Both a delectable delicacy and an overwhelming feast for the senses and the intellect, Creatures Set Forth is strange, wandering, and spell-binding. I read and reviewed this as an ebook, but I must order a print copy now, for this sort of magic begs to be held in the hands. There are many stories, one great story, and no story at all. A tender and indefinable work of art and language that may well leave you stranded in a fairy circle you have no desire to leave. "Dictionaries" broke my heart, and "Another Complaint" saved me. Not for the faint of heart or meagre of spirit.

Whimsical, poetic, absurd, metaphorical, profound: all words that came to mind as I read through this collection of mini-tales and enjoyed the accompanying illustrations, yet none of these words truly capture the outlandish charm at work here. Every small tale is a gem in itself. Some are combined to form loose stories, others are delightful stand alone pieces. I really don't have the words to adequately describe the genius at work here. The combination of word choice, unparalleled imagination, unexpected yet just right structure and form of the writing checks every possible box for me. And the delightfully endearing drawings are the icing on top of the cake. I don't know where this wondrous world is, but I would love to go live there. Need a break from the everyday and often serious business of life? I recommend diving into this book for an escape into a daringly beautiful, original, creative and unique artistic vision. [Technical note for ebook users: At the time of this review, the formatting of the ebook was not compatible with my traditional Kindle but I was able to read it without problem on my tablet and phone.]

"There's all sorts of curious out there. And then there's the curious you get at the end of a long day and the slow start of a long journey."

Creatures Set Forth is a magical journey of words and images, thoughts and truths, and whimsical and wonderful, wonderful illustrations. It's a window into the incredible, tiny but massive, world of the Creatures of the Thicket.

I find it hard to put to words the magic of the Creatures, and their exceptional storyteller, but perhaps if I tell you, this is a book I wish for a hard copy...I want my small children and grandchildren on my knee, I want them with their heads on my shoulder, and I want them travelling with me to imagine the comings and goings of the Creatures. It is a book to spark imaginations, young and old. I love the Creatures of the Thicket and so happy to have met them.
