Teach magic, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. Yeah, well, they’re dirty rotten liars. When I told Tennessee we needed to have more schools than just Edenburg I thought they’d assign appropriate people to the task. Ya know, like actual adults. Not a sixteen year old who still has to finish high school herself. But then Tennessee became Coven Leader, and my great idea came back to bite me in the ass. Sure, the Majors and Minors of Manhattan were technically in charge and they’d brought in fantastic witches to teach.....however our fearless, nonhuman Leader wanted Deacon and I to oversee everything. I wanted to be honored that he trusted us that much....but I barely knew how to use my own magic, how was I supposed to run an entire magical academy - without destroying the city or getting anyone killed? I didn’t know but I was about to find out. The City Witch is the first in a series of novellas that are companions to The Academy Magic Series .
I loved this brief interlude before The Wild Witch. It's a little slower than the rest of the series action-wise, but I enjoyed the change of pace. It was nice to see a more practical side of their lives brought forward. If you haven't read the other books set in this world, don't start here. It would make little to no sense, since there isn't a great deal of rehashing or explanation of the world. The series all intersect and are complexly interwoven and it's entirely addicting. The new character POVs surprised me in the best of ways. Can't wait to see where it takes off!
I do have to say every book in the series so far really needs some major editing. There were a lot of grammar and spelling errors. That being said I really love this series. I oopsed and read Bettina's books first. It wasn't too confusing but made a lot more sense after reading Tegan's books. Even with editing issues, it didn't take away from the story lines. I really wish Emerson's books were a little longer though. This is a must series to read!!!
I so loved reading this novella. Deacon and Emersyn are perfect for each other. Chandelle has done an outstanding job with this novella. The storyline has it's own plot plus runs along with The Coven: Academy Magic series. I love how this novella helps fill the void between books. I am extremely hopeful that Chandelle will keep this novella series going. •••••• I highly recommend this book/series! •••••• ~~ I have Kindle Unlimited, and I used that service to read this book. ~~
So, as I said before, in the reviews of all the other related books, due to BIPOC erasure and the fact that the author thought the genocide of a whole ass indigenous tribe was an acceptable plot point, I’m not giving more than one star.
Note: All these books could have been so much better with BIPOC characters. Could have included indigenous Shamans, Latin American Santería and African “voodoo” which have all been demonized by white people. This is about magic, after all. And, white people thought BIPOC spirituality was dark magic.
Lovely expansion to the series Loved a look into the side activities of the Coven. D and em are my favourites so I was excited to get into this. Loved seeing more of the magic world and loved seeing old characters again! And that ending... Ahhh! Can't wait for the next Coven book! Wish it was longer and I wish we got to see more of deacon and em's relationship. But I loved it nonetheless! I get a feeling we'll see more in the next coven books. Ps. Happy birthday Chandelle
This is another winner. I love this author and her different paranormal characters and her great imagination and storylines. She writes a great series of witches and powers that is entertaining to read. I highly recommend all her books to everyone who loves cozy mysteries and paranormal characters. Diana Romano
Another amazing story. Each book just draws you deeper and deeper into the world of the Coven and the other arcane characters that make up their world. I enjoyed reading more about our Devil and Empress cards and the school that they want to get started. I can't wait for more. This is a must read
It was so good to read about Deacon and Emerosyne again, love them and what they did opening the new school, very nice how everything just collided with other book, must read for sure
Emerson and Deacon start the School of Magic Academy in New York City. The shifters want to come ,too. There's not enough trained witches to defend against the demons. But there is also trouble in the Old Lands where Tegan, Tenn, Cooper and the other Cards are.
These books keep getting better and better! They definitely keep you on your toes! I’m a little sad because I only have one book left and then I’ve got to wait for Saffie’s story!
I was looking for a fun magical novella and this book's summary sounded promising. The first four chapters were page turners but then around chapter seven it started to slow down in its delivery. There are some authors who do a fine job with telling and not showing but this author is not one of them. Her telling and not showing took away from the vision of the book. As it is a magical book, I was expecting more showing throughout the novella. The author tells what's occurring then gives you an example of the situation. It really could have been a good read but the delivery was not inviting enough for me to have a connection toward any of the characters. What also took away from the book was telling me that the main character or another character cursed. I would have preferred to read the word or a similar word rather than, " I cursed... " in the middle of an action scene. The book didn't flow and at times halted in its delivery leaving no room for the imagination.

This novella doesn't feel as tightly plotted as LaVaun's others. The "quest" is to set up the New York school, and that gets done. There's just not much conflict here. This might have been better as a "freebie" for subscribers. If SOMA is going to have its own series, we will need to get to know more kids that go there and have some central conflict for the school.
I have it 5 stars anyway (I got it free through Kindle Unlimited) because the characterization is so good. It's nice to see what Emersyn and Deacon are up to. I've read all LaVaugn's other books and intend to continue.
I like these novellas. I think it's cute that Deacon's side of his NY life are slowly getting their own spotlight and HEA. I enjoy Em and Deacon is always hilarious, so seeing them with their own mini series makes me see them in a different light, a better one. More depth and all.
I'm super excited for the school to be a success and I'm glad they thought of it for the children unable to defend themselves. Not everyone has greatness thrust upon them.
This Academy trope checks off Em's need to go deeper with Deacon and his life and I'm curious as to where it's leading with the school. More Academy reads? Different characters?
This book had been so far my #1 favorite so far in this epic series!!! There so many new animals! I'm so happy the New York witches got there own school and the shifters also get to join!!!! Omigoddess!!! There's Pegasi oh flinging horses there my all time favorite mythical creatures!!!! I now love this book 20x more now!!! This series gets better and better but that ending holy fecking shit Tegan never takes that off what the flying feck is going on!?!?!? She better be okay! Emersyn better go save her or something!!!
There is a huge cliffhanger, but the series is complete. Can't wait to get started on the next one. In this book the school is up and getting started, part of the coven is on the Old lands and Eden is under attack from Joseph. You'd need to read Bettinas story off more background in Joseph situation. This book is centered pretty evenly on Emersyn and Caroline. We get entries from Noah and Deacon as well, but mostly the other two. I'm still not sold on Caroline. Even in her apology she made excuses. Hopeful the she has actually changed.
This was another break in the constant demon fighting that focused on the building of the first satellite school for witches. Relationships are mended, and new ones are forged. Everything seems to be going OK, aside from Jonathan attacking Eden, until Emersyn and Decan receive a distress call. When they ask for help, the only response they get is Tegan's leather jacket! I will be continuing on to the next book to see just how much trouble the Coven members who entered Eden are in. I am also interested in seeing if Noah and Caroline will play a bigger role in this series.
Tennessee sends Deacon and Emersyn to New York to open a school to teach magic usets. After an attack by demons it becomes necessary to train mere mortals to fight the many demons that came through the rift left when the twins closed a time warp left from Salem. Now the clean up continues. Demons and darkness attacks Eden and the witches protecting the world.
I love every bit of this story I can get my hands on. Having read every other book Chandelle has written, I couldn’t wait to read this new novella. It didn’t disappoint either, my only complaint is for the ending... because it doesn’t leave anything resolved... and now I have to wait sixish weeks before I’ll be able to think about The Coven without freaking out. Thanks Chandelle... just thanks🤦🏼♀️
A battle against demons in Times Square brings a new kind of school..
During a Gala to honor Coven members Deacon, the Devil, and Emersyn, the Empress, demons attack there as well as in Times Square. After the battle Emersyn realizes the the civilian witches are correct they need to be trained to fight demons. Now her and Deacon are in the process of setting up a school and helping Eden when needed.
What can I say. Another book in the continuing story of the Coven. Opening the School of Magical Arts and then leaving us waiting impatiently for next book to see what happens. I am totally hooked on these books. I love the characters and the exciting story lines.
I call it a side story because it may not be vital to the main storyline, yet you get great little period of events for 2 of the main characters and a few of the more prevalent secondary characters. You also get to see a few things addressed that have been mentioned in the main story line. I eagerly await each new story by this author!!
Just seemed like I started to read this story and then this book was over. I am now stuck in two different series of the same Coven. Waiting for the next book to published. I am hooked on this Coven series from the first book up until our new Ice magic series gets written and our City Witch series moves on and both get written. What a story author Chandelle LaVaun Is and now I am just waiting for more books to be published.
Follow along as Emerson and deacon and Deaconess family set up the new school of magical arts in New York. And novella story that takes place in the middle of the Academy magic series. Fills in some blanks add some new characters and expense and a few others. Check it out
This is an insight on SOMA. The why it came to be and the people that worked to get it up and going. You also will read about Caroline. You get to know her a little bit more. I do say, she is misunderstood and she really is a lovable person. I can’t wait for more!!
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Chandelle writes books but they are so much more than that. Her books pull you in and you become part of the story yourself. They are just that real. I absolutely love her writing and all of her books. It's hard to wait until the next book in the series.
The City Witch (The Coven: School of Magical Arts Novella Book 1)
😳 OMG 😳 she has definitely done it again!! Love ❤️ , 💕 , 💗 the world she created in this series I’ve read them all & I can’t wait for the next one .. I can’t seem to put any of her books down.... I definitely recommend this book/series...
I have not stopped reading since the first series of the coven stories began. I read a book every two to three days because it holds my attention so well. But I do have to say this one has been slower. Not bad just less action then before. Very nice how the author revisits every event that wasn’t explained in the last series. :)
A new school, new town and more than enough headaches.Alot of the Coven remained in Eden and some are at the new school.Cooper and some of the Coven are lost in the Old Lands. His sister was awoken by a terrible dream .Gotta read the next book to see what happens.
Finally, The Coven is looking to open more schools for arcana, closer to other students. The hope is that more students will attend if they are closer to home. But this school will be a little different, shifters will be able to attend and hopefully integrate with the arcana. Will this first be a success? Read this great story to find out!
