A unique mix-and-match book that generates thousands of ideas for tackling a blank sketchbook page
Designed to kickstart creativity for artists and hobbyists, the pages of this book are divided into three separate sections that can be flipped, mixed, and matched to generate more than 100,000 unique sketchbook prompts! Jennifer Orkin Lewis, author of Draw Every Day, Draw Every Way and 100 Days of Drawing , has gained a dedicated following on Instagram by posting her daily sketches. The Sketchbook Idea Generator begins with an introductory section, in which Jennifer provides examples of her work as well as insight into her process of interpreting a prompt. The rest of the book consists of pages that are sliced into three mix-and-match sections that represent the three essential elements of a good drawing medium, color, and subject. With those basic decisions made, you can get right down to it!
Jennifer Orkin Lewis is a freelance illustrator and textile designer who paints for 30 minutes every day in her sketchbook and posts the results on Instagram (@augustwren). Her clients include Kate Spade, Anthropologie, Flow Magazine, and teNeues. She lives in Irvington, New York.
A fun, clever idea! I enjoy the three divided pages throughout (with a small but VERY helpful section about style & technique at page 146). I liked a lot of the combos that came up randomly, but I preferred using a Choose Your Own Adventure style, flipping through each of the three sections until I found one I liked, and then mixing and matching the other two selections. I’ll probably be using this clever book for a long time!!
Format: Hardback. It makes no sense to create or read this on Kindle.
This book is really fun. It reminds me of Usborne's mix and match books. The pages are split into three sections and you can mix and match 3 different categories; techniques/medians, colors, and prompts/subjects. I didn't really try out the techniques, but it was fun drawing the prompts with the colors dictated. I got this from the library to try out. I think buying this book would be worth it.
A Bible for anyone who finds themselves artistically "stuck". The creative possibilities generated by this book will easily span any aspiring artist's lifetime!
