More all ages comedy from the creator of Azumanga Daioh. Yotsuba hasn't gotten much smarter, and her neighbors still haven't gotten used to this wacky tike's exploits. A truly heartwarming comedy that will make you laugh out loud!
Kiyohiko Azuma (東清彦 or あずまきよひこ Azuma Kiyohiko) is a Japanese manga author and artist. His most well-known work is Azumanga Daioh. His current series is Yotsuba&!, which is serialized monthly in Dengeki Daioh magazine.
More of the same with this irrepressible little five year old girl Yotsuba (four leaf clover), with the four green pigtails, but that turns out to be a good thing. Much manga objectifies girls and women. Much manga features (good natured) fighting. This one has none of that. It's about a girl, her family and neighbors and her discovery of her world. Each chapter has a topic of discovery, and this volume features Yotsuba drawing (and a chapter on drawing on Dad while sleeping), the uselessness of revenge, cake, pools, frogs and so on. For kids, sure, but really is for all ages.
To keep it off the strictly 5 year old level we get age appropriate interactions between the neighbors, like crushes, practical jokes. Everyone is so nice! And it's not really sappy. It's good clean fun (especially after my reading horror manga. . . )
It is very, very hard to not be completely charmed by this series. If you can read this and not laugh or at least smile, you probably don't like Christmas or puppy dogs, either. Jerk.
Yotsuba’s character is done so well. She’s funny all while being realistic. I remember doing quite a few of these things (or similar things) when I was around her age. It’s really remarkable how well her character was created.
Feels great to read and comprehend 90% of this without a dictionary. The pure positivity of Yotsuba has really rubbed off on the enthusiasm I feel as my Japanese ability progresses.
While not as good as the first volume it's still super adorable.
This time our little girl goes on fun adventures such as dressing up as a gangsta and going after all the people she knows after watching a gangster movie. Instead of a real gun she uses water gun. Too cute. Then we also have a funny as hell one where the group goes to the pool and nobody can swim except Yotsuba.
4 stars 。・:*˚:✧。 this manga is so funny omg the authors sense of humour is top tier. I have been wanting to read this vol for so long but it was $30 aud physically so I decided to read it online instead. Can’t wait to read more of the volumes in this series. It’s such a fun slice of life story!
This is an adorable slice-of-life manga about a young girl named Yotsuba. She has just moved to a new town, and we follow her on her adventures are she gets to know her new home, new neighbors, and gets to know more about life. It is sweet, fun, and full of laughs. I think everyone should give this series a try.
Seven stories (scenes, really) follow a 5-year old named Yotsuba and the people around her. The stories are realistic and enjoyable. The situations are everyday, such as going to the pool, going to a cake shop, and bringing home a frog, but they are exceptionally well-done and very entertaining. Sometimes the emotional-tug-of-the-heartstring denouement hinges on someone older than Yotsuba, so a lot goes on even though the Japanese is simple. I didn't understand everything, but I was able to relax and go with the flow. Volume 1 wasn't at the store the day I bought this, but I got volume 1 today!
5 Years Later
The worst thing about reading this 5 years later is that I know more kanji but my eyes aren't able to see as clearly and sometimes they are a blur I can tell from context and sometimes they aren't. I suppose I need reading glasses...
Comedy appropriate for all ages. I laughed really hard at some of the stories. I love the kids' innocence and curiosity towards discovering their surroundings and the world of adults. I love how the interaction with children has an impact on the adults, often reminding them to be more honest with themselves. And I love Jumbo.
If I could give this any more stars I would. A incredible journey that will make you cry, laugh, and maybe even pass out from its immense impact on society. I especially enjoyed the part in chapter #09, vengeance, when Yotsuba proclaimed, “it’s Yotsuban time” and Yotsuba’d all over the place.
Buku kedua. Saya jadi berpikir setelah membaca review beberapa teman.
Great book! its hilarious, and cute. the book which is part of a series, is about a young girl most likely at the age of five or six, is exploring her neighboorhood. ists just short stories about random topic, and it doesnt have a seriously problem. the book's purpose is to make the reader laugh, and all i can say is mission accomplished!
Another adorable and fun volume! I can’t wait to read the next one. I’m enjoying this slice of life series more than I thought I would! It’s so sweet and wholesome.
Yotsuba is an adventurous, green-haired and wide-eyed five-year-old girl moving into a new town with her father. Her energy is off the charts and her curiosity about anything and everything is never satisfied. The daily adventures of Yotsuba and her neighbors turned best pals tackle every subject imaginable from learning to ride bikes, selling flowers, racing at the beach and finding ways to battle against environmental pollution; all the while driving each other crazy and learning to love each others company.
I've been dealing with a lot of stress and depression in my personal life lately, so I thought it would be a nice change of pace to read something funny, cute and wholesome for a change. I went into this series expecting it to be corny or cringeworthy compared to what I'm used to, but was surprised by how genuinely charming, hilarious and heartwarming it is. You can tell the author has a lot of experience being a parent as he captures all the specific mannerisms, speech patterns and chaotic behavior of curious little kids better than most stories I've ever watched or read. Sometimes she's funny and sweet, sometimes she's bratty and annoying, sometimes she's an incoherent babbler that fascinates everyone around her with her insanely creative ideas and the unpredictably wacky shenanigans she constantly cooks up.
All the characters are lovable, each chapter is a fun self-contained story and it has the perfect balance of comedy, adventure and wholesome familial bonding. Yotsuba is a wonderful character. Her mischievous curiosity and her chaotic positive energy are dangerously infectious, both to the reader and to everyone's lives she becomes a part of. I definitely felt cheered up every time I read a chapter from this series and was surprised to find myself constantly smiling and laughing. I think it's impossible to read this manga and not feel uplifted in one way or another.

I really shouldn't compare it to Nichijou, but it is different in two ways: the main protagonist is much younger, and it can't shake the tinge of lecherousness that the father and his friend Jumbo manage to tickle out now and again.
Listen, im no ignoramus. I know storks bring babies, but it's really weird that this story about a pre-schooler who toddles around the world on amusing adventures and quirky behaviors is often overshadowed by her adopted father.
See, I can't even remember what moment in the previous book gave me this feeling of, I can't call it fanservice because it's not, it just lecherousness. In this one however, it's clear. When the dad gets tickets to a water park, his friend Jumbo asks Yotsuba to invite the eldest daughter to come with them. I'm assuming that Jumbo and the dad are in their twenties and the girl, Asagi is at least 18 or 19, but the fact that Jumbo refers to Asagi as the a friend of Yotsuba, a toddler, really rubbed me the wrong way.
Thankfully Asagi wasn't able to come, her younger sister (a teen) comes instead and is frequently lumped in with the adults, further proving my suspicion that she's older, and they're not that old, but that feeling of lechery remains.
How is it that the feeling can't be shaken? It bothers me and ultimately detracts from my enjoyment of this series and I'm not sure I want to continue because of it.
Also, despite it not being a chronological or Classic Story, theres a lack of continuity that Nichijou manages. Maybe it's because we don't see any growth for the characters? Hmm.
As usual, Yotsuba never fails to make me laugh! Her antics are fun and remind me that kids can be so innocent, yet wily. It also reminded me that sometimes you can't always sugarcoat things for kids because it doesn't always work. Granted, there are times when you can be gentle (for example: "That drawing stinks!" isn't always what you should say to a kid. They're still learning!) and still give them instruction.
I loved reading about Yotsuba, the girls next door, and Jumbo. They're a huge family of sorts and it's nice to see people coming together and watching out for one another. As always, it's a nice quick read and light enough for when you're in a crappy mood. I really needed it this week! I see binge reading in my future!
I get the feeling like Azuma is laying the groundwork for a much larger narrative than the simple "slice of life" format of the first two volumes. I'm not sure how I feel about that. As long as we don't have to suffer through some kind of awkward romantic subplot or "Yotsuba" is actually an alien or something, I'm sure it will be fine.
⭐3.5 Picked up three volumes from the library today, so expect to see a lot of Yotsuba&! for the next days.
It's so hard to rate a story like this, because there is not really a plot, just vibes (which is what I wanted). It's really cute and sweet and I really enjoy reading it. This is the type of book I can pick up and just space out while reading.
More adorable stories about a green-haired girl with an amazingly positive and wide-eyed perspective on the world. The “vengeance” chapter was my favorite. So funny! Things get a little intense during the chapter about the frog. But it’s all dialed back in the next chapter where Asagi gives souvenirs from her vacation to her mother and sisters. And yes, she has one for Yotsuba too.
Geschafft!
