Rate this book
A spinster lady in waiting...

After four broken betrothals, Elizabeth Fraser believes her father’s political ambitions will keep her from ever finding a husband. Content to be considered on the shelf, Elizabeth would rather be left in peace as one of the queen’s ladies in waiting than engage in flirtations that lead nowhere. She never expected one chance encounter months ago would alter the future she had accepted. Will Elizabeth give Edward a second chance to prove he wants more than a dalliance?

A warrior wanting to return home...

Edward Bruce, the adopted younger brother of King Robert the Bruce, is tired of fighting the English in Ireland. Loyal to his brother but homesick, Edward returns to Robert’s Scottish court in hopes of settling down once more in the Highlands. Edward recognizes the beguiling Lady Elizabeth from a brief meeting that involved one dance and a rushed conversation on the terrace. He still can’t believe the rumor she started to protect her friends. Drawn to her dry whit and independent nature, Edward realizes that his new home will require one particular lady of the keep. Can Edward prove to his Highland lady that his intentions are sincere before time runs out?

A hidden threat…

When Elizabeth and Edward realize their lives are in danger, they must rely on the Sinclair brothers and their wives to help them investigate who might want them dead. Courtly intrigue follows them as their new love blooms and a home in the Highlands calls to them.

Welcome to Robert the Bruce’s Highland Court, where the ladies in waiting are a mixture of fire and ice. The Highland Ladies, spin off series from Celeste Barclay’s The Clan Sinclair series, returns to the Medieval royal court for love and intrigue. A Spinster at the Highland Court is the much requested and highly anticipated story of Elizabeth Fraser who appeared in both His Highland Pledge and His Highland Surprise. She finally has her own steamy love story and HEA. This a full length novel. The novella previously appeared in the Once Upon a Christmas Wedding anthology.

A Spinster at the Highland Court by Celeste Barclay is book one in The Highland Ladies series. This new series is a spinoff of Barclay’s The Clan Sinclair series.

Elizabeth Fraser is a 21-yr-old lady-in-waiting at the Scottish Highland Court. She’s been betrothed multiple times, but her father refuses to allow her to wed unless it greatly benefits him. Elizabeth has resigned herself to being a spinster.

Edward Bruce, Lord of Badenoch and Lochaber, is the adopted brother of King Robert the Bruce. He’s been away fighting against the English but has become tired of the conflict and returns to the Highland Court for some much needed peace.

Elizabeth and Edward bonded over a very brief encounter that occurred months prior, and neither has forgotten the other. They are unable to resist temptation and begin a whirlwind romance. The relationship is tested when they realize that someone wants one or both of them dead. They can’t have their “happily ever after” until they find the would be killer.

A Spinster at the Highland Court is well-written. Ms. Barclay has used the medieval castle as a perfect backdrop. The female characters are as strong and independent as their men. The leading lady, Elizabeth, is witty and can hold her own in a battle. The plot is interesting but is undermined by too frequent sex scenes. I give this novel 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers of romantic suspense and medieval romance.

The opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

My review :

When a lady with few prospects meets a man determined to prove her she is wrong to believe she has no real future ...

I am glad I have seen Outlaw King as it gave me some insights of who was who.
This book was such a rollercoaster ride, between court strategies, betrayals, murders attempts, i have been for a lesson in history, even if it was the anecdote, I learned a lot.
I confess I feared it might be boring read as court tales are far from my favorites.
But there were so many intrigues and actions, I was always wondering what will come next.
Elizabeth is a kind of a superwoman on her own, she might have an avenir all mapped out as a spinster but she is so much more, she has navigated the intricate webs of the court, she knows how to act and react and the cost of each of her actions. Why when Edward is showing an interest on her, she sees no future for them whatever his rank at the court.
Edward is a philanderer bored by his own excesses. So when upon his return to his brother’s court he sees again the woman who stirred unknown feelings when they first meet, he decides it is time he sets a new meaning to his life. And one thing is sure, once he has reached a decision, he adheres to it.
While their romance begins as a mouse and cat game, they soon arrive at an understanding that they care for one another, up to them to move forward and make things true.
In between, they find themselves caught in a web of deceits and betrayals, they will need to untangle to see who deserve their trust or not.

4.5 stars for this fast-moving and steamy tale.

A special note for the awesome cover, it is mesmerizing.

I was granted an advance copy by the author and preordered my own. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

2.5 stars rounded up

While I do appreciate books where the couple gets together early and faces an outside challenge together, this book missed the mark. Just not enough development of their relationship early on, and I never believed that they were in love.

The writing style wasn’t my favorite either. Head-hopping from line to line, including into characters other than our main couple. Excessive use of “sword” and “sheath” during sex scenes.

Lots of talk about the hero’s ex-lovers. Not quite Other-Woman but certainly headed that way.

Also the heroine is only 21. Spinster? Really?

For a book that is nominally the first in a new series, far too much page space spent on couples from a previous series — them showing up as characters is fine, but we got detailed and repetitive summations of their plots.

Just didn’t work for me.

CW: knife violence, public execution, mention of sexual assault and coerced sex, death threats/assassination attempts

4/5🔥

I started this book and ended up skimming ahead. Leaving some safety info...

Lots of focus on hero’s ex mistress and his relationship with her. He was also a massive manwhore prior to the start of this book, and hooked up with a lot of women who are constantly around the H/h and still throw themselves at him. He comes very close to allowing OW to give him a BJ but ends up pushing her away.

A Spinster at the Highland Court: A Second Chance Highlander Romance (The Highland Ladies Book 1) by Celeste Barclay
The Highland Court is par as courts go, filled with eager men strategizing and looking to gain and further an advantageous status. This story is about power hungry men who use woman as pawns and spies forcing them to collect and spread information through the court, most times ruining their reputations and any chance for a normal or happy life. The storyline is fast paced with great characters and a plot full of deception, intrigue, twist and turns, and danger as someone is clearly out to kidnap and or kill one or both Edward and Elizabeth.
I loved Edward’s wit and creative banter. “This is not for you.” I laughed right out loud. I did have a disconnect with Elizabeth’s personality a quarter of the way through when her character went from a woman with a staunch virginal reputation of warding off and avoiding men to a shocking admitted carnal crazed women who craved spanking but had never been with anyone. It was too much of a personality change for me. After a bit Elizabeth‘s character got back on track and I enjoyed the rest of the book! I would recommend this book for its great plot, surprise ending, and interesting characters.
Happy Reading♥️

Could not finish.

Got 80 pages in and had to DNF. This was an instant love trope on crack. I mean the main male character gets rejected as a suitor for the woman he instantly fell for, so he chases her, finds her after her carriage accident, she appears to have a concussion... so what does he do? Convinces her to marry him on the spot in a shotgun handfasting ceremony. Huh? I can't. Had to stop reading.

This was a good paced story with plenty of passion and action. Elizabeth Fraser has been at court for many years and fears she may remain a spinster due to her father’s irresponsibility and uncaring ways. Elizabeth meets Edward Bruce at court, cousin to the king. They become very attracted to each other but Elizabeth is wary due to his rakish ways. They have a number of adventures and it appears that someone is trying to harm Elizabeth. Elizabeth is resourceful and brave. Edward, a hardened warrior, fears no one and is very protective of Elizabeth. There are courtly intrigues and dangers to overcome. I enjoyed the meeting up of Elizabeth’s cousins and their husbands as they work together to solve the problem. I did get a bit distracted by all the different clans and who was friends with whom but overall I really enjoyed this story and would like to read more in a similar vein. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow! So much intrigue and adventure in this story! As lady in waiting to the Scottish Queen, Elizabeth has had much teasing and bullying over the years. She spent many years exploring all the secret passages throughout Stirling Castle as she grew up. Edward, Robert the Bruce’s adopted brother, returns to Scotland, determined to settle down. When these two meet, the attraction is instant. Not only is Elizabeth’s father against them being together, but outside clans are determined that their union should not take place. When danger threatens Elizabeth, Edward rushes to her rescue. What comes next, makes for an exciting, page-turner. I couldn’t put this book down.

These two certainly are randy. Masturbation and sex take up much of the novella. Questions that are raised by what little plot there is are never answered. If you are looking for a raunchy read, this one works well; otherwise, I would look elsewhere.

DNF at the end of Chapter 7

I can’t say that the first quarter of this book was particularly good. It didn’t set up any stakes on the romance or provide enough of a hook for me to keep reading.

The audiobook was sort of keeping me going but at the end of chapter 7 I was not invested in what was happening so I figured I better move on. I will say that I understand there is a mystery further into the book but after 25% I didn’t see any hide of it. Not a good way to set up a mystery because your reader has no incentive to continue. At least, this reader didn’t.

I didn’t find the couple had chemistry that I was invested in. And the course of the romance per where I read was quite silly. Our heroine spent too much time popping in and out of corridors and going off on her own that I found annoying.

Also too much insta love for my taste and ridiculous acrobatics like dry humping out in a blizzard. Sounds unfortunate and uncomfortable… meh

Not rating this because I figure the book until where I read could all have been set up and the plot could pick up. I am just not invested enough to continue with it though.

"A Spinster at the Highland Court" by Celeste Barclay is book one in her "Highland Ladies" series. It focuses on Elizabeth and her not having much luck with finding a suitor. She comes across Edward, and he is known for being kind of wild and having many partners. They become a target with someone trying to kill them, and they need to find out who and why. This was a great start to the series, and I can't wait to continue on. I don't normally read this genre, but Celeste's writing keeps me intrigued and wanting more.

Elizabeth has been at court for years. She has learned to navigate court so that she can have some freedom. She catches the eye of the king's brother, Edward. Edward tries to convince Elizabeth that he is serious about courting her. I liked Elizabeth's strength and Edward's appreciation of it.

I enjoyed this book. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Having watched her dearest friends fall in love and wedded to the men who loved them unconditionally, Elizabeth has all but given up hope of ever being married, given that her father is using her as a pawn to garner the best results for his own political ambitions. Feeling the eyes of a warrior on her, Elizabeth is surprised when she realises that the King's brother is watching her and intends pursuing her. Given Edward's reputation, Elizabeth has no intention of allowing him to take advantage of her and as a result of many years of living in the castle, she has all the knowledge she needs to give him the slip. The more Elizabeth avoids him, the more Edward's interest and longing are aroused. However, neither of them has given any thought to the plotting, intrigue, and subterfuge that takes place in court, and before long they find themselves being targeted as danger follows them wherever they go. This book is warmly romantic, suspenseful and page-turning action. Whilst the hero is a handsome warrior and extremely protective, Elizabeth is no shrinking violet and knows how to defend herself. When it's time to uncover the plot against them, Elizabeth and her friends are every bit as capable as their husbands in holding their own and bringing the story to a successful conclusion. This romance is well written and exciting and although part of a series, it is a standalone and comes to a happy and joyful conclusion. I received a copy of this book through Booksprout and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I first read this as a novella in the Once Upon a Christmas Wedding anthology & whilst I loved it there were certain issues that weren’t resolved so I was thrilled to read this full length book & yes everything is resolved. I loved both Eddie & Beth their attraction was so hot but they also talked & he listened to her. I also loved that the Sinclairs feature as it was great to catch up with them. This is a well written, fast paced novel that of course has romance but also the intrigue of court life & the machinations of some clans striving for power. The characters are well portrayed & have plenty of depth. I was drawn in from the start & breathless by the end & the epilogue was the icing on the cake.
My thanks to Booksprout for an early copy which I voluntarily read

A Tale of Two Edwards🐺🍆⛲🔪 and The Bruce👑

ADULT Medieval Romance💕 and Political Thriller 🔪
This book is fiction based on the facts of the reign of Scottish 👑King, Robert The Bruce 1306-1329. Edward Bruce🐺🍆⛲🔪, an Earl, and the hero of Author Barclay's story, is a fictional character. Although The Bruce👑 did have a brother Edward, also referred to in the book, fighting in Ireland during the time of this book. The fictional book character, Edward🐺🍆⛲🔪, is actually a cousin. The author tries to accurately portray clan dynamics and politics of the time.
The book is filled with political intrigue and betrayal, as well as a wonderful love 💘story between Elizabeth💃💋, a pawn of her father sent to court to be a lady in waiting to the 👑Queen, and Edward🐺🍆⛲🔪, 👑King Robert's right hand man.

Edward🐺🍆⛲🔪 was an incorrigible rake, but when he sees Elizabeth💃💋, he sets his sights on her to be his wife👰, over the objections of her manipulative father, Laird Fraser👺.

Great book! There are quite a few characters but they are introduced slowly, and I had no trouble remembering them.

Book One of the Highland Ladies is amazing. All the intrigue at the court of Robert the Bruce threatens to end the relationship between Edward Bruce and Elizabeth Fraser. Edward would like nothing but to be able to return to the Highlands and have a quiet unmarried life. Elizabeth has resolved to never marry thanks to her father's constant manipulations in her life. This is a spin-off series from The Clan Sinclair series, and we see several characters from that series become involved in Edward's and Elizabeth's story. This can easily be read as a standalone, however. Ms Barclay transports us to the medieval court in this steamy love story and gives us a real look into the lives of the women in this time period. Wonderful read.

I purchased this as part of a multi author bundle called ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS WEDDING

This was filled with so many things that would not be happening at court. Our h goes out riding so many times alone and is never missed?

The H is related to Robert the Bruce and you had to suspend belief in all that transpires too. But, it is an interesting story line and kept me entertained. The h's father seemed to have more control of a situation than Robert the Bruce. We are not told if what happens to the h was the result of someone at Court or a relative.

Lovemaking, within handfasting rules and heat level 5 out of 5. This is the 3rd story in a row that spanking is done, but the h was ok with it.

Really no romance, we do get HEA and steam. (ljb)

DNF at 30%

It could have been good, but I disliked how many important elements in the buildup of the romance were told "off screen". Ex: they had met several times in the halls. They had discussed her intellectual pursuits. He had followed her all week.

There needs to be tension and banter in the burn of good romance. This was more like insta love. And I probably read the word mound like 25x in the first 30% of the book and ugh, I hate that word!

The horse ride scenes were decent, and I was pleasantly surprised that Elizabeth was into spanking and voyeurism. That was unexpected for a book from this period. Unfortunately, I wasn't compelled to finish it.

A suspenseful romantic read…

A lovely tale that captures your heart at the beginning. Elizabeth has fashioned an acceptable life for herself thinking she will never be married. Between Edward’s baggage of his youth and his fighting career, he sees himself as a perpetual bachelor. But together they bring each other to life. A mysterious baddie adds action and intrigue to this sweet sexy love story.

Fun read in a historical context

I really like this story. The angst is not heavy, nor heart-rending. The rendering of court life is illuminating. The heroine is just a ton of fun to read about.
There are a few typos, and some seemingly anachronistic turns of phrase. I believe 'dust up', for example is closer to a hundred years old than to 700 years old. And pink candles?
A good read, though, and I recommend it. I like it well enough to read another in the series.

2.5 ✨

I wish we could see how their relationship developed earlier on as it just reads as instant love to me.

I whole heartedly agreed with the king, who felt it was a whirlwind infatuation. Man really saw her during prayers and decided to chase after her with reckless abandon then proceeded to bump uglies on every surface. Did she have a concussion or did i have one?

So much more engrossing & entangling!!

I'm so glad Celeste Barclay has revisited this tale and added so much more flesh to its novella bones. Transforming it into a wonderfully engrossing adventure book brimming with passion, intrigue and danger!
Wild passion, scorching desire, heated intimacies, stolen moments and the resounding sense of a deeper connection and understanding of the other, radiates, flourishes and develops between Elizabeth and Edward. Whilst still carrying the uncertainities of heightened emotion within new love and the insecurities that stem from their past histories, Court experiences and a stifled vulnerability, that they attempt to hide, beneath their strength, wit and intelligence.
All encased in a well written plot full of intrigue, devious scheming, steadfast loyalty, tenacious friendships and the deadly games and machinations that precariously entangle within the politics of both a Clan and the Highland Court. The grievances and grudges, cloak and dagger intrigue and desperate struggles for power. Against the illicit liaisons, arranged strategic marriages and alliances that bond them. Makes this one fun and ensnaring read.
Overall I just LOVED IT... the alluring banter, its engrossing pace, the hot sizzling sexual tension, the Sinclairs, the race to root out the villians lurking in the shadows .... well just ALL of it!!
As a result, I'm really going to have to hunt out the original Sinclair series that inspired this tale and spinoff series. Just meeting the over protective besotted warriors, hearing of their struggles and their immense strength of will and resilience that they, and their highly intelligent, plucky wives, went through . Mirrors the torment so closely in A SPINSTER AT THE HIGHLAND COURT. Sucking me in and really making me care for them just as much as I did Beth and Eddie.
.... And to top it all off this book now has the most alluring and beautiful front cover too!
A great book that I really enjoyed every moment that I was entangled within its pages!!

DNF’d after Chapter 7. This is my first book by this author and I found the style jarring. I could t help but picture Forrest Gump running and running and running with people behind him. The FMC here forever gallops and runs away from the MMC until he catches up to her.

The POV in the first seven chapters is mostly from the male. And strangely, very little of her emotions is discussed. She was very mechanical as was their interaction. For instance, she finds her carriage driver with his neck broken. Does she scream, cry or register feelings? No, she carries on to the next mundane thought without further comment. There’s no panicking, only observations. When her love interest comes to find her, she doesn’t say or do much other than calling his name. No surprise registered that she was found after a carriage accident let alone by her love. Because of this and very little character development for both MCs, I wasn’t invested in the story, sex or their relationship. In fact, I wanted the MMC to dump her and move on. Overall, very little story and lackluster physical intimacy. It felt like a love story between a man and a robot or reading a porn script.

:/

It’s never a great sign when the prologue is an author explaining the AU and referencing their other books. Prior to reading the book, I looked at a critical review that cited the excessive sex as the reason for their low ranking. It turns out that the reviewer was correct in their assessments.

For the first 60% of the book, Elizabeth and Edward grind on one another in every single chapter. Every time Elizabeth goes horseback riding, the author contrives to have her end up backwards on Edward’s horse riding him instead. The characters don’t really get to know one another and have virtually no interactions that are about anything other than sexual gratification.

Somewhere in the vicinity of 60%, without resolving any of the prior plot points - except Beth and Eddie’s horniness - suddenly the author decides to tack on a political mystery. Maybe the mystery would make sense if I had read the previous series by this author, but as a stand-alone it started from nothing, went nowhere, and came to nothing.

I've read other books in this series and finally got around to reading the one that started The Highland Ladies off. It was just what I expected. Being an established author this series doesn't suffer from the slow start many run into while they find their legs, we jump in strong in the heart of King Robert's court and the ladies in waiting to the Queen.

Elizabeth has given up on finding a marriage her father will approve of and is resigned to being a spinster, that all changes when she runs into Edward again and their mutual attraction is too much to ignore. The two quickly realize there's no point in resisting things but are plagued with plots against them. I love how well the drama and action play off one another.

The pacing works well for the setting and things are rushed but not to the point I felt it detracted from the story itself. Even though this is a spinoff of a previous series new readers can jump in here without any prior knowledge.

This was an enjoyable story as part of the Once Upon a Christmas Wedding collection that had potential, but I had some issues with it, which is why I only gave 3 stars. I really wish the story had focused on the first time they met, which sounded like a much more interesting premise, but still, the back-and-f0rth between them was interesting and I enjoyed seeing their romance progress.

The other thing that really bothered me was the supposed attempt on her life - she's sent away and a carriage mishap that's bad enough to kill her driver and coachman. It's revealed that her driver was NOT her regular driver but that's it - the whole thing is forgotten. It didn't make any sense, which also kind of detracted from the story for me.

I liked her writing style so I would consider reading more by this author
