The Fairweather Sister Series contains three madcap Regency romantic novels: Penelope, Seeking Philbert Woodbead and Dorothy. Penelope: Leaving behind the rural charms of Finnshire, Miss Penelope Fairweather arrives in London with hope in her heart and a dream in her eye. The dowager, no less, has invited her for a season in London, where she will attempt to catch a husband. Seeking Philbert Woodbead: Celine hurtles off to London to help the duchess run the Blackthorne Mansion and to discover the whereabouts of her lost love Philbert Woodbead. Dorothy: Circumstances force Dorothy May Fairweather to marry Lord William Edmund Huxley, the man her best friend is in love with and the Duke’s arch enemy. With her one foolish mistake, Dorothy manages to vex all those that mean the most to her.
Anya Wylde lives in Ireland along with her husband and a fat French poodle (now on a diet). She can cook a mean curry, and her idea of exercise is occasionally stretching her toes. She holds a degree in English literature and adores reading and writing.
Okay, I need to stop laughing long enough to type this review. I decided to read Penelope because I have read this author's work before and found it well-written lighthearted entertainment. In my opinion, it is safe to say that she surpassed her other effort with this new tantalizing Regency Romp trilogy featuring the madcap heroines known as the Fairweather Sisters that would rival some of the best in the light historical romance genre.
Penelope comes up to London and takes the town by storm first, then Celine, and then Dorothy. Each has their own zany, bumbling ways of setting events into motion and befuddling the men who come to love them.
The light-hearted stories are sheer entertainment, but have a sweetness and charm to them behind all the crazy moments. Those who enjoy Regency Romantic Comedy should definitely give these a go.
I got to Chapter 22 and then gave up. Penelope has been given the opportunity to come to London for a season. She's being sponsored by a dowager duchess, a school friend of her mother's. She comes with her pet goat and is constantly insulted by her host, the Duke. Penelope is an idiot, the Duke is an ass and the story is an embarrassment.
First I have to say that the series was a bit of a struggle to complete for me, but the author's writing did improve so that the final book was good. Because it is a series and involves some of the previous characters it helps to read the others. However, book one was so outrageously silly and bizarre that I really had to push through to get through hoping that it would get better. She has a bit of humorous flair that has worked for other authors like the Stephanie Plum series but doesn't have the delivery down so it just left me cringing and frustrated. Her final book in the series, she didn't aim for slapstick and the story was an enjoyable romance. I think she may improve with better material and better editors also. There are still many writing flaws. Also, I absolutely cannot stand using learnt instead of learned which was used consistently. These are lords and ladies of the ton. I guarantee that they never said that ever. I do recommend that the author read some of the more successful authors like Nora Roberts to understand what should and should not be done regarding humor and romance together.
This was definitely a "could not put down" type book. Plus, I laughed outrageously in a couple of places, so perhaps be warned, don't read some place that others will think you mad, when you rolling around in hilarious laughter. Basic story, a young country girl is presented to society, through a contact of her late mother. To say she was country bumpkin, would be overstating her deportment and manners. She charms almost all she comes in contact with, except the son of the woman sponsoring her. So, you need to read the author's rendition of the tale, to really enjoy this entertaining story.
#2 Seeking Philbert Woodbead
I must admit this book did not engage my attention the same as "Penelope", it just seemed strung out to get to the dramatic part. Anyway, it was amusing, but seemed a bit predictable.
#3 Dorothy
The youngest of the three Fairweather Sisters has her story told. It isn't as straight forward, as falling in love, and having that man marry her. No, it is a lot more complicated than that! However, it is an enticing tale, and has few interesting parts, that may elicit some chuckles from the reader. Yes, again I enjoyed this story.
These Fairweather sisters are hilarious. Definitely not the shy, retiring type that you might come to expect from the ladies during this period of time. Penelope, Celine and Dorothy are adorable and outrageous. There's nothing one wouldn't do for the other. But, some of the scenarios are a little bit hard to believe. A pet goat that sleeps with you and is accepted within the household?? Come on now! I will go with some of the outrageous things these sisters do, but the goat story is a little hard to believe. But, you can't help but love these girls. They are not setting out to catch the most handsome, richest titled man that's available. They just want to find someone to love and love them back. Their adventures are entertaining to read and I got through the three books pretty easily. If you want to read stories about ladies that are "a little different" and don't hold anything back, I would definitely recommend this boxed set.
I thought this would be a fun little romp. I love it when the main character is silly and gets herself into all kinds of messes. But the leading man is not supposed to be an idiot. This one was big time and I could not read any more especially after this paragraph.
"He glared at her and she did not notice. He straightened and waved and got no response. He hopped from foot to foot trying to attract her attention as silently as possible. When that didn’t help either, he wriggled his buttocks and her eyes wriggled with it. He gave up. He would have to deal with her later. Currently his attention was urgently required elsewhere. He stooped once more to look through the keyhole"
Apparently he is a duke that allows a maid who is probably mentally and capable of thought to stare at his butt for quite a while. And instead of telling her to get back to work he just dances around and wiggles his butt. It was so dumb.
Within this set of three books, I liked the first one the best. Although the duke in Penelope's story was pretty unlikable, still the writing and story contained some really humorous scenes that indeed prompted me to laugh out loud.
The other two books fell flat and I really didn't enjoy them and had to push myself to finish the stories.
Content 411: There is some mild swearing and some kissing, but there is no explicit sexual content.
What a great way to get to know an author's style and sense of humor! This collection was wonderful, in part because of the recurring characters: its a family of five sisters, their spouses, relatives, friends, and acquaintances. The third book has a wonderful story line, but I was ready to get rid of Mr Woodbead long before book three. I still recommend the set and this fun author!
I wanted to give this series five stars. While the stories are somewhat formulaic, the prose is perfectly befitting of a conversational, humorous tone that makes it stand apart from most of the genre.
But I couldn't give it five stars with all the punctuation errors and word misuse. I only noted 17, but didn't want to spend my hours copyediting a book that should not have been released with these errors.
I read all three of these quirky books in a weeks time. Easy to read, somewhat predictable, but worth it to me due to the amount of humor. There were times while reading that I was laughing out loud. They are romance books with all the things you expect from romance books. I enjoyed them for what they were. Light, easy to read, and funny. AND THAT GOAT (read the books.. too funny). Would be great for a beach read. PG rating.
Love concurs all! Love these stories and all the characters!
Love the story line in these books! The characters are great and very fascinating! You have love, laughter, family and happily ever after! The sweet country girls come to town and ends up loving aristocratic gentleman that fall Marie head over heels for these sisters!!!
These books were great. Each sister is uniquely madcap. The situations they get into are at first dangerous and then comically ludicrous. They meet people that the rich would never meet in reality, and come out smelling like roses. They are so naive, yet turn the tables on the rich and royal. Highly recommend.
A seriously whacky read. If the Regency era want to take themselves seriously, then this story will bring them to their knees. The author has a wicked sense of humor and brings it full tilt into her stories. Whimsical, fanciful, absurd and downright farcical situations and characters that can only make you laugh out loud. Well done Anya, keep up the good writing.
Each book truly stands alone. The first two are exceptionally hilarious, genuine fiction but the last, though different has a distinct beauty. I can actually see the first two as movies, quite easily translatable. The greatest achievement of the author is that none of the tales are clones of the other only featuring a change of names. Deserving of 6 stars.
The Fairweather Sisters Series is a fun read. It isn’t serious, but is predictable. It fun to see how the author arrives at the conclusion you know if coming. It’s humorous and so different from many of this type of novel. It’s seems the Sisters all marry men who are strong men. Fun read!
All three books are amazing. Penelope's antiques, Celine's comedy, Dorothy's menace and the duke, George and Huxley are all unique characters not forgetting the falcon and pirates along with Adair.
Wonderful !! Great love stories all three of them. They had me laughing out loud, funny, funny, funny stories. Read and enjoy you won't regret it. Thank you Anya for a fun series!😂
All these stories just got sillier and sillier. They almost did not make sense. I gave it a 3 star because it was a clean read and perhaps there are those out there that like clean silly read. I pretty much rushed through to get it over
I've read these books as separate novels already. I remember liking them quite well. However, it must have been the novelty of reading this kind of book. I decided to reread them as I have the omnibus and I did not enjoy it as much as the last time. Perhaps, it is because I am older.
3.5 star read. I really enjoyed the books about Penelope & Celine. The final book about Dorothy I didn't care for as much. However the first two books while ridiculous they were also fun & made me laugh.
I think I lost brain cells reading these books. I wanted to stop but I thought they will get better. Idiotic scenes, characters. How can an author some up with this kind of drivel and a publisher publish the books.
Enjoyed the adventures of the Fairweather sisters. Fast moving, full of interesting events. Lots of interesting characters. Keeps the reader guessing even though you know the lady wins in the end.
I liked the first story but couldn’t continue onto the other two stories. It didn’t historically accurate and it was a bit far fetched. Not to mention that the hero in the first story was quite moody.
Anya writes an excellent satire of the regency novel. I found Mr. Philbert a bit tiresome and book 2 got out of hand on the side of ridiculous but all in all, an enjoyable read.
