The couple: Evelyn (Eve) and Andre

Romance genre:
Part of a series: Yes (it's a serial)
Length: 256 pages

Plot: Evelyn is a pretty ordinary woman - boring even. Still reeling from her divorce from an abusive, cheating bastard, she needs a little something more in her life, but doesn't know what. Her friend convinces her to book a trip to Jamaica, which she does on a whim. On the plane ride, she meets (kinda - more like makes significant eye conteact with) a handsome stranger that she runs into again when she gets to the hotel. She later gets to know Andre, the lawyer, who is on the island on businses. They strike up a relationship and he looks her up when they get home. They spend a wonderful evening together, but then her ex-husband shows up and there's a horrible scene, and all of a sudden (despite knowing that she was struggling with her life in general), Andre isn't sure he really has a relationship with her, so he leaves. After thinking better of it, when he comes back, what will he find? An Evelyn who is ready to move forward, or something else entirely?

Character development: Considering that there are sequels, there was always going to be a slow development in Evelyn's separation from who she was with her husband and who she can be without him. Andre is part of that development, especially in the beginning, as it seemed like an vacation fling was just the thing to break her out of her funk. But the vacation fling has turned into something much more, and it's definitely helping her see the light, so to speak.

I would add that I feel like the "dark" label is a little misleading. But I think there is definitely a case for a TW re: domestic violence, and maybe that's where the dark designation comes from. Also, maybe it becomes dark(er) in the second/third books?

I absolutely love this series! I read it years ago and managed to loose the title and became ecstatic when I managed to find it.

Having read 2 out of the 3 books available in this series, I can honestly say it is a fantastic, encouraging read. Beware, however, that there may be some triggers regarding domestic abuse, both physical and psychological as well as adultery. This first book encompasses Evelyn's struggle with her separation and impending divorce from her nasty *OB of an ex who cheated, belittled, verbally/emotionally assaulted and continues to do so. After a said run-in with the ex, Evelyn books a spontaneous trip to Jamaica where she meets Andre, a fellow traveller.
From this point forward, we slowly begin to see a stronger, more confident, Evelyn emerge thanks to the relationship with Andre that starts in Jamaica and carries home. Although there are sexual scenes, they lack imagination, which is a shame because I think this would also be an opportunity for the author to continuing building Evelyn's self-esteem. Even saying that I encourage you to read the book because you will want to stand in Evelyn's corner and cheer her on. Ends in a cliffhanger.

This is my first time reading this author and what a book to start with! This is well written and is the first book of a series, so it does end with a cliffhanger. It has some very steamy scenes included and some dark topics, but it’s a book that is a page-turner.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
