Life Is a 4-Letter Word: Laughing and Learning Through 40 Life Lessons

Rate this book
Life Is a 4-Letter Word consists of 40 brief autobiographical essays, each of which culminates in a valuable “life lesson.” This is the kind of collection that everyday people will relate to.

Written in a style that is engaging, warm, humorous, and conversational, Dr. David Levy brings his insights and expertise as a veteran psychologist (and baby boomer) and shares a lifetime journey of personal reflections, growth, and wisdom.

Unlike many other self-help books, this book does not lecture, preach, or dispense advice. It’s not a “how to” book. Rather, as the stories unfold, readers are enticed to look at, reflect on, and find meaning in, their own lives…while laughing, wincing, and learning all along the way. In the same way that Richard Carlson's Don't Sweat the Small Stuff inspired a generation, so will Dr. David Levy's uplifting stories and wise advice.

A simple straight-forward review for this endearing, helpful, smart book.

Life Is a 4-Letter Word contains forty brief essays, autobiographical in scope, written by Dr. Levy, a psychologist by training.

The essays are easy to read and rewarding with useful nuggets of advice and self-acceptance.

My favorite aspect of the book is Dr. Levy’s approach to life as a learning experience. One of my mantras is that I’m always learning, inspired by my dad and his outlook on life, too. As long as that holds true, life is a fascinating place to be.

This is much more than just a self-help book, and it’s nice to have on hand for a quick pick-me-up.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

I loved reading this collection considering it non-fiction as some kind of mundane things happening in our lives (specifically that happened in the life of the author) that we think would not matter much when they actually do with a life lesson/moral at the end of each chapter.

The writing style is crisp and simple. It is easy to follow and totally relatable.

This is the first book by the author that I have read and I loved it.

I need such books when I need some kind of motivation and this one came to me at the right time.

I would have loved the book more if some more events of everyday mundane life have been included. Somehow some chapters seem too incomplete and some chapters seem too lengthy without a purpose.

Overall, it's a good read. It's an insightful read I would say.

Thanks #NetGalley for the book #LifeIsA4LetterWord

This was not a self help book where the author wants to change your way of thinking. It's a fun read. I was entertained and enjoyed reading it.
I think Life is a Four Letter Word is a great gift idea or fun hostess gift.
I gave this book 4 stars and recommend it.

David Levy uses his 65 years of life to pick out “life lessons” he has learned over the years. This would make a good “bathroom” or waiting room book. What I really liked is how his approach encourages the reader to examine their own life for lessons.

It all began at the doctor’s office, when author David Levy was only 6 years old, trying to talk his way out of an injection from Nurse Gabe. The LIFE LESSON he quickly learned from that experience was summed up in three words from a Nike slogan, ‘Just Do It’ or when you have to face the inevitable, it’s best to just get it over with.

This book is a compilation of anecdotes, and life experiences in which author Levy had collected over the past sixty years. The book was an easy read, and could probably be read quickly in a span of an hour or less. However, this book is one best read slowly over a course of a few days while savoring and pondering on the stories.

This is a great book I recommend that would also make for amazing gifts to friends and families of all ages.

************
What I expected from Dr. David A Levy's "Life is a 4-Letter Word" and what I got were miles apart. Based on the description and the reviews, I understood that this was a book of short essays, but I didn't expect them to be only 1-2 pages at times. That's not an essay. That's barely a vignette. And I expected a lot more humor, something to make me smile and nod, anything to evoke a reaction. The description says that the essays are personal reflections and not preachy. They were definitely personal reflections (to which I could not relate at all), but the "Life Lesson" at the end of each essay definitely made them feel preachy.
• "Empty threats are worse than none at all."
• "Things could always be worse."
• "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."

While I can appreciate all that Dr. Levy feels he learned personally from these experiences, they were not situations that made me stop and reflect on my own experiences. Not a single one of these life lessons made me sit up and say, "Oh yeah."

This was an incredibly fast read since every chapter was short short short. I try really hard not to leave a book unfinished, so I was glad it was fast and I could just power through, but I would not recommend this.

When I signed up for a book tour to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion, I could have never anticipated where the world would be right now. And, as such, this story of anecdotes and life lessons took on a new meaning. It gave me a positive focus and realistic outlook when I really needed one.

This small book packs a powerful punch. With its short chapters, it could have been a quick read, but I found myself going through it slowly and thinking about each lesson. A few of my favorites were “Beware the Illusion of Choice”, “Every Decision Involves Trade-offs”, and “Perfectionism is Flawed”. Both Levy’s anecdotes and lessons resonated with me on these chapters.

I highly recommend this book filled with insights from a psychologist. I think it would benefit everyone, especially now. I know I will be revisiting it.

What I liked about this little compilation of life lessons is that you don’t have to do anything with them. Except maybe learn from them. But there are no homework assignments, and no necessity to change your way of thinking. And if you fail to get the message, you won’t automatically be excluded from a promotion at work or social success or anything.
The format is sort of a Chicken Soup for the Soul approach, and this renders it similar also to the 40-day meditation books I have read over the past year. There are a series of short anecdotes followed by a unifying conclusion or life lesson the author had drawn from the particular episode. But there are no associated prayers or exercises with them. About the only thing the author asks you to do, and this is optional, is to think about the episodes of your own life and what you have learned from them as he has learned from his life experiences, and maybe share them as well.

(I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for honest review.)

This book simply did not do it for me.
I am annoyed with it on multiple levels. I am not the kind of reader, who gives up on a book that easily and I usually see it through the end even if I know that it is killing me softly. And this is one of those books.

You have heard every single lesson in this book at least a thousand times before and I'm sorry to say that it's not the only disappointment.
I felt like I got caught up in a psychological booby trap, expecting something profound to happen but waiting in vain. The life lessons given in capital letters are not based on some rooted fundamentally life-changing experiences and felt shallow for a psychologist/therapist to give as an example.
What kind of a life lesson "When you don't know what to do, fake it til you make it" offers, I don't know. Or "Try hard but not too hard."

I am just pissed.

This was the perfect book to read during the COVID19 crisis. Life during this time has definitely been a four letter word. I have so much for which to be grateful, and yet each day is a struggle. This book was a breath of fresh air, more user-friendly than any self-help book I’ve read recently.

I needed David’s lesson “Life isn’t fair, but it’s easier with companionship.” It’s so true right now. I don’t know how I’d make it without my husband being beside me while we’re quarantined. With both of us having pre-existing conditions, we’ve been tucked away in our nest for over 5 weeks now. I’m sure many of you can relate!

There are 40 autobiographical essays, and each one contains a relatable life lesson. Humor and inspiration abound in this self-help book.

NUGGET GAINED: There are too many to list. Here’s my favorite: There’s not much I can control right now, and it’s ok! I’m happier when I’m easier on myself.

Thank you to Suzy Approved Book Tours, David Levy, and Mango Publishing for my gifted copy of this book that has helped me so much!

I tried numerous of times to get into this book and I really couldn't. The "lessons" in the book...you've seen it multiple of times, and although the book isn't meant to be preachy...the "life lessons" at the end of the essays felt that way. It's cool that Dr. Levy learned from all his experiences but, I didn't feel i learned anything. I was waiting for that moment that would make me go: "yes!" but sadly that moment never happened.
The whole thing "fake it till you make it" advice didn't ever sit well with me. I think that's horrible advice. I usually am never harsh with book reviews, but this book just rubbed me the wrong way and I basically have a meh attitude towards it.

As you age, you get your nerves settled and you start to accept things that you cannot change and start adjusting to life in a proper way.
This book is about such nuggets learnt through real life experiences and presented in form of small crisp chapters. At end of each their is lesson which is learnt through that event.
It is simple and it doesn't claim to be any magical book to make you successfull.
It is easy to read, easy in language and definitely enjoyable.
It is like your elder brother sitting with you on a dinner and sharing his thoughts.
Just read it in place of any artificial Self help book.

I never could have imagined how much life would change from the time I received this book to read and review. I couldn’t have imagined how much I need this book right now.
.
Dr. Levy shares 40 essays from his own life to highlight the wisdom of the life lessons in the book. Some of the essays that really resonated with me include “Things Can Always Be Worse”. I remind myself of this nearly every day in an effort to practice gratitude for the smallest things. And also, “The Answers to Some Questions are Destined to Remain Unknowable.”
.
One of the most personal essays and the hardest to read for me is “Zorro Comes Home”, an essay about Dr. Levy’s beloved black Labrador. After finishing it, I cried and hugged my own black lab, Benny, for awhile and gently put this little book on my shelf to keep forever. Because no matter how old I am, I still need all the wisdom, humor and positivity that this book has brought me. Even though life is difficult and scary, especially now, books can help. And we’re all in this together.
.
I urge you to pick up a copy of Life is a 4-Letter Word for yourself or someone who is struggling right now.

David A. Levy, Author of "Life is a 4 Letter Word Laughing and Learning Through 40 Life Lessons" has written a thought-provoking, witty, and intriguing self-help and a nonfiction book.  I love that the author doesn't "preach" to the readers, but through short anecdotal "essays", he shares the outcomes that he has experienced which can be helpful to others. I found some of the essays delightful with humor. The author has an easy-going style of writing which is very relatable.

For example in the essay, "The Attachment" the author writes that he remembers as a young boy that his father had three baby ducklings in their garage, named "Huey, Dewey, and Louie" and they provided shelter, and food. When the ducklings got older, it was time to take them to the lake where other ducks were. The problem with duckling or baby chicks is they get very attached to who they first see, and it was difficult getting them to stay. This reminds me of hatching baby chicks in our Kindergarten classrooms. We did this for the first few years, and the children loved watching the baby chicks hatch. I assumed they were going to a farm, and then I realized you can't assume anything. It seems in New York City, the chicks have to be inoculated, and were going to be picked up and brought to the zoo as food for the snakes. The other Kindergarten teacher and I took them home and found the chicks homes on local farms in the country. I know there is a cycle of life, but we sort of intervened and did this our way. That was the last year we incubated chicks. Of course, the author has a lesson for his essay, which prompted me to share my experience.

There are many fun essays and "lessons" that all of us can relate to. I would highly recommend this enjoyable thought-provoking book for those readers who enjoy self-help books with humor.

This was an excellent read! I love how it's divided into short vignettes/essays, each centered on one life lesson. I downloaded this on my Kindle app on my phone, and each was short enough to read while in line or other waiting situations. Because they are positive stories, my whole outlook during those waiting times was greatly improved because of what I was reading. They also are quick reads right before bed.

I enjoyed the format with short chapters/vignettes, easy followed by a summarizing moral. This is an easy read, using plain language meant for the masses; I liked the lack of "psycho-babel" or unwieldy academic words. It is light in tone and not at all preachy.

This is a fun book and a quick read. It is full of quick little bits of advice to help you get through the tough times and to help you to remember not to take life, or yourself too seriously. You’ll get to read fun stories about the author's post college trip to a free clinic and how his imagination took off as he read a pamphlet on venereal diseases. Or, you can read about his experience going back to viewing the wonders of Cinderella in a theater as an adult. All told from his witty and creative perspective. There are over 200 pages of laughter and life lessons that will keep you turning the page for more.

I really enjoyed Life is a 4-Letter Word.

The writing style of a series of 40 short essays makes for a easy, fun , albeit inspiring read.

The chapters all held a positive theme with a "moral of the story" that was written in language that was easy to understand.

This book is one that I will go back to time and time again as it is timeless in the positivity that we all need in our lives.

Well, David Levy has made me a liar.
I’m constantly asked if I re-read books, and the answer is no. I am one of those people who just never get the same “feels” as I did the very first time I read something, and so re-reading is just useless to me. Until now. Life Is A 4-Letter Word is now the book that I want to carry around with me constantly, have on my person at every moment of every day, and re-read the brilliant advice given in such relatable stories. {SIGH}

David wrote this awesome book of essays based on little life lessons he experienced on his own, with a unique file of “sticky notes” he collected on the way. These stories are all true experiences that David kindly shares in just a few paragraphs that give eye opening advice that each and every one of us can savor in our own way. There  is not one story here we all can’t relate to, and probably come back with a comparable story of our own.

Each story is short and simple, and the entire book can be read in one sitting, I finished it in 2 hours. (Probably could have been done in less but heaven forbid I can read without being disturbed).
I laughed (The Marvels of Cynicism).
I cried (The Nature of Attachment).
I totally got pissed off (Testing the Limits), ~oh David that car, oh my heart, I just can’t believe how stupid that was, If you only knew how much I love my little red convertible, I felt your pain, really I think I FELT it!
I totally related (Empathetic Failure) ~I swear my ex-therapist came from the same school yours did.
I felt the pressure of change (The Prozac Dilemma)
And in the end I realized that my flawed perfectionism is nothing to worry about (Perfectly Flawed).

And thats just a few of the things I took away from reading it.

I will read this book constantly. I will buy copies of it and have it laying around my house, I will give it as gifts to my friends. There is no better way to change your thinking until you read a book where someone else shows you all their own personal flaws and then points out after the fact what the “bright side” was. This was magnificent. Such a treasure. 5 stars and a highly highly recommend. Probably the best written 'self-help' and 'advice' book I have ever read.

Also check out David’s website, he has personal photos that correlate to a lot of the stories. (Yes, they really are all true). I am sharing a few of my favorites here.

I just would like to thank Dr. David A. Levy,  Suzanne Leopold of Suzy Approved Book Tours, and Mango Publishing (#partner) for the gifted copy of this book for my unbiased and honest opinion for review.

Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

So this short book is essentially 40 situations from the author's life with short one sentence lessons that presumably connect to the aforementioned situation.

On one hand, the author writes clearly with a fair amount of humor (properly representing us Jews). It's a pleasant and brief read, I read the bulk of it during the drive to Manchester.

On the other hand, the vast majority of the lessons are fairly vague and not particularly revelatory. That is, "Try hard but not too hard" or "Love something enough to let it go", for example, did not give me a "whoah, I see life differently now".

This is truly a pity because the author has lived an interesting life. I would love to hear about how was it to study in Russia. What was it like to switch from theaters to psychology? How did the divorce impact his connection with the kids? There is so much to learn from this man but I don't feel like it comes from these lessons.

Being a wise ass, I can't help but go, "well no, that's not the lesson from that situation at all" constantly. Come on, knowing why you want to commit suicide is deeply important in order to solve it, the coach is saying those things because the players need to hear support, not technical advice in those moments, women really are different, and so on. This might be a me problem but yeah, I was bothered by that build.

This book is sweet and well written. I'm not quite sure who's the target audience (and yeah, for the future, reading a book of advice for young adults by this guy would be great) but I think if you're up for something light that will remind you of the basics, this book might be a good fit.

What I'm Taking With Me

- Dogs are always great, RIP Zorro.
- I really like Manchester and must return there.
- Am I a little wiser now?

I don’t read a lot of non-fiction books. I find that they often can’t hold my attention well. But, once in while, I come across one that is written well, and in a way that instantly grips me. Levy’s Life Is A 4 Letter Word did that for me, and it kept me hooked til the end!

This little book is broken down into 40 life lessons, all written with humor and conviction and inspiration. Each one had me chuckling, each one had me ready for the next one. Levy’s essays are wonderfully written in a way that they truly capture the reader’s soul.

No matter if you are a fiction lover, or a non-fiction lover, this little book is for you. It’s a fast read. Each essay will leave you thinking about your life, having you smiling and embracing life with a new outlook. I highly recommend this to all. With Valentine’s Day, Easter, and more coming up, this would make a wonderful gift for those you love. Well done, Levy! I look forward to more.

Life is a 4-letter word was an interesting book. I liked it because he was reflecting back on his life and when you do that, you learn and grow from your experiences. His experiences were different than mine, but I have always reflected back on my life, it is how I got to be who I am today.
I hope this book becomes a best seller because learning from your past is what will shape your future, but as I was reading this, the back of my mind kept saying, if I had a book like this when I was younger, it would have made me realize other people have struggles, have embarrassing moments or have made mistakes and wouldn't have beat myself up over and over. As the author said, life lessons and that is what our experiences are, just life lessons that we will make it through and move us along in life. There are a few years later I could laugh about but at the time I thought would ruin my life.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. This book is going to mean different things to different people, I think depending on the stage you are in life. I was prepared to see that people would get different things from the book just by the title. because it has been my experience that 4 letter words have their own unique meaning. It was a book I enjoyed reading and will recommend to others.

When I chose to read this book I had this feeling that this self-help book was going to be different and let me tell you I was totally right!!! David Levy presents a fantastic sequence of short essays about his life that provided me with valuable life lessons to thinks about. This book did not lecture me or give me advice at every turn, but made me relate to and think about the story David told as well as the life lesson being presented. Some of the life lessons hit home closer than others, but all of the life lessons really made me think. I must admit that some of them were so good that I committed the ultimate sin while reading a book of folding down the page corner!!! I know, I am terrible and should probably go to book jail, however the lessons were so good that I know I will go back to them for years to come. David’s writing style and stories about his life have a way of capturing you and making you think about things in a quiet manner, which I really enjoyed. There was no pointing fingers or “yelling” through the pages of a book…it was just quiet, wise advice. I really hope David Levy comes out with more books like this in the future, because I would definitely pick them up and get lost in those books, just as I did in this book!

Dr. David Levy, in “Life is a 4-Letter Word,” does a credible job of telling me stuff I already know. Who could imagine I’d read simple advise such as “Things could always be worse,” “Simple is better, but not always easier,” or “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is” and be amused by the experience? But I was, because Dr. Levy is not only a nag. He’s also a hoot.

This little book is not the right size. It is similar to a Kindle in its dimensions but that’s too big to fit into my old bathrobe pocket. In my 84th year, I need something small enough to carry around if I’m going to be able to find it to read it. Because I’m in my robe most of the time, that’s where I look for my reading material. Mostly I find lint.

Dr. Levy has an amazing mind. Simple but edifying. Deep but able to accommodate shallow waters. Comical but as serious as STD. I liked his stories and appreciated his lighthearted look at situations that are not always laughable.

I recommend you read this book and ruminate on its contents. There’s good advice that’s not always easy to follow.
