The Clockwork Chimera #1–5

The Clockwork Chimera Series

Rate this book
As if nearly blowing up on her way to Earth wasn't bad enough, Daisy had a whole mess of other trouble on her plate. Big trouble. And she was going to clean it off if it was the last thing she'd do... which it was looking like it very well might be.

Daisy had a simple rule for space travel. Don't blow up. So far she'd been managing to abide by that, but something was very much not right.

With the powerful AI supercomputer guiding the craft beginning to show some disconcerting quirks of its own, and its unsettling cyborg assistant nosing into her affairs, Daisy’s unease was rapidly growing, as was her bigotry toward artificially intelligent beings. Add to the mix a crew of mechanically-enhanced humans, any one of whom she suspected might not be what they seemed, and Daisy found herself with a sense of pending dread tickling the periphery of her mind.

Something was very much not right––she could feel it in her bones. The tricky part now was going to be overcoming her biases and figuring out what the threat was, before it could manifest from a mere sinking feeling in her gut into a potentially deadly reality.

Only things were far different and far worse than she could ever have imagined, forcing her to repeatedly adjust and overcome a reality that turned out to be far from what it had originally seemed.

The complete series set of all five of the Clockwork Chimera books:

1. Daisy's Run
2. Pushing Daisy
3. Daisy's Gambit
4. Chasing Daisy
5. Daisy's War

A space opera adventure featuring damaged spaceships, rogue artificial intelligence, homicidal cyborgs, mechanically-enhanced humans, genetic engineering, nanotech, and, of course, bloodthirsty aliens.

I didn't finish this series. When the main character jumps in bed with someone they have only known for a few minutes by the end of the first chapter, I find that it is not the type of book I want to read.

Such a good story

This is one of those series you want to know how it ends, but you enjoy the character's and great writing so much you want it to just keep on going. Evil overlords, high tech AIs, brave friends and great food - this series has it all. Scott Baron has done a great job with this story, so take a chance and join Daisy in her epic adventure.

Prequel?

My word this set of stories is incredible. A massive story that links to Scott Barons other series Bad Luck Charlie. Looking forward to reading more from Scott.

Highly recommend his books.

Book 1 - 3*, Book 2 - 4*, Book 3 - 5*, Book 4 - 5*, Book 5 - 5*, OVERALL - 5*

I love this series! As part of a special deal, I received Books Two and Three when I purchased Book One. After a wee sticky patch with number one, I just had to read number two, then three, then...you get the jist. I bought numbers four and five as I enjoyed the realistic (and flawed) characterisations, the author's easy to read and flowing writing, and the unusual scenarios and stories. Each book grew in intensity on the one before it. Daisy becomes a strong, kicka$$ character. As she needs to be. The world is in danger.

I URGE you to read my original reviews, and you'll see just how quickly I grew to love these people, was pulled into the action and adventure, and just f l e w through the pages. WONDERFUL!

Book 3 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-...

I chose to voluntarily read and honestly review these books. All opinions are my own.

The Good, the OK, and the Ugly

The good:
1.It's fun. It moves right along, characters are well developed, and it follows one character that is easily identifiable as the hero.
2. There are instances of genius, such as AIs with skin, a human dual-processing brain with two people living inside, a living space-ship, aliens that seem like enemy but then turn out to be oppressed and become allies and friends. The conflict of how a humans will come to accept AI. HOWEVER, I'm sure Baron hoped the reader would stick with the slow pace of the first timeline (I almost quit reading at that point) because it is a surprise to have it repeated. In fact, it's like Baron enjoyed writing that section of the saga the most. It seemed like he was having fun. That's good!

The OK:
1.There are assumptions about timelines such as they merge back together if they get out of sync. That's OK because nobody really knows but there are many other Sci/Fi stories that set the bar at infinite simultaneous timelines that this assumption seems outmoded.
2. The main characters are all women. That's OK, women are as capable as men, but for me (a male), it makes it difficult to identify with the main characters. Indeed, it sometimes seems a "forced" role reversal of something like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, to which there are multiple references, simply for the sake of role reversal and could be a better balance. Maybe young girls will love this.

The ugly:
1. It is written on a fifth grade reading level about Middle School girls in very responsible roles.
2. There are short periods of pretty good action with long periods of teen humor and small-talk. Boring. It's as if the publisher required a certain length, so chit-chat is added as filler.

Over all it is a fun story and does work.

I would have given this 5 stars if I hadn’t tried to finish the last book. Up to that point it had been a romp with spaceships, aliens, AIs and so much else in the way of human interaction. Daisy is non-stop action who always wants to try more and do more. The battle to free earth from alien invasion was well presented although, as many novels do, it ignored the world outside what was the US except for a token mention of Europe and Sydney. All aliens know that LA is where invasions start apparently. Not that everything was tied up with a bow at the end of the 4th novel, because there was lots more to develop but the fifth was not what I wanted. The author’s verbosity got control and my English composition teacher’s hand itched to edit. Why one adjective when you can use five? Let’s have everyone repeat things and say “that’s cool!”. I just started fast forwarding to see if anything important happened and eventually gave up. Daisy is a lot of fun and the beginning novels lead seamlessly from one to the next. I do have a couple of questions that were not answered but I’m no going to voice them in case they are answered elsewhere.

Great fun.

What a wonderful story filled with action, emotion, heros, villains, war & ultimately peace. The characters are endearing. The villains are a bit vague & one dimensional, but adequately advance the story.

I especially like the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence as beneficial, interacting with humans in a cooperative fashion. The idea that AI will develop intent on taking over & killing people is trite & ultimately short sighted. There is no reason AI can’t be a beneficial part of our world.

Again, it’s a wonderful story with interesting characters. The novels twist & turn in interesting ways advancing the story while adding appropriate complexity.

Though they may be a bit campy at times these novels are a fun read. I very highly recommend these novels to all lovers of Science Fiction.

This was a very entertaining read. I originally picked it up because the protagonist shared the same name as my little puppy. I felt that I would probably read only the first novel of the series, but I did not. The entire series is great.

All the science fiction elements you could desire are there, Aliens! Space Battles! AI! Time Travel! Androids! and yes, a little romance is sprinkled in, but does not interfere with the story at all.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and the science fiction portions were well thought out. I am also a stickler for editing, but was very pleased that I did not note any editing issues that detracted from the reader's enjoyment.

Enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.

I was a bit skeptical about investing in a 5 book series, but I jumped in and never stopped. I admit I love a long story. It was a fun easy read. I liked the characters. I also liked the straightforward timeline. It didn't jump around too much (except for a bit which I won't mention). The science is presented with a bit of explanation to try to make it sound plausible, but if you are after hard, verifiable science, this is not it. Suspend your scientific understanding and enjoy. If you like a good story of alien invasion, characters that fight back, Artificial Intelligence, lots of emotional involvement, some romance, and plenty of action, this is a very good read.

These were seriously a great deal of fun.

The first two novel started very slowly, but picked up. The final three have quicker starts, but less detail. Either way the books were enjoyable.

Not every loose end is tied off by the end, but those that are not don't take away from the experience (can't mention them without providing spoilers).

The main characters are strong and consistent throughout. Some of the minor characters leave you wanting for more detail, but that may be a personal thing.

Highly recommended.

Really fun series

This was a MASSIVE but really fun series of books. It's taken me ages to read them all. There are a lot of technical bits in them, which is really good, but sometimes it's a bit overwhelming and I needed to step.away to try and absorb what I was reading. There were some questions left unanswered, but that's any story I think. The characters are fun and mostly quite endearing, if occasionally a bit ridiculous. The pace was fairly even and the story was long and winding and only occasionally unnecessarily drawn out. All in all, a fun little space thumper.

Starts strong and keeps growing

Rarely have I had a set of books with such powerful, naturally progressing character growth. The story flowed smoothly, every ex machina worked in just a way that it feels cohesive.
Of course, I had to stop reading about the dragon mage to power through this series, so extra bit of foreknowledge, but I still didnt get some of the twists the way I expected.

Just a few thoughts on this. The first two books were a bit of a slog; the main protagonist was childish, and I threatened to put the series down because they pissed me off. That being said, besides some minor annoyances with character development the story did develop and I enjoyed it. This was solid escapism. The storyline was easy enough to where I was able to listen while at work while doing my daily tasks but still follow along.

I read the first two books of this series separately, then purchased the kindle series as a set. Nothing deep but really enjoyable escapism to relax with. A story of an individual and her friends waging intergalactic war against invading aliens. The personalities of different A.I interacting with the humans of the story works really well.

Hilarious dialog!

A marvelous story with all the requisite details needed for a grand sci-fi series. The many "ancient" movie references are a nice touch, and the lighter conversations are masterfully written. I laughed in places that popped up unexpectedly. Thoroughly entertaining!

Fantastic!

I picked this series up while waiting for the next Bad Luck Charlie to come out. Even knowing a little about what was going on from the crossover I still couldn't put it down. Scott Baron writes with a similar style as Craig Martelle and Michael Anderle. Great series, fantastic characters and a great story line.

Epic ADULT sci-fi adventure🚀
This set Has everything but the Proverbial kitchen sink🚽 thrown in. It is Continuing series of 5 books📚 with the same characters.
Some Aspects of the book are quite innovative but then others are standard sci-fi fare🚀. The entire series is quite long and will take most readers several nights or days to finish.
Well worth reading if you have plenty of spare time.

Wow, I loved every second of every book from start to finish. The story telling is simple and keeps you involved. I found myself wanting to skip pages (entire books) just to see what happens. The pace of each book is great with the only exception (for me) trying to say the alien names and planets as intended, HA. Overall, a great read, I just wish the story continued.

Really enjoyed these books.

These stories start out slow but builds quickly to a point you just get eager to know what happens next. Like any good story just cause you're one of the good guys doesn't mean you live to see the happy ever after times, but enough do, for you to hope the will turn up again in more books.

Good read!

Unusually the books are precisely sequential, that is good as they follow without overlap or repitition. A well thought through story and good characterisation. Very enjoyable.

Ask Friends to Read

Advising, or advertising, a book/series to someone is always a bit risky. This "Clockwork Chimera" series has been fun to read. The author has even come up with a way to keep the changes in the family. There, no cheating, just a teaser.

I had met Daisy while riding along with Charley and Bawb, what I didn't realize is that I have or will meet everyone again.
Great series I suppose I might should have read Daisy first but it all fits .
