Pride: The Celebration and the Struggle

Rate this book
★ "An indispensable and celebratory primer on the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights. An excellent resource that is as thorough as it is visually appealing." --School Library Journal, starred review

Like the original version, this new edition of Pride: The Celebration and the Struggle celebrates the LGBTQ+ community's diversity and the incredible victories of the past 50 years--but it also has a larger focus on activism, the need to keep fighting for equality and freedom around the world and the important role that young people are playing. The new edition has been updated and expanded to include many new Proud Moments and Queer Facts as well as a profile of LGBTQ+ refugees from Indonesia, a story about a Pride celebration in a refugee camp in Kenya and profiles of young activists, including teens from a Gender and Sexuality Alliance organizing Pride in Inuvik and a trans girl from Vancouver fighting for inclusion and support in schools. There is also a section on being an ally, a profile of a family with two gay dads (one of them trans) and much, much more!

Praise for the first edition, Pride: Celebrating Diversity & Community

"LGBTQ culture and rights are covered through the prism of Pride in this timely work...This attractive work will be welcomed by readers searching for guidance and hope."--Kirkus Reviews

"Informative...Positively festive in its attitudes and outlook, this book more than lives up to the word celebrating in its subtitle."--Booklist

"Upbeat and matter-of-fact...These stories, sad and happy, are where vulnerable preteen kids may see themselves."--Quill & Quire

"An excellent and necessary addition for all collections."--School Library Journal

An excellent book on PRIDE, and I love the broader context in which this book places LGBTQ Pride. If you only read one book on Pride, this should be it. Extremely accessible - written for juvenile and young adult levels, but extremely informative for adult readers too.

I had read, and loved, the original version of this book. And when I saw a new, updated and expanded version available I snapped it up.

**I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

What I liked about this book, is that it is perfect four younger readers in their teens, or for adults who want to know more about the basics of the LGBTQ history.
As a queer woman, I knew some things already, yet still learned a new fact here and there.
The book is accompanied by beautiful, and diverse, photographs and pictures. Also reading different testimonies from LGBTQ people around the globe, was very interesting.

(Thank you to NetGalley and Orca Book Publishers for a digital ARC of this book!)

I quite enjoyed this updated version of Stevenson's book, which includes some great stories about the many celebrations and continued fights for freedom that LGBTQ+ communities have experienced around the world. I truly loved the real-life stories from activists in places such as Indonesia, Uganda, and Peru, since #ownvoices representation is so important. I appreciated that even as an adult reader I learned new facts, and really liked that they were presented in a way that is 100% accessible to younger readers. and really enjoyed getting to see stories from places like. As a Black woman, I also really appreciated how Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Storme DeLarverie were discussed as integral parts of the Stonewall Riot.
The beautiful pictures, “queer facts”, and great emphasis on the importance of intersectionality in activism really make this book enjoyable. I think this book would be a great addition to every middle and upper school classroom/library, as well as a great resource for all adults who want to learn more about activism in and for the LGBTQ+ community.

A good read and very informative for youth or all-ages to learn about LGBT+ history, but some of the language used really threw me off. The biggest example is when books like this try to use the whole unnecessary LGBT+ acronym, or referring to trans people (in this case, trans women) as being "a woman who was born as a boy". Just call them trans women in the first place.

I would not let this stop anyone from reading, as Robinson definitely does include a wide variety of viewpoints and touches on topics of how pride should be intersectional, but somehow it still comes off as one person speaking for a whole community, and I'm not quite sure why.

This is a really interesting introduction to LGBTQ+ history and the continuing fight for equality. It’s perfect for showing that it’s ok to embrace who they are and great for those interested in learning about the history.

I already knew some of what was covered but it still and interesting read and I liked that it included the real stories and testimonials from around the world.

The pictures were gorgeous. They’re diverse, bright, and colourful.

Great pictures that capture the joy of Pride! I lost enjoyed reading about pride celebrations around the world and young advocates who are working for change. Although this is a good book for people just starting to learn about Pride and LGBTQIA+ topics, as someone who has already read about these topics, it did not teach me much that I didn’t already know, which is why I would rate this a 3.5-4 stars.

This is a must read for people of all ages. I know this is geared towards children, but I thought this was a well written and researched nonfiction book about the LGBTQ+ history. From past to present and how over the years some things have changed and the group has gotten more rights than before, but it is still an on going fight for equality for all.

7/11/2021 ~ I read sections of each chapter to determine whether this would fit in my elementary library collection. School Library Journal suggests grades 6-9.

Lots of vivid photos; pull out quotes; highlights of youth who are advocating for queer rights.

Verdict: Not ready to add it to my elementary collection, but might revisit in the future.

Pride is an introduction to LGBTQ+ history and current events. It covers everything from what commonly used acronyms mean to the struggle for equality around the world.

The digital copy I had was a bit challenging to view. The formatting seemed off, but the pictures were cheerful and colorful, and the author included positive quotes from well-known figures.

This book may be a good starting point for older children and teens who would like to learn what it means to be queer. It is also a positive resource for teens who need reassurance that it's OK to be different and there are other people like them in the world.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I decided to read this new edition of Pride since I enjoyed the first one.

This is a great nonfiction book to introduce teens and preteens (and rather ignorant adults like myself) about what all the fuss is with Pride celebrations. It talks about the Stonewall riots and early discriminations towards the LGBT community. With full color photos throughout, it also shows Pride festivities or demonstrations from around the world- and shows how much work still needs to be done. It’s incredible to read how far we’ve come and know there’s still a long way to go.

Revised and updated with new content including more profiles and even more of a focus on youth activism.
