Writing in rhythmic text, author Andria Warmflash Rosenbaum (Trains Don't Sleep) explores the many types of watercraft navigating our lakes, rivers, and oceans, including trawlers, tankers, and cruise ships. Beginning with the sunrise, boats of all shapes and sizes are on their way to a full day. Fishing boats with their nets head out for their day's lucky catch. Tugboats guide a freighter safely into harbor, and pleasure craft such as sailboats and speedboats offer hours of enjoyment for their passengers. Then when night comes, even boats take a rest, including a houseboat that is docked with its family warm and cozy inside. Back matter includes detailed descriptions of each type of watercraft mentioned.
It begins in childhood during a summer rain, as neighborhood friends gather to release leaves with stick passengers to drift down the gutter of a small-town street. Very early there are more adventures than can be remembered on a small aluminum boat named Rainmaker with Dad. There are hard-to-believe fishing tales and that one episode of running the boat up on the dock. Later there are quiet glides down meandering Michigan rivers in a canoe small enough for a small young woman to carry. There are Atlantic sailboat excursions with a life jacket being thrown to you as a squall hits or a softball-sized lump forming on your cheek after a sidestay keeps you from falling overboard on a rocky ocean. Finally, there is the 1957 Chris Craft Sportsman with its throaty engines and the twenty-six-foot pontoon boat for idling away sunny summer afternoons. When you live near water, boats for many are part of their years.
Regardless of the purpose they serve, there are boats for every type of person and their wants and needs. Boats Will Float (Sleeping Bear Press, March 15, 2020) written by Andria Warmflash Rosenbaum with illustrations by Brett Curzon is a rhyming day trip and tribute to these water vehicles. Bright full-color artwork complements these boats in an array of settings.
To my 3 and 5 year olds, a boat was just a boat. Until we read this book. It was really fun to turn each page and discover a new kind boat, each with a different purpose. As we flipped through, we spent time talking about what was similar and different about each boat and exploring all the details in the illustrations - there was so much to take in on each page.
The short, rhyming text can make this a quick bedtime read if you've been through it before. But the additional information on the last couple of pages explaining what each boat is for can also provide some more conversation with your little ones. This was a fun book and we all enjoyed!
This is sure to be a hit with anyone who loves books about cars, trucks, boats or construction. SOOOO many different types of vessels named, from schooners, dragon boats, and tug boats, to research vessels and submarines! The illustrations are also full of variety and perfectly playful and splashy. The text is descriptive and wonderfully rhythmic, without missing a beat: "Coast guard, freighter, ships that cruise, Offer front-row ocean views, Leaving foamy, frothy trails, Passing pods of spouting whales." With approximately 4 lines of bouncy, rhyming text per spread, it's the perfect length. As a bonus, a page of backmatter explains different types of ships in even more detail.
A colorful exploration of boats (that float!) that will delight sailors young and old alike, departing from a cheery red houseboat and returning after a long and busy day. The charming illustrations offer lots to explore and talk about. Kids will enjoy pouring over these pictures and imagining watery journeys of their own.

With rhyming text and bright illustrations, young readers will be pulled into the story and engaged right from the beginning. This is sure to become a favorite read aloud.
A lovely rhyming book that manages to teach young readers about all manner of boats while maintaining a childlike wonder at their most basic characteristic - flotation. This will be a hit with any vehicle-loving kids, and a welcome addition for adult readers grateful to expand beyond the usual truck/car/train rotation.
A wonderful book that works on many levels. It's a fun rhyming read aloud, a book filled with interesting information on all types of boats, and a visual feast with new details to be discovered upon every reading. Definitely recommend!
So many boats to discover in this celebration of sea craft. Fire boats, tugboats, and even dragon boats bob along to Andria Rosenbaum’s gliding, lyrical language. This book is a super read aloud!
What a delightful rhyming book about every sort of boat on the sea. It bobs along with the most wonderful rhyme and kids will delight in discovering how many different boats there are and what they do! Brilliant! So much lyrical vocabulary and beautiful alliteration! Colourful artwork by Brett Curzon complements Rosenbaum’s text beautifully!
A fun & surprising primer on boats! From canoe to schooner, every type of boat is described in flawless rhyme. The colorful & lively illustrations further enhance the verse to show the boats at work in their various specialties. An informative romp sure to inspire young sailors.
Fans of "things that go" will snatch this up in a heartbeat. The illustrations are wonderful and bright/kid-friendly with depictions of lost of different kinds of boats and ships. The text mentions lots of different kinds of boats, but isn't super conducive to storytime since some of the text would require lots of explanation, though one-on-one kids would love looking at the details.
Who doesn’t love boats? This picture book is chock full of them. From schooners to skipjacks, dragon boats to submarines, young readers will delight in the bright, colorful illustrations of boats and sea creatures. Simple, pleasurable, rhyming texts tells how different boats carry out different functions. Keep an eye out for wonderful surprises in the illustrations, too, like a para-sailing grandma and a coded message spelled out in waving flags. A real treat!
If you're looking for a picture book to float your child's boat, this is a charming one. Filled with fluid, lyrical rhymes, this book introduces the reader to all kinds of boats above and below the water and includes a summary of all the boats at the end and what they do. A winner? Aye, aye, Captain!
Any child (or adult!) interested in boats will love this adorable picture book. The lovely rhyming language paired with the bright illustrations tell a tale about all kinds of boats that float. I love the ending surprise boat as well! And there's information at the back describing all the boats mentioned and their jobs. A perfect book for home, school, or a library.
Boats are bobbing in the bay Waiting to be on their way. Longing for the reaching tide. Needing to explore and glide.
So begins this delightful exploration of boats - fishing boats, fire boats, tug boats, cruise ships, so many different types of boats- even submarines! With delightful rhymes and colorful illustrations, this picture book is sure to make a splash!
Rhythmic texts that really rhyme and big bold pictures are going to make this perfect for a Zoom story time, and will work equally well when "normal" returns. I am about to check and see if we have the author's "Trains Don't Sleep," and if we don't I am going to order that one too!
All aboard for a sea-worthy picture book for boat lovers of all ages. The illustrations by Brett Curzon are as lively as Rosenbaum's text. Informative and entertaining from morning til night.
I am always looking for great books to add to boat or transportation booklists for story programs or teacher collections and this one offers an engaging rhyming text and large, colorful illustrations of many boats of all sizes. I will happily be adding this title for preschool collections.
I liked the bonus pages with many boats and their purposes, this offers more opportunities to increase children's boat vocabulary. I was also happy to see the nautical flag alphabet in one of the spreads, but was dismayed at the use of the L flag. In the alphabet it is correct, but when you decode the flags on the boats in the illustration, the L flag is upside down so that the yellow and black boxes are in the wrong place. Not cool!
In rhyming couplets, the author tells of different kinds of boats that one can find on the water and the varying conditions under which they sail. The illustrations are bright and lively. All kinds of people (and dogs) are found on boats and at the helm! There are sailboats, motorboats, houseboats, cruise liners, dragon boats, canoes, rowboats, tugboats, fishing boats, submarines, and more. At the very end of the book is a double-page spread that explains what all the boats in the book are. Note: There is no mention of how boats float like I thought that the title indicated. This would make a great read-aloud for Pre-K to 1st grade children. They could identify particular types of boats, maybe even take a field trip later to see boats in action and draw pictures of the boats.
A day out on the water taking in all the different kinds of boats? Such a fun and relaxing space to play in! This is a delightful read from start to finish. Rosenbaum's jaunty rhymes offer just the right balance of details and atmosphere, while Curzon's illustrations are rich and inviting. Kids love boats, and they'll love this book. Highly recommended.
Colorful and exuberant celebration of all kinds of boats. This rhyming read-a-loud, with bold and detail-filled illustrations, is sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike. The illustrated glossary of boat types is a wonderful addition.
This book is a fun rhyming book about the different types of watercraft around the world. I would recommend this to pre-k students and would use it to help them learn to read in a fun way.
Nicely illustrated story about all different kinds of boats, with a description of all the boats at the back of the book. My preschooler and I both enjoyed it!
