King Richard is barely buried when the men who opposed him plot and plan to remove the new King, Henry Bolingbroke! With enemies in the north and the west, the new king and his son, Henry of Monmouth find themselves besieged on all sides not knowing whom they can trust. William Strongstaff, now a lord, is the only one they can truly rely upon and any thoughts of hanging up his sword are forgotten as King Henry sends the former royal bodyguard to help his son and quash a Welsh rebellion. Based on the events leading up to the battle of Shrewsbury the story is fast moving with larger than life characters like Harry Hotspur and Owain Glendower!
I was born in 1950 in Lancashire and attended a boy’s grammar school. After qualifying as an English and Drama teacher in 1972, I worked in the North East of England for the next 35 years. During that time I did write, mainly plays, pantos and musicals for the students at the three schools in which I worked.
When I stopped teaching I set up my own consultancy firm and worked as an adviser in schools and colleges in the North East of England. The new Conservative Government ended that avenue of work and in 2010 I found that I had time on my hands; having started work at the age of 15 I found the lack of work not to my liking and used the time to research the Roman invasion of Britain and begin to create a novel. The result was The Sword of Cartimandua.
My decision to begin writing was one of the best I have ever taken.
As with the previous from start to finish the reader (especially in my case) feel the reality of the characters, the history retold, and the personalities of all involved. Brilliant.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A sweeping tale of an England at war with itself. The insight of the workings and hostility in a battle Was brilliantly done. Made you feel as if you were there dodging A sword or spear. Six star tale.
As always Guff Hosker keeps me on the radar of my seat as I think I’ll just read one more chapter today, but that doesn’t happen he is a great historical author. I love English History especially the armor age.
I like the author's action scenes. There is plenty of intrigue too but it doesn't slow down the book. Strongstaff's family is growing and the family side of the book makes the characters even more real and brings them to life. Hated when it ended but a satisfying ending.
Another great Hosker novel,he weaves a good saga,of how a simple camp follower, becomes a knight then a baron. The novel moves from Scotland,Yorkshire,Wales and beyond.
