When will success and happiness give a f*ck about you?
Why do many of us painstakingly pay misery to the perplexing social laws?
How to stop whining, start weaning, and eventually "win"?
Throughout my life, I have almost blindly fumbled upon stuff that I thought never existed. Sometimes I have thought I had come up with a novel idea only to stumble onto a source that already existed many centuries before I was born.
I have realized that a lot of times, what seems to disturb us is not anything new. It bothered our ancestors and those before them. And so, why do these disturbances keep on nagging our minds?
We all have stories to tell. However, if you thought of your own story and never listen to other people's stories, such a monologue would be not only dull but also ignorant. Being on the Ledge of the Know is to appreciate that your story is only but the tip of the iceberg, a small pebble in the ocean of human experience.
Throughout my life, I have fumbled upon rich humus of knowledge that has nourished the grey matter that extended my skull. I have extracted from it, rich content and distilled from it a pure spirit that soothes my soul.
I will share with you my limited distillates. I will plant with you on my decadent humus. Moreover, I will learn with you the nature of our being.
There is a lot that I have learned from other people's stories than I could ever teach from my own story.
I can't pretend that I can teach you. However, I know that I can share with you my insights and perspectives... in the hope that you will be able to see the same darkness as I am and beyond it visualize the stars that I see.
I hope we will fumble together in this intoxication.
Alex Neumann is a Best-Selling Author. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Also, he holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science.
Ever since childhood, he has been interested in understanding how some people can thrive through challenging times in life, and he hopes that by sharing these hard-fought lessons, we can make this world a better place.
Alex lives with his wife, dog, and cat. He likes to live a quiet and easy-going life. He enjoys good wine and catching sun rays with his lazy dog.
Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind: Spatial Strategy to Success and Happiness by Alex Neumann is a motivational book about throwing away old misconceptions and using a new strategy in order to move forward. This book successfully uses many examples and interesting anecdotal stories to make its point.
There are ten chapters in this book. I identified more with some of them than others. One of the main lessons that impacted me in this book is Ride Your Adversity. I would interpret it as Do Not Fear or Wallow in Adversity. Extreme fear of failure can result in stagnation, cowering in fear, or refusing to move forward. Basically, fear of failure can lead to failure. Wallowing in adversity can lead to an unhappy, stagnant life. Learning from your adversity can give you success in the future.
Another strong message I got from this book is, basically, Don’t Be Afraid To Try. Among the anecdotal examples are the following: Michael Jordan missed 9000 shots while having one of the most, if not the most, successful basketball careers in history. Einstein and Beethoven were deemed failures before they achieved greatness. JK Rowling came from poverty and was living on public assistance. This book gives many other interesting and compelling anecdotes to make its points in a very successful way.
There are also lessons that I enjoyed on learning to say No and what happens when you try to control everything.
Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind contains some Buddhist principles, and I am a Christian, but there are still some helpful strategies that anyone of any faith can use to overcome setbacks and move on to a happy and successful life right now.
I found this book, and its anecdotal stories, to be interesting and helpful. I would recommend it to everyone, but especially those who are feeling hurt and discouraged.
Bottom Line: If you are discouraged, read this book!
I received a free copy of this book from Alex Neumann via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.
"Let us do what we love and are passionate about, for it is what makes us come alive and fully live."
4 Stars // 80% Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind is the sort of self-help book I'd recommend to everyone, regardless of age or reading tastes. It's short but packs a lot of punch into its 200 pages, and the charming yet easily digestible prose provides insights that can help anyone build a strong, invincible mind. Though I breezed through it relatively quickly, it's really best read one chapter at a time right before you sleep or right after you wake up.
The best parts of this book are the anecdotes. Rather than muddying the text with incomprehensible scientific studies, Neumann takes time-tested stories and proverbs and sprinkles them throughout the pages, emphasizing important themes with inspirational heroics from all backgrounds and religions. It felt like I was talking to some wise old sage. I would not normally suggest cutting out the middleman that is peer-reviewed articles and statistics, but by doing just that in this book, Neumann connected with the reader on a more personal level.
My only complaint is that some sections did feel redundant. The author repeats the notion of overcoming your adversity by "[shaking] it off and [stepping] up" many times (though it could be intentional). This phrase slipped into chapters that were not about adversity at all, making Harness the Power feel less like a list of ideas and more a theme and a group of variations. I can appreciate that, but I did want more strategies rather than a central mantra or motif.
Overall, this is a well-written book with many great nuggets of wisdom. I already know that I'm going to come back to certain passages when I need advice—the passages about open-mindedness, living without bias, and learning from criticism resonated with me in particular. If you are tired of generic, statistics-heavy self-help books that lack passion and the human element, Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind will satisfy you with its humanity and honesty. Many thanks to the author for providing me with a review copy!
I really enjoyed reading this book. Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind: Spatial Strategy to Success and Happiness by Alex Neumann is a very well written life improvement book. This book is intelligent, wise and packed to the rafters with practical common-sense advice. It becomes obvious as you read through this page turner that the author is imparting his wisdom and understanding as to what happiness and success really means. It’s an excellent guide for putting things into perspective.
Profound thoughts are explained here in the simplest of terms. That’s all I can say about this book. It is difficult to write a more objective review because the impact the author will have on you will make you see life and its problems in a wise and practical way. The book should NOT be read – it should be absorbed and reflected upon. It’s a book that will help you to clarify your thinking, process your feelings, and make better decisions. If you are you ready to stop drifting and design a life you love, this read with help you on your journey. The author has put his heart in the pages of this book that encourages and gives hope to the reader.
The overall tone was simply imparting knowledge, personal experience and wisdom in a gentle and generous way. The authors’ words will help to better equip you to interpret and handle life in a whole new way, which in turn will bring peace, love and joy into your life. If you are looking for inspiration and encouragement in the face of serious issues, this would come highly recommended from me.
No matter what your situation is today, this book will put you on the right path to better things. I’ve been around the block a few times myself and even I found this read to be very insightful. This wonderful new book will show you how to properly tune into life and the simple rules you must follow to achieve this. This by far is one of the best Self-Improvement books I’ve read in a long time. The author must be commended for his time and effort for producing such an insightful book. Also, the writing style is friendly which makes for an enjoyable read.
HARNESS THE POWER OF THE INVINCIBLE MIND is a wonderful read that will leave you feeling like a better person for having read it. It’s an impressive work for author Alex Neumann and I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from him in the future. I would highly recommend this perceptive and intuitive read. A well-deserved five stars from me.
Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind: Spatial Strategy to Success and Happiness by Alex Neumann is a well written self help book that will help you pull up your bootstraps and get on with life. The book begins with framing adversity in a new way, looking at examples of adversity throughout history that actually challenged mankind and allowed for progress. A good example is how crops were grown, yet when there was a drought, humans figured out how to work around that, when there are bugs or vermin in crops during storage, storage solutions were improved. These examples provide powerful examples of the human ability to overcome regardless of how pleasant we want our lives to be. The author fully shares his insights and perspectives teaching you the reader to re-frame your brain and your experience. The book encourages you to step out of your comfort zone, challenges your preconceived notions, and look at your life in a new way. Great book that introduces solid and concrete advice that is both usable and actionable. Highly recommend.
This is a self-help book like no other. It is more like a good friend giving you good advice. This book is not preachy. It doesn't hit you in the head with what you should do to live your life. It is instead, friendly and suggests positive alternatives to living your life. Mr. Neuman tells stories of how famous people, born into poverty become productive, successful, and rich. These people used the power of positive thinking and never gave up until they reached their goal. People like Oprah, Buddha, Colonel Sanders. Also, like Aesops Tales, Ms. Neumann tells you life lessons about a donkey who falls into a well. The villagers start to throw dirt into the well to try to bury the donkey except the donkey does not give up and lets himself be buried. Instead, he shakes off the dirt and steps up. He continues to step up as dirt is thrown on him until he is out of the hole. The lesson is to rise above the obstacles thrown at you and keep you from setting your goal in life. Do not listen to the no’s. They are lessons in positive thinking. If you think ugly. You see ugly. If you think beautiful. You see beautiful. There are many life lessons to learn in this book told by a narrator with a soothing, friendly voice. I loved this book. I read it in two days. I could have finished it one sitting but I didn’t want it to finish I’d love to listen to the audio version of this book. I hope the author reads it. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and will not be my last. I’m going to go and look for more by this author. I will definitely buy this book for a friend and for family. As an aspiring writer. It helped me to continue writing whether it is fanfic or my novel and not listen to the “no’s.” I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley.com and the author. I am writing this review voluntarily.
Inspiring, positive, wise, thought-provoking and ... kind.
I must declare that I received a free copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. Let me say right away that I really loved this book, and I will read it again and again, at least once or twice a year to reinforce the messages. Why? Because this is not a 'how to be successful' book (although if you live by its principles you will be successful, in life if not in the usual way 'successful' is thought of). Instead, this is a book about how to make yourself free - free from the normal way of life in developed countries, i.e. always striving for promotion and buying more 'stuff', competing and feeling inadequate compared with the 'powerful' people. Don't misunderstand me, this isn't about giving up modern living and starting a farm in your back garden, it's simply about freeing yourself from conditioned thoughts and the constant struggle to seek happiness. It is about ceasing to fear ... fear of failure, fear you are not up to the task at hand, and fear you are not worthy or good enough.
Alex Neumann quotes many examples throughout this book of people who have overcome apparently insurmountable problems and come through them as stronger, more confident and, yes, more successful. This is all about not worrying about what you have (or don't have) but simply thinking positively, being kind to yourself and others, spending time on the important things in life (family, children, friends, breaking bread together) and helping others by giving of yourself, not necessarily money. It is about separating your thoughts and actions from those expected of you and thinking for yourself, not blindly following what you have been taught by parents, schools, religions or bosses. It is difficult to describe this book in ways that will inspire you to read it without putting some of you off - I am doing my best. 🙂
The book feels like it is written from the heart by a man who cares about his fellow human beings and his planet, and not by a 'corporate' author. I already know he has a good heart simply because he has a dog and a cat (I can never trust anyone who doesn't like animals).
The end result of taking his advice and living a better life will be that happiness finds you without you seeking it. We all know that oftentimes the poorest people in the world are the most contented. It's not because they have nothing to lose but because they tend to live in real communities where people help each other and can rely on each other. Read this book and you can teach yourself how to live a better, more contented, less stressful life, and find true happiness whatever happens to you.
There are a few grammatical errors and a couple of odd wording but these mean nothing because the messages get through. At times the explanations get quite philosophical and I had to read them two or three times to understand them but that's fine because it doesn't matter how long it takes you to read the book. I read it one or two chapters at a time so I could absorb the messages.
Just read it, and give it as presents to your adult children and friends. 5 stars all the way.
Harness the power of the invisible is a self-help book demonstrating a collection of the author’s knowledge and critical thinking. Although he modestly tells you that he isn’t here to teach us anything, he instead shares his insights and perspective, hoping we will see the same darkness as he does and pass-through this phase by seeing the light.
The book shows you about spatial strategy and is a guide to creating happiness in your life. Subject matters such as intent, timeframe, effort, and debugging your script are all part of the journey. Everything is written with care and with the intention to help the reader navigate through the book using its technique to reflect the same path in their own life. It is enlightening and motivating. I particularly enjoy books that make you think afterward, and this one was just that. This book is definitely worth the read. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to change their life and appreciate educational material.
I really liked all the short stories in this book. It spoke to me and connected in a way few books do anymore. I recommend it to anyone that is discouraged and feeling stuck. It's very inspirational
This is a treasure of a book as it condenses helpful tips along with wonderful anecdotes on achieving a healthy mindset, building confidence and living a purposeful life. I enjoyed the format as I can pick it up for a few minutes or for hours. The author's perspective with regard to adversity is enlightening and straight forward with stories to further his point. Thank you to Pearson Press, NetGalley and Alex Newmann for the opportunity to read this book for my review.
As the title suggests the book does help you harness your superpower. The fables and the stories make you realise that life may not be easy but it's not difficult it motivates you to move forward in life. I read the book at a slow speed as it's heavy and after reading every page you have a deep thought or many times you ponder on your life journey. I strongly recommend this book as I can’t say much in words or express but if I have to sum it up then it’s a book that tapped my invincible mind and made me feel positive everyday.
Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind by Alex Neumann is powerful self-help read that asks you to shake it off and step up! It is the new-age guide that makes one wonder at the potential of one’s mind and harness it for the better good. This book is something that would stay with me for quite some time now, and I would go back to my highlights to recall whatever I took away from this!
Divided into several chapters, this book has a fresh perspective to offer a powerful voice. Of late, I’ve been attracted to reading for growth. Having said that, this book came to me at the right time to direct me on the right path. A book that delves into multiple aspects concerning one’s life and gives practical advice to deal with challenges. It is a book that puts forth the right thing bluntly.
The author has brought in the concept of the capitalist market. This market makes us believe in consumerism, in the hustle-culture, and everything else that does rob our mental peace. Often we find ourselves drained because we’re doing things just for the sake of it, without adding any tangible value to the quality of our lives.
This book picks examples from history and fictional accounts to emphasize its point on adversity, happiness, disentanglement, thriving, passion, etc. I specifically loved the part where the author talked about intentionally pushing humans towards making humans. I suddenly remembered watching The Social Dilemma. Not to mention, that documentary has left me disturbed, and reading similar things in this book strengthened my opinion. The capitalist market is ruining our natural self for profits.
I absolutely loved the writing of this book because of its emphatic narration and realistic narrative. I didn't find it forceful or preachy but definitely, hard-hitting. The author’s writing does give a personal touch to the book as he admits his shortcomings and shares that he learned all of these things through his experiences. Proves authenticity.
If you want to read something strong, engaging, and totally relatable, go ahead and pick this one up. It is worth a read and probably, many more.
This was an incredibly well-written and knowledgable read. The author brilliantly highlights and frames the struggles we often deal with on a daily basis and gives life and meaning to those adversities, from traditions to unfounded knowledge and so much more. Then by learning to flip those adversities and turn them into a positive, the author has showcased how to frame the “invincible mind”.
One concept that stood out to me early on was the Ride the Adversity lesson, which highlights the need to take the adversity we face and not allowing ourselves to simply wallow in it. Instead, the author highlights the need to turn that adversity into a stepping stone to overcome the obstacles in our path towards happiness and our dreams, which is highlighted in a truly appropriate tale of the donkey and the well in the early chapters of the book.
The Verdict
Powerful, thought-provoking, and inspiring, author Alex Neumann’s “Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind” is a must-read book. With 2020 having dealt the majority of the world some truly difficult adversities and obstacles, the need to overcome those odds and find a path to our happiness has never been more important, the author does an incredible job of imparting this wisdom through experience and wise life-lessons that readers will be able to relate to. If you haven’t yet, grab your copy today!
I have over 20 years of experience as a clinical psychologist. This is hands down the best self-help book I have ever come across, and can not fathom why the very simple and straight-forward concepts Alex presents were never once mentioned in my grad school training or any of the countless professional development workshops I have attended over the years. If you are dealing with stress, depression, and/or anxiety, this is the book to get. But you need to read it slowly, to take it in bit by bit, and actually pause to practice what he is explaining in each section to benefit from it. You can't just skim it and expect to understand it in a way that will open your life and help you experience the freedom and ease of this very moment. I keep it by my bed and re-read sections all the time. Thank you Alex!
What an incredibly inspiring book this is! The amount of tabs I put into this book and the amount of paragraphs I highlighted is spectacular. The points Neumann touches in this book are very insightful and make you reflect upon your own life.
The anecdotes and examples Neumann uses to demonstrate his advice really add to the book, because you don't only see 'the theoretic part' of the advice, but also how that advice has been executed in the past. Some examples that are mentioned are the story of Helen Keller, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Emily Dickinson, and so on.
I flew through the first 60% of the book, and then I got slowed down a bit. This has nothing to do with the advice being less good or anything like that, but I think it's normal with a book like this that you don't necessarily connect with every part of it.
If you are in need of some encouragement in life, I would recommend this book. It contains a lot of helpful advice within its approximately 200 pages, and it's easy to digest all the advice. It's explained very easily.
This book is different from your normal self help book. AND! For everytime this book is sold, 1% of the profit will be donated to Cancer and Heart Associations. So, you buy a very inspirational book AND you donate money to a good cause. Win-win!
This is an interesting book, I rarely read self-help, but this year I have given myself the task to explore this genre a little more, some good ones, some bad ones, but this book, in particular, is so good, it is short, fast and easy to read. Alex Neumann, gives very important advice, to learn to manage your life, through the control of your mind, to begin he explains how to handle adversity from different points of view and taking some examples, which I think is super good to understand thoroughly what he is explaining. Basically, the book gives the advice to get out of your comfort zone, challenge your fears and look at your life from another angle, it teaches you to be passionate and not to give up easily, why to feel miserable if there are a million possibilities that we can follow to achieve happiness!
“You are not what happens to you. You are far greater than the sum of all events and circumstances that happen in your life. Don't identify with them. Rise above them!”
This is one of those books you will always want to keep near you. In fact, I swear this book came to me in the best time possible. I like to think of myself as a positive person, but the truth is that sometimes we go through phases in life that bring us down and make us question some things. Fortunately for me, there were some great things in this book that reminded me to put things in perspective and to reset my mindset. I feel like the title doesn’t convey the true meaning of the book because when I first read it I was expecting a technical, rigid book... but instead I got a nice, wholesome conversation. It was easy for me to comprehend a lot of things the author said because I already try to follow this kind of mindset in my life, but I think this book would open a lot of people's eyes to their attitudes and thoughts. The book is composed of ten chapters and a small conclusion, focusing on different essential aspects that contribute to our happiness. I personally identified better with topics like how you shouldn’t care about other people’s opinions and to not let fear stop you from your goals, because that was what I needed to hear - or in this case, read. One thing I also liked about this book is how it’s filled with stories and examples. The author reinforces his lessons through both fictitious and real inspirational stories. Every story presented went really well with what the author was trying to say, and I appreciate how he incorporated people from different backgrounds (from fashion to technology)! There is just one thing I wish was different. I had the opportunity to read a finished, published copy, so I was surprised to find some errors throughout the book. Not only that, but I found sentences that didn’t make a lot of sense and were written in a confusing way. It was nothing too bad and I was able to understand everything, but unfortunately this makes the book look a bit unprofessional. I wish the book was revised a few more times before actually being released to the market, but in all honesty it was not a huge deal to me because I was more focused on the content and these things can easily be fixed in the next edition. I’m not sure if an audiobook version is available, but I think it would be a great option to consider when picking up this book. Like I said, the book feels like a conversation, so I think that would work well in that specific format. Despite the errors, I honestly think the book is really good and it’s completely worth reading. It’s motivating and very easy to read and to go through. It’s one of those books you can (and should) revisit from time to time, just so you can refocus on what’s really important. I recommend it for everyone who wants to live their best, happiest life!
***A big thank you to the author Alex Neumann for the free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review***
*This book was kindly sent to me by Alex Neumann in exchange for an honest review.
I recently go contacted by Alex Neumann, the author of Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind who kindly sent me a paperback version of his book. I was a little afraid in the beginning as to me, self-help books are all one or the other. This one was actually very interesting (4 stars, you guessed it!) and I would like to share with you a little more about it.
A rather short book everyone can read.
The book runs on a little bit less than 200 pages, which is quite « normal » for a self-help book. I like it because I tend to get bored when self-help books are 300+ pages: I do not really know why, but it just happens. Thus, I think the size of this one is perfect: long enough to convey its message (we will go back to the message later in the review) but short enough not to get boring.
I can’t, however, not tell you that the « format » of the book surprised me. This is actually the only « negative » point I will give to it, even though it is only my thoughts and can totally be different for you. The chapters are indeed subdivided in subchapters, which is fine (you know how much I love organization!) but my problem is that paragraphs are… really short. I mean, paragraphs take around three lines and then, there is a little blank space and the next paragraph starts. Personally, I would have organized the paragraphs differently, maybe using less paragraphs and packing similar ideas together. It Is obviously not a « big » problem as it did not prevent me from enjoying the book but my academic brain is just too focused on the form of books not to mention it in the review.
An interesting way to convey a message: from the particular to the general.
Let’s go back to what I like because I love writing about it far more than about what I like less. I really enjoyed how the author demonstrated his point by using particular experiences. He talks about one to three celebrities (Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan etc.) and then takes a universal tip out of their experience. I found that really interesting as, first, he uses people who succeeded in different realms (so that everyone can relate to at least one example) and then, it helps make the whole book less theoretical, something I have a problem with in most self-help books.
Using folklore and stories to convey the message
His other way to convey his messages is using little proverbs and stories coming from different countries, which I really enjoyed. It is a way to change a little bit from people’s experience and make it all a little bit « lighter » and more digest. We really feel by reading all of these stories that this book is a summary of the author’s life experiences, which I found really interesting in itself. You have understood it: one of the goals of the book is to share one point of view created through one lifetime.
Debunking market success
Last but not least, I would like to talk about the « message » of the book. There are many « submessages » that I will not cover with you today but one of the things I loved is that the main message is really connected to my own beliefs. The book redefines « success » by showing that « market success » is a fallacy. I can’t tell you it is an ode to minimalism, it would be false and just an interpretation, but at least it debunks the myth of « earning more to be happier ». It is my kind of self-help book, a book that does not get into the « Hustle society ». Reading this book is a good way to be reminded of what is important (and what Is not).
I would say that what I love even more than this « non-hustle » related vision of success is the honesty of the author. Usually, when a book goes against the « hustle society », we are told that living naked in the forest is the solution. Even though you can totally choose to live naked in a forest somewhere, I do not think it is relatable for most people. What I love here is that the author says clearly that money is important, but explains why it should not be at the core of our definition of « success ».
The recurring idea of the author is « shake it off and step up! », a sentence you will understand form the very beginning of the book. Basically, you need to learn to use adversity and hardships in order to build your success. You can’t just be « born successful » and you need to change your mindset: failure and adversity aren’t a problem, they are a way (to get better).
"Spatial Strategy to Success and Happiness." This is the subtitle of Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind by Alex Neumann, but do not be misled into thinking it is a self-help book. Since childhood, Neumann has been interested in studying how some people thrive during challenging times and how, with this determination, society can make the world a better place. This book contains the author's ideas based on these observations; ideas that he has applied to his thought process to develop an "Invincible Mind".
Neumann applies moral stories and real-life scenarios to illustrate the power of a determined mind. He urges readers to never give up, even in the face of adversity, but to use these hardships in alternative ways. Neumann uses examples from Buddhism and Christianity as well as history to show the potential of every individual.
Many self-help books give step-by-step guides to success and dismiss mental and neurological difficulties. Whilst these authors may encourage readers to reach their goals, Neumann acknowledges that it is not always possible. Yet, this does not result in failure. Neumann's insight into the workings of the world reveals there is far more to happiness than an end goal. There is more to life than being the best, being famous and being successful, but more often than not, these lessons are hard-fought. With this book, Neumann attempts to stop readers in their tracks, to stop their destructive power, to realise their true potential and look at the world afresh.
Neumann writes as though he is speaking in front of an audience. Whilst this adds honesty and passion, it disrupts the flow of the text. The book lacks grammar and is oftentimes repetitive. As a proofreader, it is difficult not to pick up on these errors, but it indeed makes the author sound human. Neumann does not use the complicated language of psychologists, does not pretend to have qualifications in counselling or such like but has his readers' best interests at heart.
Easy and quick to read, Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind is a book that stays with you long after completing. It contains so many analogies and examples that readers will want to highlight, share and, hopefully, apply in their day-to-day lives.
I thought this was a very interesting read. It challenges you in many ways. This is one of those books you will need to keep on your shelf and refer back to often.
It has a lot of great insights and ideas that really made me question how I was thinking about things in my life. Definitely a great self help reference for the mind.
If you like self help and books that challenge your mind, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
I am glad I read this book because it is exactly what I needed to make me evaluate the direction that I’m heading towards career-wise and how my mental health has been lately.
I am one of the hustle culture success-seeking Gen Zs. Not only that, I’ve been naturally ambitious since I was a child and I generally consider it to be a positive quality that I possess. But I have to admit that everything that this book said about the market system made sense. The book mentions how capitalism and marketing make us believe that we need all these things to be happy (wealth, material possessions, fame, etc) and we don’t question it because we are too busy being a part of it. We are too busy making money and we don’t actually think about what we are seeking and why.
This short book managed to cover a lot of areas. There were many examples from history to substantiate some philosophical points. There were real-life and fictionalized examples.
The writing style of this book is slightly essay-like but it is engaging and easy to understand. The content of the book was not as basic as I have found many self-help books to be. The author tried to make us look at things in a different way rather than just preaching.
This book also gave a very interesting perspective on adversities. The key point being that having courage in the face of it completely changes how you can deal with them.
This book made me question my definition of success for myself and made me evaluate my sense of self-love. That will be my biggest takeaway from this book and I’ll surely revisit the many quotes I highlighted.
I did find some advice to be too idealistic. One can’t just decide to get over something by deciding it. There are some emotions that require the passage of time to get over.
This book gave me so many new perspectives as well as positive ways of looking at your life. The author did not try to oversimplify things that I have seen people do in this genre. He delved deep into the concepts that he talked about and clearly explained the advice that he gave.
This is a very logical and inspirational book. It encourages us to seek mental peace and gives us tips on how to live a better life.
This book has many life lessons of people who dreamt big and made things happen out of nowhere. It challenges you to create, build, invent, explore, and dare to go outside your comfort zone.
The story of the donkey who falls in a well and the story of the twenty-dollar bill are my two favorites.
When a donkey fell in a well, his owner saw no other option but to bury him alive. He brought a couple of people to help him throw sacks of dirt into the well. Every time dirt fell on the donkey, it would shake it off and step on it until it was finally free. What I learned here is that in the face adversity, we need to step up and make the most of the bad situation. Yep, the pile of dirt became the road to freedom for this donkey. The author uses this story as an analogy to the load of criticism, mockery, and negativity that is dumped on you. You must not let any of that heavy load bury you. Instead, you must shake it off and step up to victory.
The other story is about the $20 bill. A speaker showed a $20 dollar bill to an audience and asked them who wanted the $20. All hands went up. He then crumpled the bill and asked again, who still wants it? All the hands went up again. He finally, stomped on the bill making it dirty and asked once more who wanted the $20 bill. All the hands we still raised. The lesson here is that no matter what the speaker had done to the money, the $20 bill didn't decrease in value. It was still worth $20. The same scenario plays out in our lives. Things happen that are out of our hands and make us feel worthless. We must never succumb to these thoughts no matter what. We are like the $20 bill. We will never lose our value.
