Elles habitent à Beyrouth ou à Fès, dans un village retiré de la montagne yéménite ou au cœur de Londres, certaines restent fidèles à la tradition quand d’autres ont embrassé la modernité, mais toutes les femmes arabes qui peuplent ces nouvelles vont de l’avant, affirmant leur indépendance parfois sans ménager leurs partenaires masculins, car chacune est en lutte, clandestine ou violemment déclarée, pour son droit à disposer d’elle-même.
S’illustrant dans l’exercice difficile de la nouvelle, c’est sur une petite musique douce-amère que Hanan El-Cheikh plonge dans chacun des univers qu’elle crée pour en éclairer subtilement la vérité des êtres et des lieux.

Hanan Al-Shaykh (Arabic: حنان الشيخ) is a Lebanese journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. Born into a conservative Shia' Muslim family, she received her primary education in Beirut and later she attended the American College for Girls in Cairo. She began her journalism career in Egypt before returning to Lebanon. Her short stories and novels feature primarily female characters in the face of conservative religious traditions set against the backdrop of political tensions and instability of the Lebanese civil war.
