A wealthy socialite goes missing… a battered body is found in her abandoned cabin…
At the center of it all lies the witty and down-to-earth divorce lawyer, Toby Wong. How did she manage to get wrapped up in all of this…again?
All Toby wanted was to settle into island life and start working on her own love story—torn between the wealthy and charismatic Josh Barton, and the adorable and dependable detective Colin Destin.
But Toby’s romantic prospects take the back burner when her mom’s best friend, Daphne Dane, disappears. Toby soon discovers that Daphne’s latest boyfriend is both an alleged conman and the cheating husband of her newest client. Could he be behind Daphne’s disappearance? What about Daphne’s children, vying for their aging mother’s money?
When a dead body is uncovered that entwines both Colin and Josh with the Dane family drama, Toby begins to realize her own life may be in danger.
Equal parts cozy mystery and romantic suspense, the second novel in Elka Ray's Vancouver Island mystery series will keep you up late with a twisty tale of rivalry, love, money, and murder.
While trying to navigate her way through a romantic triangle, an amateur sleuth learns that a socialite, a friend of her mother's, has disappeared. The socialite has some loser kids, and there's a mess of other suspects. She'd prefer to focus on herself, but the sleuth starts to investigate.
Toby Wong is a successful divorce lawyer, but her love life is shambles, with two different men attracting her in equal measure. When her hippie mother's best friend Daphne, a wealthy woman with a greedy family, gets into trouble, Mom calls on Toby for help. And, remembering the assistance the woman proffered to Toby and her Mom when they needed it, Toby feels that she has no choice. Then Toby and beau 1 discover a dead body in Daphne's isolated cabin, which irritates beau 2, a policeman who wishes Toby would stay out of his business. Before she knows what's happening, Daphne seems to be suffering from the first stages of dementia, beau 1 has another girl, and beau 2 has a beautiful new partner.
Loved this fast-paced romantic murder mystery - fun, witty and well written. The Vancouver Island setting is a bonus but I would have enjoyed it just as much if I hadn’t known the area.
Review: Overall, I thought this was a well done mystery. The book has well done characters and they’re very easy to connect with. The world building is amazing and I loved how the author wrote the scenery. It was almost like viewing the book through foggy filters to give off that mystery vibe. The plot is also interesting and kept my attention throughout the book.
However, the ending and solution were predictable for me, I guessed it by midway through. The book is also a bit too fast paced for my liking and I think if the author slow down the book and expanded it with more background info the book would be amazing. I also think the blurb needs work.
This is considered book 2 in the series, however, I started here and was fine. I did not read book 1 and I was fine starting here. I liked the overall vibe of the book, the characters and the location of the book. The reader feels like they are in the Vancouver Islands right along with Toby.
The book was paced well, it was a bit of a looping, curving, twisting story that the reader can start to predict, but one that does hold their interest. The characters are ok, the reader starts to wonder if Toby can ever choose between her two potential men and the reader has an idea of who they want to see her with.
The murder victim could be any number of people and the pool of suspects is wide...a bit too wide at times...it gives the reader too many things to think about and process. This is not a mindless read at all! If you are looking for a cure for your previous book hangover this is not it!!
It was a good, solid read and an author that I would read again in the future. Add this to your TBR list, it's well worth the read!

Killer Coin is a murder mystery read and I was here for it. This is book two in a series but it reads well as a standalone. It started off pretty good. Events are being kicked off and I couldn’t wait to see where everything would lead to. I wanted to like Toby more than I did. While she is a relatable character, I had trouble connecting with her. She didn’t like being judge but showed no hesitation in judging others. She still tried doing the right thing and I respected her for that. All that being said, the book as a whole is a really good read. Just when you think you have it figured out, there’s a twist and it goes in a different way. I really liked how descriptive the author was with the town and the surrounding areas. It sounds pretty and makes me want to take a trip!
If you like cozy mysteries, this book is for you! Add this series to your TBR today. I give this 4 stars.

This book caught my attention at my local library as I was going on a trip to Vancouver at that time! This is such a fun read. I really liked the struggles Toby had managing her romantic life and also her relationship with her mother. The puzzle is solved in a really nice way while the author gave hints about different pieces throughout the books which is the most satisfying type of mystery for me! This is the second book of Toby Wong series, but I haven’t read the first one and that wasn’t a problem. I enjoyed it a lot and I’ll read the first book soon!
This was a great second installment of the Toby Wong Mystery series. I love Toby so much and always enjoy her adventures. The characters are fabulous, including her lovely metaphysical mother, her sweet best friend, and the two men in her life that make her heart flutter every time she sees them. These books are more along the line of lighter mysteries, and so fun to lose yourself in for a while! I'll definitely be looking for more books from Elka Ray in the future.
I won a copy of this from a blog site! New author and series for me, this is the second in the series. This can be read as a standalone and I enjoyed even not having read the first one. It had two of my favorite things. There is a love triangle and a mystery. I would recommend this and read more myself from this author!
This thriller/suspense takes place in Victoria, British Columbia. It's the second book in this series & the author has published at least two other books. This is the first book of hers I've read, and I plan to read the first one, now that I enjoyed this one so much. The author is a Canadian currently living in Central Vietnam with her family.
