In the great tradition of classic crime fiction, Imposter took us behind the scenes of a tense murder case. This time, however, there was a twist of a criminal profiler-turned-sleuth as the narrator. Smart, empathetic, and yet also believably flawed, his character was a shining piece of this quick, easy read. On top of that, though, was a layered plot centering around a small Irish town. With standard village vibes, it made for an everyone-is-a-suspect kind of a read. I do have to say that the large number of credible suspects as red herrings kept me from guessing who the serial killer really was on my own. Revealed in a brilliant twist that I never saw coming, it was both perfectly set up and also hidden with care. To be frank, it was the perfect kind of revelation for this whodunnit lover.
All said and done, despite a jarring amount of “head-hopping” in the narration, I still inhaled this book in one single sitting. Coming in at under 300 pages and with plenty of short, cliffhanger chapters, I couldn’t stop my fingers flying through the pages at speed. I mean, not only was there quite a bit of introspective storytelling that made me connect with Alexander, but the last half of the novel was an action-packed race as the police tried to get their man…or woman. Don’t get me wrong, it had a definite Golden Age charm despite the serious crimes as it felt somewhat softer than many modern-day thrillers. So if you like your crime fiction with a psychological edge, grab this first book in a newly re-released series. It was a super fast read that I couldn’t put down. Rating of 4 stars.
