Bad Nana #1

Muita Idade, Pouco Juízo

Rate this book
A wickedly funny new series for ages six and up from the creator of Where Bear?, Pass It On and the Pom Pom series, with colour illustrations throughout.

Jeanie’s Grandma is BAD. Not bad like a vampire or a gangster or anything, more like… up to no good. Sometimes she can be a bit embarrassing but most of the time she’s REALLY fun, especially when she gets Jeanie involved in her mischievous schemes. Everyone says she’s old enough to know better… but she doesn’t seem to care one bit. In fact, Jeanie thinks she might quite like it!

Bad Nana is a deliciously wicked new series for ages six and up, told through the eyes of 8-year-old Jeanie. Gorgeously illustrated throughout with vibrantly coloured spreads, Bad Nana’s naughty exploits will shock and appal – and make you snort with laughter!

This book was a good read! The cat with the many surprise faces was so cute! Grandma Bad Nana was one interesting lady! I liked how useful her big purse was and her many bright ideas. It's too bad that Jeanie didn't like her younger brother at all. My son read this book and he questioned me why Jeanie hate Jack so much and I explained to him that maybe her younger brother did all of the things she didn't like just like he didn't like when his younger sister kicked down his Jenga tower as he finished building it. But to justify how Jeanie didn't like her younger brother just a little bit was not my favorite part because Jeanie experienced bullies from Georgina and the museum guy, she should know how it feels to be disliked. I enjoyed the park story most.

Readers will follow Jeanie, 7 as she introduced her family and extended family. She has a younger brother named Jack whom she found annoying. She and her brother spent most of their days with their grandmother nicknamed Bad Nana. One day at their favorite park, they found themselves and other park goers unhappy by the many rules placed around the park by the new park keeper. Bad Nana decided to take actions against the rules by using something in her purse while Jeanie and Jack kept a lookout for the park keeper. The fun didn't last long and Bad Nana found herself with a new plan. The third story happened when Jeanie and her class visited the local museum. There are three stories within this book.

Bad Nana: Older Not Wiser was a quick read with fun colorful illustrations. I liked emphasis on words and colors to show the characters' feelings. The illustration of the museum guy with notes was awesome as well as inside Bad Nana's purse. The lace observation Jeanie talked about Granny Rose was hilarious. My son can relate with Jeanie when she talked about calling someone an aunt who's not really an aunt at all. My son called my best friend aunt just because I knew her a long time she's practically family. It's easy reading this book because it feels like Jeanie was talking to readers.

Received a copy from the publisher, after meeting Sophy Henn and I could tell this book was going to be good fun. Had me chuckling to myself as bad nana gets up to all sorts of mischief. A very easy read with the most beautiful illustrations. Can’t wait to share this with my niece when she is a little older!

My skin is clear, my crops are thriving! What a delightful little book for young and young inside readers! The illustrations and colour scheme are to die for, Bad Nana is hilarious and I felt a true kinship with her. Wickedly smart old lady who cannot stop before an injustice (normally caused by a stuffy old white man of authority or a privileged snotty girl!) Evem though she's no saint!

Favorite bit, and definitely something I'll do in 20 years or so.....poor old bill.....dead so soon.....and I can only remember him by this very handsomely placed bench! Children, look extra sad! Brilliant!!!

Anyway. I need a lemon sherbet!

I received this as a free ebook from Netgalley. This does not affect my review.

Bad Nana is super (I think I have a new role model!). Bold, fun drawings illustrate the mischievous adventures of cheeky Nana and sweet Jeanie and their extended family. The relationship between Jeanie and Nana is just lovely, absolutely joyful. This book is absolutely perfect for confident readers looking for their first step into longer books, or as a class or bedtime read for Y2. I will definitely be buying it for our library.

A hilarious read about a young girl and her misbehaving Bad Nana. Bad Nana is definitely not your typical grandma. Bad Nana dresses all in black, carries a shiny black bag that contains all manner of things (including a whoopee cushion), has a walking stick (which she likes to use as a mischief making weapon) and occasionally wears a pink turban as it gives her more twinkle. Bad Nana is a little bit embarrassing, rather eccentric and is very much not acting her age.

Jeanie lives with her mum, dad and a thing that makes lots of whiny sounds and answers to the name of Jack. She lives exactly eight minutes and thirty six seconds away from one of her three grandmas. It is at this grandma’s house that Jeanie likes to spend lots of her time, and it would be even better if annoying Jack didn’t have to spend lots of his time there too.

You see this grandma isn’t your typical polite and pleasant old lady. She can not seem to go anywhere without getting involved in just a tiny bit of trouble; popping unwanted items into other people’s trolleys at the supermarket, disrupting line-dancing classes or getting locked in the village hall, Nana and naughty go together.

Nana has a knack of making a trip to the most ordinary of places a lot more interesting. So it is of no surprise that a visit to the park and a class trip to the local history museum don’t go as smoothly as perhaps they should. Because wherever Bad Nana goes, trouble and mischief are never far away…

Sophy Henn has written a rollickingly good read full of plenty of moments that will have readers laughing-out-loud. Bad Nana is as fun and as bright as the dazzling neon pink illustrations that fill the pages. Each page is a delight with its funny illustrations and text written in all manner of funky fonts.

Messages on friendship and bullying are sensitively explored throughout and there is a lovely moment towards the end where Jeanie takes inspiration from her Bad Nana and speaks out.

This is one grandma who certainly is not old enough to know better and Jeanie wouldn’t have her any other way. If only all nana’s were this much fun!

This was a bit disappointing. I really loved the idea of a bad grandma although the nana in the book is kind of tame. I guess part of the point is that she's not exactly horrendous, she's just nice but naughty sometimes. but then it made some things like a whole page devoted to the contents of her hand bag pretty uninteresting as it wasn't exactly like she had a devil's totem or a pet spider or anything in there!

Honestly, Nana just isn't that bad or surprising. The stories are very simple. This might get a little giggle from some very little kids but it isn't that exciting, the characters don't grow and change that much so it doesn't stay with you, in your heart.

The pictures were somewhat funny although I found a mistake in at least one and I wasn't looking too hard. The bright pink some may funny, and may hurt the eyes of others. It's a simple style of drawing that I thought went well with the story.

The main thing about the story is that it rambles. The kid is trying to tell you about their grandma and while the author is trying to assume the voice of the child perhaps they try a little too hard to ramble in about nothing.

There are a few incidents in the story, the main ones being an intro to nana, a park incident and a museum. Before we get to any there are long rambles and the child seems to meander. It can be frustrating and I felt unengaged for a while. I felt the voice could have been kept by tightening up the prose better.

Jeanie is seven years old, with a large extended family including her mum, dad, younger brother, three nana's including Bad Nana and her aunts, uncles and cousins too.

Her Nana isn't bad in the traditional sense like stealing or other crime committing, though she does love the stories that come with them from others like in the news. She is an eccentric character who loves dressing in all black and glitzy earrings and has a fond addictive love of sherbet lemon sweets.

Through mini tales we see how she has a set park bench, gets to go along and help at the younger kids school and go on the trips too, she can put all the men in their places too handling them effortlessly! She sticks up for the kids in hilarious ways and is a very creative grandmother.

Overall, it's huge fun, shows family love, has some really cool designed characters in simple drawing graphic style that's really effective and bold artwork throughout the whole book with popping colours for contrast.

Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!

Here's the thing: writing wise, I really liked this. It was clever and sharp and silly (Jeanie describes her brother as a "whiny noise named Jack"), and the characters had fun quirks and characteristics. BUT. The font keeps switching on certain words and the size would grow or shrink on other words, and the constant change began to give me a headache.

By page 36, I truly wanted to give up. I kept going for another few pages, buoyed by the fun writing, but then I decided that I couldn't keep hurting my brain this way. So here's the thing: if you aren't bothered by shifting fonts mixed with highlighter pink everything? Fun. Cute. You'll dig. But if you, like me, grow weary of the TOTALLY up and down way of writing ALL THE words then you might just need to PUT DOWN the book and politely recommend it to people less easily affected.

I loved this.

Bad Nana is such a wonderfully cheeky story and I can imagine a five to eight year old (or twenty-three year old) enjoying this as well. Jeanie and her nana (Bad Nana) have a heartwarming relationship. The Nana isn't bad, she's just mischievous and has her own form of justice that may well require her to dress up as Henry VIII sometimes. She has a dislike of nasty adults (and children) and a love of lemon sherberts. Once she crunches one, she'll have an idea. The book is separated into mini stories about Jeanie and her Nana getting into trouble and out of it again.

Such a sweet story with gorgeous illustrations.

Such a wholesome little children's story! The characters are loveable,Bad Nana is a true and proper legend,I have no words to properly describe just how fabulous she is.The narrator is also absolutely adorable and the pair of her and Bad Nana is terrific. This made me giggle out loud at times and was just a joy.
The artwork was absolutely stunning and the use of colour blew me out of the park.

Easy reading and a stunning presentation - Jeanie is a brilliant narrator and has you chuckling along as she tells you all about her 'Bad Nana' - who in turn will have you hoping you're like her when you grow old! Fighting for those that can't stick up for themselves, whilst being cheeky and having a lot of fun along the way she gives you a good laugh and the odd smirk...
Kids everywhere will love Bad Nana!

I can’t even stress enough on the fact that I JUST LOVE CHILDREN’S BOOKS. I don’t care how immature that sounds, they make me happy, and I love books that make me happy. Of course all books do, but these are just too damn delightful, I mean Bad Nana, Farqua haha, THIS IS GOLD. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 I am just never gonna stop reading Children’s books, and everyone should try them sometimes. Trust it me, they’re totally worth it.

Three short stories. The first introduces Bad Nana, the second is an adventure in the park, and the third is a trip to the local history Museum. In all of these stories, Bad Nana stands up for those who need it, adds much-needed humor and delight into the day, and is just generally amusing. It’s a fun and funny early chapter book.

This was a fun, heavily-illustrated primary book. It was VERY British and reminded me a lot of the Charlie and Lola books. I thought it was cute and amusing, and very likely appealing to its age group.
