What is better than a wonderful collection of stories by some of the best know authors of historical romanc? You are right, not a lot and endless hours of reading about rogue's that fall helplessly in love! These were all previously published books by each author.
The Secret of My Seduction by Caroline Linden - Sometimes a wish can become reality and for Bathsheba Crawford it looks like it might! A secret writer of scandalous books, she wants to experience a passionate love to help in her writing. Then she meets Liam and makes him a proposistion. Can they find love?
Stealing the Rogue's Heart by Erica Monroe - A somewhat darker romance that pulled out all the stops and emotions. Mina Mason met Charlie Thatcher when they were young and she knew he was the one for her. Unfortunately he is part of a rival gang than her brother but she does spend time with him at the tavern he bartends at. Unfortuantely Mina gets in trouble one night and he has to defend her against one of his gang. Oh my, what will happen? A dark, steamy romance that pulls at all the heartstrings in the famous Erica Monroe style!
The Pirate's Debt by Katherine Bone - Lady Chloe is a hopeless romantic who has a hugh infatuation for a pirate, the infamous Black Regent. To say this is an adventure you will enjoy taking is to say it mildly. Katherine Bone takes you on a journey or romance, danger and adventure that leads Chloe to Basil Halfor, Earl of Marwick who is posing as The Black Regent. Prepare to be enchanted from the first page!
That Miscreant Marquess by Aileen Fish - All she wanted was a kiss, but that was just asking too much of Colin, the Marquess of Markam. He has been burned badly so tries to stay away from those attractive ladies who may try to reel him in for his title. But Mattie is determined in her pursuit, although he avoids her at every turn. But could this be the one as she seems to be breaking through to his heart? Great story!
Adeline by Christina McKnight - A wonderful Beauty and the Beast tale that just drew me in from the beginning. This is my favorite trope and this author did it so well!! Jasper, Earl of Ailebury is truly a tortured soul who needs redemption. Badly burned from trying to save his parents in a fire. Adeline was a beautiful woman, but definitely not perfect and hiding a lot herself. As these two come together by fate it would seen, could this grow into a romance? Such a wonderful romance with a lot of emotion and heartwarming characters.
A Lady Hoyden's Secret by Dawn Brower - All Lady Helena wanted was to be independent and to do that she had to earn some money. She becomes Lady X and writes a scandal sheet and is determined to get Lord Oliver back for a happening at a ball years ago. But when he is plagues by rumors and innendo from that scandal sheet, he decides to prove Lady X wrong. Of course he comes in contact with Helena, but does not realize she is the writer. As they see each other the sparks fly but can they ever be together if he finds out about who she is? Loved this story.
Rhapsody and Rebellion by Aubrey Wynne - A great story that stirs the heart! Gideon takes his mother back to her homeland in Scotland and although he loves the land, he is an English Earl. His cousin has been killed who had been married to Alisabeth. There is unrest there and he finds himself attracted to Lissie, who is really a fiesty lady! I really enjoyed this story filled with the unrest in Scotland at that time in history, humor and a romance that will make you sigh!
Love Only Me by Amanda Mariel - Lady Narissa can be a lady by day but runs a secret gaming hell for females. Oh yes. Seth, Duke of Blackmore just wants to get his fiesty sister wed properly but when he follows her into Narissa's establishment, he never expected to find a strong attraction! They come into contact and the chemisty is really wonderful! Love this author's stories.
His Wicked Embrace by Lauren Smith - A heartwarming story that has a notorious rogue saving a woman when she is being auctioned off at a brothel. Zehra had been caught in a nightmare since she had been taken from her home in Persia. As he feels protective of her and she trusts him, it seems they both risk their hearts. Loved these two characters and they had a wonderful journey to love.

Book 1: The Secret of My Seduction by Caroline Linden: I adored that this book had a heroine who wasn’t a gorgeous debutante, as many of the heroines in Regency tend to be. She describes herself as plain and dresses the part so she can skulk around the grand ballrooms and parties of the ton to use as fodder for her wildly successful, risque, anonymously published adventures of Lady X. She has an indecent proposal for her publisher: She would like for them to have several assignations so that she might have more detail to write about for her books! Will he accept? If he does, can they keep their pleasure strictly business? A deliciously wicked, steamy read!

Book 2: Stealing the Rogues Heart by Erica Monroe: Definitely a different sort of post-Regency, pre-Victorian historical romance. There's a little bit of a Romeo and Juliet feeling to this story. Mina is the sister to one of London's biggest crime lords. She has been friends with Charlie growing up, but he joined a rival gang after they saved his life. When his gang threatens Mina, it now comes down to choosing her or them, with danger to his heart for the former and danger to them both of them for the latter. The author uses a lot of what I would imagine to be old-time Cockney slang, though some of it seems familiar. Fortunately, she does have a glossary at the beginning of the book. I felt like I needed to print it out, though, so I could understand all the strange words and phrases.

Book 3: The Pirate’s Death by Katherine Bone: If you enjoy honorable pirates, you will most likely find this a rollicking good read. Our heroine, Chloe, is a hopeless romantic who enjoys Gothic novels and who decides to pursue the man that she loves after he fights in a duel, the Earl of Markwick. She is quite bold, as she knows she will have to travel to do so. The Earl of Markwick is plagued by his father’s dishonorable deeds and feels he must make amends. So he decides to become the next Black Regent pirate. His first task is to track down Lady Chloe, who is—of course—trying to track him down. The author does a fantastic job with characterization. Chloe is so determined; her strength and conviction surprise the hero. The characters and the situation she gets them into make this a cracking good read.

Book 4: That Miscreant Marquess by Eileen Fish: Mattie has always been attracted to the Marquess of Markham. She's good friends with his sister, but she knows he has a scandalous reputation. After losing a wager amongst her girlfriends about who would be the first to steal a kiss from one of the marquess’s circle of friends, Mattie is still determined that she would steal a kiss from the marquess but will then accept a more suitable husband. Colin, the marquess, has no desire to be caught by any lady, and especially by Mattie, as he overhears her parents discussing a match between them. This is a very short novella, and as such, has some issues typical of that short form. The very beginning of the story was a fairly long information dump about Mattie herself, the previous wager, and the relationship between Mattie and the marquess’s family. I think this would have been a more interesting story if the entire plot had been fleshed out more and the previous wager had been shown, not told. There were some unusual issues with word choices, like saying that a brow furled rather than furrowed.

Book 5: Adeline by Christina McNight: This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Jasper lost his family in a terrible fire in which he was scarred. Adeline is a fiery beauty who has a hard time acting as properly as she should, though she has improved from when she was a young girl. Jasper has kept himself hidden away in his manor house since the age of twelve. Both the main characters have a history of loneliness. Adeline was sent away to boarding school at the age of 12 because her parents couldn't manage her. Jasper not only lives alone with his servants, but the people of his earldom appear to ostracize him and have nicknamed him the Beast of Faversham. This very well done book explores the themes we are familiar with from Beauty and the Beast. Jasper is definitely the wounded hero who at times is almost childlike in his desire for approval and the way he lashes out if he doesn't get it (or doesn't think he gets it). He is a good and honorable man, which is something that Adeline sees. They are in ways complementary to each other, as Adeline's liveliness and acceptance bring him out of his shell.

Book 6: A Lady Hoyden’s Secret by Dawn Brower: Lady Helena, the daughter of a duke, is determined to remain unwed. She wants to be independent, and she's set out to earn money by writing a scandal sheet so she can live apart from her parents before she receives her full inheritance at the age of 30. Her brother's best friend, the Marquess of Dashville, Lord Oliver Hunt was rude to her at a ball in her third season, so he became the first fodder for her new gossip column. Five years later, Oliver has often been the subject of scrutiny for Lady X. He's decided to mend his ways and believes that the first person he needs to make amends to is Lady Helena for the way he treated her in the past. This book has some unusual problems with language. There are often words and phrases that just jolted me out the Regency period, like when Lady Helena said that she was “in full spinster mode these days,” or when something was described as “a mess of something.” More annoyingly, the dialogue uses a lot of contractions. Authors of Regency and other historical fiction tend to stay away from contractions as doing so leads to more formal speech like we often see with actual Regency authors themselves, like Jane Austen. It was disturbing to read every possible word combination that could be a contraction made to be so. One short paragraph had five! It just didn't feel Regency. The plot feels weak and the characterization unbelievable, as Dashville fell in love with Helena instantly when they met five years after the previous ball incident even though he was utterly indifferent to her before.

Book 7: Rhapsody and Rebellion by Audrey Wynne: After his father's death and the death of his cousin Ian, Gideon and his mother return to her ancestral home in the Highlands of Scotland. The newly minted earl knows that his mother needs this, and he is happy to see the Scottish side of the family again. Lissie was Ian's wife. Ian was killed during mob violence while protecting a child. Lucy's barely into her mourning period, so she feels a little guilty with her attraction to her husband's handsome cousin. Gideon feels the same, but they have not only an attraction but an easy way with each other that leads to genuine care for each other and a growing affection. It was so easy to get caught up in this story. One couldn't help but feel for Lucy as a new widow who is unsure of her future. I enjoyed watching Gideon come to appreciate the Scottish part of his heritage a little more. This series has a little bit to do with magic as well, so that was fun, too. The author managed not only to have conflict with the budding feelings of the hero and heroine but also more external conflict given the history of Scotland at the time the book is meant to take place. At times, I felt there was a little bit too much of an information dump, but the author did a good job of really setting this book in time and place.

Book 8: Love Only Me by Amanda Mariel: Narissa is not like the ladies of the ton. She likes to horse race, drink Scotch, and run a gaming hell. She has no wish to marry as she does not want to curtail her activities. Seth, a duke, meets her in the opening scene in the book when she thoroughly trounces his horse in a race. He asks her to ride for him in a big upcoming race, but she refuses him even when he offers to pay her a large sum of money. Various occasions bring them together, especially when his sister gets pulled into Narissa's web. These two characters are so different from most historical romances that I read. They are both somewhat prickly characters. But this was delicious, watching them fight and interact. Often, it was reminiscent of school children bickering but on adult topics. On perhaps a different day I might have found them annoying, but on the day that I read this book, I went along for the ride and found myself to be quite amused.

Book 9: His Wicked Embrace by Lauren Smith: We meet Zehra, a Persian princess as she is about to be auctioned off at an English brothel. Her parents were murdered in Persia, but she was able to escape, only to be caught by slave traders who brought her to England for sale. At the auction, an Englishman paid 7000 pounds for her. He was only meant to observe the auction, waiting for his brother and the Bow Street Runners to put an end to the auction. When the young woman went up for sale, he wanted to protect her. I absolutely adored Lawrence as a hero. He definitely has a history of a rogue, but he has standards for the women he beds. He becomes protective of Zehra very quickly and even starts to have some tender feelings. This book was much too short for the kind of story that these characters and their background needed. There wasn't enough time to properly develop the romance between the hero and heroine or for the real and present danger of a man from her past to be fully realized. Both Zara’s and Lawrence’s characters do garner sympathy and empathy as good people in trying circumstances. I just felt like there needed to be more depth to the story.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

When a Rogue Falls - This collection consists of the previously published stories from nine authors. All are new to me, except for Aubrey Wynne; her book is the reason why I chose this collection. Although I have a couple of collections with these authors’ books, I never was interested in reading their books. The review conditions required that I read all the books. I received an Epub file, which made my reading experience a nightmare, until I found Calibre. Some of these books came with an overview, which I appreciate knowing what the story is about before I read it.

This will be the last collection of these authors that I will review/read. The dialog is too modern for the times, which spoils the reading for me, along with the amateur ways used to show the woman in question is independent. A bit simplistic and Hollywood in the styles, too. I will stick with Ms. Wynne, except for her Legacy Series since books two and three were unsatisfactory.

Every one of these books needs editing. What is the deal with using lowercase for titles and names (so common nowadays) – disrespect and intolerance? Doesn’t anyone know the difference between woman and women (or man vs. men), singular vs. plural, or possessive vs. plural? Authors, may I recommend Dame Barbara Cartland for reference material; not an author I cared to read even in childhood, but she knew her stuff. In case this matters to some, she’s the step-grandmother to Princess Di. 3*

Caroline Linden, The Secret of My Seduction – I was unable to finish this story. It had a good beginning and the characters were interesting, but once the sex started I became bored and quit reading. 3*

Erica Monroe, Stealing the Rogue's Heart – There is a glossary of older terms that are not all commonly used today. I liked the storylines, the characters and dialog. Although there was a little bit of today’s theme of men not telling her what to do, the story is actually realistic. There is some vulgar language and I skipped the sex scenes. 4*

Katherine Bone, The Pirate's Debt – I could not get into this story. I felt like I missed a previous book and what I was reading confused me. 3*

Aileen Fish, That Miscreant Marquess – This is a nice, clean, simplistic story with good characters. The storylines were OK, but the romance bit from his end happened on the next page after he said he wasn’t interested in her. That didn’t flow smoothly with all the denials and wham love, and her acting like he belonged to her at a certain point. 3*

Christina McKnight, Adeline – I found this to be an interesting and intriguing version of Beauty and the Beast, and enjoyable reading. The storylines are interesting and the support characters are my type of conspirators and caring people. The two main characters, both damaged in their own way, kept me immersed in the pages, even though there were some silly thoughts. Good descriptions. Good dialog, considering, but still too modern as with the servants’ behaviors. 4*

Dawn Brower, A Lady Hoyden's Secret – I was interesting in where the story was going but with chapter two when the switch flipped I started getting bored with the same old formula. Then a bit later, same chapter, the vulgar language began with the fantasies. There was not enough story to get me interested in these characters, nor did I feel any sexual tension between them; just sneakiness. He ignores her for decades and now he’s hot for her; yeah, right; maybe further into the story. 2*

Aubrey Wynne, Rhapsody and Rebellion #3 - I enjoy the stories by Ms. Wynne, but this one is just OK. Good storylines well told but the dialog is not authentic. This is a quickly read romance set in England during the early 1800s. The characters are good and likeable, well almost all of them, and there's plenty of love and caring mixed with a touch of suspense. This story is not on the same level as some of her previous books. Some research would have helped this story immensely, and the author would have learned that God and the Bible were important to these characters and would not have used lowercase as is so popular nowadays with the “modern” folk. I contacted the author to review her books and received this copy through Booksprout. Needs minor editing. 3*

Amanda Mariel, Love Only Me – There seems to be lots of confusion for this author concerning possessive vs. plural, to the point of annoyance for the reader. BUT … this is an interesting story with good characters and good dialog, better than the rest. Although I skimmed, I did finish this one. 4*

Lauren Smith, His Wicked Embrace – Did not make it far into the story before boredom set in. There was nothing that interested me about the characters or the storylines. 3*

I found this book on Booksprout. 3*

This nine-book collection was filled with drama, amazing storylines and charming romances with a touch of magic in each one. I have reviewed two of these stories and they are below, but I wanted to do one for a new author for me Aileen Fish.
That Miscreant Marquess - Aileen Fish
Lady Matilda Franklin loses a wager starts the story out yet is it so bad because now her Markham is not off limits anymore. This quick read was such fun love the ladies Lavinia, Selena, Clara, and Charlotte. We get not just one wedding enjoy, but who will be the next one? Aileen Fish is new to me, but I really enjoyed this one.

Love Only Me - Amanda Mariel
Another strong female character graces this charming story. Narissa is a take no name lady. She does not care what the Ton thinks about her running a gaming parlor or horse racing. Seth another strong character who watches her race then is truly unhappy that she won. Then he turns around and wants her to ride his horse. Seth is a bit of scoundrel. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It is well written with unusual characters, great storylines plus the characters take interesting paths in their life. It makes for an interesting and engaging story. I am so glad I have this one. I am looking forward to reading other works by this author.

A Lady Hoyden’s Secret - Dawn Brower
Oh, the life of a wallflower scandal writer is never easy. In this book, you will meet Lady X and let me tell you I admire this hoyden. For me, everything in this book was exceptional the characters, the storyline and the first-rate interaction between the two main characters. This was a clever and solid piece of writing.
This is just a sample of what you have waiting for you if you pick up this collection because there are six other fabulous stories waiting for you. Thanks to Booksprout and Amanda Mariel offering the arc. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

An excellent historical novella collection.

Caroline Linden, Christina McKnight, Amanda Mariel and plenty more.

I was partial to Amanda Mariel’s
Love Only Me.

Lady Narissa Goodwin is a jockey. An unconventional hoyden (the best kind) on horseback. When she beats Seth Blakey, the Duke of Blackmore’s horse Highflier in a race, he propositions her. Ride his horse at Epsom. She declines but it’s the start of their competition with horses and wits.
Her dream is to ride her horse Merlin at Epsom. Can she have her dream and get the duke as well?

Recommend.

Enchanting rogues

These stories may not follow the classic Victorian tales but they are appealing, mysterious, intriguing, passionate love stories in their own right. The heros and heroines are witty, daring, sensuous, proud and willing to defy the constraining rules of society to achieve true love and happiness. Thumbs up!

This is an enjoyable collection of historic romances. There is drama, danger, risk, and romance. There is some hot sex, too, so if you like clean romances, this might not be the set for you. Otherwise, pick this one up and enjoy.
