TBH I've expected something MUCH better. Details, analysis, simulations, scenarios. On stablecoin adoption, on liquidity mgmt, on simplified payment models, on re-approaching regulations, on micropayments and the Internet-of-Value. I've expected input and insights from hands-on experts. OK, that were my expectations, but what did I get?
Some essays from "authorities" in PayTech industry which are mostly CEOs and consultants. Very generic, high level, not really revealing - but rather stating the obvious :( 40% of chapters were literally weasel-talk and word-salad, like they were playing bullshit bingo. That may be really revealing for someone who's stuck in a very "traditional" (outdated ...) banking organization (for instance), but not for anyone else ... ;/ Aaaah, and if you think you'll learn anything about as-is payments ecosystem(s) here, the answer is simple - you won't.
Payments tell more about people than what people could tell about their payments. We are what we pay for. The history of payments can be told in one of three narrative dimensions -
1. Removal of friction (think of Neander valley people trying to barter vs today’s automated bill pay; we mist strive to build MVP - Minimum Visible Product for payments); 2. Increased speed where urgent, increased trust where important (think about ACH vs. real time payments, where both share the same decoupled settlement process, the former is “batched” while latter is unitary - happening in microseconds); and 3. Disintermediation (removal of unnecessary intermediaries that add to friction, slow down speed without increasing marginal trust - e.g., closed-loop vs open-loop payments, fiat vs newer digital currencies etc)
This nifty book collects short write-up from about 50 experts that puts a strong spotlight on each of these dimensions. Was a good and educational read where I came out with many insights to use in my profession.
Excellent collection of short essays which detail the payments landscape across the world. A great read for anybody who's diving into the payments ecosystem and wants to develop a holistic grasp of new payments opportunities, existing solutions, regulatory challenges and more.
