**Many thanks to BookSirens, G.S. Fortis, and Bardsdale Press for this free copy in exchange for an honest review**

When I saw this cover and looked at the description, I thought it was right up my alley. I mean... urban fantasy, demonic possession, crime investigations? Yes please! Unfortunately, for me, this story fell short.

Darcy Caine is a private detective who is contacted by a woman called Carmen Viramontes to solve a missing persons case. Darcy isn't like the other detectives though, she is possessed by a demon she calls Dudley. After various exorcism attempts, she is determined to find Dudley's real name and get rid of him once and for all. After a short while, the missing persons case starts involving an ethereal being called Santa Muerte... an entity that knows Dudley's real name. Will Darcy be able to solve the case, and save herself from Dudley?

This book isn't bad. It's just meh. Although the story was really cool, I just didn't really connect with it as much as I wanted to. I mean, it has all these elements that I tend to really like, but I don't know, I didn't click with this one. The book was atmospheric enough, but nothing special. It had a "more mature" Shadowhunters vibe, which I liked in the beginning but it got kinda stale towards the end. I wish we could have seen Darcy struggle with her identity and Dudley a bit more. I mean we are told that Dudley is such a danger to her. Sure, he does terrible things. But he isn't a nuisance to Darcy's daily life. I wanted to see that more. This overall caused me to not really connect with the characters.

Two things that I liked were the inclusion of Latin American mythology and the unique aspects of the magic society. It is very rare that there is any discussion of Aztec, Incan, or any other Latin American mythology. I thought this was really cool and I am definitely going to reach out for more books with it. I also found the magic hierarchy with Ammon, Percival, and Fiona to be interesting, because it isn't a secret society but more of a club. I never saw that before.

Will I reach for the next book in this series... maybe. I just think that this first book was kind of meh and forgettable despite having a great premise.

Here I am searching for my next good read. Scrolling! Scrolling!! Bam! "A Name In The Dark." When I saw the book title, my reading antenna shot up towards it. And then the cover art drew me in. As soon as I read the blurb, I said "yes! This is it." It definitely didn't disappoint. The author, G.S Fortis, did a really great job with the story telling, the character building, the mystery, the suspense and he also added a bit of dark humor which made it all the more interesting. A Name In The Dark is a paranormal mystery book set in modern day Los Angeles.

Darcy Caine and her best friend Paige Whitaker are two young adults trying to make a living. Paige Whitaker is a web developer, a beautiful young lady in search of her birth mother, who abandoned her. Darcy Caine is a private investigator possessed by a demon whom she calls Dudley. For five years she has been on the hunt for the demon's real name in order to exorcise it and send it back to hell (or so I thought.) When Elizabeth Viramontes, daughter of a rich and powerful woman, goes missing she takes up the case to find her. But something is not right. Why would someone kidnap Elizabeth Viramontes? How did she get mixed up in a Mexican cult that worships nuestra señora de la santa muerte (a dark Saint), and which is also known for its drug affiliation? And lastly, who is Carmen Viramontes?

I love books with strong female leading characters and this happens to be one of them. This story is action packed and filled with twists and turns that makes it so unpredictable. I must say that there are trigger warnings like violence, profanity and death, but it adds up to the originality of the story. The character development is solid. There's also a secondary plot embedded into the story which is very much connected to the primary. There are so many characters in the story but not too much that makes the reader confused. The characters are also relatable.

This book doesn't seem to be professionally edited. There were missing words, apostrophe and word repetition which was really distracting. Another round of editing/proofreading will do justice to those errors. Due to the trigger warnings I mentioned earlier, I would recommend this book to teenagers above sixteen-years-old and adults that enjoy paranormal fiction with a healthy dose of mystery and suspense. If you are also a reader of historical fiction and the supernatural, then I gladly recommend this book for your enjoyment.

In conclusion, special thanks go to G.S. Fortis and booksirens for giving me this advance readers copy for free in exchange for my honest review.

I have one important question. When will the next book come out?

Darcy Caine is a private investigator. She lives in Los Angeles with her best friend Paige. Darcy has a secret. A secret you wouldn’t believe. She is possessed by a demon. She wants that demon out of her body but to do that she has to find out its name.
Her latest case might just do the trick. She is hired by a woman to find her daughter. As she follows leads, she has to face things she had no idea were real. But nothing and no one can stop her.

Do you know the feeling when you start reading a book and after the first sentence you just know that this book will be super amazing? It’s the writing style. I so love when a book speaks to my heart. Okay, I know this book is about demons, witches and other supernatural beings but still...

Darcy is such a cool, funny and determined woman, can always offer you a snarky reply. No matter how tough the situation she finds herself in, she can still say something funny or something self derogatory. I find it refreshing when a character knows his or her shortcomings.
Paige is Darcy’s best friend. Tough, strong-willed, willing to go to Hell and back for Darcy. Who wouldn’t want a friend like that?
David is the cop friend of Darcy’s. He is your typical nice guy, helps Darcy along the way even if he doesn’t understand what’s happening. I might have fell in love with him...a little...

Oh and I’m curious what will come of Paige’s discvery.

I highly recommend this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I've received an ARC from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review
So, I'm obsessed with this book.
I did not expect to like this book as much as I did, especially after reading the first few chapters, but, as I kept on reading I was absolutely invested in the story and I couldn't put it down. This story is full of twists and turns and you will not be able to guess what comes next. Truthfully, it is a bit overwhelming at times, but I loved it because it was so unpredictable.
The characters are pretty unique and all of the important ones have interesting backstories, which I find to be a nice addition to the story. I'm especially in love with Paige, she is an awesome best friend.
There is a lot of mythology and I love how the author did not use the usual stuff. (Though, there is a Russian bad guy at one point in the book which had me rolling my eyes)

Now, I think that this could've been a bit shorter as I believe that some parts were a bit unnecessary since there was really a lot going on (which isn't always a bad thing, but this time I think it needed a bit of editing) + there were some grammatical errors but I could overlook them because I was so invested in the story.
There are also some smaller issues I had. But nothing is perfect.

If you are a fan of Supernatural, as I am, there is a high chance that you would like this one.

All in all, I recommend this book. I hope people will love it as I did.

Summary

A Name in the Dark is the story of Darcy Caine who has been possessed by a demon for nearly a decade; Darcy lovingly calls this demon, Dudley. Darcy works part time at the public library and full time as a private detective who receives most of her cases from a priest named Father Ramon.

Darcy is constantly on the hunt for the true name of her demon so she can fully exorcise said demon. She is also constantly helping her roommate, Paige, find the mother that abandoned her in the foster system. Let’s throw in a good looking cop and a major drug cartel for good measure.

Thoughts on Creativity and Writing

I loved every second of this. The main story line was enough to keep me intrigued, and just as I would start to think that I had the mystery solved, there was new information which indicated I was wrong. The secondary plot was simple enough and connected enough to the main plot line so as not to distract or confuse the reader.

Another important aspect of this novel was the characters. There were a lot of them, but not so many that it was hard to keep track of them. They were all unique enough to be memorable but not so unique to be ridiculous. I have much respect for writers who create characters like this!

And as a small final note on setting, you have to love it when writers can make you feel like you are in their setting. Readers will actually feel like they are gallivanting around Los Angeles with Darcy and Paige. As the narrator, Darcy is always inserting just enough historical background on the setting as to provide enough information without being overwhelming.

Thoughts on Editing

Editing isn’t an easy job, but readers shouldn’t be able to obviously locate more than five errors that could have been fixed by an editor proof-reader. That being said, G.S. Fortis needs someone else to read his work. Also, I volunteer for said position. As I mentioned previously, I found this be a work of great creativity and great writing. Editors and proof-readers are meant to eliminate the distractions so readers can truly focus on that creativity and that story-telling. Writers are excused from making these small grammatical mistakes because they are so focused on the story-telling aspect! (My opinion may differ from the opinions of others on this subject.

CW: blood, gore, violence, gun violence, drug use/drug abuse, body horror, abandonment, death, murder, death of a parent, kidnapping, confinement, vomit, medical content, fire/fire injury, description of injuries, (discussed) deportation, addiction, alcohol

The more you read (and I read a lot), generally the better you get at determining your specific, personal literary tastes. Still, it is particularly rare to find a book that is so tailor made to ones interests. I do think there is also significant corollary between my enjoyment of a book and how many of my shelf tags it fits into.

This book is on the shortlist of those written just for me.
We have the one-two-punch of women supporting women AND women's wrongs. We have urban fantasy murder mystery. A PI narrator with exactly the type of humor to literally make me laugh out loud minimum once a chapter and giggle like an idiot. There's a demonic possession while decidedly not being an exorcism story. Two extremely strong female main characters, with some excellent good and bad supporting women. (Fuck you David, I don't even want to address your existence right now.) There's just the right balance of humor to mystery to surprising and extremely well-done gory body horror.

It's spooky, it's funny, it's mysterious, it's got a great title and a fantastic elevator pitch premise. What more can you ask for in the month of October?

Would recommend this to everyone who likes the TV shows Evil and Moonlight (literally both on my top 10 TV show list) and those who vibe with the entire and weird creative arc that is Bryan Fuller's career. (He's the Hannibal AND Pushing Daisies guy! HE DID BOTH, I KNOW RIGHT??? And also some really killer Star Trek episodes. I include those in that weird arc. Frankly, if you liked "The Darkness and the Light" from Star Trek: Deep Space 9, I think you'd vibe.)

****NOTE**** I received an advance free copy of the ebook for an honest review from booksirens.com****NOTE****

Darcy Caine is a private detective. Darcy Caine is possessed by a demon. These two statements are the basic premise of this exciting, twisty, thriller by G.S. Fortis.
I very much enjoyed this read. If you like mystery thrillers with a supernatural element, then this book is for you. If you like kick@$$ female protagonists, then this book is for you. I was reminded (in a good way) of other tales involving strong female leads - some examples are Marvel's Jessica Jones, Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan, and Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson.
Darcy Caine is a strong, yet vulnerable young woman who is fighting her demons - literally.
Darcy and her roommate Paige are fun, snarky, tough, and sympathetic. The cast of characters that surround these ladies are also quite interesting. Fiona the witch, David the cop, Darcy's library co-workers - all these characters are interesting in their own ways.
The story is action-packed and full of twists and turns. Right when you think you have it figured out, something happens that turns everything on its head. This kept me turning pages - just to find out what would happen next.
There were some grammatical and word choice mistakes. I felt at times that it needed another good proof read. I also thought that it could use a little bit of editing. Even though it didn't drag, it was quite long. I liked it all, but maybe it could use a little trimming down to make it a faster read.
Overall, though, this was very readable.
I highly recommend that people read this book when it releases on April 5th.

I really enjoyed this. I'm...not sure how I got a copy - I think it was either free on Kindle or I requested or something, anyway.

A Name in the Dark is about Darcy Caine, a private investigator who has a secret - she is possessed by a demon she has nicknamed Dudley. One day she is hired by Carmen, a Mexican immigrant who has inherited her late husband's electronics empire. Her daughter has gone missing and Darcy must find her. However, there's more than meets the eye in this urban fantasy.

I was pleasantly surpriesd by this book. The main characters were all really charming and interesting. I liked being in Darcy's perspective as first-person and seeing how she worked as a competent PI while dealing with her personal circumstances, and supporting her housemate/friend Paige. I think as a duo they were really strong characters. I saw another review saying that David, the detective that Darcy runs into, was quite 2-dimensional, but I think being that Darcy knows him prior to the start of the book and that we only see him when she runs into him on scene, it makes sense he doesn't say much to her. and NGL, I really liked the conclusion of his story arc with Darcy. It absolutely crushed me.

I almost cried in parts of the book; mainly the final few chapters. I did personally feel like I wasn't invested in Paige's backstory, but it was good to know that the author is someone that does want to wrap up their storylines. If a second book comes out, we're starting completely fresh with a wholly new goal. There's enough mystery to keep us going regarding the Mancery and if certain characters will make a comeback in future instalments.

I did really enjoy the descriptions of gore as well - it was so surprising to have such graphic scenes in the book and really bumped up the horror; being possessed by a demon isn't all fun and games like the demon just isn't going to be your best friend. I felt the pacing was also really great and the reactions of characters were really believable.

In a way it's somewhat like Supernatural and a bit like Buffy. Recommend reading this if you're into cop dramas with a supernatural twist.

G.S. Fortis may have just written the first title in my new favorite series. Escapism fiction at it's finest, this novel falls directly in what is becoming my new favorite genre - paranormal mystery.

Darcy Caine is a P.I. who has been literally fighting her own personal demons for years, and its name is Dudley. After accepting a new case to find a missing person, Darcy is dragged into a much deeper and darker mystery than she could have ever expected. Throughout the investigation, Darcy is drawn into the world of drug cartels, and the vividly described practices of very real Mexican folk religions.

I absolutely loved so much about this novel. The characters are so incredibly well developed throughout. Darcy herself is an incredibly strong-willed female protagonist, and while Fortis does introduce a hint of romantic entanglement, she is absolutely not a damsel in distress. The strongest relationship in this novel isn't romantic in nature, but between Darcy and her roommate Paige. Paige has her own mystery to solve, and it added yet another wonderful layer of intrigue to a book already jam packed with it.

Despite this book being about a demon possessed P.I., Fortis is also somehow able to bring in a sense of realism throughout parts of the investigation.

I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in this series, and I highly HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is looking for their next paranormal escape. Solid 4.17/5 Stars!

I was given a copy if this book in exchange for an honest review.

Darcy Caine is a private detective who is possessed by a demon. She has a tight group of friends who help her hold onto her humanity and keep the demon subdued- most if the time.
Darcy is sassy, strong, smart.

The mystery develops quickly and holds you to laye night reading you race to the surprising and satisfying endong.

I don't usually read male authors who write about lead demale characters in as n ensemble.  However, I found Darcy relatable and interesting.  I hope the next book comes out quickly - there are so many plots that could develope from this storyline!

I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is the author’s debut novel and I got hooked from Chapter One.

The MC, Darcy, is basically Jessica Jones meets Hulk. She’s a P.I. with a demon living inside her, who sometimes takes control of her when she gets agitated.

The demon has made her life a living hell (pun maybe intended), affecting all her relationships. A Mexican expression came to my mind when I read her family situation: chale .

I liked the story but some sexist details bothered me:

•As the author is a man, maybe he’s not aware that every guy makes you feel uncomfortable when catcalling, no matter his age.
•Another woman advises Darcy to look for a man to take care of her, and she doesn’t take any offense until her age is mentioned.

The characters are a little cartoony, but their feelings were relatable. It was an engaging read with a strong beginning. The author has a fresh voice and I would read his future works.

A Name in the Dark is a Dark Urban fantasy/crime novel about a woman named Darcy Caine, who has been possessed by the demon who killed her brother ever since she was a teenager. With her best friend at her side to help soothe the beast inside her, Darcy works on and off as a Private Investigator. But she longs for nothing more than to live a normal life and that all hinges on one thing—finding the name of the demon who has ruined her life and getting it out.

Darcy is drawn into a missing person's case that is linked to a violent cult who worships a death deity. As Darcy and her friend Paige dig deeper into the events surrounding the disappearance, they find there is much more going on than meets the eye, and Darcy must choose between hiding behind her safety nets or using the power she shares with the demon to its full potential.

I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. It was well written, the characters charming and likable, and while there were a few pacing issues they seemed to resolve themselves well enough by the end. Darcy needs to keep herself under control at all times, and while that is completely understandable, there were times during her narration that the story appeared to lose heart and my connection faltered around the middle to Darcy and the plot itself.

One aspect that I dearly wish had been explored was Darcy and her demon "Dudley". There were plenty of call-outs to Dudley being very aware of what was happening around him, even when he was not in control, and I wanted to see more of an interaction between them than just pain or stomach rumblings. The idea of that is what drew me to the book in the first place, but unfortunately, that was simply not the focus.

Technically, the book is well relatively well done. There are varying plot threads, a decent cast, an intertwined mystery to follow—but there was almost something about it that was too "by the book" for me. A coldness in the presentation that detached me. But it was fun, easy to get through, and definitely a concept that I enjoyed all the same

The main character in this book is a young woman called Darcy Caine, named after a character in Pride and Prejudice by her mother, who works as a Private Detective (P.I.) in Los Angeles. She has a secret that she has kept since her youth, she is possessed by a demon, whom she nicknames Dudley. She underwent numerous exorcisms during that time and during one of them, her older brother Bennet was killed. She blames herself for his death and was unwelcome in her family home after that date!

The demon within her is mostly recognizable by the yellow parts of her eyes, something most find unusual and that she tries to hide as being contact lenses. There are few who truly know her, including best friend and housemate Paige, Father Ramon a local priest who is well trained in exorcisms and who is trying to help her find the true name of her demon in order to exorcise him and Fiona a four hundred year old witch and cookery superstar with her own show on TV. A weird mix, but it works. Other than her P.I. job, Darcy works part-time in an old and large library, allowing her to access old volumes and books to help research her demon and find its true name.

Her latest case is brought to her by a wealthy woman’s employee, which annoys her, and she won’t take the case unless she speaks to whoever is in charge. She meets this woman at her huge mansion, which she apparently can’t leave as she is undocumented, even though she owns and runs numerous businesses, her own and those inherited from her late husband. The woman’s only daughter, Elizabeth Viramontes, a college student, disappeared just over a week before and there has been no sign of her since. The woman’s own investigations have led nowhere, so Darcy has been called in. What she finds is quite shocking! It seems Elizabeth is somehow involved with the cult of Santa Muerte.

Who actually connected her to this cult is unclear, but it is not something to be trifled with and Fiona even tells her to walk away, it is so dangerous. Elizabeth had a boyfriend called Sebastian, but they apparently broke up just before her disappearance. He stated it was Elizabeth that introduced him to the cult and symbols Darcy and Paige find near a temple used by one of the cult groups, is also one she has seen on Hugo, the man who brought the case to her for his employer. Add to all this mess, is a sudden and unwanted meeting with the Russian mob, who are also looking for Elizabeth. This will not turn out to be a simple missing person case.

Darcy has already felt the hand of Santa Muerte, whilst on a night shift at the library to prepare for a new exhibit. It seems she is being targeted by this figure, which she didn’t even know was real, and only the presence of her inner demon saved her. Someone else died in her stead and she still doesn’t know why. The other main investigation that Paige and Darcy are trying to solve is, who was Paige’s birth mother? Something they have worked together on for a number of years and which will end up leading to some important if not bad people!

Huge drug cartels and drug territory wars are all mixed up with the personification of death and religious cults. Real life interactions between church, death cults, drug distribution, missing people being used as pawns and people hiding their true identities for various reasons. A great mix of investigative procedure with demonic and religious figures as well as a bit of witchcraft! Great read and an interesting main character and best friend combo. I look forward to reading more of the series or other books from this author. A nice and new take on the supernatural. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I received a free copy of this book from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.

When I read the blurb, I was immediately hooked. Darcy is a private investigator, and she's also possessed by a demon. And the only way to get rid of the demon is to find out its name and exorcise it. Then she get's tangled up with drug cartels and a cult. The plot was a whirlwind, with action at every chapter. I did not get bored at all! With that cliffhanger ending, I wonder if there will be a next book? I was hoping that Darcy would get some form of closure regarding Dudley, but I guess not?

I loved the friendship between Paige and Darcy. Paige is so supportive, and she wholeheartedly follows Darcy's antics and helps on cases. Their relationship isn't a typical hero-sidekick, but they're partners (in crime haha). I especially liked how Paige, despite being entirely human as opposed to the 'supernatural' Darcy, still plays an important role in solving the case. She isn't pushed away for being human, but she contributes to finding out the truth behind Santa Muerte. She also acts as an anchor for Darcy. This kind of wholesome friendship is something I like to see!

Be warned, there are a truckload of characters in this book. There were some moments where I mixed up several characters (Fiona vs. Leona - whoops) and got myself confused at plot points, so I had to go back and reread several chapters. Furthermore, there are quite a few subplots in this novel, where some have nothing to do with the actual plot, but rather act as character development. Though, I did find some subplots rather forced (Paige's search for her mother). I love Paige, don't get me wrong! But I thought this arc didn't do much for the book.

Overall, I quite enjoyed this book. Though I was slightly put off by the amount of characters, the action-packed plot made up for it.

This book was very interesting and I enjoyed the MC Darcy who is a private detective possessed by a demon. She is one tough girl but she has a vulnerable side and I connected well with this character. This makes for a really intriguing story that is fast paced and full of unexpected twists and turns. This book has a thriller and supernatural element to it and it is well written.

Darcy's roommate Paige is snarky, tough, and still reads as a sympathetic and caring character. Overall the majority of characters are well developed which makes a big difference to me I need that to get invested in a series. It all ties together quite well during all the twist and turns this book throws at you.

My one critique would probably be the cover it really does not do justice to the characters or the depth of the story. Luckily I don't chose books based on cover art but for those that do (don't discount this one based on the lack of cover art) the book is still quite good.

Overall, this was very enjoyable and I would continue to follow the series I highly recommend you give it a chance.

Darcy really makes this book worth it! she is such a funny and determined woman who manages to get through everything with grace and humor. No matter how tough or hopeless the situation she can still say something funny. She does tend to be a little self derogatory and as the series moves forward I hope to see growth in her self confidence and to see less of that. But I find it refreshing when a character knows his or her shortcomings and can make light of it.

This book has a bit of a cliffhanger and sets book two up nicely.

I received this book from BookSirens for an honest review.

G.S.Fortis has delivered a slick paranormal thriller in 'A Name in the Dark'. We meet Darcy, a private investigator with an unusual and abnormal history, living in a time where her life continues to be out of the ordinary. Her yellow eyes keep others at bay, as does her possession by a supernatural force that owns her soul and keeps her at arms length from any she holds dear to her. And then we meet Dudley, and this is where nothing really is what it seems to be.
From mortals to priests to witches and the occult, the myriad of supernatural elements the author had brought together could seem superfluous; yet they all work together. Many elements of this novel seemed equally plausible. The storytelling is exquisitely detailed and thoroughly entertaining as are the back stories of Paige, Fiona and Father Ramon. The stories are distinct on their own, and also balance out the hype that is Darcy and Dudley. It was also different to read such strong female lead roles and the push for the two main characters to stand their ground as experts in their own right, and also as women. If you're looking for something different ro read, this might be the book for you.

I received an e-ARC of this book via BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Part detective story, part supernatural and part urban fantasy - A Name in the Dark is a riveting narrative centering around a female PI currently being possessed by a demon and her mission to get it exorcised.

When she is hired to find a girl gone missing (that doesn’t seem too unusual) Darcy finds herself caught up in something that seems much more sinister than she thought and will grow to involve drug cartels, a deadly cult, witches and of course the police.

A Name in the Dark is a novel that includes:

- A well written cast of sympathetic and relatable characters (their backstories, their motivations, personalities, relationships between the characters - especially between the main girl best friends duo) that makes the story highly enjoyable.

- A friendship between main duo Darcy and Paige that for me is a well-written friendship due to their personalities and their similar backgrounds (I love how they care about each other, their dynamic, and how they are like sisters).

- an underground magical users community and the inclusion of Aztec/Central American culture and mythology that relates to Darcy’s demon possession and her investigation.

All in all, A Name in the Dark is recommended to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and/or urban fantasy story with well-written characters and a fascinating storyline.

I have received a free advanced review e-copy of this book courtesy of the author and BookSirens in exchange for a honest and voluntary review of it.

When I picked this book, I was not expecting such intense heat. Darcy with her demonic problems is a very interesting character that gets to you. Her friendship with Paige shows a family that is closer than kin (especially after the background details). Her relationship with the other characters makes them grown on you. Even the bad ones become figures with shapes, motives and substance.
Even the descriptions of LA (and I know it) and the different levels of magic around Darcy were good.
The plot was intertwined so tightly with the story with a good pace that kept me from thinking too far ahead and stay at the same levels as the main character. Not many books provide me this element of surprise after preparing revelations and twits with good hidden clues. I will want to read the next story of G.S. Fortis.
Overall, I felt a lot of emotion in empathy with the main character. I will definitely look at skulls differently. And I definitely recommend this book: dark, unrelenting and makes you wonder about evil.

Well this was surprisingly fun!! Just when I thought nothing could fill the Jessica Jones sized hole in my heart this book comes along. A fun, perfectly paced mystery/urban fantasy novel for those who may still be reeling from that god awful Veronica Mars series finale or the abrupt cancellation of Marvel's Jessica Jones. This has demons, spooky ooky creatures and compelling, complex and well written characters.

Unlike a lot of female led cop or private eye characters, Darcy doesn't fall into the 'not like other girls' trope too hard. She's likable and not solely focused on her career. She seems to be thoughtful caring and an overall good friend on top of dealing with the struggles of being possessed by a demon.

A part from a few grammatical errors and description heavy moments in the beginning, it is an enjoyable P.I. novel with a kick.

Private investigator Darcy Caine is possessed by a demon. A murderous demon she'd just as soon ditch; if only she could discover the demon's true name. But when her new case rapidly drags her into a world of violence and evil magic; her inner demon just might come in handy.

After a weak opening scene (why would Paige be so stupid as to invite Brock over to the loft?) and a backstory infodump, this novel moves pretty quickly. Its first person present prose feels immediate and appropriate to the genre. Formatting and editing are immaculate. The characters are multidimensional and believable, particularly sidekick Paige who's also on a mission to uncover her origins and identity. The Los Angeles setting is detailed and fascinating. This book combines elements of Breaking Bad, Supernatural and the Kinsey Millhone mysteries.

I'm not sure what I expected when I started reading this book, but I loved every bit of it! It was a fantastic mix of supernatural/mystery/detective/thriller genres.

This is the story of Darcy Caine, a demon possessed private investigator. She is on a mission to find out her demon's true name so she can finally be rid of it, when a case lands in her path. She takes the case of a missing girl at the request of Father Ramon and things quickly spiral out of control. Darcy finds herself involved in a battle against the cult of Santa Muerte as well as dealing with her own innter demon.

I was surprised that this was the author's debut novel. Not only because it was well written, but also because this book lends itself to being a sequel. I could definitely see the story of the origins of Darcy/Dudley being a complete book and at points, we have pieces of the story hinted at - something often done in a sequel so the reader has the appropriate background to understand the current novel. I would be interested in reading a prequel if the author writes one!

This story focuses on Darcy Caine, private investigator with a big secret. Darcy is possessed by a demon. A terrifying and vicious creature that she barely manages to subdue. In order to exorcise the demon she must discover its name. Her new case, to find a missing young woman, may provide her with the opportunity that she needs.

This book had me hooked from the very beginning. With a cast of wonderful three dimensional characters, each with an intriguing back story of their own and realistic dialogue that had me laughing out loud at times.

The plot was gripping and heartfelt and whilst I couldn't wait to discover what happened in the end I was sad to finish. There needs to be a sequel, in fact several!!

Highly recommended!!

Thank you Booksirens and G. S. Fortis for this ARC in return for an honest and voluntary review.

I devoured this intriguing book. This quick read is well paced, with the story developing gradually. There are a few slow moments (with minor editing errors), but it picks up momentum and takes right off. Besides the main plot, a number of subplots help the story along, and I hope they get explored more in a possible second book. One of those is the story of our main characters best friend, Paige. She is a really well developed character (the friendship between the MC & Paige being one of the best parts of the book), and I would like to see where her story goes. I really enjoyed the exploration of religions and cultures I did not know about. The use of their history and folklore was great. I look forward to reading more from this author.

First of all, it's the author's first novel and I think it's quite good for a first attempt at writing a book.

This fact doesn't take away that me personally didn't enjoy it that much. I think it needs a couple more beta rounds before it's really ready.

I didn't care for the characters at all. David is just a random person I just don't get. He is empty and 2 dimensional. At the end it gets a tiny bit better but not good enough.

The plot is boring. There aren't any good plot twists. Most of the time it was so annoying to read.
Don't get me started on the inconsistencies.

Okay, Paige was amazing, can't lie about that. Only because of her, the book has 2 stars instead of one. She is funny, smart and has a decent background story. I would want her as a best friend so good job with this one.

Also the cover is beautiful.

It was a mistake to read this at 10 in the evening. I was not able to put it down and ended up reading until 5:00 AM! The plot is ingenious, the story telling was compelling. I love our heroine and her sidekick-slash-BFF. Just about everything about it is out of the box. I will be watching out for more books from G.S. Fortis going forward. Love it!

Wow, talk about an exciting premise. Darcy is a PI with a secret. She’s possessed by a demon who has taken much of what she loves. She needs to find the name of her demon to finally rid herself of it, and with the help of her priest, she gets work while searching. In this book she’s hired to find the daughter of an illegal immigrant who is so much more.

What follows is a lot of supernatural and just plain human evil. Her best friend and roommate, Paige, is with her every step of the way. Her witch friend, Fiona, tries to guide her but you never quite know if she is what she portrays.

All in all I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and even believable for paranormal. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

This is a paranormal thriller. Lots of intense action and fast moving storyline. This book pulls at your heart strings. The characters have a great dynamic with each. Paige and Darcy are a duo you don't want to mess with. Two strong women that can lead. This is good vs evil. Couldn't put book down and need to read the next chapter of the girls lives. I hope Fiona is recurring character.

Darcy is a PI in Los Angeles, we are introduced to her unnatural powers when she is forced to intervene in her best friends breakup. She is wicked strong, inhuman, possessed by a demon.

She walks through life with the guilt that her demon killed her brother whilst they were trying help her, after the exorcism wasn’t successful she decides to find out her demons name in an attempt to rid herself of him for good.

Darcy is charismatic and funny and her adventures with her roommate Paige made for fun reading, although her roommates story is also sad with her desperately searching for her birth mother.

As they search for a young girl called Elizabeth they end up involved with a cult with shady dealings, and a spirit who reveals she knows the demons name.

Everything comes together really well at the end with no loose ends, it was well written, funny in places and I found all the characters charming and likeable with a depth to them.

Darcy is possessed by a demon. Until she finds the demon's name, she can't get rid of it. To escape her past, she moves to Los Angeles, where she shares an apartment with her best friend, Paige.

Darcy sets herself up as a private detective. She gets hired to find a missing daughter. The case draws Darcy and Paige into a magical world of witches and gods.

The book is well written and the characters draw you into their world. As Darcy weeks to solve the mystery, it becomes more and more interesting.

I enjoyed this book and hope the author writes more.
