If you die in the battle of good versus evil, maybe it's time to change sides.
Beno doesn't remember much about dying. Only that it hurt, he probably deserved it, and there were no snacks in Death's waiting room. When he is reborn as a dungeon core and he joins the fantastical Dungeon Core Academy, he learns a secret: the bad guys are really the good guys...and he's a bad guy now.
As well as learning how to make a deadly dungeon lair and populate it with murderous monsters, he is taught three golden rules:
Every hero in the world wants to kill him now. But heroes are made from squishy things. And Beno can create monsters who love to tear squishy things apart.
Now that he's the master of his own dungeon, treasure-seeking adventurers are sure to hunt for him. It's up to Beno and his army of creatures to change how the stories all end. It's time to stop the good guys from winning.
Join Beno's diabolical journey in book 3 of the Dungeon Core Academy series
This third volume is as short at 250+ pages (100+ pages more than Volume 1-2), with 35 chapters, and has more action scenes than the first two volumes put together, . Author is still not funny. He tries and tries, and fails miserably. His word play and supposedly funny moments weren't remotely funny. Author describes his view on why his "books are light novel series and not epics". The title is Dungeon Core Academy and yet, the Academy has no merit, no authority or jurisdiction over 2 Dungeon Cores, that they sold off to a village of Desert people in Wrong Turn (Wrotun). Author has Academy Observer Bolton visit the "Dungeons" regularly, but like I've said, they have no reason to be visiting the Dungeons. The Academy's interventions finished when they failed Beno and Jahn from the Dungeon Core trials. From then on, the Academy has no merit nor jurisdiction with its former students that did not graduate so title of novel series has no reason to be. Beno, the main character, is a Dungeon Core, that does whatever the heck it wants, improves and levels-up his "Dungeon" security system to protect the mana springs for the Seekers and the Wrotun villagers. A wanted Scribe, hides out with Beno, and writes about his "accomplishments". Little by little the "Dungeon" gets visited more and more by adventurers and "heroes". Author continues to describe and write about things that are unnecessary and useless to push forward the plot arcs and this story. This is the first Dungeon Core series that I find is well done. I discovered with this well done Dungeon Core series, that the theme and plot arcs are lackluster and rather on the flat side. There is just so much a Dungeon Core (that has no body, no power or skills). I have read quite a bit of light novel series having to do with Dungeon Cores: Dungeon Maker, Dungeon Hunter, Death March to a Parallel World Rhapsody, Arifureta series, Lazy Dungeon Master, amongst others. Most of the other Dungeon Core series written by westerners, are missing the action-adventure, the technical details and most forget to actually center it around the Dungeon building and Governance. (Level-up and get stronger).
Beno is a fun character. Not always the smartest. But he takes care of his people (monsters). No respawns here. I very much liked this dungeon story and am hoping for many more to come. This dungeon is a character. Sometimes the humor gets a bit much for me. I found it very good reading. Score: 8.1 out of 10
As far as dungeon core books go, this series has been fun and unique from the start. Core Beno and Core Jahn are.. special, and I can't wait for more of their adventure.
The third installment is a romp. Beno and Jahn are still in their neighboring dungeons, but now they have to make a community. The the core’s boogeyman comes calling. It was a fun read and great addition to the series.
