The Eagle and the Flame

Rate this book
A vision foretold his tribe’s doom. Is the flame-haired beauty the trickster or his true love?

Lucinda Glenforest’s father, a general who’d fought in the Indian Wars, taught his flame-haired daughter to out-shoot even the best men the military could put up against her. When Luci’s sister is seduced and abandoned, it’s up to Luci to defend her honor in a duel. Although she wins, the humiliated captain and his powerful family vow vengeance. The sisters’ only hope is to flee and hide until their father returns from his overseas mission. Out of money, Luci hatches a plan to disguise herself as a boy and use her sharpshooting skills in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
The chief of the Assiniboine tribe has a terrifying vision, that someone called the deceiver, or trickster, spells doom for the children of his tribe. He enlists Charles Wind Eagle to join Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, in hopes of appealing to the President of the United States for help, and to find and stop the deceiver. When Wind Eagle is paired with a girl whom he knows is disguised as a boy, he believes she might be the deceiver. Still, she stirs his heart in ways he must resist, for he has a secret that can never be told, nor ignored. And Luci can never forget that her father would destroy Wind Eagle if she were to fall in love with him.
Forced to work together, they can’t deny their growing attraction. Will Luci and Wind Eagle find a way through the lies to find true love? Or will they be consumed by the passion of deception and slander?
Warning: A sensuous romance that might cause a girl to join the rodeo in order to find true love.

A superior example of great western riding!A superior example of great western ridingA great example of the Peoria western story

When I first requested this book I thought it would just be another western story with gun fight in a little romance and don’t get me wrong I really like that stuff… Hence why I requested the book. Had I only known I was in for such a treat this author it’s a great style of writing westerns I do you believe she will be my new favorite western author. As for the book as I said it’s awesome I’m not going to retail it to you as they have the summary for that what I will say the story is much more than the summary much much more. If you love westerns you absolutely need to read this book. I can’t wait to read more from this author. After seeing all the books sheHey is it’s like Christmas in my watch. If you don’t like westerns and just like great stories read this book do you self a favor it is totally freaking awesome. I meant it when I said this is a superior story to most western stories or any stories for that matter.

This way she can protect her family from the men how seek to harm them. She meet White Eagle at Buffalo Bill’s Show. They fall in love and it quite an adventure. This is definitely a good read!

"The Eagle and The Flame" starts out with the chief of the Assiniboine tribe receiving a frightening premonition in a vision of a person, a deceiver, or trickster, who will bring about the destruction of the children of his tribe. In an effort to head off this disaster he incorporates the help of his tribe's scout, Wind Eagle, and his son, Iron Wolf, to join Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show that they might find a chance to talk with the President of the United States for help and to uncover who this Great Deceiver is and stop them.

Meanwhile in the East, in Maryland, a General's oldest daughter, Lucinda (Luci) who made her military father proud by becoming a faster and more accurate marksman than his men, has challenged Captain Timothy Hall to a duel when she found out he had impregnated her 15 year old sister, having promised marriage to her and then finding out he was already married and considered her sister nothing more than a lark. The duel took place but Captain Hall having missed his shot and Luci having drawn first blood which would have indicated the end of the duel took fire on Luci along with his second aiming at her! Luci took aim and fired again hitting Captain Hall near the groin as she and her sister withdrew and after making it back to their house found out the powerful Hall family were coming for them with a lynch party. They sought to hang Luci since her father who could have defended her was away at the time and the girls were alone. Luci dressed as a boy, put a dark wig on her sister and they ran - past the agents looking for them to capture or quite possibly kill them. Luci in her guise as a boy saw a flyer for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and knowing they would have to hide out until she could get in touch with her father applied for a job using her marksmanship skills which astounded Wild Bill. As fate would have it she was paired up with Wind Eagle to work as a team in the show.

Wind Eagle, with his scout senses could tell right off "he" was a she but kept the information to himself to see what would play out. Was this girl the trickster they had come to unmask? (I enjoy books where a female disguises herself as a boy to the chagrin of a male companion but in this one the male companion is not fooled so in a way the "joke" is on her.) The play off between the two is quite amusing, he gives her no leeway for being a female but quiet smiles show his interest in her strength and how well she is handling the situation. Luci is now Louie and her sister, Jane, is able to stay with her in her "brother's" tent. Wind Eagle chuckles at "Louie's" growing jealousy that appears after the shows when all the white girls gather around the Indian men ooo'ing and ah'ing and basically falling all over the men. Luci has never been in love so she doesn't even realize she IS falling in love with her partner in the show, Wind Eagle. Wind Eagle, admiring her marksmanship and her strength as he teaches her to ride horses, shoot arrows (a cute scene where he is teaching her to make her own "bow"), teaching her about living with nature.. he is gradually finding she is becoming a part of HIS life. And sister Jane is beginning to notice "something" between the two as they practice for their show daily... hmmm... maybe she should go along as a chaperone? And here is where Jane starts to get to know Iron Wolf, Wind Eagle's kola (bff) (Book 2). The problem is for Luci her General father would kill Wind Eagle if Luci were to seriously consider him as a beau and for Wind Eagle he could never consider Luci until he knew why she was deceiving people with dressing and acting as a boy - was she the Great Deceiver he was sent to unmask? There is also another reason - an event from his past that makes him withdraw from this girl who dresses as a boy - one that involved death.

I don't want to give away the rest of the book but let it suffice it will be one, as the others I have of Karen Kay's, that will be read time and time again. It begins the journey, continues in "Iron Wolf's Bride" and on to Blue Thunder's story now being written. Karen Kay never disappoints and I have all of her books, read them multiple times. I hope you will join me, if you haven't read this already, in our journey reading this new series "The Wild West" by Karen Kay.

The Eagle and the Flame is a romance between Wind Eagle, a brave from the Assiniboine tribe, and Luci Glenforest, daughter of an Army general, who has been brought up to be a skilled sharpshooter.
When Luci’s younger sister Jane becomes pregnant by a deceitful soldier who already has a wife, Luci challenges him to a duel. After she injures the soldier in the duel, as she intended to do, he shoots at her, against the strict rules of dueling. Knowing that they are in great danger, Luci and Jane escape in disguise to New York, where they join Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Luci dresses as a young boy, and Jane dons a dark wig to hide her blonde hair.
When Buffalo Bill sees the skill that this young sharpshooter has with a gun, he pairs “him” with Wind Eagle to perform in a daring show of skills between the two. Wind Eagle immediately recognizes that the young man is actually a beautiful young woman, and the attraction begins.
Author Karen Kay has carefully researched the culture of the Assiniboine tribe. She brings Wind Eagle and his friend Iron Wolf to life. I enjoyed her emphasis on the spirituality and traditions of the tribes, and the respect she shows for the culture. It is a thoughtful juxtaposition of the native culture against the white American culture of the 1880s.
The romance between the Luci and Wind Eagle is the heart of the story, and this is what Karen Kay does best. The two are attracted to each other in spite of their different cultures and the secrets that each carries from their pasts. Karen Kay is planning more in this series, and I am eager to find out what happens next to her characters.

A richly entertaining and informational romantic story between Wind Eagle, of the Assiniboine tribe, and Luci Glenforest, a sharpshooter daughter of an Army general, after they are paired together in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Both, Wind Eagle and Luci were there for reasons of their own which they didn’t want anyone else to know. Working together, they can’t deny the growing attraction they have for each other. But is it enough for a lasting love or will their lies ruin everything?

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The author did a great job with the backgrounds of the characters and kept the story flowing from page to page. The detailed descriptions made the book visually stimulating as well. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Eagle and The Flame by Karen Kay

A compelling page turning story of two sisters, one a sharp shooter and the other sister with child. Both on the run, undercover and in hiding. Both sisters falling in love with men who are not of their own culture. These men love them, care for them and they protect them. Will their father approve of the men his daughters have fallen in love with? I loved reading this book which is full of action. I did not want this book to end. I highly recommend this beautifully written book.

Very good story.
Mostly what is there to appreciate is decent background concerning Native Americans, their customs and culture.
As for the plot the main female character is a little lacking for my taste.
She starts as quite independent, brave girl and then she meets Indian womanizer and ends up as mellow, insecure, submissive wife.
Not so impressive.

Interesting story!

Lots of historical facts in this story lead you to really see life as it was during this era, but the storyline seemed to suffer. It made for some dry reading. And worse of all, it didn't really end! The dreaded cliffhanger! But I will read on!
