There’s an age-old tale that magic unicorns exist . . . wandering where orchids grow within the mountain mist.
Legend has it that the only way to find a unicorn is to know where to look and how to craft a beautiful gift that shows her you are a friend. If you’re lucky, she may even take you for a ride! So, gather some natural craft supplies like daisies, vines, ferns, apples, and grass, and get ready to find a magical new friend. If your heart is pure, you just might discover a unicorn in the wild. By being resourceful, careful, and kind, you can make beautiful riding gear from nature that will show your unicorn friend you truly care—and you may even be taken on an incredible ride through sunny meadows, over sparkling oceans, and along the brilliant arcs of rainbows!
Sue Fliess’s poetic read-aloud text and Simona Sanfilippo’s vibrant, whimsical illustrations will provide much fun for young readers eager to find their own unicorn friends! Also included are guides for teachers and parents about how to engage children in building unicorn-riding gear, how to interest them in the natural world, and a brief history of unicorns.

This book was beautiful, and so much fun. It tells you how to find unicorns, as the name suggests, and kept the interest of my unicorn obsessed little girl. My son loved the bright pictures, too.
I loved reading this book to my littles. There was unicorn lore, instructions to make a daisy chain, and tips for a nature hike in the back of the book, and I really liked that!
This book is cute, whimsical, and a lot of fun! Perfect for toddlers, especially ones that love unicorns.
In this book, the point is to not just FIND a unicorn but to trick this exquiste creature of legend... trick her into giving you a ride.
Regarding this Goodreader, I my sense of wonder is immense and even sacred. I've loved evocative writing by J.K. Rowling, J.R.R Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis, among others. Loved, loved, was spiritually moved, felt gratitude.
Reading this story, however, I feel nothing but disgust. These children don't aim to FIND a unicorn, and pause in wonder, awe, and respect. No, what they do in this story... reads to me more like a physical assault.
What happens toward the end? That reminds me of saying that a rape victim enjoyed herself.
Of course, everybody doesn't share my values. Therefore, I'm nowhere close to the intended audience for this book. On behalf of that readership, I'll give this book FIVE STARS.
This was beautifully written in flowing verse. I love the whimsical, sparkly, breezy illustrations, as well. And you know I'm a big unicorn fan! ;) The text has a nice message, which is supported by the backmatter listing unicorns' immensely positive mythical characteristics. That's exactly what I love about unicorns. Their positive vibes! "Unicorns are secretive and very hard to find/but they can sense if you are friendly, welcoming, and kind" I also like the angle the author has taken with exploring nature and using items found in nature to make things (like the daisy-chain bridle with "ivy vine" reigns). Clever, fun, and sure to inspire outdoor activities full of imagination!
How to Find a Unicorn by Sue Fliess, follows a diverse group of children and they go hunting for the mysterious creature! Romping through the forest, they build and create saddles, reins, and daisy chains to entice the unicorn out of hiding. Fliess, a master of rhyme, uses eloquent and surprising vocabulary, balancing learning and read-aloud ability perfectly. Art, by Simona Sanfilippo, is so child friendly and sweet. Brilliant!
Sue is a master poet, and I just love her whimsical rhyming text. This is the most recent addition to her Magical Creatures and Crafts collection, and (like the others!) it beautifully captures the childhood dream of encountering one of those fabled beings. After all, what child hasn't imagined the ways they might trap a leprechaun or lure a unicorn? I would highly recommend checking this out at your library or buying it for your own collection.
This was an adorable book that kids wil just love. Each of Fliess' How To...books are so creative and fun. They engage you, with their rhyming text and colorful vibrant illustrations.
This one showed you how to find the most elusive creature, the unicorn. You had to craft a special gift to show it you were a friend. The kids in this book were creative, and worked well together. A great book for children who love fantasy or unicorns.
HOW TO FIND A UNICORN by Sue Fliess and Simona Sanfilippo will have you believing in unicorns, if you didn't already. The cadence of Fliess' rhymed text and the palette of Sanfilippo's illustrations combine to create this magical read that will have young readers making daisy chains and looking for shooting stars. And the world can always use a little more magic, right?
This book was a little long for a last book in a preschool storytime, but I liked using it because it led nicely into our daisy chain craft. Most people seemed to enjoy the book - the rhyme moves it along, and the idea that kindness, gentleness and friendliness are how to connect with a unicorn is a nice one - definitely subverting the "use a virgin to murder a unicorn" story.
Fantasy at its finest for the littlest readers! Rhyming text that spins a tale kids will love about unicorns, friendship, patience, and fun. Added bonus: back matter about the joys of hiking and making your own daisy chain.
This misty, magical instruction book for finding a unicorn will be a big hit with unicorn-lovers everywhere. Grab your sugar cubes, make a daisy-chain bridle, and let your imagination run wild with this book!
Lovely rhyming picture book, that explains to a group of children how to find a unicorn and go on an adventure. The artwork is terrific, and the book comes with a few pages of backmatter, including details about unicorn lore in history, nature hikes, and a flower chain making activity.
This colorful, rhyming adventure follows a diverse group of friends as they look for a unicorn. Bonus features include a brief history of unicorns, instructions on how to make a flower chain, and suggestions on how to go on your own outdoor adventure.
This quiet lyrical rhyming book about how to catch a unicorn is fun and uses matter with information about why people have believed in unicorns throughout the ages and what the meaning is of this winged creature representing loyalty, purity, perfection, and goodness.
Charming story of this friend group locating a unicorn by setting a "trap" of their favorite things. The unicorn enjoys playing with them for the day. By setting the unicorn free, they hope it will return. Lovely illustrations capture the joy.
Sue Fliess continues to wow with her Magical Creatures and Crafts series. Kids will delight in Sanfilippo's delightful details on every page. A true unicorn among unicorn books!!!
Kids who love unicorns will love this enchanting rhyming tale of a magical unicorn encounter. At the end--a bonus! A little unicorn history and fun instructions about how to make a daisy chain.
What a lovely, magical, lyrical story with fabulous backmatter. Children will want to read this over and over again, hoping they too, will spy a unicorn!
