Silver Shifters #3

Silver Unicorn

Rate this book
If life begins at 40, why does it feel like it passed her by?

Until Jen’s husband died, her life revolved around him and his award-winning work. Now she's a 50-something childless widow looking ahead to a long, lonely retirement. Her meetings with the Baker Street Writers' Group are the only bright spots in her week.

And then he sweeps in -- handsome, brilliant, and amazing, definitely the kind of man who wouldn't be interested in a woman like Jen. Even if his touch sets her on fire, and she could lose herself forever in his eyes. But she can't help feeling like he's hiding something. She's not going to let herself go through this again, and lose her heart to a man who could never put her first.

Of course if he was going to finally find his mate, it would happen at the worst possible time!

King of an island of shifters, Nikos is in town to help his old friends Mikhail and Joey with their evil-dragon problem, and now he's lost himself in a pair of beautiful eyes.

Jen is kind, lovely, and stronger than she knows, a perfect match for his unicorn. There's nothing he wants more than to worship her as she deserves. But he has to hold her at arm's length. If she's hurt because of him, he'll never forgive himself.

But neither of them are prepared for a shocking transformation that will rock both their worlds to the core, and open both their hearts up to a kind of love they never believed existed.

A romance with a dash of comedy, plenty of action, and a wildly romantic courtship on a magical island paradise!

💢 Talk about Action Packed, WOW
I just love that touch of silver.
Definitely a Must Read!

🔹️Jen Carlsen husband passed away many years, the grief was bad. But she is trying to move on can she? Writing was starting to come to her, Jen always wanted to. When a stranger comes to town, her catch phrase “Rubber Chicken “ comes back let alone her libido gets going. But there is more to Jen that meets the eye.

🔹️ Nikos Demitros is Greek and a Unicorn. He was summoned by Joey to come to Playa del Encanto, a small town on the coast of Southern California. They needed help with an artifact that came up from an earthquake. But Long Cang and his men wanted it too. He would get it no matter who he had to kill to do it.

☄️ This review is my own opinion, this author is one that I love to read her books.

Silver Unicorn by Zoe Chant was an entertaining magical adventure with Jen from the Baker Street Writers' Group. She's the youngest member of the foursome and a widow. Nikos is a winged unicorn and "king" of his small Greek island. Romance, friendships that are family, trouble both in California and Nikos' island and magic made this book one that I enjoyed from the beginning.

DNF after 40%

I wanted to like this book because the hero was a unicorn shifter. But I’m afraid that I just got bored with the storyline and couldn’t muster up any interest in the characters. Sorry.

Lucky The Second Time Around

Jen Carlsen, one of the members of the Baker Street Writers' group whom we've met since the beginning of the series was a woman who'd felt like life has passed her by. For over five decades she'd dedicated her life to her late husband his work, she always came in second place with him.

She had no children and she was saw her upcoming retirement as a lonely and sad one. That was until she met him, a friend of her new friends, Mikhail ( SILVER DRAGON ) and Joey ( SILVER FOX ). But no matter how handsome, intelligent and smart he was, he would never be interested in a woman like her (that's what she thought).

Nikos Demitros, Kind of Vasilikos Alogo, an Island of shifters in the Adriatic sea was in town to lend a helping hand to his friends Joey and Mikhail with their renegade dragon Cang problem. He never expected to find his mate, especially not with danger lurking around. But he did as she was perfect for him.

Jen was everything he ever wanted in a mate, she is kind, amazing and a lot stronger than he thought, he tried to keet her at arm's length but the fate had other plans for him. They were meant for one another and no amount of pushing her away was going to work. Danger found them just when their relationship was growing stronger. They both handled the peril perfectly.

Long Cang was becoming a pain in Nikos, Jen and their friends' neck. Jen was hurt badly and it was up to Nikos and his Unicorn to save their mate, no matter what. And they did the only thing they could at the moment to keep her alive. When she found out, she was surprised and excited at the same time.

It was great to catch up with Joey, Doris, Mikhail and Bird. Can't wait for Godiva to get her story ;). Also it was a treat to meet new intriguing characters.

SILVER UNICORN is the third book in Zoe Chant's SILVER SHIFTERS series. What a fun, adventurous and alluring ride. Excellent job by Zoe Chant. Two thumbs up and a recommendation for you guys to give this book a try!

A fairytale romance for those of us who think maybe our golden years aren't so golden!

I love the way Zoe Chant invents characters readers can't help but fall in love with! Her Silver Shifter series, though,is guaranteed to appeal to readers who have reached the age where magic seems to have passed them by. If like me, you can vaguely remember a time in your childhood where you could not only feel magic in the air, you could easily see it wherever you looked. But sometime around our 30-40's, life and responsibilities took over and there was no time for magic. Zoe Chant's Silver Shifters novels introduce us to four women who are trying to rediscover that lost sense of wonder.

Silver Unicorn is book three in the series. By now, two of the four friends have found true love, and are having the time of their lives, rediscovering (reinventing?) , their sense of adventure and fantasy. But their 40 something friend a widow of 4 years,is still struggling to rejoin the world. But Zoe Chant has a plan for this character which will blow her mind!

Zoe Chant pulls out all the stops in this paranormal romance. In previous books she has introduced us to mythical shifters such as dragons, a nine-tail fox, and a Qilin ( a hooved dragon-like creature with antlers and a horse body). In Silver Unicorn the male protagonist a Silver Unicorn ,of course, is accompanied by other winged creatures like hippogriffs, chollimas, and a host of other winged horses. Zoe Chant's imagination combined with her skilled word craft makes these fantastical animals as real as the horses outside my window, grazing in my neighbors pasture. Silver Unicorn is an adult fairytale, complete with a courtship fit for a queen, on a magical Greek island paradise.

Jen, the female main character, is like her three friends, finally beginning to find herself apart from world where previously she followed her husband's lead. Again, Jen is someone who is easy to relate to; far from perfect but possesses a strength of character that draws you to her. Zoe Chant characterization of Jen and Nikos, has my heart singing and my soul seeking the magic I used to believe in my youth! Their romance reminds me of modern version of Camelot, full of laughter, tears and of course, happily ever after.

But no fairytale is without a villain, and Silver Unicorn has more than one, and the battle that takes place in more than one dimension. Here Zoe's storyteller talent is showcased with non-stop action that had me hanging on for dear life as I flew with winged horses, battled dragons, hellhounds, to save Niko's kingdom of mythical warriors. There were several throat- constricting, heart-stopping moments and a surprising revelation as Jen fights for her chance at everlasting love. I laughed, I cried and finally bellowed out a loud cheer as once again true love triumphed over evil in this wonderful example of paranormal fiction at it's best!

Zoe Chant, take a well deserved bow. Silver Unicorn may just be my favorite of all your books thus far!

This was a short read and rather slow-paced. At first I thought the main impediment for Nikos and Jen would be Nikos' reluctance to acknowledge her as his mate, and his laser focus on duty & responsibility towards his charges at home. But it turns out that wasn't it. Instead, for most of the book, Jen and Nikos cannot physically be together. That's because something happens and as a result, they can communicate with each other, but they can't hang out and do stuff together, especially sexy stuff.

So this contrived to keep them apart for a lot of the book and as a result it felt like they took forever to actually get together. Add to this the fact that the bedroom scene, when we finally get it, is skimmed over with hardly any description, so it felt very unsatisfying. "He bent to devour one breast, then the other" is about the only foreplay there is. I'm used to shifter stories being more descriptive, but also after all the build up, I did expect much more.

The attraction between mates was present but just not sizzling. The whole thing felt very low-key, almost like something you could ignore, rather than an irresistible force drawing two people together. I think I didn't like how Nikos was reluctant to acknowledge Jen as his mate in the beginning. He wasn't happy or grateful to have found her, and didn't immediately move to get to know her better or court her, as a decisive alpha would do once they met their fated mate. Again, I'm used to shifter stories where this happens, and it's what I prefer. Humans waffle; shifters shouldn't waffle. If I want to read waffling, I'll read a contemporary romance.

I did like how Jen was a strong and capable woman, and how she adapted to the knowledge of the shifter world. But the mystery of the Transfer Gate was never solved and it seems everyone forgot about that -- at first they were worried about how it would affect Jen, but then no one ever brings it up again. No one seems to have informed the celestial empress of what occurred, either. If they have, she hasn't appeared or given any new instructions; it makes me wonder if the empress really cares.

I don't have any feelings about Jen being an older lady -- 55 years old -- but I do think it was unnecessary to end the book the way that the author did. I wanted to roll my eyes. I suppose it is part of the HEA, giving Jen everything she wanted, but it felt contrived. I mean, there are many things we might have dreamt of when we were younger and simply can no longer have, and that's just part of life.

This is an OK shifter romance, with a likable couple. I liked many of the supporting characters, too, and hope we'll get books for more of the women in the writing group.

I liked Nikos, but I wished we had gotten more of his backstory. I also wanted more information about his shifter island, why he was king there, and the shifters he worked with. Some of the book was a little confusing, and that additional information would have helped.

My favorite part of this story, though, was that both Nikos and Jen were older, and thought they had lost their chance at love -- but they were wrong, because they were perfect for each other. If you like shifter romances with older couples, this is an excellent choice.

One problem I have with all of Zoe Chant's series is that there is so long between books. Lots of times I have to go back and reread some of the earlier books in a series, simply because it has been so long that I don't remember all the characters. That is frustrating. I know Zoe Chant is actually a group of authors, and one person writes all the books in a series -- but I wish the books in a series could be published closer together.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, or I didn't like the characters.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some problems with it. This rating usually means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, or it was just too unrealistic.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Reviewed at Shifter Haven

Silver Unicorn is the third title in the Silver Shifters series, and while I’ve loved the earlier books this one blew me away – and I’m tempted to do an immediate reread to pick up nuances I’m sure I missed in needing to know what happens next.

Jen and Nikos’ story builds slowly, gaining speed and intensity along the way until the reader is swept away into a story that I certainly didn’t want to end any time soon. Unfortunately, I don’t feel that I can safely talk about Silver Unicorn without giving away vital spoilers – and I don’t willingly do spoilers. Most of what you’d need to know before picking up this title can be found in the Cover Description. What you won’t find there is the emotional impact that this couple has on each other or how the mythical creatures you’re about to meet will dazzle and engage or enrage you on so many levels. Jen’s transformation is stunning, and watching the connection between these mates as they adjusted to what has happened is magical.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love and am addicted to the many “Zoe Chant” series, yet this story is up there in my top five favorites of all, and I don’t see it leaving that spot for a very long time, if ever. I would highly recommend Silver Unicorn and the entire series to any Paranormal Romance or Shifter Romance reader without hesitation. I’m also aware that not everyone enjoys the same stories — but this one stunned me, in a good way, and my anticipation for the next story in the series is running very, very high right now.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

A grownup magical fairytale

There is so much that I can say about this book. The whole series, really, it's refreshing, we don't have the usual characters, but that is a great thing. Both of them are old, but still in their prime, and they complement each other perfectly.

There are a few subtle things that I really appreciated about the book, like the way Nikos feels for Jen, there is a phrase I loved: "I've known since the day we fought Cang's minions that I did not have to guard you, that we would stand together side by side". And that's one of the things I loved, unlike other shifter romances, Nikos is not overprotective, but recognizes and appreciates Jen's strength.

From Jen, I really appreciate the way she looks at her past, because her background could have opened the doors for her to be bitter or to be a victim, but the way she takes only the best, and instead of regrets she gets lessons. For her her life is not a waste of time, but a lifetime of learnings, and she takes this new opportunity to truly live her own way.

In this book, a person who has always dreamed of magic, gets her wish, and a person who lived by honor and duty gets what he never dared to wish for. It was magic.

I think this book is really something worth reading.

Struggled with this one.
Though I enjoyed the continuation of the mature ladies of the writing group finding mates, I have to say I found this one slow and ponderous at times.
When we kept getting hints of Jens life with her deceased husband Robert, I wanted to shake her, then slap her.
She spent over 30 years as a mouse, a doormat and a shadow to Roberts world and passion. She basically ceased to be a person in her own right.
When I read that Robert announced that as a wedding present for Jen, he had had a vasectomy, I was just about done with this book. How the hell Jen didn’t annul his ass was beyond me. Hence the mouse and doormat analogy.
I did carry on reading and though I mostly enjoyed it with the change of p,aces and new characters, I found it very easy to put down. Took me a few days to get through it.
Nikos is likeable but his constant no in the beginning about Jen being his mate was annoying. Mates are the greatest gift supposedly, but Nikos was prepared to go back to his home without her.
Interesting what happens to Jen and how things are changed up.
Not sure how I feel about the ending with Jen being 55 years of age.
Enjoyed the bits of drama there was story wise and found the fact Jen or Nikos kept alternate shifting, they could not be together in human form at the same time quite humorous.

Awesome story about a unicorn and his human mate

Jen was married to a man who was a crusader, but he died four years ago. She met Nikos, who is a king of a Greek Island, a mythical unicorn shifter, and realize what do the Oracle stone is.

Went retrieving the Oracle Stone, Nikos had to share his unicorn with Jen to save her life. He changed her into a phoenix because she had the DNA in her code. Unfortunately since the Unicorn is moonlight shifter and Phoenix is a sun shifter they couldn't make. Will Jen be able to integrate the Phoenix shifter side with her human side and finally mate with Nikos?

The characters are intriguing, humorous, and relatable. The plot is a fast-paced drama with the edge of your seat descriptive thrilling twists and turns. I love the unusual and magical twist in the story that was totally unexpected finale. But I think there is an another story that could finally complete the four female writers characters hat that is a common thread throughout the series. At least I hope there is another book in the works. I would certainly be intrigued to read Godiva's story. I highly recommend this book.

Jen is a 50 something widow whose life revolved around her husband and his award winning work. Now the bright spots in her life are the meetings with her writers' group and teaching martial arts. Then she meets Nikos who literally sweeps into her life and changes things. Unbeknownst to her, Nikos is a shifter and king of an island of shifters. And she's his mate! Nikos is here to help his friends, Joey and Mikhail, with their problem of an evil dragon who's after an orb. When Jen is kidnapped, things take a shocking turn that rocks the world for both Jen and Nikos.

I'm a huge Zoe Chant fan and this series is one of my favorites. I loved this book and the way Jen slowly came out of her shell. The book's well-written with well-rounded characters, some of whom you'll like and others you won't. Full of mystery and intrigue, this book captured me from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. I was totally entranced and am eager for the next book. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order.

If I had to sum this book up in a single sentence, it would be 'What if Ladyhawk... but with older shifters on a Greek island?' And seriously, the fact that NOBODY else seems to have acknowledged this fact is making me feel very, very old!

That said, it's also a nice instalment in the silver shifters series with a wonderfully competent widowed martial artist as the female lead, and a Greek... I know they describe him as a king in the blurb, but really, given the size of the island he leads, he's more of a mayor... as the male lead.

Whichever Zoe wrote this also had some lovely nuanced-but-not-too-heavy explorations of moving on - in your own time - from grief, not to mention the possibility of recognising that you've lived someone else's dreams and goals instead of your own without anyone being 'the bad guy', and without it invalidating the love you had for them in any way.

I'm almost sad to have reached the last book in the series as my next read, although I do 100% want Godiva to have her HEA as well. So I'm looking forward to picking up Book 4 now.

Nikos and Jen

Very well written, couldn't put it down. Mythical shifters are alive and flourishing. Love is in the air. Nikos is the king of a Greek island and a unicorn shifter, Jen is human and has not come to terms with her husband's death after four years. There are evil shifters trying to steal an oracle stone which results in the powers in the stone transferring to Jen. Nikos revives her after being electrocuted by a blue wolf shifter, bringing dormant DNA forward and she becomes a Phoenix shifter. Back on Nikos Island there is a Gorgon trying to take over. Jen confronts her and circumstances cause her Phoenix to rise and bond with her, allowing her to scare and have the Gorgon leave the island to never return. They are finally able to complete the mate bond.

Very different and exciting!

I loved how this whole story played out. The mate bond is there, but the steamy scenes don't come until much farther in the story. Seeing all the previous characters, as well as meeting Nikos and his crew makes it so much fun. There is quite a bit of action, too! The pace is fast, the tone is upbeat and hopeful and the storyline is character oriented with some action and some steamy scenes near the end. The characters are vibrant and engaging. I can't wait to see Godiva's story! Read these in order and enjoy yourself immensely, especially if you like shifter romances with complex characters and a bit of action!

This is my first Zoe 'Silver' book. As a woman over 40, I needed this. There is still love out there for us. Be it widowed, divorced or just still single, we can find a HEA. Jen would be amazing at any age. Realizing she loved, but had not been in love, was her journey. It lead her to Nikos. From there she learned how to live. Nikos was perfect as middle aged, even though he had lived a lot longer, and a great match for Jen. There was action and romance. A few surprises. And a whole lotta fun. I can't wait to read not only the next book, but also the previous ones. This is my voluntary opinion of an advanced copy I received.

Jen finally gets to live her life with her true love 💘

First off, I enjoy this series so much. Jen and Nikos's love story is full of so many things. Adventure, mystery, fighting, laughter, plenty of mythical shifters for everyone and of course love of mates that grows like no others. This story is so good. I love the martial arts in the story. You can help but love the group of four writers. The twists that are written in this story you never see coming. I cannot say enough good things about this book. Each book in this series is better than the one before it. Read and enjoy the adventure because it is a very good story.

So very enjoyable

Well now, I really enjoyed this book and I feel like I can't really talk about it without giving away Spoilers which I absolutely do not want to do.
The first of the series ( Silver Dragon) was my favourite emotional journey. I love Bird and her pain felt so real, the second (Silver Fox) has my favourite Character....I love Joey. He is absolutely endearing. And this 3rd instalment is my favourite adventure! Jen is great and the story told is so alive you can't help but be drawn in. Zoe introduces us to a host of new shifters in a world that I'm ready to explore again in a heart beat. Cannot wait for the next book!

Brilliant Series

Silver Unicorn (Silver Shifters Book 3) by Zoe Chant. Jen is a widower who lives for the Baker Street Writers Group with her 3 friends, 2 of whom are recently married. Then a friend of her 2 friends husbands arrives and is obviously struck by Jen. Nikos is a Unicorn but Jen is unaware of shifters. During a fight with other shifters Jen is electrocuted and dies. Nikos uses his Unicorn to bring Jen back but unknown to everyone Jen had a distant relative who was a Phoenix and Niko’s Unicorn allows Jen to change to a Phoenix. They fly back to Nikos home where Jen helps to stop an evil shifter from taking over his island.

Nikos comes to town to help Joey and Mikhail in the fight against Cang. Nikos meets Jen and realizes she is his mate. There are obstacles due to a situation on Nikos’ island in Greece and Jen still working to get over her husband’s death.
I really love how this one progressed. Jen and Nikos have all this time to get to know one another due to events reminiscent of The movie Lady Hawke. I don’t want to give anything away because it is in the progression of the story that you fall in love with the book and the characters.

Jen life was always about her husband before his death. Nikos doesn't believe he has time for a mate or that he has one. One evening changes everything. Will Jen accept the world she is thrown into? Will Nikos accept that he has a mate?

Loved, how despite their views, they were thrown together time and again! I didn't blame Nikos for being hesitant to accept the mate bond with everything going on and with the fact that it was new to him. I loved seeing Jen grow into her own and accept that how others did it, didn't mean she had to. Good read!

Really Good Book

Loved the characters. And I did love the storyline in this book as well. There is an overarching plot that started in book one. A lot happened in this book. I am not sure if the storyline is completed, but it was good enough where I did not feel like this was an incomplete story. This book seemed to have two plotlines, that may in fact be related. I am looking forward to the next book to see what else may be in store for us.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Jen lived her life around her husband.
Now she is a widowed, and she never thought she would find love again.
While helping his friend, Nikos also found his mate.
Now what to do ?
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!

Magic is all around if you only look

Loved how Jen came out of her shell with the unexpected appearance of Nikos in her life. Learning that life is more than just what she had with Robert and that there is magic to be found if you allow yourself to be open to it. Especially wanting all her friends to enjoy what she found. Can’t wait to see what is in store for Godiva and to wrap up the end for the “red dragon”

Second chance on romance

Jen had a life traveling around the world with Robert her husband for many years until he died. Two of her friends got mated with shifters.
