It seems unlikely that you could make a page-turner from a book describing the history and nature of linear features, natural and artificial, crossing what's often considered one of Britain's least distinctive counties. But as someone who started as a somewhat reluctant resident of The Shire, I found this book led me to look at it through different eyes. Apparently, until the last glaciation the River Trent flowed into The Wash. Who knew? From the history of Fen drainage to Cold War structures still dotted around the landscape, it's all here. And the photos are excellent. Thoroughly recommended.
