On the galactic frontier, the Federation’s wildest (and most scientific) citizens have gathered to ride in the Space Rodeo. The Navy’s in charge—of the arena. But beyond the naval perimeter, there is only Interstellar Sheriff Max Smith to keep the peace. Fortunately, he has some extraordinary allies. And enemies. And then, there is his girlfriend.
Thelma Bach attracts trouble like the bunyaphi attract feuds.
She should have been safe, riding for an urself inventor in the Space Rodeo. So how did she end up in the middle of a mercenary corporation’s devious designs for galactic war?
Buckle up for a thrill ride of bandits, shadowy government agents, cyborgs, AIs and strange science.

*** I've curated my bookshelf to share books which I hope readers of Caldryn Parliament will enjoy. With the older books, please be aware that they are a product of their times and read with care.
Thelma really showed promise in the first book. Fresh out of training she made some mistakes but I could see real growth and enormous potential.
In this book, she's relegated to cooking for the men, being a damsel in distress, and acting as the bed warmer for the male lead. It was absolutely horrible.
Finally enough free time to read Space Rodeo, knew I wouldn't stop once I started and I was correct.
All the main characters from book 1 are present, along with new characters who could be friend or foe or both. Love how all the plot threads come together in the end, the space rodeo, the bunyaphi, the artificial intelligence or A.I.s., etc.
And Thelma, what a character. Her personality and brain power are only surpassed by her concern and protectiveness of her family and friends. Max isn't too far behind in the brains and protectiveness.
In a darker universe Thelma's musings on A.I.s and their relations to humans, non-humans and civilization would be extremely concerning and prophetic. In this universe I'm not too worried that the A.I.s will take over but book 3 is still to come.
KU - yes, purchased after reading, it's a keeper and a re-read Overall rating - 5 Recommend book - definitively Tags - space opera, alien interactions, artificial intelligence, mystery, suspense, romance, humor No cliffhanger, happy for now, still lots of questions for the next book Sex - closed door except for a few kisses Violence - yes, the villains have no hesitation in mass murder of innocents but not overly descriptive
Rereading - yes, so many details that I often don't catch until the rereads Series - book 2 of at least 3 Reading out of order - not a problem, enough info given of characters and situations that the story doesn't confuse or overwhelm. Didn't have time to re-read book 1 and had no problem jumping into book 2. Although I plan on rereading book 1 then 2 so that I can more fully enjoy the world building and characters. Reading the next - planning on it! I've even preordered rather than my usual reading in KU then buying. Think Jenny talked on facebook about a spin off series next year featuring Carl and Helen, yay!
Recommend author - definitely, one of the authors I turn to when I need a positive reading experience. Jenny is one of my auto-buy, auto-read authors. Love that her series usually have a set beginnings, middle and end. She also layers in the details throughout the series making it fun to go back and re-read earlier books.
(Why incorporate a template rather than just writing out a review? I started thinking about what I'm looking for in a review, regardless of the review's rating, and wanted to make sure I was providing solid information to a potential reader rather than "read, loved, more please." I also tend to start a review and then get distracted by the next shiny book before I finish the review, so this is my attempt to help me write the review before moving on.)
Terrific second entry in a wonderful SF, romantic-adventure series
The romance of Thelma and Max has become committed, and they have created a wonderful family of affiliation, especially two amazing, sentient AI individuals. There is also lots of exciting action.
A lovely addition to what will be an awesome series!
Oh my! I raced through this story! It was full of more of the same interesting characters and twisted plots as the first in the series showed. There were also lots of threads to follow for future consumption . Can’t wait!
Great second book in the series. This can stand alone and has a complete story with two great new characters. I love how the plot moves along and keeps the attention on the interaction between the characters and the danger that they face. Looking forward the book three but have a long wait.
A little disjointed in a few places, but a good enough continuation of the Interstellar Sheriff series to read without stopping. Looking forward to the next one.
This is the second book in a continuing series. You need to read the first book to understand this one. The book ends at a natural break in the narrative but there is still a tiny cliffhanger.
Thelma is now free of the constraints of her contract with Galactic Justice and has hung up her Deputy’s Beret. She’s working full time as an information broker and is starting to make a good reputation for herself in the Saloon Sector. On top of that she is deliriously happy with her lover Max, her former boss. She loves living aboard The Lonesome with Max, and also Lon and Harry, both AIs. Lon is embedded in the ship and Harry is hidden inside a Mech, or robot.
Thelma is off working away from the Lonesome when Max has a new deputy foisted on him. The only reason he accepted Thelma was a favour to her brother, so he isn’t particularly happy about his new employee, especially as he has been instructed to house him onboard the Lonesome with it’s myriad of secrets. It also doesn’t help that he’s being reassigned from Covert Ops and is obviously expected to spy on Max and what is so special about his ship.
The crew of The Lonesome, are thrown headlong into a complicated plot that involves grave consequences for those taking part. In a sector filled to the brim with tourists in the area to watch the Space Rodeo, Max has to work out who is manipulating things and how to stop them hurting innocent bystanders as well as he and his crew.
I’m enjoying this series tremendously. The characters are fun and interesting and the plot hurtles along at the speed of light. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way and the crew have to work as a team in order to resolve their problems safely. I do like it when one characters doesn’t hold sole responsibility for solving all the problems. Despite his greater experience, Max recognises that Thelma is very intelligent and equally competent. Max is the best kind of alpha, he’s protective, moral and wants to lift people up. His actions are rarely selfish, except where is comes to Thelma.
Carl, the new deputy, is also an interesting character. He is a cyborg and as such has no family. Cyborgs are rare and an expensive asset to the government and they don’t want cyborgs to be manipulated or have torn loyalties, so only solitary people are converted to ensure their reliance on the government. His role is important to the plot but his character becomes revealed through the story and he becomes less of a device and more of an interesting person, with his own quirks and interests. His addition to the crew add interesting dynamics to the interaction of all the characters.
This is a really entertaining story and I very much enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see what happens to these interesting people next!
Thelma is still annoying and the premise is way too contrived. I'm sorry, but the government doesn't get to order Max to take a new deputy and let him live on Max's ship. They didn't buy it. They have no authority to it. This is the equivalent of the chief of police telling a cop he's being assigned a new partner and is required to let said partner move into his house. Nope, with a large side of go fuck yourself. They can't order that, and it is dumb and contrived to pretend they can. It makes the characters look completely dumb for going along with it. They can assign him a deputy, but they can't make him surrender space in his personal property to the guy.
And again, Thelma is an utterly brainless narcissist. It is really jarring, after reading 3 other series from this author where the FMC was fucking awesome.
The other thing that put me off enough to throw in the towel is that in the typical refresher beats you get early in a book (reminding you of points from the previous book), Thelma's narrative (her POV) babbles on about her being out here because after all the talk of equal opportunities, she got punted to the frontier as punishment for doing well ... and non-core world people are second class citizens that need to be slapped down for thinking they are as good as core world people.
Bitch, get that chip off your shoulder. The entire book was a slow reveal of how Thelma was deluding herself with this nonsense, making it her whole personality, when it was WRONG. The other agent practically laughed in her face for not realizing that it wasn't the SYSTEM slapping her down, it was one primadonna mother angry that Thelma did better than - and rejected the advances of - her golden boy son. Mama is a Senator, so she was able to finagle the assignments. And again, the other agent laughed at how stupid and blind Thelma was about it. Further, it was confirmed later BY THE SENATOR MAMA! So then in our rehash bits, we get the same deluded story. WTF? No, that is NOT why you're out here - the system isn't beating you down for doing well as a Rock Sector citizen. It was one shitty but powerful person who wanted to punish anyone who got in the way of her son's rise to big shot politician. So for the love of sweet baby Jesus, please stop acting like the entire universe is prejudiced against you. You are dating the PRESIDENT'S SON, ffs. He's not prejudiced against you.
I have to assume this was the author's first book (maybe not first to publish, but first written, full of all kinds of learning mistakes), because there is no garbage like this in the more recent series (or at least, the 3 I read and loved). But I have no patience for it, so I'm done here.
**MINOR SPOILERS** This book is the second book of the Interstellar Sheriff series. I think it is best for the series to be read in order. I thought the book was excellent and recommend it and the series. The space frontier is suddenly quite busy as a space/time anomaly has appeared and, as a result, there is a space rodeo planned. The rodeo brings people into the sector including a group with terrorist intentions. Max, the sheriff for this area of the space frontier, is asked to work with Carl as a deputy. He does not trust Carl, who is also a cyborg, as it is possible he is a spy or someone who may sabotage Max’s efforts. As the situation develops, he tests Carl’s loyalties and later begins working with him during the investigation. Max secretly has 2 AIs helping him. One, Lon, runs the spaceship and the other, Harry, is a mech (a human looking robot with intelligence). The book raises the interesting question of whether they are people are not. They are described as having a soul. Both Max and Thelma consider them to be friends, and the AI clearly care about them. The first book was told from Thelma’s point of view. This book alternates between Thelma and Max’s point of view. Their relationship took a significant step forward in the book. I liked Thelma’s character. She is smart and resourceful. Max is a protector and very honorable and smart. The pace of the book is fast. It would have been nice if the book included a map. I bought the rest of the books in the series, and I look forward to reading them.
Great story, loving he adventures of the Lonesome A Coment Helices, a rare anomaly has popped up in the Saloon Sector, triggering a "Space Rodeo". Bringing adventurers, scientist, and tourist. The navy has assumed responsibility for policing the Rodeo, and Max and his team are busy taking care of everything else. While investigating the Keele issue. Max, Lom and Harry are being forced by the new Chief of the Interstellar Sheriff's Service to take on a new deputy. Carl Jafrov/Jameston, a cyborg, covert ops agent, and a spy as far as the Lonesome's crew is concerned. Thelma is away from the family, helping a scientist, acting as his pilot in his experiments into the Comet helix. Aubree asks Thelma to pull one of her assets from the Diner using a friend of hers. Once again she is passing info on the Max. Then an attempt is made on Thelm's life, and Owen and his family go into protection mode. She is kidnapped by another AI, the socially awkward Reynard, because Lon was worried. Aubree's meddling leads Max and Carl to a base with illegal mechs. A clan war. A plot to assassinate Max. Just as things are winding down, Nefertiti returns home and she has news for Harry. Loved the Lonesome's latest adventure. Loved Owen's family. Carl and Reynard are great additions to the family. Looking forward to their next adventure.
It is with this second book that you begin to get a sense of the story arc for the series. It is decent, and the introduction of Carl gives it some tension; Reynard is also quite interesting. Both are good, welcome additions. There's no sign or even mention of Mstjovic (sp) or Cherry in this book, so if you're expecting that - don't. To be fair though, most of the events in this book happen fairly quickly, and there's enough going on to keep your interest.
The books in my opinion are of a better quality than either the titles or the covers (sorry to the author or the decision-makers on that), so if you're on the fence about the series based on either - don't let that sway you. The titles may be logical enough, but there's a lot more to the stories than that.
For what it's worth, most of the books I read on Kindle are on Kindle Unlimited and free. This means for you that I'm not monetarily invested in a series to decide whether to continue or not. I've dropped a couple of series that lost my interest. And that's to say - I'm on my way to the 3rd in the series and looking forward to it.
Schwartz, Jenna. Space Rodeo. Interstellar Sheriff No. 2. Kindle, 2020. There is a story I hope is true that when Samuel L. Jackson saw some of the first rushes of Snakes on a Plane, he complained with Jacksonian expletives that there weren’t enough snakes on the plane. I feel the same way about Jenna Schwartz’s Space Rodeo. There is just not enough (insert Jacksonian expletive) Space Rodeo. What we have instead is a continuation of Max and Thelma’s romance, some duller than dull interstellar politics and family drama, a terrorist plot, and another android to go along with the cyborgs, mechs, and androids we met in the first volume. Until then, ride ‘em space girl, and can we have some more bar fights, please? 2.5 stars.
The narrative's expansion with Carl's introduction alongside familiar characters like Max, Thelma, Harry, and Lon creates a rich and dynamic ensemble. The plot unfolds with remarkable depth, weaving an intricate tapestry of storytelling that captivates from the first page. Character interactions pulse with authenticity, drawing readers into a meticulously crafted world that feels both vibrant and lived-in. Each page promises new discoveries, leaving me eagerly anticipating the next installment in this extraordinary series.
Thelma and Max have to deal with a new deputy foisted upon them by the Chief of Interstellar Sheriffs. Will Carl be a problem or part of the solution? I like the action, humor, and romance. Much is revealed throughout the book as secrets are revealed. The plot held my attention to the end and set me up for the next book. The socialization of the young AI was intriguing. I look forward to the next book.
4.5. This is some super satisfying sci-fi detective work!
Loved this second entry. Fast moving with a smart plot and good dialogue, the story is told without a word wasted. Our team has grown with the addition of a new cyborg and another AI. Max is under threat but he has what may be the best team in the galaxy on his side. Thelma is no longer a newbie and her job is paying off for the team in spades. What a fun read!
Liked the first one. And this one was ok up until...
They sent the little woman off to hide while the men stayed and fought. Ridiculous to portray the woman as a law officer that can take care of herself and others yet then she goes off peacefully to hide, because it worries him that she is there. Unbelievable. Went from interesting to stupid in 2 paragraphs. Will not be reading the next in the series.
It's not clear how the space rodeo works as a spectator sport. Nevertheless, hordes of them have descended on the Saloon Sector where it is up to Sheriff Max Smith and his ship Lonesome to keep things from getting out of hand. Thelma Bach is now working as an information broker and sometime Space Rodeo pilot. Max feels no need for a new deputy but is coerced into taking on Carl, who he does not trust any further than the Lonesome’s front hatch. A fun, mostly light read.
This is another good book in the series - almost a great one, but with a lot more typos than the first one. The errors are starting to distract from the story. This is such a good series, the author should have splurged on a copy editor to make a great series!
A good book series continues with an even better sequel!
The twists and turns continue while Thelma and Max strive to keep order. To the mix add a Covert Opp agent as Max's new deputy and the fur could really fly! The story was gull of twists and turns. Now, I'm excited enough to look for the next book!
Really complex evil plans with personal attacks, master assassins, An undercover covert ops enhanced deputy, a weirdly Multi armed new AI (a new favorite), horrifying modified winged peeps ready to go insane, and our sweet Thelma who is caught between hugging metal AIs and saving their universe. Just fun with all the federal agencies wanting their share.
This second book in Ms Schwartz’s Space Rodeo series is as delightful and fun as the first. As light as cotton balls, the story leads you in a ‘who done it caper’ that makes up its own rules, but still manages to keep turning pages. This story is very light on science but is enjoyable fiction and makes for a fun summer read.
A sheriff, a deputy and an AI walked into a diner…
This book went out on a limb and then sawed it off! I was so surprised by the direction and loved the grembly Reynard. Carl the cyborg was unexpected, but a great addition to the cast.
Really enjoyed it. Interestingly it sat on my shelf since finishing the first instalment in 2023, because the cover didn't draw me in. But it was recently updated and felt more inspiring, so now Space Rodeo finally makes sense. Great read with good world building and nuanced characters. I enjoyed small things like no apparent plot holes and nice sentences, too.
2025 bk 99. Double helixes have formed in space and time and the scientists, inventors, pilots are having a field day. Booming business in the frontier of space means a sheriff is one busy person. The adventure is wild and wooly with lots of unexpected twists of the alien and AI kind and lots of questions follow. A well put together sf experience and I have the 3rd lined up and ready to read.
I started this and didn't stop for much until I finished and starting the next one in the morning. I enjoy the characters and how they interact with each other.
So refreshing to read a fresh space adventure with good and interesting characters with good ethics and kind hearts. Reminiscent in flavour to Anne McCaffrey’s Planet pirate and ship who sang series. I hope there are many more to come in this series.
I love a series that just gets better , almost like a good bottle of wine. By the time you get to the end it is one of the best you ever had. I love writers of sci-fi!!
