"...His eyes announced exctly what he was: tamun. One of the Goddess’ avenging angels built from the souls of the damned and warped and bound with iron...The tamun didn’t have mates or wives or husbands or lovers. They were the Goddess’ monsters. That’s what they said at least..."
Mirsaid by Merry Ravenell is a dark urban fantasy, graphic violence with a sprinkle of romance story. It starts with a enclave of tamun on a contract mission to rescue an alpha shifter's daughter that has been kidnapped by leeches to be decanted (aka tortured) for their own sick experiments. Mirsaid finds another woman Gywnn barely alive in the leeches' nest and he gives her over to the Crosses for medical treatment. Something about her piques his interest, but he doesn't pursue it...yet. Mirsaid tracks down Gywnn about a year later and takes her for her own safety from a very abusive environment.
Merry creates complex, layered world-building and interesting back stories in Mirsaid. Tamun have strict codes they live by and are violent. Mirsaid is a lethal killer, but also known as the bookworm/researcher in his enclave. Gywnn doesn't want to live, but Mirsaid shows her value and worth. It is a hint of slow burn romance within the story.
"...She closed her eyes. “What do my scars say?” His fingertips explored them again. “That you are mine. That you will always be mine.”
The story does not end on a cliffhanger, but it is open for more stories to be created from this world that Merry created. 😊🌴🌺 I received a copy of Mirsaid from joining the Author's newsletter.
