Adjusting seems to be the new norm for Dr. Presley Baskin. She adjusting to life without her mother, adjusting to learning she has three half-siblings, she’s adjusting to not be on her own since said siblings are making it their business to include her, she’s adjusting to learning her former best friend is trying to kill her and she’s adjusting to finding herself attracted to most unlikely person she could think of. Shot Caldwell is larger than life, tattooed, rough around the edges, dangerous and most definitely not her type. He lives his life on the edge but when Presley is called to help Shot after he’s been, well, shot and saves his life she finds herself kind of stuck with him since he’s declared he owes her.
Shot Caldwell does not like to owe anyone, he pays his debts and now that Presley has literally saved his life, he’s indebted to her. He’s proclaimed himself as her protector, at least until he feels he’s settled his debt with her. He’s the President of a Biker Club, he doesn’t necessarily life within the lines of the law and his lifestyle does not lend itself to relationships, but somehow, he finds himself there with Presley. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it means teaming up with the local law who aren’t really fans of his.
So, Presley has basically been in hiding since she learned that her whack-a-doo former best bud is trying to kill her. She’s also getting tired of having her life put on pause because of it. Aware of Presley’s situation, Shot appoints himself and members of the club to watch over her, much to the dismay of Presley and some of the club members. It’s Shot who convinces Presley to gradually go back to living her life in order to bring Ashby out to the open. Shot has a few enemies of his own and he’s not sure if the incidents that have occurred when he’s with Presley are attempts on her life or his.
I knew from the moment I was introduced to Shot in the previous Loveless books that I liked him, and I hoped he’d get a storyline. I couldn’t figure out how it was going to happen considering his interest lie with Kody Lawton and she was now with Hill Gamble. When I realized it was Presley who he was going to be paired with, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it because these two where at two different ends of the spectrum, but like they say…. Opposites attract and Jay Crownover tied them together beautifully. The chemistry between the two was great.
I was kind of worried that Presley would be a “cold” character. I think she started off that way, but I liked the way she evolved, and she even had a little sense of humor. Shot, whose actual name is Palmer (color me surprised), well, the sex appeal just kind of jumped off the page. I appreciated how even though he fell in love, he didn’t lose who he was. He was could still be the badass he was first introduced as. I wouldn’t recommend reading this as a standalone simply because characters from previous books are mentioned quite a bit and if you are anything like me, you’ll wonder about their storylines and drive yourself crazy.
I was thinking there might be a spin off from the series featuring Shot’s VP, Top, because he seems like a pretty interesting character himself…but now I’m not too sure. Needless to say whatever comes next I’m anxiously awaiting.
