Babel

We are living in an open sea, caught up in a continuous wave, with no fixed point and no instrument to measure distance and the direction of travel. Nothing appears to be in its place any more, and a great deal appears to have no place at all. The principles that have given substance to the democratic ethos, the system of rules that has guided the relationships of authority and the ways in which they are legitimized, the shared values and their hierarchy, our behaviour and our life styles, must be radically revised because they no longer seem suited to our experience and understanding of a world in flux, a world that has become both increasingly interconnected and prone to severe and persistent crises.

We are living in the interregnum between what is no longer and what is not yet. None of the political movements that helped undermine the old world are ready to inherit it, and there is no new ideology, no consistent vision, promising to give shape to new institutions for the new world. It is like the Babylon referred to by Borges, the country of randomness and uncertainty in which 'no decision is final; all branch into others'. Out of the world that had promised us modernity, what Jean Paul Sartre had summarized with sublime formula 'le choix que je suis' ('the choice that I am'), we inhabit that flattened, mobile and dematerialized space, where as never before the principle of the heterogenesis of purposes is sovereign.

This is Babel.

Zygmunt Bauman was a world-renowned Polish sociologist and philosopher, and Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds. He was one of the world's most eminent social theorists, writing on issues as diverse as modernity and the Holocaust, postmodern consumerism and liquid modernity and one of the creators of the concept of “postmodernism”.

C'era una tale voglia di globalizzazione, pochi anni fa, che nessuno voleva vederne il lato oscuro. Poi a globalizzarsi è stata la crisi e anche le democrazie hanno scoperto di essere seriamente malate. Indagine erudita e analitica sul vuoto politico e sociale dei nostri anni. Peraltro mi sono sembrate molto più profonde le domande (le provocazioni) di Mauro che le risposte (le analisi) di Bauman.

Zygmunt Bauman y Ezio Mauro dialogan sobre la política y la democracia en la actualidad como se ya no cree en estas y como sobre estas existen otros poderes el consumismo. En el segmento de "Solitarios Interconectados" se nos hacen creer que estamos participando políticamente dando un like o comentado, pero no estamos ejerciendo un cambio en la realidad, ya que somos bombardeados por noticias que son efímeras que no permanecen y por las cuales no indignamos si son verdaderas.

"A mais horrenda manifestação dessa frustração é a distância crescente entre os que votam e os que são postos no poder pelo seu voto. Cada vez menos os eleitores confiam nas promessas feitas pelas pessoas que elegem para governar; amargamente descrentes por causa das promessas não cumpridas do passado, os eleitores não chegam a esperar que desta vez as promessas sejam cumpridas.

Com frequência cada vez maior, os eleitores apenas procedem mecanicamente – mais guiados por seus hábitos adquiridos que por alguma esperança de mudança para melhor ensejada pelo seu voto. Na melhor das hipóteses, eles vão às cabines eleitorais para escolher males menores. Interessante descrição a respeito da organização tecnológica da sociedade e a filosofia envolvida nesse processo. Trata da filosofia da linguagem, de um pouco de metafísica, da filosofia da sociedade, da percepção e do senso de democracia e cidadania. Lida com paradoxos sociais e o futuro da nossa sociedade envolvida com a tecnologia, e aonde isso levará os sistemas de governo. Muito interessante para reflexão e é uma ótima discussão de todos esses temas. Interessante para abrir a mente e sugerir reflexões para os preocupados com o futuro da sociedade.

Libertà di parola e di espressione, la crisi della politica, il ruolo della massa, lo stato e le sue responsabilità, internet i social media e le nuove forme di comunicazione, democrazia, dialogo interculturale, l'Unione Europea e le sfide che deve affrontare, comunicare troppo per non comunicare niente. Tutto cioè e molto di più condensato in questo libro che ti avvolge, ti fa sentire in colpa, ti fa riflettere con sociologi, politologi, antropologi, linguisti...da leggere!

So, we are basically living the Big Brother by our own choice, the government is useless against the economy, 50 years from now everyone will plow robots and be unemployed because one cannot help posting dumb opinions on social networks and the ability to inquire and critical thinking are long lost.
I need a sound dose of layers of irony.
