I picked this up not expecting anything special, the precis seemed corny and tough ex-cops taking on the might of the establishment aren't exactly thin on the ground in paperback literature. But actually I soon got into it and found myself really enjoying it. The author has a good writing style, the characters are entertaining, some of the dialogue is very funny, and the plot was pretty good too. Inevitably there are a few corny/generic thriller bits (when a main plot character goes down in a minisub in a tense situation, it's just so obviously going to go horribly wrong but somehow all come right after the compulsory cliff-hanger moments, etc etc, that it's almost tedious, sorry that's not meant to be a spoiler, trust me it doesn't affect the outcome!), but not enough to detract from what overall is a highly enjoyable and very entertaining thriller. If you're wanting a good holiday/longhaul flight book I'd recommend it highly.

My first Carsten Stroud book, so didn't know what to expect.
Way to much descriptive text, it distracts from the story and doesn't add anything.
A moderately interesting plot involving Cuba/U.S. dynamic.
A lot comes together at the end, with a few crumbs dropped along the way.

I got to the end of this book but it wasn't easy. too many names, too many ideas plucked out of thin air by the hero's. lucky it was a rainy day when I started it or else I possibly wouldn't have continued.
