I last read the book prior to this one (Libraries and Larceny (Hearts Grove #5)) nearly two years ago, so I’m trying to get a feel for the characters again. I recall Henrietta’s best friend Ralph, his son Scott, and I vaguely remember Olivia. It’s slowly coming back to me and the way Collins brings up things from previous books helps as a refresher. I must say that typically when an author does that I become slightly annoyed and then scan quickly over the reminders; however, that is because I normally binge read an entire series and don’t need a past refresh. Needless to say, I’m glad the content is there now that it has been 2 years since the introduction to Henrietta and her friends.
Henrietta’s sister Clementine has been deceased over 25 years, so imagine Henrietta’s surprise when a scruffy-faced young man appears out of thin air at her doorstep and claims to be her nephew, Clementine’s son, Calvin. Even more astonishing is that he says Clementine is alive! Henrietta and Ralph are leery about the man’s identity and whether or not he is who he says he is. Henrietta comes to accept the possibility, but Ralph keeps his reservations.
Calvin mentions during several conversations with Henrietta that his “mom” told him about a treasure he’s supposed to get in the case something happens to his mom. He speaks as though he knows Henrietta should know about this treasure and that she’ll basically lead him to it. Henrietta has no idea what he’s talking about. Then Calvin is arrested for being a suspect in a murder of a private investigator.
It doesn’t take long before Henrietta is thinking of what the treasure is and where it is located.
As for Ralph, Henrietta feels more than friendship toward him, but since he was her best friend’s widowed husband, she has always tamped down her feelings for him. But my hope is that eventually a romance does bloom between them because I just love love!
Join Henri and her clue-seeking crew in this sweet series, Hearts Grove. They’ll get to the bottom of the mystery at hand and solve any puzzle placed before them.
Next is book 7: Festivals and Fatalities. Starting it now…
Henrietta had a shock, a big blast from the past that she thought was gone for good. Beware of long lost people popping into your life! Ralph had a bad feeling about this person Henrietta didn't listen to. It got so weird and complicated, it was hard to figure out who is who for real. Ralph, Scott and Detective Page had to be her backup several times, especially when she had a mysterious person stalking her around. You really have to read for details!!!! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!
I hadn’t read in this series in forever so I decided to borrow the next book. It was easy to catch back up and see that Henrietta still had her hands full with talk of a family treasure. Others wanted that treasure as well and relatives seemed to come outta the woodwork! Was it an amazing reunion or could anyone really be trusted?
As usual, Ralph and Henrietta cracked the case which may or may not’ve had some shady undertones as well. The case at hand was solved, but the ongoing mystery continues!
Henrietta has a sister and she is alive!! Thinking her sister had been a victim of foul play and never finding a body to prove she was dead but found her clothing and backpack. Clementine shows up in this story and it is so good to have the sisters reunite. The mystery wasn’t solved about Clementine’s son, Calvin. Where is he?
I'm glad that Ralph was back as a main character with Henrietta. I love watching their relationship grow closer over these books. The mysteries are cute, sometimes little contrived, but still written in a way that keeps me coming back. I will continue the series
whole book could have been avoided with a simple dna test!!! such an obvious conclusion too, the only shock was the minor development of the sloth-paced slowburn. so slow.
When the past and present collide the end result is murder.
What a great read and although the storyline is a bit out there it was written in such a way that it is completely believable and normal. However please note that this storyline is far from over. Great to catch up with the characters even if Scott and Olive played a cameo role. But it is good to see the growing closeness between her and Ralph. An unexpected traveller appears in her shop and states that he is her nephew. The son of the sister she thought had died years ago and that he is seeking the 'treasure' that has been left. Is he her nephew and what is the treasure? He knows all the facts about her sister but claims not to have seen her for years. Settling him into a local B&B she decides to sleep on it. Only to discover the body of a PI who had tried to see her the day before. Throw in an arrest, a start to see what the treasure is, being nearly run off the road, the unexpected find of her sister, her nephew being bailed and a ransom demand. Is the boy safe? Is he really her nephew? Why is the mob involved? What can she do to find out the truth?
I only recently discovered this series and in the beginning I thought it was really promising. I like the characters, relationships, and settings but I have been disappointed in a few of the books especially this one. As another reviewer said...the errors and typos were definitely plaguing this book. My biggest complaint was that if I had to read one of the characters ask "What Do You Mean?" or "What Did You Say?" one more time I was going to toss my Kindle into the toilet. I will continue this series and just hope for the best.
I love spending time with Henrietta! And the family surprises in this one are compelling. There were a few points that were extra convenient, but I love Henrietta, so I just rolled with it. Not everything gets wrapped up, so I’m really anxious to read the next one!
These wonderful little mysteries are fun and quick to read. Excellent bedtime stories that won't take you all year to read especially for those who have to work and find little time to read.
