and it is not like he expected. He misses his friends and his love, Jazz. He is not accepted as he is the youngest and he thinks something is up. Then he is invited to the Olympus Club and he becomes even more sure that something is not right. But no one knows where the school is and he cannot communicate with the outside world or can he?

Jazz feels some bad vibes that he is sure originate with Dash. He and his friends realize they must find him and uncover a plot that could change their lives and everyone else’s. The Superordinary Society has a new task – save the world but first themselves.

This is book two in The Superordinary Society and it just keeps getting better. The relationship between Jazz and Dash is strong enough to reach across magical barriers. They know there are problems in the magery and both want to work to prevent them along with their friends. All the society members were incredible and they believed in each other. It was amazing to see. The plot unfolded magnificently and dragged you in to the point you did not want to put the book down. I can’t wait for the next book.

Superordinary is right!

Ok, I was ready to dive into this one after book 1 and I was not disappointed! While it started a bit slow for me, I think that was because I wanted to jump ahead and I needed to get the new basics this book had. The Superordinary Society has split up to do that growing up thing, college, jobs, what comes next… and yet, none of them are really happy or comfortable in that skin. It’s only when they start to come back together and work as a team to thwart the next threat that they realize their potential lies with each other.

It was interesting to see who turns out to be ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and how that morphs as the story goes on. Once again, the author weaves multiple subplots throughout the book, and I found myself itching to turn the page and find out what happened next. This series is so much fun to read and I really want to see where the subplots that were left unresolved lead. Superordinary is right!

Dash and his friends are back at it. Dash is now going to the mage school Arcantaria, but things are not going as planned. When he finally finds his place, he is not so sure about things, but he needs the help of his true friends. Yet no one not even Dash knows where Arcantaria is located so how will the friends get back together?

This is a fun and engaging adventure geared more towards a YA style. It is the second in a spin off series. I enjoyed seeing the kids all back together and working towards a common goal. They each have strong personalities and realize that fighting together is what needs to be done. It was nice to see the friendships and how they strengthen. The kids are growing up and turning into adults that will be strong and unbeatable.

The second book in the Superordinary Society series (and I'm hoping there will be many more) takes place a few months after the end of the first. The Society has saved the world and they're all off to college. Or in Dash's case, super mage school.
But mage school is lonely and the teachers seem more intent on separating the "elite" mages from the "ordinary". Jazz isn't faring too much better at Yale. And Carla is having a hard time fitting in at Harvard.
When Jazz senses that Dash is in trouble, he'll move heaven and earth to get to his mage. But it seems the adults in the know, don't want to help. Or even believe him.
It's time for the Society to jump into action. And we have another fun romp of a book. With enjoyable, sweet and very intelligent characters. A quick read. Great fun.

Dash has finally achieved his goal to attend his dream magic school, Arcantaria. Missing his friends and love of his life, Jazz, he tries to adapt, but some things just aren't as they should be. His instincts are in fact, correct.
Jazz's intuition is also right. Feeling the connection, friends are gathered to save the world from the dangers to come.
Can't save anyone else until those doing the saving are first out of harm's way.

Book one was a good introduction to the many characters we met along the way. Book two provides a complete picture and even more entertaining than the first.

I really enjoyed this book the 2nd in the Superordenary series, it was fun catching with what was going on in the lives of the superordenary gang now that they were growing up and going their own separate ways. From the first page to the last Tara Lain wove an interesting tale that kept you reading one page to the next until you read the whole story totally satisfied with the way the gang worked together to find the answers to an extraordinary situation one of their own found themselves involved in, and how they can save him before it's to late and when everything is right in the world again, going back to their ordinary lives till they stumble into their next adventure.

This is the continuation from the first book, Hidden Powers. Jazz, Dash and all their friends have gone back to their respective schools. Dash is headed off to magic school where he has problems fitting in. He cannot talk with Jazz or any of his friends, but Jazz feels like there is trouble on the horizon for Dash. Loved this story!! Sooo good! It was well written and a page turner. Definitely recommend! Overall I seriously loved their story and cannot wait for the next! I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

Dash and Jazz are facing no contact if Dash wants to keep his magic. But not all is as it seems at the magic school Dash is sent to and Jazz feels as if there is something missing. Along with their friends, Jazz is determined to find Dash. Dash makes a few friends, maybe friends, as he faces the weirdness that is happening at the school. You will be pulled into this story from the beginning.

I don't know if there will be more but if the author is wondering what the readers feel, I vote for more. Absolutely fascinating world with amazing characters.

Jazz, Dash and the rest of the paranormal Scooby gang are back and this time, in addition to saving the world, they've got to find and save Dash who has gone off to a wizard school that hides its location from both students and everyone else. I loved book one, but I enjoyed this one even more. The search for Dash and the school, the deepening relationship between Jazz and Dash and the insight into what's really going on in the world made for another great one-sitting read.

In the second book jazz and dash are separated because of school & they really miss each other! Their bond is weak because of the magic surrounding dash’s school but somehow jazz can still feel that dash is in danger so him and his friends go on another adventure to save their friend and the rest of the world!
This story does have a happy ending but there’s still a bit of a cliffhanger so be on the lookout for a third book! 😁❤️

I knew when Jazz in wolf form didn't kill their enemy it was going to be trouble. With Dash incommunicado at the "Superwizard School" Jazz and the rest of the Superordinary Society have to find a way to make contact. Jazz knows he can feel Dash and eventually very super things happen. I love this part two to the Jazz and Dash falling in love story! I highly recommend it! “I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.”

I have questions......

Will Bebop get a story, will the kitten get a name, is Bebop a supe. Who was his parents.

Other than that I loved the follow on story of Dash and Jazz. I wished we found out if there was some connection other than Jazz and Nardo being the same kinds of beings.
Dash has learned lots, but I think he is destined to be a master mage. So there is possibly more to learn.
