The Clockwork Witch

How do I explain my children? They are Marionettes but so much more... I created them with a knowledge of gears, steam, and magic. As you can imagine such a skill set doesn't go over kindly with normal people. Add that to the typical high brow of Victorian Society and it's a perfectly volatile situation. The result of which is my untimely demise and a deal with Death. My children mean the world to me and though society may never look at them kindly I will always do everything in my power to protect them and keep them pure of human defects. I will stand in the way of human hatred and supernatural foe if it means their safety and I may well have to.

"The Clockwork Witch" is a different kind of steampunk book than I usually read. I usually stick to the steampunk romance side of the steampunk genre but this was a good change for me. I decided to compare it to other books I've read in the genre. Well, my fellow readers, the only thing I could really compare other than locations is automatons. I could think of two other authors who had automatons in their books. First is Gail Carriger who's automatons run on a track instead of walking around free and are very basic. (Examples of her books, The Finishing School Series.) Second, and the final author is Nancy Campell Allen in her retelling of fairytales with a steampunk twist. In her books, they are free-roaming like Mackenzie's but they are much less complex and have not as much emotion as hers do. But overall it's a good add on to the steampunk genre.

I absolutely LOVED Pocket! He was such an amazing character and was one of my favorites. Dunkel who is Pocket's opposite was another one of my favorites. The comparison between them is so interesting but I won't spoil that for you.

Overall this book was a good one and I enjoyed it a lot. With my rating, I would give it a 3.5 instead of a complete 4-star rating as I didn't feel it was a four but better than a three for me. I would recommend this to people who are looking for a new book and one in the steampunk genre.

I tried to like this. I really did. But I just couldn't get behind it. Everything was to impossible and abrupt. I didn't find myself falling in love with the characters. There were too many unfinished plots and unconnected dots. I think the story has potential and with some more practice and time the author will improve. For one of the first novels it isn't so bad and the author has potential.
