Of all the titles which have been designated for the envoys of the Son of God, that of “shepherd” is the most popular, the most beautiful, and the most ample. Bishop, presbyter, preacher, priest, clergyman, rector, parson, minister—all of these have been long, and are still, in use, but not one of them is so satisfying or sufficient as “shepherd.”If we are called to fulfill Christ’s mission, then our work is that of a shepherd. If we are to be judged by Christ, then the standard of the judgment day is to be the standard of a shepherd. Since Christ is the image of his Father, it follows that God himself is a shepherd God. To glorify him we must do a shepherd’s work, and to enjoy him forever we must have the shepherd heart.Based on a series of lectures delivered in 1912, this work by Jefferson is considered his finest and offers timely wisdom for the church today. Every pastor should read this book on how to model the ministry of pastoral leadership according to the Bible.
Though originally penned in 1912, Charles Jefferson's observations on pastoral life and ministry are so relevant and informed that they feel as if they could have been written yesterday. Though two millennia have passed since our Lord left this earth, the trials and struggles, temptations and dangers, work and reward of the humble shepherd of the flock have not changed as much as we might think. This book is a refocusing upon the essence of pastoral ministry which exposes all false views as harmful and unfaithful to the Chief Shepherd.
While reading this short book I repeatedly thought, "Who is this guy?" His approach to pastoral ministry is so thoroughly Biblical and so unlike so many other pastors whose ministries I am familiar with. Then, after completing the book, I then noticed that it sprang from a series of lectures delivered in 1912! Of course! His approach to pastoral ministry predates the church growth model of pragmatism and market driven principles. This is a book for men in the ministry who are serious about serving the Great Shepherd the way shepherding is supposed to be done!
This book has become indispensable to me in informing me and shaping my character and behavior as a pastor. It is just as relevant, life-changing, and important to me as it has been the last three times that I have read it over the last 20 years!
Every person looking to be a part of church leadership should read this book. Jefferson communicated truths poignantly. He grasps the heart of ministering to people.
Wonderful book!! This book was very encouraging and also convicted me about how God wants me to pastor! This book is highly recommended and emphasizes the need for God honoring pastors!
