Trixie Towers #2

Scales and Skeletons

Rate this book
The bones of the kinsman tell no lies,
A Fae shadow now mars the noon skies.
Fly, fly as fast as you can,
Fly, fly and flee the crowned man.
Strong and terrible, mighty in rage,
Fear Fae in your days, marked true by the sage.

What in the realm have I gotten myself into this time?
I thought it would be a splendid idea to sneak into the Shifter Kingdom. I needed to watch my dratted soul mate’s challenge—a fight to the death—to ensure he stayed alive. I had a plan.
Then it all went to Fairy and back.
Why I doubted King Athon in the first place truly baffles the mind...

The Misfits did not help our kingdoms’ turbulent matters.
The gremlins have given the five rulers and myself four days to find the second artifact, a weapon that will help save our realm.
Four. Days.
It is simply not possible.

My name is Trixie Towers.
I am the elven princess, who is soul-mated to the foul shifter king, and I’ve been tasked to search for long-gone relics to battle the waking giants.
My life is so dreadfully complicated now.

While the book was still interest, - just as book one - I actually wanted a bit of romance, or at least some improvement/development between the two main character. I liked that short, but gently moment the soul mates had. I hope we get more of those! I still like the characters, though again, I want more development regarding the relationship that isn't a relationship. While I know I only have to wait a couple more days for book three, I'm dreading the wait for the rest of the books that is planned (author hasn't yet decided how many books the series will have). I want them all now. I want to binge read.... Please don't let me wait long, I beg of you. That said, I enjoyed the book. It was fast forward, easy to read, didn't have too much information and a little action. I want more depth though...

Characters with some information:
The list is long so I've put it in a spoilers tag.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (New Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/F).
Series: - Series, Book Two.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Hmmm, Traevon Towers, I believe .
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Yes.
Will I read this again in the future? - Unsure.
Rating - 3.5/3 stars.

I am addicted. I am addicted to this Saga. I am addicted to this couple. I am addicted to Scarlett Dawn’s writing. I couldn’t read this fast enough! Time and work was irrelevant to me. I ignored the world and immersed myself in the enchanting lifestyle of Trixie Towers and her resentful mate King Athon.

This saga takes enemies to lovers to a whole new level. There is no love lost between the protagonists. They are in an unfortunate situation which they positively hate and can do nothing about. Their coupling is not hearts and flowers. There is no romance. It is salacious and downright DIRTY and... I FREAKING LOVE IT!

In this book the Five Rulers and their sidekick Trixie (Elven Princess/Heir) are given their second task which they have to complete in order to save their kingdom. There is humor. There is bravery. There is a lot of hostility and name calling but most of all... there is a very kick-ass woman.

I thought the wait for Book 2 was long, how unfortunate of me.
The wait for Book 3 is going to be excruciating. Do I need to sacrifice a baby goat to get the next book quickly?!

Lets be real here, there is no getting tired of these books. It’s woven into my soul. I am going to do quite a lot of rereading of Trixie Towers in my lifetime!

P.S. Am I the only one noticing the strange white butterfly? It was in Marvels & Misfits as well. I think it means something significant.

Part I: Review

4.5 Stars

This book was so, so, so, SO much better than book 1!

Now that I know how their dynamic works and what to expect, King Athon and Trixie were hilarious together and seriously hot! It was still kinda weird because I've never read something even similar to this hate they had for each other but somehow I liked it. It was crude but oh so funny at the same time lol and while I didn't like Trixie's "child-like" behavior in book one, I loved her mischievousness in this book.

(Im)patiently waiting for the next installment 😉💃

Part II: Book talk, best to be read after finishing the book (SPOILERS!)

It was good, but...

****3.5 Stars****

I enjoyed reading Scales and Skeletons and think Scarlett Dawn has created a great set of character, an interesting storyline, and a very, very different love story. While I enjoyed Trixie and Athon's story, there were times I did have a few reservations. All of the characters are original, quirky and I can picture them easily in my mind. The storyline is fast-paced, exciting and riveting. The very, very different love story is the one thing I'm struggling with.

Can a relationship be a success if the couple is not physically or sexually attracted to each other? I know mutual respect, friendship and appreciation for intelligence and skill are a great basis, but what if even those things are missing. Trixie and Athon are connected to each other but hate every moment of it.

I was amused in Trixie Towers #1 by the hero and heroine's hate for each other, but this time, I was a little uncomfortable with it. Having them openly share their dislike of appearance, natural instincts and heritage, seemed mean and very narrow-minded. There is one particular scene that left me scowling at my Kindle. It didn't stop me from reading but I am getting a wee bit sick of these two and their hate.

I almost want something...anything to happen to change their hate to love. How about...all of a sudden, he finds her pointy ears sexy, and she finds his big muscles wrapped around her, warm and reassuring. Wishful thinking...maybe.

I will keep going in the Trixie Towers series but I'm hoping for things to change between Princess Trixie and King Athon, King of the Shifters.

On another note...It does not compute that Trixie finds King Athon ugly and gross. HE'S A BIG, MUSCLEY SHIFTER for crikey sakes!! When picturing King Athon, I have Chris Hemsworth's *Thor* in my head...thank you, thank you, thank you, Scarlett Dawn.

The second books of the Trixie Towers series does not disappoint.

The queens and kings are once again tasked to find about her artifact, but first King Athon must face down challengers to his kingdom. Trixie has been warned to stay away, so of course she needs to sneak off into the shifter kingdom to find out what her problematic soulmate is up to. She can’t stay out of trouble for long.

I snorted under my breath. “I can take care of myself.”
“That is yet to be seen. You are continually getting yourself into trouble.”

The action and humor are still there from the first book. I like the growing horror that while Athon and Trixie can’t stand each other, they are beginning to be possessive of each other.

Kind of like a child - I don’t want it, but it’s mine and you certainly can’t have it.

I’m looking forward to book three!

If you’re looking for a funny fantasy series with enemies to lovers (well they still hate each other so does that count?) this series is hilarious and free on kindle unlimited.

Love, love, LOVE this series!

I like Scarlett Dawn, yet somehow the Trixie Tower series is leaving most previous works of hers behind, or at least in my opinion. It’s FUN! Trixie is fast talking and snark loaded, flitting through a complex narrative that crafts the world as we go. Anthon... he’s a lumbering beast of a man who I can’t help but adore. Put them together and the sparks literally fly! I am head over heels for this series, and I can’t wait to read Book 3!

Pros:
- Very well written.
- World building.
- Characters, ALL of them! Each are so unique and expressed in all their delightful flaws.
- Fast moving.
- Are there going to be 6 books?! There are 6 artifacts.... ? 😁

Cons:
- Still a bit confused on the Fae. They sound all powerful.... and not.

This series is too sweet for me. We have five kings/queens and they are all backstabbing assholes, this is implied because none of that actually happens. Anytime they congregates it's always jokes. Bring these mercenary characters to life, that's all I ask.

Despite that I'm actually enjoying it. I like Anthon and Trixie, they hate each other and their hate sex is steamy , so yay to that. Can't wait for the next book.

I don’t see how this is a paranormal romance. The romance is nonexistent & should these two come together it would feel forced after so much genuine dislike for each other. It would work much better if it was an adventure series imo.

1.5 This just doesn’t work for me Stars.
I’m not going to continue this series.

I'm in love with this series. So in love! Even though not much happened in this book—compared to the first one, I mean—it dug deep when it comes to mates and other Fae-related stuff. I can't wait to read what happened next.
And Red Louie is the bestest! *snort, snort*

3 1/2 stars. This book has some hilarious moments and has been interesting enough to finish. But the world building has been shit, the characters are shallow with no depth and the MC's relationship is just eye rolling at times. The constant reminder of how much they think each other is disgusting while having sex is just ridiculous. Butt, It's been a light funny read so I'll probably continue to the next book eventually.

I enjoyed their hate for one another on the first book however their hate seems to be worse in this book. We are getting nowhere with to developing romantic relationship. I don't expect these characters who have different views of life to magically love each other but I was at least hoping for friendship or understanding. However all I got from this book is uncomfortable conversations about how much they hate each others physical appearance and hurtful declaration of hate for one another. I don't know how they are going to build any type of relationship when they can't even tolerate being together in one room. I hope they improve on the third book because their hate for one another is getting ridiculous.

Also I feel bamboozled by this book because of how short it is. It's literally a novella rather than an actual continues of a series. I wouldn't mind the length of these books if the next New books are coming out with a few weeks or month difference but that's not the case here. I feel as if I'm being taken advantage of when I have to buy multiple small chapter books when book one and two could have been all combined together into one book.

With that being said, I really enjoyed the world Scarlett Dawn has created and I find myself being sucked into all the drama and adventure these characters have. I recommend this series to my paranormal book lovers but I advice you to wait until at least the 3rd book is out to start reading this series.

I have a lot I could rant over about this book and the series in general (probably obvious since I gave it 2*) but I won't because I will still probably read the next one so........no point.
One thing that really bothers me is how many times King Athon calls Trixie a cunt or bitch or any number of other names. I get it, they don't like each-other but seriously how do they come back from the way they treat each-other? The author will have to perform a miracle to ever believe these to could be a real love interest which could be a problem because it looks like they are getting gifts that will help them conceive

This is the UF we all need.

This world and these characters have breathed life into what was becoming an utterly predictable genre. Scarlett Dawn has done an amazing job with this series. I love the world that she has created, but it’s truly the characters-or more specifically, the way the characters interact- that make this series stand out. Trixie and King Athon give new meaning to the term slow-burn, and I love every angst-filled moment of it. My only complaint is that I wish I could’ve been longer. I buzzed through it way too fast and I hate waiting for more!

Can you be addicted to a series? If you can, then I am 100% addicted to Scarlett Dawn's Trixie Towers series! Like the first book, I devoured Scales and Skeletons in one sitting, forgoing sleep to do so. And I regret nothing 😁 Scales and Skeletons picks up minutes after the end of Marvels and Misfits. Trixie and King Traevon are on their way back to the Elven kingdom after finding the first of five artifacts to stop the waking giants. The other rulers are on their way back to their own kingdoms, their magic restored and fae sparks intact, which leads to its own set of problems for Trixie and her ill-fated soulmate King Athon.

I do not have words for how much I love Trixie and her father King Traevon. Trixie is extremely intelligent despite her navieté and immaturity. Her curious nature however will get her in serious trouble at every turn of the page. King Traevon is a doting father, regardless of what Trixie may believe. His love for her is evident in every interaction, as is his exasperation and fear for her safety. Scarlett Dawn captures the essence of a loving father-daughter relationship in these two characters, throwing in her own wit and dry humor that will have the reader laughing out loud.

Then there is King Athon. I really didn’t know what to make of him in Marvels and Misfits. He was a complete ass (and that’s putting it mild), yet there is something that intrigues Trixie and of course myself as the reader. He is your typical Alpha male, a tiger shifter and ruler of the shifter kingdom. Bloodlust and the need to mark his territory guide a lot of his actions. When he sends a letter (not a kind one either) warning Trixie that he has a challenger and she is not to heal him through their bond, she is intrigued and of course sneaks into the shifter kingdom.

I really enjoyed the growth in Athon and Trixie’s relationship here. There is an undeniable chemistry between them, even if they hate each other. Their soulmate bond is one I can’t wait to explore more in the coming books. Between that and finding the next artifact the plot moves at a fast-pace. Hence the reason I read it in one sitting! I had to know what would happen next.

Overall, if you hadn’t guessed already, I loved Scales and Skeletons! The entire world that Dawn has built in this series is unique, and one I’m enjoying exploring more of in each installment. If you are a fan of paranormal romance and fantasy, I highly recommend you put this on your TBR list!

Another Scarlett Dawn book devoured faster than a slice of green pepper and pepperoni pizza. In other words -- damn fast. TOO fast. I sneezed and it was over. "My Fae, I wish I hadn’t sneezed."

*cries while mentally preparing herself for (hopefully not much longer than) a few months of anxious anticipation for the next Trixie book*

This book continues the epic fantasy quest of Trixie Towers and the rulers of the five kingdoms to save their realm. Per usual she is independent, determined, mischievious, HILARIOUS, and gets herself into all kinds of trouble. Her relationship with her soul mate progresses into possessive territory. Even though they still hate each other-- which, I LOVE -- they can't deny their connection and I feel like you start to see other emotions come into play in this book. They're occasionally making each other smile/smirk and they sort of had "the talk", and I absolutely love the slow burn. So slow, I'm not even sure you can call it a burn yet, but it'll get there eventually, hopefully.

Side note about me: I am a romance reader. Such a romance reader, that when books don't contain at least a hint of a romantic theme, it's difficult for me to enjoy the book.

Side note about me and this book: While Scales & Skeletons does have the romance or at least the semi-promise of romance eventually, I would still read this book without it. GASP! yeah, I said it. The storyline is intriguing, the characters are hilarious, the world new and exciting. And I know I already said intriguing but dangit, I want more. There seems to be a new surprise at every turn and because this is a new realm, new world, I feel as though this story could go anywhere, making us all happy readers while keeping us on our literary toes.

The only negative thing I can say is that I wish it were longer. I feel that way about most of Scarlett's books tbh because I never. want. them. to. end. I've got my arms extended, fingers wiggling, doing my best Britney, whining Gimme Gimme More. BUT if I try to pinpoint my reasons with Scales & Skeletons specifically, perhaps I was hoping for more tension between Trixie & Athon (*cough* of the sexual variety, which is crazy because there was already a shit ton), or possibly a longer quest (*whispers* and more dragons). However, with that being said, it was still an amazing book and it didn't feel unfinished or rushed to me, and I trust SD to take us down the right path with this series. I can't wait for book three!!

My Goodness I did not prepare myself for this read. I literally should have learned like 10 books ago to know this about Scarlett, but I didn't and this book was still  better than I could have ever wished it to be.

I have never wanted two people to continue to hate/love each other more than these two. I swear I thrive on it when I read this. They literally cannot stand each other but also cannot stand to not have each other. It is the greatest thing ever.

Think a bully romance, but with no bullying, but All the angsty goodness and every are smart-asses.

Okay. That description doesn't work or make sense at all, but it is absolutely true.

This book was fantastic. I get so into this fantasy world that I get to the end and am completely caught off guard when it happens because I didn't realize how fast I was reading.

This was the second novel in this series and cannot be read as a standalone. So go grab the first novel Y'all.

This novel don'ts disappoint either. It delivers the next task in the royal's quest and literally I laughed as much as I was enthralled with this read. I feel like that is a special characteristic skill fo Scarlett's because you get it with every single thing she has ever written.

You will be quite literally laughing out loud in one paragraph and gasping in the next.

I for one adore that. I love never knowing how the read it going to make me feel. I cannot wait for book three!

Re-Read 3-2022 prep for book 4, they have a run in with Fae dragon shifters and we get to see them both fight caring about each other. They have to keep each other alive for their own benefit. Loved the whole sneaking into the Shifter kingdom to watch the challenge and when Trixie panics she erupts into flames- too funny. Not consistent with her assassin street cred but cute.

ReRead- still LOVE this world and her interaction with Athon is all I seem to care about :)

Reread 12-2020- in prep for book 4. This one is fun since they both still hate each other but they are so possessive that they won't allow other partners for sex. Or past partners. So it gets fun :)

This was really good! I very much enjoyed book one, and was super excited to read the sequel. It didn't disappoint. It was action packed, exciting, still retained the awesome and hilarious hatred (with some good banter and fun moments), and really carried the plot forward nicely. I think there will be five books (I don't remember how many magical races there are, but one for each artifact maybe?) so three to go? Not sure. Anyway, great sequel. I love Trixie and Athon and Traevon. My only complaint is that it was too short. I want more! 4.5 stars.

I love this series so much! I love the adventure, Trixie’s feistiness and penchant for trouble, and the jaw-dropping, delectable tension between Trixie and Athon. This series has become addictive. Well, actually Trixie and King Athon complicated relationship is totally enthralling. If you liked ‘Malvels and Misfits’ you can’t miss this title. We have more magic, new creatures and a dangerous quest involving all the kings and queens from this land.

I had a great time reading this book. It's awesome how two characters can be so wild and so fun to read. Great work writing them!

What makes this series so unique and original is the wild, crazy and steamy relationship between elf heir Trixie and shifter King Athon. They loathe each other intensely. They can’t find anything nice to say each other but at the same time they are soul mates and have to deal with it.

There are hilarious scenes in this story due to the strong personalities and bold attitudes of our main characters and hot main couple that make this book priceless. The elf and the shifter are unique on their own but together they are explosive. Sappy or polite aren’t words that go with Trixie and King Athon relationship. They use brutal sincerity and they don’t mind if they go harsh on the other. However, they are starting to know each other better and their relationship is evolving.

Totally recommending this book if you like unusual and steamy romances. I can’t wait for next book already!

maybe the fae really did make a mistake

In the first book, I liked that the characters didn't instantly adore each other when they became soulmates. Although, their hatred for one another was a bit extreme and adolescent. I really hope their hate for one another goes away in the next book. I'm not saying they have to be gaga in love, but geez they are annoying. I understand not liking their circumstance of being soulmates, but they don't even know each other enough to hate one another. It's very immature and grating. It takes away from the story. If the next book is the same, then I'm giving up. I really don't like the king of the shifters. He's abusive and misogynistic. The elf isn't much better, but at least she has some good traits. This book is so hateful and rude. Even when they were talking down to the dragons was absolutely awful and uncalled for. I don't even know why the shifter king was so upset, b/c he just killed 50 of his subjects without a second thought and even reveled in their deaths.

The story progresses along two lines. The first is dealing with the unexpected and forbidden mating of Trixie and the King of the Shifters as they start to understand just how complicated it is to be mated, on an emotional, political and physical level. They still have huge issues with the mating, but they are learning about each other and coming to terms with what it means. We get to dive into shifter culture not only as it relates to Athon, but also as the second quest takes place there as well. The need to save the world from the giants hasn't taken a back seat, in fact, we get hints that this whole thing may be even more complicated then it seems. Trixie's relationship with her father continues to be one of the high points of the story.

This book was a quick, enjoyable read and I am looking forward to seeing where it is going.

Naturally, after reading such a strange and disturbing mix of urban Fae fantasy and low fantasy adventure, I had to take a look at the second book.
If the first book could be categorized as disturbing, this could be described as moronic.

The plot is ... well, the characters have to kill some time, because hunting for some artifacts and bickering with Louis Louis and Louis for five minutes takes up only so much pages, so the author have to make up some lame excuse to get them into trouble, to irritate each other to eventually jump someone they find disgusting.
If you can overlook those parts again, you might find the expending lore and the dialogues of the merry band of the lunatic fae royals entertaining.
It's sad, that the main plot - getting the next artifact- is treated like a grocery run.

1. I think that Bishop and Trixie will become friends eventually, like great friends.

2. I really am hoping that Trixie and Athon will be able to have children, once they actually fall in love, of course.

3. I think King Traevon is right on the cusp of realizing that Athon and Trixie are mates. Dead mate-bond pills + shifter book on tigers + the way Athon and Trixie react to one another = one suspicious ass Elven King.

4. I am assuming someone will end up dead over their possessiveness and I really hope it is not Caspian.

This was short for me, was it short for you???? I feel like this story just cut off at the end! I never usually say this but, the author should have kept going.

The main MC's definitely crack me up, I can't get enough of how disgusted they are at each other! It is so at odds with the usual romance books, that I can't help but crack up.

This book was better than the last, but I even thought that the last book was a little short/clipped. I feel like I am just getting to the chunky parts of the meat and potatoes, then someone takes my plate away. I feel a little bit more of the story at the end of this book would not have been a bad idea. I hope that this next book has a little bit more too it because I feel a little bit of a let down after each of these. 😕

Scarlett Dawn has done it again with Scales and Skeletons. I love the chemistry between Trixie and King Athon. Never have I seen 2 characters hate each other more. But due to cruel fate or fae in their case they are each other’s soul mates. And man do they really bring out the worse in each other. It’s like watching a car wreck. You can’t look away. And I love every minute of it!!! And If trying to ignore the invisible bond wasn’t bad enough. They have to set out with the rest of the Royals to find another artifact. You don’t know if they’ll succeed, F*ck each other into oblivion( tension is that hot), or kill each other? But you have to read to find out. Don’t forget to have an extinguisher on hand. Because the pages will melt in your hands. That’s right! This story is 🔥
