*Please be aware Hot Ride originally appeared in the Heart2Heart Charity Anthology, Vol 1, under a different title.*
When phone-sex operator Azrael gets into Travis's Uber, the driver profile claims Travis is deaf. Thank goodness, right? Otherwise, the guy would hear Az's dirty talk which would be all kinds of humiliating considering Az is actually a virgin who doesn't even know if he's doing phone job properly.
But Travis isn't deaf. He's standing in for someone else and hears every single word of Az's raunchy call. So when they're randomly set up on a blind date together, the sparks fly from the very first moment they meet. What follows is a steamy connection in which Azrael and Travis realize they have more in common than they originally thought despite Az's strict family and Travis's ten year age difference.
This 17k word short is full of awkward blind date moments, first-time you-know-what, interfering family, and sweet, sweet dance moves.
I write M/M romance with humor, heart, and heat. Check out my backlist here on GR for a selection of series and standalone or visit www.LucyLennox.com!
I only keep a small list of my very favorite books and series in my bookshelf here. I read A LOT and it's hard to keep the list updated!
This is such a fine example that some authors are perfectly able to create a whole love story on less than a hundred pages.
*previously published in one of the Heart2Heart anthologies.
🔹 a dirty mouthed phone sex operator 🔹 who’s still a virgin (but wants to rectify that status)
🔸 a supposedly deaf Uber driver 🔸 who’s not hearing impaired at all
♥️ an anonymously set up Valentine’s Day’s date ♥️ with two men who aren’t strangers at all
But there is SOOOO much more to this story and the plot twist made me all giddy, even if it all was pretty coincidental to make it fit a short. Theirs was such a wholesome and beautiful love story, at one point I even put my headphones on, listened to the same music they were and it all just made me so happy at that moment.
It was so sweet, I LOVED IT!! And it was hot ofc, I mean it’s Lucy Lennox, right? Totally recommended. ♡
3.75⭐ and I'll round it up because Azrael was adorable, but the novella itself is short and leaves you wanting for more, so for me - not very satisfying.
But... Azrael.❤️
🟣 Ballet dancers 🔵 Virgin, coming out 🟢 Both MMCs gay 🟡 Age gap - 10 years 🔴 Some homophobia 🌶️ Spice good, taking virginity; t/b
This was a short, sweet story about Azrael, who's a dancer, he's almost 25 years old and lives a very closeted life of the son of a conservative senator, until he dares to finally go on a date with a guy and meets Travis, the Uber driver who's supposedly deaf, but was only substituting for his deaf brother when he took Azrael home a few days ago.
“I’m sick and tired of being a virgin! I just want to get fucked. Is that too much to ask? I’m almost twenty- five for god’s sake, Travis. That’s why I signed up for the app in the first place. I just want to get laid!”
After hanging out they finally decide to hook up and then both want to explore their feelings, especially Travis, who's been drowning in his career for the past decade and he really, really likes Azrael.
That part of Azrael having a side job as a phone sex worker was almost pointless, the dancing and living authentically was the material point in this novella.
I really wanted just a little bit more of that relationship development, there also could've been a lot more added to that epilogue, especially about their relationship, maybe of a time a couple of years in the future.
I liked both main characters and their sweet intimacy, this is a classical Lucy Lennox feel good story and I personally wonder if Brody has his own book? I'd like to read about Brody, the deaf twin.
Audio: 5 stars, Michael Dean and Lucy Lennox are a great pairing (as long as no older ladies are involved) hahaa!
Book: 2.5-3 stars
Short, sweet, and steamy. Nothing too mind blowing but for a book less than 100 pages, it had me smiling the whole time! I wish there was a book for Travis’s brother Brody!
DNF at 78% Ehhhhh….like you’re having a what you think is a one night stand but there’s a lot of teary eyes and sweetheart and honey and baby and the baby wasn’t even said in a sexy context. No. I think it was all supposed to be sweet and show them “connecting” but it did not work for me. The main character was a phone sex operator to make extra money on the side, who grew up going to country clubs with his Senator father but he acted nervous and insecure and like he could barely get a word out in normal conversation which didn’t seem consistent with the character type.
A delightful short story from Lucy Lennox. Travis is filling in for his brother, an Uber driver. His customer, Azreal, gets in for the ride while having phone sex. It’s dirty and hot, and he doesn’t tell Azreal that he can hear him. After all, it’s his brother’s Uber, and he’s deaf, which the sign says. Then they meet again, and we know Azreal, 25, teaches dance, but he’s also a virgin. Travis is a theatre dance director, 35, and quite taken with Azreal. They get to see each other more, and super sexily get rid of the virginity. And there is much more to this marvelous romance ! ENJOY !
I'm so glad that I found this one on KU. I remember reading it from the anthology around two years ago when I borrowed it from a friend, and it stood out to me 😍 I was looking for something short since I've been in a reading slump, and my gosh! It's as good as the first time.
It's the perfect mix of sweet, naughty, and sexy with a dash of an adorable awkward character, and perfect for what I needed. It's somewhat hard to rate novellas in general since there is not enough time to get to know the characters. It's a novella, after all, so I get it, but this one land a 4.5 just wished it was a little longer.
I highly recommend it if you're looking for something to get you back to reading. Lennox is really good at giving us a sweet & sexy story with all the feels bundled up.
This was a super cute novella! I actually can’t believe I haven’t read it before now. Travis and Azrael were so cute together. Both in the dance community, I love how they came together as individuals first before they started working together.
And Travis and Brody?! I love that dynamic. I’ve always wanted to learn ASL myself but my course was cancelled in University and I had to take Spanish instead. 😂
What Lucy Lennox can do with a novella is amazing. This is short, sweet, insta-love goodness. And of course it has LL’s famous sexy scenes. I couldn’t ask for anything more. No cheating, no drama, no angst, and a HEA.
4.5 This novella was the best surprise!! In less than 100 pages it gave me everything i wanted to distract myself from everyday life. It made me laugh, it made me sweat 🥵🔥 and it leave me with a stupid smile on my lips. I don't know why I haven't read anything from Lucy Lennox before but now I'm gonna definitely stalk her 😂😌
This short story is part of the heart2heart anthology and I have to say, as part of the anthology is really good, by his own? Not so much. I read it before I knew it was part of h2h and wasn't impress at all. But later on, when I read the anthology I found it to be endearing, compared to the other stories.
Cute story. I liked both Azrael and Travis. To repeat what another review says, a few too many coincidences to be realistic. Even so, it's an entertaining quick read.
Looking over the shoulder of a man driving. Nothing noteworthy or exciting about this cover other than the fact that it’s written by Lucy Lennox.
What happens when a phone sex operator (Azreal), who has never had sex before, climbs into the back of an Uber while on a call? What happens when the Uber driver, who is supposed to be deaf but is actually the hearing-abled twin brother filling in (Travis), gets an earful? HOT RIDE is a fun little story about a closeted gay virgin making ends meet in ways he’d rather not and the man who gave the “kid” a ride. Travis can’t get the shy phone sex fare out of his head & is even more surprised when they meet once again when a hookup app matches them for a date! Sweet, funny, hot, and entertaining. This short story packs in just enough content to feel full but with the most lovable characters that readers will be chanting “Encore” for. My hope is that eventually these men will be given a revised and expanded story. . Almost 10 year age gap. Wish we would have saw more of Brody (Travis’s twin).
I borrowed this because I saw it was leaving KU. This was mostly cute and steamy, but there were definitely some emotional moments with Az coming out to his family finally, all his emotions regarding pursuing dancing despite what his family wanted, etc. Az’s sister Leora kind of pissed me off at one point when she asked if he’d quit dancing and go to law school to appease their parents for her wedding, but she was very supportive in the epilogue. The ending brought it full circle from the beginning and made me laugh.
I would have liked to delve into Travis’s character a bit more. Like how he came to be the artistic director for the company, see more of his relationship with Brody, met his dad, etc. We found out Travis was bisexual about halfway through the book, but we never really knew if he preferred men over women, was an equal opportunity lover, etc. Az we knew hadn’t been with anyone since he was trying to lose his virginity by joining the app, but we knew he was gay from almost the beginning of the book.
There was an almost 10 year age gap, but it never stated how old Travis really was. We just knew Az was 24 and about to have a birthday. Also it moved pretty quickly from instalust to instalove. Baby and sweetheart nicknames were thrown out quickly, and in the epilogue it hadn’t been 2 months and they were moving in together. I enjoyed this overall though and it was a quick read for an afternoon. 3.5 out of 5 stars, but I’ll round up.
Travis James (TJ) Kane: twin brother is deaf, cousins with Az’s sister’s fiancé Carlton, artistic director for Swerve Modern Dance Company, bisexual Azreal (Az) Shain: 24, teaches ballet at dance studio and sex phone (Call Cox), virgin, gay
Lucy Lennox's short story: "Hot Ride"... ["When phone-sex operator Azrael gets into Travis's Uber, the driver profile claims Travis is deaf. Thank goodness, right? Otherwise, the guy would hear Az's dirty talk which would be all kinds of humiliating considering Az is actually a virgin who doesn't even know if he's doing phone job properly.

I feel like it could have been longer. But mostly because I'm used to reading full-length novels with full-length levels of plot (the whole triangle shebang) and character development and crazy amounts of fluff and steam.
Well, this one did have fluff and steam all right... but it felt short because it was originally a short story published in the Heart2Heart Charity Anthology , Vol. 1 (under a different title).
Either way, it was cute and fun and flirty and full of first times and nasty family members and happily ever afters. #hotride #lucylennox #books #queerbooks #queererotica #bodicerippers #bookstagram #bookphotography #ilovebooks
Very short stand alone story that introduces us to Azreal, a 25 year old who is the son of a Senator. He is supposed to be going to law school, but hasn't found a way to tell his family that while he got his undergrad degree in dance and his MBA, he decided against law school and has been teaching dance - and that is his passion. Oh, and he's gay.
He meets Travis when Travis is standing in for his deaf brother - taking his Uber shift - when his brother has to go on a job interview. Azrael doesn't realize that the driver is not actually deaf and hears his entire conversation while in Travis' car - oh, did I mention that one of Azrael's other jobs is as a phone sex operator. Ummm, that's a bit embarrassing :)
Imagine their surprise when they discover that they have matched on a dating app and find themselves at a restaurant for the date.
There is not much else to say. This is a short story, so not really much plot. This is a case of insta-lust, because of course they end up together. I do think that this story has potential, but it was just too short for us to really feel anything for the MMC's.
This was narrated by Michael Dean, who as usual, did his normally fantastic job. If Ms. Lennox decided to create more with these characters, I would be interested in them. They both have bunches and bunches of potential.
I loved loved Travis and Azrael’s opposites attract, adorkable, instalove, virgin romance. This story had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, and spice. I smiled through my entire reading of it. Azrael comes from wealthy parents. Instead of going to law school like they want he’s teaching ballet and working as a phone sex operator. Travis is a creative dance director and an identical twin. His twin is deaf and drives an uber. The first time Travis meets Azrael is when he’s secretly pretending to be his brother and picks him up for an uber ride. Azrael is in the middle of a phone sex session at the time and assumes the “deaf” driver cannot hear him. The second time they meet it’s for a date through a dating app. The instant connection and attraction only deepens as they spend time together and things become more than just physical. Despite being short, the story was well written and included witty dialogue, feels, three dimensional characters and an engaging storyline.
Honestly, I’ve read most of Lucy’s books but didn’t read this one because of the title. Actually, it took me a long time to read her Made Marian and Wilde series because of the titles. I thought that the Made Marian books were a M/M revisionist history of Robin Hood and the first book that came up in the Wilde series looked like it took place in WWII. Historical romances are fine but not usually what I want to read. For this novella, I thought it was about NASCAR or street racing. Should have read the blurb…
Anyway, written in dual first person POV. Good amount of sexy times given the length of the book. Decent amount of humor. No major drama. The only real critique is that the book is too short and the ending was abrupt. There’s a HFN but I wanted more.
