Max Brand, one of America's most popular and prolific novelists and author of such enduring works as Destry Rides Again and the Doctor Kildare stories, died on the Italian front in 1944.
Max Brand is a giant of classical western literature. Deservedly so. The writing in Valley Vultures is crisp and the plot and characters move swiftly and crisply along. The biggest problem, for me, was the premise of the book, too far-fetched for me to get a handle on, to ever really believe, and the main character of Charlie Dexter, also a bit too much to fully believe.
The rest of the characters are complex and engaging and the writing, almost with the feel of a pulp mystery (written at the same time - 1932) is absorbing.
"WHAT A REAL MAN" Could not help but notice this book is a wee bit homo-erotic, so much censorship at the time all they could describe was the men! Anyhow another fun well written western classic with a psychological twist!
