Encounters With Holiness: My Interviews with: Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Dorothy Day, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, Catherine de Hueck Doherty, Walter ... O'Connor, Mother Angelica, and Many Others
This is a book of interviews with famous, holy people. IT is a true interview style, with the questions and answers. I especially enjoyed the interviews with Fr. Walter Ciszek and Fred Rogers. Nothing was earth shattering for me - but it was cool to see the diversity of people and circumstances within the church.
The best parts of this book are the Preface and Introduction. The author's insights in these are not to be missed. He has some very interesting takes on the concept of holiness and quotes notable others, to underline his thoughts. His mix of people he explores as holy are the predictable like Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, as well as some not so predictable, like Father Walter Ciszek and Archbishop Joseph M. Raya. Many of the profiles are interview pieces and Fr. Catoir is a asks good questions. His insights are worthwhile and well presented.
In the end, Fr. Catoir recognizes the down side of this work is that only two of his fourteen subjects are lay people. He offers a sad explanation of that saying there are just too many holy lay people to pick only a few to profile. He suggests that another book like this, of lay people only, is in order. At the end of this work, he pens a three page thumbnail of the evolution of laity in the Church. It proves his point. Get working on that Lay Holy book, Father Catoir, numbers of recognizable lay people just get higher and higher every day.
