Jingen the dragon had completely destroyed Jingen City, Marielle was saved by Tamerlan and they escaped with Jhinn in his gondola to another city but were stopped from travelling further because the Queen Mer's retribution boats were stopping anyone from travelling on the water. They were forced to stop in the city of Xin. Both Marielle and Tamerlan blamed themselves for unleashing the dragon and bringing ruin to so many lives, and both wanted to atone for their sins by killing the dragon. However Tamerlan told Marielle that she was not at fault and that it was he who had caused this when he had unleashed the heroes of legend who crossed over the bridge. Marielle could not decide whether Tamerlan was a demon or an angel and she had very strong feelings for him but justice was everything for her. Tamerlan on the other hand put her on a pedestal thinking she was the only good thing left in the crazy world. As the city of Xin prepared to celebrate the festival of Dawnspell, and the start to a new year, the dragon re-appears and chaos reigns once more with people fleeing for their lives, and refugees having no place to turn to. Tamerlan is forced to smoke his herbs once again and seek further help from the heroes, but these never do what is expected of them and Etienne does the same with terrible results which they would both have to see reversed if possible, but time cannot be reversed. Tamerlan was adamant that he would save the one currently paying the price for their magic use! Can they save the islands and restore peace by binding the dragon once again? This series is so exciting, the characters really charismatic and I am really immersed in the story and have to go on reading the next book!
Dawnspell by Sarah K.L. Wilson is book two in her Bridge of Legends series. Book two picks up where book left off. Jingen has been destroyed by the dragon the city was named after. Thousands of lives lost, Tamerlan wounded, Etienne – a Lord Mythos without a city, and Marielle without a City Watch to call herself a member of. They are on the run. The dragon is on the loose and the survivors of the slaughter and destruction are fleeing in hopes of finding safety. Now, we continue forward to learn what happens next. The Bridge of Legends has been opened…and there is no closing it until things are made right. Dawnspell reaches out from the beginning, grabs you, and doesn’t let up or let go as you read along to learn what happens next. Tamerlan set out with a noble goal in mind – to save his sister from being the Lady Sacrifice for the dragon. He and others thought that the rituals were just based on dusty old words, nothing actually based on fact. Tamerlan has been burned by his experience with the Legends. The shocking truth is that they are still with him. They “haunt” him waiting for their next opportunity. But things are changing. They’ve sought refuge at the next city, but the people at this neighboring city are less than welcoming. I was honestly shocked at the differences in the city. The City Watch are cowards and instead of stopping trouble before it starts, they slink away and hide. There are undercurrents of danger and mystery as Etienne seems to be keeping strange company. The Lady Allegra, has her own agenda, but it remains hidden for the moment. Tamerlan has his secrets, but how long will they remain so? The Legends are pressuring him to use him. They say that they can help him, but they each have their own agendas. New characters are introduced and danger slinks in their shadows. I have to admit that I like and appreciate their no-nonsense demeanors. This book is seriously full of twists, surprises, and a shocking turn of events near the end. I kept thinking and hoping that there would be a last minute intervention, but that’s not the case. I will admit that when the first book ended the raging question for me was…what happened to Tamerlan’s sister?? The author answers this question, but still leaves me with questions concerning her. I’m hopeful that I’ll get more answers in the third book. Things are getting really interesting and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you enjoyed the first book in this series then I seriously encourage you to pick this book and dive in.
Another instalment in the Bridge of Legends story, DAWNSPELL was just as much twisty fun as the first book. As in the previous book, I adored the gut-wrenching moral dilemmas and the dreadful consequences that drive this story; and as in the previous book, I found myself yearning just a bit for a deeper development of the characters. It's not that they aren't wonderfully conceptualised people - I'm particularly fond of Marielle with her savagely naive black-and-white sense of justice, and Tamerlan, who is a lovable idiot with a hero complex and an unfortunate addiction to magic herbs - it's just that I wanted to see them take a few breaks from the heroics to just interact and be. I'm not sure if the series is ever going to give me that...but hey! at least it's giving me lickety-split adventure and dire consequences!
i liked Dawnspell much better than the first book, here we ger more action, but insight into characters and Legends as well, which made it easier for me to connect with characters. I didn't like nor understood the nature of Legends, but here it was passed in the was that I really liked. Marielle and Tamerlan try to ave the world after what had happened in book one, but will it be that easy, or some new players will how, and maybe some new allies from unexpected place if that ould be possible? Read Dawnspell to find out what will happen next, an if Marielle and Tamerlan can prevent the worst from happening?
From cliffhanger to cliffhanger, this book is fast paced and keeps the interest. After the dragon wakes (because of the decision not to share blood) many thousands of citizens are killed - and the dragon is now free to wreak more damage in the world. I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next in the series.
This picks up right after the dragon destroyed Jingen. All of the characters are consumed by guilt over the deaths of the entire city and are looking for the Abelmeyer's Eye an amulet that can be used to stop the dragons rampage. Things go from bad to worse when Etienne uses the legends spell and it backfires.
"I have to find an amulet and use it to stop the dragon. I owe the world that. All the destruction that dragon caused – it’s all my fault.” Jhinn shrugged. “You didn’t make the dragon. You didn’t build a city on him.”
Jhinn is speaking what I was feeling for real. Etienne gave both Tamerlan and Marielle so much grief and blame for the dragon escaping.
When starting the first book for the first time back in 2019, I had every intention of continuing on with the series but unfortunately arcs got in the way, haha, and I’m finally starting it up again after a reread of the first.
The book is told from two point-of-views: Marielle and Tamerlan. Each character has a different personality and what they want to focus on. I will say that even though they both can be empathetic, each one still has a different line as to what they will do for those around them, especially those they care about. Even though they are together for some of the book, they each have their own missions when it comes to being in a new city and it does keep them a part at times. It is nice to have the dual perspective to fill in the gaps and tell us exactly what they are thinking.
My favorite character is a guy named Jhinn. He has been loyal to Tamerlan since the first book after he saved his boat from being set on fire. It’s also interesting that he can see the legends who interact with Tamerlan as well as being able to hear them. I feel like there is more to him that we don’t know and I’m excited to see what he does in the next few books!
Other characters from book one do come back as well. One in particular has their own motives and it’s hard to decide if I like or despise them. I still don’t have my mind made up, haha.
One thing that this author does well is plot twists! I love being surprised by the characters that appear or even the choices that the characters make. It’s never a dull moment while reading her work.
The sequel does end on another cliffhanger and it is one that is rather large. Since the problems in book one haven’t been resolved yet and more seem to appear, I am curious how book three will go. Are more surprised in store for me?
Overall, I enjoyed the sequel. I forgot how much I liked these characters and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
What a wonderful book. Poor Tamerlan can not seem to get anything right, now the woman he likes is trapped in a clock. I can not wait to see what happens next. Ok time for Autmungale next. At least the Dragon is down right now, but they have to stop Grandfather Timeless.
A FIVE STAR for me!!! Yes I was not happy with the first book giving it only a 3 because I couldn't understand how Tamerlan's seemingly infatuation with Marielle, would have him choosing to save Marielle and abandoning his Sister and father to their unknown fate.
The whole driving force of the first book had been to save Tamerlin's sister's life but book 2 resolves the issue almost immediately and continues to build the true characters of Tamerlin and Marielle having to deal with consequences of each of their decisions and some how find a way to stop the destruction of a loose, uncontrolled and very hangry dragon! Yep hungry and angry! Wouldn't you be after sleeping through as many breakfasts as he has? It's only natural that his first target of choice seems to be the smokehouse Towers in each town he attacks.
I'm a big fan of their gondolaer, Jhinn, and all "Legends" except for "Grandfather Timeless" and "Maid Chaos"!! Very appropriately named, I can see Chaos remaining a maiden forever since she kills everything that comes near her she's not very likely to to come across either a woman or man to take away her maiden status! And Grandfather Timelss doesn't seem to have to have time for anyone not on his schedule of evil!
I Kind of feel sorry for the dragons. I also can't help but wonder if maybe Marielle's mysterious missing mother might have survived the initial attack and her home been still stuck on the back of the Dragon "Jingen", and, by the way, how did the Dragons of Xin and H'yi manage to sleep through "Jingen" 's attacks on their cities?
Marielle is freed —but so is the dragon! Now what?!
This episode opens with Tamerlan and Marielle fleeing the destroyed Jingen City with Jhinn in his gondola. Tamerlan is feeling deep guilt over: 1) his actions (in book 1) when he was under the influence of the Legends; and in 2) choosing to save Marielle rather than allowing her blood fed to the dragon to keep it bound for another year, as so many people had suffered and died when the dragon awoke. Now, the dragon Jingen is still free to wreak destruction on mankind. We see Lord Mythos returned in new, less royal role, as he, too, works to find a way to control the freed dragon. Can the dragon be stopped?
The fast-paced action in this book keeps the reader turning the page until the very end. Tamerlan and Marielle begin a tentative friendship that feels as if it may have potential to blossom into something more—if only circumstances would allow it! Ms. Wilson has created another clean epic fantasy that delights, excites and hooks readers into this enjoyable series. Perfect for teens—action, fantasy and thoughtfully drawn characters that are dealing with their own coming-of-age issues. However, I am a testament to the fact that it appeals to readers of all ages!
I received a free copy of this book. My review is voluntary and my own opinion. I have no financial relationship with either the author or publisher.
After finishing up the first in this new series I wasn't sure where the story would go in Dawnspell or if I was even going to like direction. I like this book more than first one even though the scent explanations were still a little overdone for me.
I feel like there was more action in this book than the first too. There was more lore involved in this story. You get a different viewpoint on the legends as well, and I found myself enjoying the banter going on in Tamerlan's head. He is determined to to set right what he previously set in motion, but it's not as easy as he thinks it will especially with Lord Mythos now involved as well. Who knew Etienne had so many connections outside of Jingen.
Marielle plays a central role in this book which I am quite happy about. Her Scenting ability can still be distracting at times, but overall she is a strong character. I like to see how she is changing, but not at the same time. She is pulled in many directions during the chaos that is the aftermath of the destruction if Jingen.
I am very much looking forward to what happens to our heroes and heroine in the next. I would definitely recommend this book
The second book in the Bridge of Legends and Tamerlan and Marielle are both ridden by guilt at freeing the dragon Jingen (in book 1). There are new interesting characters coming into the story, will they be of any help? The Legends try to come into the world again but this will cost a price Tamerlan is not prepared to pay, or is he? The end is heart wrenching and makes everything so much worse! I liked this book even more than book 1. Even though I'm still overwhelmed by all the scent description (especially as I can't find a pattern, one colour/scent for each emotion). But the Legends seem to come to life more and Etienne is an interesting character. I have no idea where this story will go from now, so can't wait to read the next book.
Marielle and Jhinn (with Tamerlan unconscious in the gondola) flee the city of Jingen after the Dragon Jingen rose, causing the deaths of thousands and the destruction of the city.
Reaching the closest city Marielle attempts to get help for Tamerlan, finding the only help available is from Lord Mythos, now a diminished leader trying to find his own way without the powerful magic he once had access to.
Marielle ends up owing not only Lord Mythos but also the healer he takes her to and the Harbingers (who have also taken her under their wing, beginning to teach her more of what her brand of magic can do).
The ongoing conversations between Tamerlan and the legends are engaging and even more amusing when it is pointed out again that no-one else (except Jhinn) can hear the legends.
I loved this book. It is a much more involved plot than I thought it would be, but that is marvellous. Tamerlan and Marielle have escaped their home city of Jingen and moved to the next one - Xin. Unfortunately it is not any safer there, as the Dragon Jingen is still at large and bent on destroying everything. They eventually join up with someone whom they regarded as an enemy, but find that they must trust them. Marielle joins with another group also, but is inevitably drawn back to Tamerlan. They do all they can to try and make things right, but things don't always go the way people want them to and the two find themselves in a really bad situation with life and death choices.
Tamerlan, Marielle and Jhinn are making their way out of the remains of Jingen and end up in the City of Xin. Marielle tries to get help for Tamerlan and ends up getting help form the last place she would expect. All things come at a price however, and some are harder to pay for than others. So much is going on, and there are surprises and twists along the way. I can't wait to see how things progress in book 3.
I enjoyed reading this segment of Tamerlan and Marielle's story. This book was full of action and the characters really pulled me in. The end was agonizing and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but my opinions are my own.
My head is still spinning from reading the end of this book. I am literally stunned at how this ended . I realise it continues in the next book but this one takes your breath away. All action throughout with magic and spirits of Legends abounding. Your attention is most definitely riveted in this series and you certainly feel that you are there IN the story.
Tamerlan and Marielle have freed the dragon, Jingen, destroying the city. They flee to the next island city with the help of Jhinn. There they try to find some way to stop the dragon from destroying other island cities. They find new allies or maybe they are enemies. And it seems everyone has their own agenda. Even better than the first one.
This is the second book in the Bridge of Legends and we get to watch as Tamerlan and Marielle are both ridden by guilt at freeing the dragon Jingen in the first book of the series. As always this author has interesting characters that fit the world perfectly. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
Easily one of my favorite series by Sarah KL Wilson. The build up to the end is just SO good!! All the characters are great, but Etienne really became one of my favorites in this book. :D I wish this entire series was on audible.
This part cracked me up: "Etienne looked around dramatically before asking dryly. 'Is the dragon attacking the city?'"
Book two in the series and just as good if not better than the first one. Can the Legends get In anymore scrapes. Of course they can. Then there is the dragon in the mix as well. Roll on book three. Highly recommended.
Continuing to love this story! I can tell there's so much more in store still, and I'm so looking forward to it! This feels like a very well-planned plot, how everything fits together both in the past and present.
A fantastic read. Especially if you love Dragons. A fast paced read that has you on the edge of your seat. This is a fantastic storyline. And the Author makes the Characters come to life in this read. I can see the Characters vividly as the book goes, I definitely recommend Shauna Joesten
Second book about Tamerlan, Marielle and the legends. I love these books, and I would definitely recommend reading them. Looking forward to see what's happening next in book 3.
