I'm enjoying Mr. Akart's Asteroid trilogy. I'm a huge fan of the 1998 movies Deep Impact and Armageddon, so this subject is right up my alley, obviously. It's unpredictable and keeps me wanting to turn the page. I appreciate the pictures very much. The action is easy to follow, especially for someone like myself who often finds themselves rereading action scenes several times, lol. The main characters inspire empathy. Looking forward to starting Asteroid Diversion today.
I enjoyed the characters and the story line. There was some action which I expect to pick up in book 2. The technical information about NASA didn't really interest me but I can see how others would find it interesting. It was easy to skim over those details. I am definitely going to read book 2.
Asteroid: Discovery Book 1 Author Bobby Akart Narrator Christ Abernathy Listening time: 9 Hrs. 7 Min.
I always like to preface any reviews I give with this information. I am a 68 year old female who has been an avid reader since I was around 10 or 11 years old. I read primarily for pleasure and knowledge. I do a great amount of personal research in areas that interest me. Writing, Music, Art, Reading, Ancient Civilizations and History, Rocks, Minerals, Crystals, Alternative Spiritual Beliefs, Conspiracy Theories, UFOs, Maps, Pretty much everything interests me. I read everything I can get my hands on. I have always been a seeker, and I am the kind of person who needs to have answers. So I read, research, question and learn.

This review is for the Audiobook version of Asteroid: Discovery Book 1
This book/audiobook starts out at a nice pace and then quickly takes off and pulls the reader/listener along and all of a sudden by the end of the story line, you have not been an observer but feel you have been a character in the story yourself.
This is a book that deftly combines science fiction with what could very well be a headline in all the newspapers, and news networks, tomorrow.
I have become a person who enjoys end of the world as we know it scenarios. They make me think. They make me wonder how well I would do, or not do; compared with everyone else. They make me consider whether being a 'prepper' is something we all should be doing, rather than being entertained by the idea of doing.
Gunner Fox is a USAF Fighter pilot and Earth Scientist. He is a widower whose wife was an astronaut. He and his team are also available to do covert operations for the government on standby/call as needed basis.
The story line involves the discovery of an asteroid that is on a collision course with earth. A Near Earth Object that sort of snuck by being noticed until the time of impact is approximately 3 weeks to reach earth.
This is something I have considered for quite some time. I love cosmology and have since I was a small child. I remember finding the constellations in the night sky and being so proud of that fact when I was around 10 years of age.
This books entails what I would consider to be some of the best and worst in our modern society.
When the government gets involved in this, the first thing we see the politicians try to figure out is how they can make money off of mining this asteroid as it is hurtling it's way towards the planet. Sadly, I believe this is a scenario that would happen in real life. Also the fact that in the book the President and other members of the government, or "public servants" want to withhold this dire information from the people.
I was in turn, quite excited by the way this book unfolded, and yet in others I was appareled at the ease at which a member of Gunner Foxes "team" member coldly kills two people.
I don't want to go in to more detail as this books is build up in stages of progression and is quite enjoyable with an amazing amount of suspense.
This is book 1 of a trilogy and I do hope to be able to listen to the others once they are available.
Author Bobby Akart is an author whose work I was not familiar with until now. His writing style is very captivating. His characters are 3 dimensional, and very human, with all the shortcomings as well as strengths that most of us have. I look forward to reading/listening to more of his body of work.
Narrator Chris Abernathy is a voice actor I had never listened to before this audiobook and I really enjoyed his voice acting. He seemed to have a much greater command of the male voices and voice ranges, than of the female voices. I am not being disparaging towards him in any way, but simply stating a fact. Once I got caught up in the story itself, I was riveted until the very end of the book.
This is the kind of story that while it is very entertaining is also the kind that may keep you awake at night pondering the likelihood and probability of this very scenario. I hope you sleep well.
As to who would enjoy this book; I believe most people from the ages of 18 and above would enjoy it strictly as a novel. It is a very well written book with a superb plot and subplots as well.
It is a book that will make you think and then wonder about how safe we really are in our little part of the universe.
As the world population goes about their daily lives, they have no idea of the danger that is lurking in space. Unbeknownst to the innocent people, a killer is hurtling through space on a collision course with planet Earth.
As if asking the magic eight ball, Bobby Akart has once again hit on a topic that probably could come to pass. I don’t know of anything that could be scarier as an asteroid on a collision course with the Earth. The devastation from one this size could be the end once again of civilization as happened 66 million years ago. Asteroid Discovery starts our journey as the government discovers that an asteroid is hiding behind a once in a life time comet which is coming close to our planet. All is kept hush hush from the American people in order to find a way to save the Earth…or are they? Behind the scenes, deals are being made but are they the right ones? One man who is a maverick in his own right is called upon to answer the call of duty to his country. Enter Gunner Fox. Air Force major, pilot, son, friend, widow. My first impression of Gunner was that he was an arrogant, egotistical bastard, who thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then as I read along, I came to realize that he is a very complicated individual with a heavy heart. One that will in all likeliness never heal. Gunner is the main character in this trilogy and truthfully, not a bad guy. Along with Gunner we meet Cameron Mills aka Cam, who is a childhood friend and is on the quick-reaction team and also in the Air Force and works along with Major Fox. There is Staff Sergeant Barret King who is known as Bear because of his size who is also on the team with Gunner and Cam, Granville Fox, also called Pop, retired from the Air Force and is Gunner’s dad and last but certainly not least, is Howard. Howard is a Basset Hound who loves to sleep. You can’t help but like this group because of their love for each other and their friendship. All in all. This first book in the trilogy is one of excitement, action and learning and I loved every page I have read! There were many “hold on to your seat”, “don’t forget to breathe” and “Oh crap” moments along the way, along with so much action, heart breaking moments and Oh no…he didn’t just do that! I know everyone will enjoy this new journey that we have all embarked on with Bobby because he will make sure we do. Thank you Bobby for another exciting start to an adventure that I can’t wait to finish reading about!
Gunner Fix - I think of him as Bobby Akart. One in one - another book that you can't put down.
This book involved Gunner doing a test flight in a new sixth generation fighter. Well he really rested this fighter - enough to cause his fighter to start calling apart at the stratosphere. It was trying to see if it compared to the MiG-25 Russian fighter. When Gunner gets back from this his group is asked to go into Russia and take pictures of their space station. Cam, Bear and Gunner get to take a new fighter with folding wings. Letting land anyware. Landing them six clicks from the site. They make it there but must get closer. So they kill a bear and leave it in the area that the Russians are using to check and see if they have any uninitiated visitors. Brad kills the two Russians checking the bear. They take their car to get into the site. Cam goes in and takes pictures until they are told that have more trucks coming after them. They get away and make it back to the AV-280 Valor. Russians are see sending everything after them they can ask they can get back to the USA Ranger. Can't go that way to get out of Russia and China so head northeast to the Aleutian. Running out of gas. Now the world is in overload as an Asteroid is headed for us. President want to tell the U.S. What is going on but CNN beats him to it. Now US must beat Russia to the asteroid. NADA sends rocket on way to asteroid. Blows up. Gunner and Dad are at bar drinking beer and eating oysters. Man comes in and sits down next to Gunner. (Gunners wife was an astronaut who died on her way to the ISS.) Says hello to Gunner. Won't give his name or who he works for - by Gunner knows he works for the government. He has black shoes on with his casual pants and T-shirt. "Major your country is in a pickle." Gunner spits out his beer laughing. Gunner told him to leave. Then Gunner says wait - he sees something on TV that changes his mind. " you don't know what we want. " Gunner - "Doesn't matter, I'll do it.". I've left out a lot of the details of this book because you have to read iit!
Gunner Fox and his two best friends are an extremely talented and elite team. Very few know if it's existence. An asteroid is headed toward Earth. If impact occurs, the results will be devastating. Initially POTUS quickly is acting to put some type of plan into place to possibly alter its direction of lessen its impact. Plans are in motion in case it does crash into Earth. Civilians with knowledge of this possible catastrophe are quickly detained by the FED'S. Word does manage to surface on 60 Minutes. As predicted, panic ensues. Gunner and his team are dispatched to Russia to do a recon, surveillance of A Russian facility similar to NASA. Then Russian launches a manned spaceship to investigate and possibly alter or destroy the asteroids path toward Earth. America responds by quickly launching a manned space ship which explodes during the launch process. No one survives. A cliff hanger ending. A believable scenario and an extremely fast paced action thriller. Enjoyed immensely!
3.5 From other reviews I see a lot of people loved this book. Unfortunately, that wasn't me. I liked the fast paced action and it was obvious the author did his research. However, I found the first 100 pages slow and the whole story quite predictable. Plus the comradery between Gunner and his mates a bit hokey and strained. The last 150 or so pages were much more exciting and interesting. This bodes well for the next book in the series, which due to the last half of this book I plan on reading. So I'd give it 2 stars for the first part, 4 stars for the last 60%, so we'll compromise with 3 stars.
Well was hard to put this novel down. Gunner Fox and his team are up for any covert operation thrown their way. Cam and Bear his team will take black ops assignments with gusto. The world is faced with a asteroid that could destroy earth and only three weeks from hitting earth. Of course the Russians also want to be the first to reach the asteroid for its mining value before altering its course to save the world. A great read lots of twists and turns definitely reading book two.
But they appear to have an even worse future! This book, the first in the series by Bobby Akart, is written in such a manner that it feels absolutely accurate, that we are living this ominous horror. As always, the author gives us a taste of possible annihilation of the human race. Unsettling but a very compelling read. Cannot wait to see how it goes...
Mr Akart has woven together a story line that helps blend the Military and Science Fiction genres to make it broad enough for "Fans" of neither to delve into...Always keeping the focus on The People! The People that he brings to life in the characters make the story to me. I look forward to devouring the rest of this series!
This book was a fast read for me. Very good plot lines as some were just a recasting of characters from similar stories by different authors. Some people live and some people die, the usual cast of bad guys working for the government. It's just a good story line that never fails to garner attention to those who enjoy reading this genre of literature.
Bobby Akart has transported myself and his many other readers to North Korea, to Boston, to the darkness of a world hit by EMPs and Nuclear Weapons, but now he has gone to the heavens to rain down on the earth what could well be the final chapter in our history. This has happened before and the dinosaurs are proof that this can be the most devastating event that our world will ever see. A whole species of giant creatures were killed off by an asteroid. Is there anything that can be done to save our modern world from this same fate?
As the world edges closer to destruction the answer will be put in the hands of a special kind of man. One who fears nothing and will do whatever it takes to save mankind, but can he succeed? Major Gunner Fox is that man, with his team of exceptional Special Operators he must risk everything to save mankind.
Bobby Akart never leaves you wanting for action, from the very beginning Bobby sends Gunner on a test flight that should be smooth and easy, just a shake out test of a new supper powerful fighter jet, but Gunner decides it is time to put the ship to the ultimate test. Gunner may have been prepared for the test but the F/A XX fighter jet wasn’t. The excitement only gets better with each page.
The small town of Washington GA is one of the first places that realizes what is coming, thanks to Sparky Newsome, the local publisher of The Epigraph newspaper and Jackie Holcomb’s discovery of what was hidden behind Comet Oort the world gets it first look at what could send us back to a time when no man walked the earth.
Bobby takes us to Russia with Gunner, Bear, aptly named for his huge build and one of Gunner’s two best friends and Cam his other best friend who both were part of his special operations team to find out what the Russians plans were in this race for space either to save our world or get rich at the expense of mankind.
The depth of his research is unbelievable and not only excites but educates you. Needles to say the action doesn’t stop either and as always, Mr. Akart leaves you with another major cliff hanger as he pulls his adventure stories right out of the headlines!
Bobby Akart has a tremendous talent for using his research to create tales of possibilities that will scare your socks off! I love every book I've read that he has written and I highly recommend them all. I can hardly wait to read book 2 in this series.
Populated with protagonists you would want as friends. Informative on space technology. Realistic and exciting plots and dilemmas. You can live vicariously through Bobby Hart thrillers. Enjoy places you have never visited.
A high school senior discovered a an asteroid hidden in the trail of a comet that is headed for impact with earth. The asteroid is a planet killer and the race is on to find solutions.
Bobby Akart has delivered another exciting story with characters you'd want for friends. The book is fast moving. Before I realized it I had reached the end. The book does have a cliffhanger and must be read in order.
Another excellent science thriller by Bobby Akart!
Another excellent science thriller by Bobby Akart! If you enjoy faced passed science based fiction taken from possible catastrophes of today then you should really enjoy this series.
….which we seem to be short of in reality. Warms my heart to read about good people. Build up is good, but I thought it would end in this book. Keep writing Bobby!
this was not a good book. Hero (Gunner Fox) lives on an island off coast. brings together a team. NASA rocket to intercept blows up. ends with guy volunteering to help somemore. yawn.
