“Es seguir viviendo lo que me cuesta trabajo, no morir.”

Esta iba a ser la historia final del personaje de Maqroll el Gaviero. Es por eso que le encontramos preparándose para, o quizás buscando, “un bel morir” y recordando tiempos mejores en un paisaje que le recuerda al de su niñez mientras pasa su tiempo como mejor puede.

“Se trataba en estos (encuentros amorosos) de seguir un proceso semejante al de los alquimistas, destinado a conservar algunas zonas imprescindibles de su nostalgia, sin permitir que se impregnasen del presente sin rostro, ni perdiesen la virtud de salvarlo del lento deslizarse hacia la nada cuya certeza lo atormentaba a menudo.”

La historia de sus dos anteriores entregas, con otros personajes, otras tierras y otras aventuras, se repite aquí con parecidos buenos y malos, similares mujeres protectoras, lúcidas e independientes, y con un Maqroll siempre necesitado de aventuras sin importarle su inutilidad o peligrosidad, incluso buscándolas, que le hagan sentir vivo en ese tiempo de tragedia que es envejecer sintiendo a un eterno muchacho en su interior. Posiblemente estas repeticiones sean la causa de que sea esta la que menos me ha gustado de las tres, cuestión de orden de lectura.

Estos intentos en que se empeñan los hombres para cambiar el mundo, los he visto terminar siempre de dos maneras: o en sórdidas dictaduras indigestadas de ideologías simplistas, aplicadas con una retórica no menos elemental, o en fructíferos negocios que aprovechan un puñado de cínicos que se presentan siempre como personas desinteresadas y decentes empeñadas en el bienestar del país y de sus habitantes.”

Her name was Amparo María . There was something of a Circassian princess about her that he found extraordinarily attractive."

Un Bel Morir - The third in a series of seven novellas forming The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll by the great Columbian author Álvaro Mutis, the only one in the series not written in intimate first person.

Why the switch in voice? Maqroll is an older man in this tale – a specific age is not given but one can infer the Gaviero is in his sixties. Perhaps an objective third person narrator provides a more panoramic lens, an opportunity to step back and view the arc of Maqroll’s entire life from a distance.

In similar spirit, perhaps also it is no coincidence Un Bel Morir returns to the landscapes of Maqroll's childhood - in and around a river town near coffee plantations nestled in the Andes Mountains, a small town by the name of La Plata (not the city south of Buenos Aires in Argentina). This is a tale of high adventure, a thriller with a cast of colorful characters. Here are several:

Doña Empera: Blind old woman who runs the boardinghouse where Maqroll spends an entire two months lolling about, paying visits to the local tavern or in his room overlooking the gently murmuring, tobacco colored river where he occasionally reads about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi or from a two volume set containing letters of the Prince of Ligne. On occasion the Gaviero will even read aloud to Doña Empera, a trusted and knowledgeable source of information on all matters relating to La Plata, including the young women who come down from the mountains to provide companionship for men.

Anparo Maria: Columbian Aphrodite with a stern, fierce Gypsy air, a lady of few, well-chosen words who hungers for affection. And she receives what she’s after every time she pays a visit to the Gaviero. Is it any surprise this sensual lovely and the aging adventurer form a bond of the heart? At times Anparo Maria reminds Maqroll of Flor Estévez and at others Ilana Grabowska (Readers will be familiar with Flor from The Snow of the Admiral; Ilana from Ilana Comes with the Rain). The Gaviero considers Anparo Maria a gift from the gods, in all likelihood at this point in his life, the last he will receive.

Jan van Branden: Over the course of several evenings between drinks down at the town tavern, this burly red-bearded Belgium talks Maqroll into transporting equipment up a mountain as part of a railroad project. The Galviaro smells a rat. Is van Branden really Belgium? Does he, in fact, have a background in engineering? Are those crates loaded with railroad equipment or something highly illegal and maybe even dangerous? He initially vacillates but ultimately surrenders and accepts the proposition. Hey, the Gaviero might be old but he still has the fire of risk and adventure in his soul. After all, sitting around the boardinghouse reading books to an old blind woman strikes him as a less appealing alternative. He reflects: “The real tragedy of aging lay in the fact that an eternal boy still lives inside us, unaware of the passing of time.”

The Helpers: Rancher Don Anibal offers hospitality and seasoned advice as the Gaviero makes his way up the mountain. There’s danger around every bend. Maqroll is joined by Zuro, a young man who proves an invaluable sidekick, an expert mule driver, desperately needed as mules are carrying the load. On one trek up Zuro warns Maqroll, “Be careful of your sleep, Señor. You need to stay alive. In the barrens altitude the exhaustion make you dream a lot. It’s not good for you. You don’t get your strength back, and they’re never good dreams. Just nightmares. I know what I’m talking about: the foreigners who came to try mining all went crazy and tried to murder each other in the tavern or drowned themselves in the whirlpools in the river.”

Men in Uniform: The Gaviero usually has had to deal with both the police and the military at one point or the other during the misadventure part of his adventures. Never a totally satisfying or pleasant experience but Maqroll knows the drill only too well – either cooperate or in all likelihood lose your freedom or even your life. On this mountain adventure it isn’t any different. He’s seen it many times before. He is brought before a Captain Segura who demands his orders be followed without exception and a Captain Ariza who demands he repeat his story over and over without deviating from the truth. Follow orders? Repeat the truth? Fortunately Maqroll the Gaviero comes through as Maqroll the Gaviero – a most satisfying reading experience.

Lastly, permit me to underscore the sumptuous language and exquisite storytelling. There's good reason fans of Maqroll cherish Álvaro Mutis' cycle of seven novellas. And I'm sure Un Bel Morir is high on the list.

Ότι και να πεις για τον συγκεκριμένο συγγραφέα είναι λίγο..αφήνω αυτό εδώ το απόσπασμα και δεν λέω τίποτε άλλο, το πενταρι έχει καταχωρηθεί διαβάζοντας μόλις τις 44 από τις 170 σελιδες και είναι ήδη αρκετές.

Ο Μακρόλ Γκαβιέρο φαίνεται να έχει φτάσει στο τέλος της διαδρομής. Ξεβρασμένος σε ένα παραποτάμιο χωριό χτισμένο στη λάσπη, επαναλάμβανει κουρασμένα, σχεδόν συνειδητά, το ίδιο λάθος που στοίχειωσε όλες τις άδοξες περιπέτειές του στο παρελθόν: η ευθικρισία του αμβλύνεται καθώς το κυνήγι για γρηγορο κέρδος δεν είναι παρά η δικαιολογία για μια ακόμα απόπειρα να κατακτήσει την πάντα θολή, απαταληλή "ουτοπία" του.
Στο πιο αυτοβιογραφικό από τα βιβλία αυτής της άτυπης τριλογίας, ο Mutis μεταδίδει στον ήρωα του την αίσθηση κόπωσης, σωματικής και ψυχικής, που ενδεχομένως ένιωθε και ο ίδιος μπροστά στο επευλαύνον γήρας. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι αυτή η πιο "στεγνή" απο όλες τις περιπέτειες του Μακρόλ λαμβάνει εξολοκλήρου χώρα στη στεριά, και το υγρό στοιχείο, που άλλοτε λειτουργούσε απελευθερωτικά, είναι παρόν εδώ σε μορφή αργιλώδη, ως λάσπη ή ως την επίμονη τροπική βροχή που σπρώχνει τον ήρωα μας στον πυθμένα ενός αλληγορικού βάλτου.
Οι φυτείες καφέ, μια ανάμνηση ευτυχίας από τα παιδικά χρόνια του ίδιου του Mutis στην γενέτειρά του Κολομβία, αποτυπώνονται με εξαίρετο λυρισμό, και λειτουργούν ως σύμβολο μιας "χρυσής εποχής", ενός ειδυλλιακού παρελθόντος σε αντιδιαστολή με το παρόν που τον κυκλώνει σαν φυλακή. Κάθε κομμάτι της αφήγησης βρίθει αποφθεγμάτων πάνω στην ματαιότητα, την παραίτηση, την ήττα. Αυτή η διάχυτη απαισιοδοξία -μια σκιά δυσθυμίας που πάντοτε ταλαιπωρούσε τον Μακρόλ- φανερώνει εδώ έναν βαθύτερο συντηρητισμό. Η "ρομαντική αντίδραση" που χαρακτηρίζει και τις πολιτικές προτιμήσεις του Mutis τις οποίες ποτέ δεν δίστασε να φανερώσει σε συνεντεύξεις και άρθρα του, ειναι η πρώτη φορά που παρεισφρύει στο αφηγηματικό του σύμπαν, έστω και ως υπαινιγμός, σαν λεπτά διατυπωμένο σχόλιο.
Σίγουρα όχι η πιο συναρπαστική ιστορία του Μακρόλ, ο "Ωραίος Θάνατος" είναι μάλλον η πιο στοχαστική, διάστικτη με αφορισμούς- αποστάγματα μιας ζωής με αναρίθμητες ουλές και προικισμένης με σπάνια σοφία.
Όπως το θέτει ωραία ο Mutis σε μια συνέντευξή του που παρατίθεται ως επίμετρο, ο Μακρόλ υπήρξε ο αντικατροπισμός του εαυτού του: ένας καλός σύντροφος που επιπλέον τόλμησε να διαβεί κατώφλια μπροστά στα οποία ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας είχε διστάσει. Τρυφερό αν και βαρύ κλείσιμο της τριλογίας, το βιβλίο μπορεί να διαβαστεί αυτόνομα αλλά θα ήταν κρίμα, μιας και μόνο μεγαλώνοντας μαζί με τον Μακρόλ Γκαβιέρο, από σελίδα σε σελίδα και από ταξίδι σε ταξίδι μπορεί κανείς να νιώσει την αγωνία του για εναν "ωραίο θάνατο", για ένα τέλος που θα έδινε κάποιο νόημα, μια υποψία συνοχής σε αυτό το άναρχο και πυρετώδες κυνηγητό που είναι η ζωή μας.

Ah, le mille avventure di Maqroll il Gabbiere... i romanzi di Mutis mi fanno sempre lo stesso effetto: una voglia matta di esserci dentro.

“Un bel morir” me decepcionó en comparación con las primeras dos novelas de Maqroll el Gaviero, “La nieve del almirante” y “Ilona llega con la lluvia'', las dos obras magistrales. El personaje de Maqroll es tan ambiguo y entrañable como nunca, pero la trama de “Un bel morir” es más predecible y menos caprichosa que la de las primeras dos novelas. Además, hay varios acontecimientos importantes que suceden “fuera de la pantalla”, por así decirlo, y en general las relaciones entre las personas no son tan emotivas ni convincentes como antes.
Pienso leer todas las novelas de Maqroll, pero espero que “Un bel morir” no sea una señal de deterioro general de la saga del Gaviero.

Una nueva aventura de Maqroll, esta vez en tierra firme, aunque recale en la margen de un río por el que ha venido y por el que pretenderá irse.
Un viaje a las montañas a través de un paisaje bello y peligroso, magníficamente descrito, como están unos personales (doña Empera, don Aníbal, Félix el Zuro, Van Branden, el capitán Segura y, como no, Amparo María) difícilmente olvidables.
Y, en el medio de todo, el propio viaje interior del gaviero que parece orientarse muy bien en el mar y no tan bien en la vida.

Increibe la descripción que hace Álvaro Mutis en su obra, cada cosa la explica de una forma tan gráfica que parece que uno ya la estuviera viendo.

El contenido como tal me pareció una historia común sin mucho que destacar.

Tercera novela de la serie Maqroll El Gaviero de Álvaro Mutis. Buena, pero claramente inferior a la anterior y magnífica "llona llega con la lluvia"

Ultimo atto della trilogia di Maqroll il Gabbiere. Qui il romantico avventuriero si trova ad accettare un po' ingenuamente, o forse mosso da un mero fatalismo, un incarico non del tutto trasparente per una compagnia ferroviaria. Si troverà invischiato in un contrabbando di armi e in un clima di guerra civile. Ma, soprattutto, questa sua ultima avventura è motivo di nostalgie ed evocazioni delle sue mille avventure (e altrettanti volti ormai persi nelle nebbie del tempo) e permeato da quel senso di fatalismo e ineluttabile che lo vede sempre straniero del mondo, non appertenente a nessun luogo pur vivendone molti. Che poi è un po' la prerogativa romantica dell'avventuriero.
Non molto nelle mie corde lo stile narrativo, a tratti barocco e polveroso, come una ridondante cristalliera adorna di bomboniere e soprammobili d'ogni sorta.

Una aventura o más bien desventura de Maqroll el Gaviero es siempre un deleite de lectura, un viaje que remueve los sentidos y los sentimientos. Maqroll ese aventurero trotamundos, siempre inquieto, discreto, amigo de la gente sincera, desconfiado de los truhanes, se lanza (en este caso no se embarca) a un oscuro asunto en una aldeucha a la orilla de un río, bajo la presencia del poderoso altiplano. Lo mirífico de leer a Mutis es que la aventura se evoca más que se vive y la acción no es la guía sino el sencillo mundo interior del Gaviero y su capacidad infinita de evocar un agitado pasado y seguir disfrutando de las maravillas que ofrece el mundo y del sinfín de buenas personas que se pueden hallar en él pese a las siniestras maquinaciones de otros seres viles. Una lectura lenitiva donde a pesar del pesimismo se yergue la pasiòn por vivir el instante.

Primer libro que leo de Mutis. No sé si comencé por donde no debía. Pero el personaje principal me pareció plano y naïve.
Habla mucho, pienso mucho en su pasado. Trata de parecer un hombre viejo, con experiencia y traumatizado por algunos episodios de su pasado, pero simplemente no transmiten mucho.

Es la historia de un viejo que se esconde en un pueblo y a pesar de toda su inteligencia y experiencia que todo el tiempo le está diciendo "no lo hagas" lo hace porque ajá, y porque de lo contrario no había historia.

Y cuando ya está en la mala, en una situación super compleja, con gentes que lo quieren desaparecer aparece una mezcla de Deus ex machina y de personajes también planos que lo dejan irse, con una palmadita de la mano y ajá.

Era enero de 2019 cuando leía este libro recostada en un chinchorro en mi lugar favorito en el mundo: el archipiélago de San Bernardo. Con la sal en la piel, el color a panela, el cabello encrespado y la arena en los pies, reencontré el amor y la nostalgia, la expectativa y la vejez.

Entre todas las cosas hermosas en la literatura, es encontrar un relato con tanta poesía, tanto amor y belleza, aún cuando tenga al mismo tiempo tristeza y melancolía e irónicamente tanta vileza. Álvaro Mutis y su prosa maravillosa. Fue un deleite disfrutar de esta historia.
