They say the dead don’t speak. That’s a lie. They speak to Kat Justice, but most of the time, she chooses not to hear them.
I’m a Nightwatch agent, a nightblood charged with enforcing the supernatural laws. Humans can’t know the shit that goes bump in the night is real. It’s sweaty, tough work, with crappy pay, but I love it.
Things would be perfect if not for my secret.
Pureblood Nightbloods can’t see or hear the dead. The fact that I can exposes my mixed breeding. I’m not meant to exist, and if the council find out about my secret it’s the executioners block for me.
Keeping a lid on my ghost whisperer ability is a must.
So, when my gramps orders me to head to the arse end of nowhere, a nowhere that just happens to be the most haunted place on the bloody map, I’m a little confused.
This transfer doesn’t jive with trying to keep the ghost chat to a minimum.
But with my golem partner and gargoyle companion in tow, I’m sure I can figure out why I’ve been sent to this weird coastal town. I mean, they even have a ghost bar.
You’d think the local souls would be eager to chew my ear off, right? Wrong.
For the first time in forever, the dead aren’t talking.
Now I need to know why...
A kick ass Urban Fantasy Adventure filled with fey, demons, vampires, gargoyles and golems.
Debbie Cassidy lives in England, Bedfordshire, with her three kids and very supportive husband. Coffee and chocolate biscuits are her writing fuels of choice, and she is still working on getting that perfect tower of solitude built in her back garden. Obsessed with building new worlds and reading about them, she spends her spare time daydreaming and conversing with the characters in her head. She writes Urban Fantasy, Romance, Fantasy and Reverse Harem Fantasy. All her books contain plenty of action, romance and twisty plots.
Interesting world building, and magic system- but I'm hoping the characters will grow on me a bit more in the next books.
So in this one we have our fl, Kat Justice, who is a Nightblood (vampire) working for the Nightwatch (Supernatural Agency) who has just been reassigned by her Grandfather to work in the strange town of Scorchwood. While riding into town she notices a huge influx of ghosts (which she shouldn't be able to see and her ability is hush hush) but that's not the only thing that's a little off.
Kat along with her golem & gargoyle sidekicks- Henri and Tris meet their new Nightwatch team members- Jay, Mai, and Kris. But dispense with the into's because there is an active case that require all hands on deck. Missing humans, supernatural mishaps, and a possible ghostly connection all converge in this confusing case.
Can the new group solve this mystery in time, or will everyone's secrets keep them from connecting the dots quickly enough?
So all in all this was a decent read, but holy heck was everything just horny horny horny. Literally almost every character introduction (random side characters too) were dripping with teenage level of horny dialogue and hormones.
But the ending was tense and I am really interested in the baddies background and the h's childhood and potential powers.
If you are looking for a fun wholesome urban fantasy /YA then this is your series. It’s set for 16+ age groups and based in the Same world as the night watch academy. Kat Justice is like a paranormal nancy drew and she has a gang of her super natural buddies to help her. The characters are mid 20s . I liked the dialogue and the story, it’s fun and cute but you could tell there was more the characters, depth just waiting to be explored. If you are looking for a series for your teenage /new adult who doesn’t need a lot of romance and wants more adventure and mystery then this is the series for you. Wholesome, fun, intriguing. It leaves you guessing. I really loved Kat the character she displays loyalty , strength of self, normal amount of self doubt but doesn’t let it get to her too much, she is honest and fun. There is witty banter between the characters. The MC isn’t the stereotypical “nightblood” so there isn’t any gory blood worship.
3.5 stars. Well we kind of got tossed right in the mix right out of the gate here. I'm liking the characters so far. I'm familiar with the "world" from Debbie's other series that I've read. I'm not sure there was a lot of "world building" really, so I'm not sure how someone would feel just starting out in this world. Of course just like this author's other series there is a lot going on here and tons of mystery surrounding everything. My biggest issue so far.. is that we start in the middle of the story. Like there is a lot of backstory that is slowly filling in here, where if we had just started at the beginning.. say in our FMC's childhood then maybe I would have a better grasp of what is happening to the FMC. The author is slowly filling in the blanks as things happen but its usually like after the fact doesn't add or build on the story but merely explains things away, sometimes even without the depth of detail that I would have liked.
Kat Justice, our FMC has been sent off to BFE with her guardians a golem.. with some really person like tendencies, and a Gargoyle with a penchant for trashy romance books (yea she is my favorite character in this whole book lol). I see some have tagged this as YA.. I'm on the fence here.. I mean nothing really happens in this book that would make it not YA but at the same time there are lots of innuendos etc. I think I'll definitely have to follow the series a bit before I decide if its ok for my teenage nieces lol. Upon arriving in BFE Kat immediately notices the ghost population is in an uproar and there is definitely something out of wack in this place. Meanwhile back home, the place is in an uproar over the death of a head Weaver dude who happens to be a friend of the family. During the detective work with her new partners Kat discovers what is happening in this new town is way more closely aligned with her past.. Though there really isn't any in detail explanations of how and why.. maybe those will come later.
This book did wrap up pretty nicely for the most part. I mean its obvious that there is more to come but it had a pretty good stopping point.. even if I still don't really understand what is going on in this town lol. I'm down to see how this plays out at least.
No world building whatsoever. Probably a spinoff from other series but I don't know which. So the whole thing was just confusing, half the time I wasn't sure of who, what, why, where or how. Ends in a cliffhanger.
Debbie Cassidy knows how to create a story that captures your attention and does not let up.
Ghost of a Chance follows Kat Justice, who we may know as Indigo Justice's cousin from The Nightwatch Academy series. Which I love how this author connects her books in some way.
Kat is a funny and snarky character, just how i like them, that had me rolling from the start. She is such a bad a@@ girl that has a secret of her own. She is more than just a Nightwatch agent, and if that something more were to ever get out, she could be in serious trouble. But with the help of her gargoyle Tris, who loves romance novels. And Henri, her Golem partner who is tasked with helping and protecting her any way he can. Kat gets the job done every time. But this new assignment she has introduces her to a whole new team. One that works together very well, and extends their help on this new case. But there is more than meets the eye here, and things are not what they appear.
Seriously though guys, this was awesome. The characters are well written, as always with Debbie, the plot just sucks you in. And we get such a good rich UF story, with a side of romance. This first look shows us friendships that will start, hopefully romnace that will happen, and leaves us wondering just what is going to happen next. Another great series from this author. Which is why is at the top of my go to list.
3.5* The characters haven't yet quite grown on me in this one (other than Henri!), hoping it picks up a bit more with introducing the other MMCs in the next one...but this did provide a good introduction and gave a good amount of background and world building!
This is Debbie Cassidy's long awaited venture back into straight up Urban Fantasy and I must say it doesn’t disappoint. Set in the same world as her Shadow Weaver series this storey follows Indigo's Cousin Kat Justice with her small Gargoyle protector Triss ( who loves everything cock) and Bodyguard Henri.
The book has a really good storey line - different to most other UF stories and is very entertaining full of action, intrigue and mystery.
There are also some other wonderful characters whom I think will grow as further books are released.
There are one liners and innuendos that again will probably continue and hopefully ramp up in later books as they add some dark, dirty and sarcastic humour as an example Triss loves and is a connoisseur of everything Cock.
The characters in Debbie’s books are normally in their 20's and older so I don’t think the series I don’t think would be suitable for a young teen but definitely for a young adult as I know Debbie will bring in some sex and heat as the series develops although it will most likely be in moderation when compared to her RH books.
It did not take me long to become completely engrossed in this new series starter. I am a fan of the author’s and this new one is her foray back into straight urban fantasy, and I’m so glad. I read RH, but straight up UF is my favorite. Anyway, back to this book. Kat is a Nightblood, but she’s a special case: not a pureblood. She must keep it a secret, however, as she’ll be killed if found out. Unfortunately, she may have to give up her secret at her new posting as there’s much more going on that she should be able to see, and if she’s to save the lives of 12 kidnapped humans, she may have to come out. I loved this book from start to finish. Well-written, great storyline, and amazing characters. I didn’t even know who was the villain until the end; I had no idea. I highly recommend this book! I was provided a copy, and I voluntarily reviewed it.
Kat is a Nightblood (vampire), however she's not a pureblood. She has powers that pureblood Nightblood don't possess, and if someone finds out, she'll die. She works in the Nightwatch to make sure that rogue supes don't ruin the natural glamour and magic that Earth has, but when she's sent to work in a city in the middle of nowhere, her secret powers are what will keep her alive.
I liked the story and how the supes were just labeled as vampires or werewolves; however, I felt like this book missed the adrenaline feelings and the page-turning addiction that I found in other series from Debbie Cassidy that I read.
This was a fun story. Full of lots of action a bit of sass. There is no sex in this book but I doesn't need it. The story is great without it. Lots of different supernaturals in this book and a few I have never heard of. Can't wait to read the next book to see what happens next.
Set in the same world as her Shadow Weaver series, Ghost of a Chance features a cousin of the MC, Kat, who is harbouring a secret that could get her killed: she's a half breed and has no idea what the other half of her is. Sent to a rural outpost to work with a group of Night watch enforcers, she works out pretty early on that she's been sent here to hide, but unfortunately it won't be that easy.
I liked Kat well enough, although she's not my favourite of Debbie's MC (that spot is still held by Willa!). She's got all sort of secret, many of which have even been hidden for herself. She comes across as much more young and nieve than a lot of Debbie's typical heroine, sort of because of Tris, her gargoyle/mother figure who is assigned to protect her and her fractured mind, but also because she doesn't come across as very...exoerienced I want to say, probably because she can never really be herself, due to the huge secret she is hiding!
Whilst Debbie says this isn't RH, there's a range of side characters to be oote tial love interests. Kris, a demon, who I liked, Killion, a Hell Hound who I really liked, even though he's barely in the book and only says a few words, Henri, her golum who is technically only a construct and not a real person, or, the only character who truly gripped me, the random guy, possibly formarian, trapped in the basement who is clearly bad news. He sort of reminds me of Seb from Debbie's Arcana series, who I totally love.
Henri seems like the only one presented as a viable love interest, but there is no romance in this one, though I'm assuming it's coming later...
All in all, it's Debbie, so you can't go wrong, but (currently) this hasn't knocked any of her previous books off my current favourites shelf...yet!
A Ghost of a Chance is pure Urban Fantasy, offering an action packed adventure that edges the line between thriller and magical mystery.
Kat Justice, much like her cousin, Indigo at the Nightwatch Academy, is more than just a Justice... and far more than most people believe. Sent to a secluded Nightwatch stronghold by her powerful grandfather, Kat settles in with her assigned Golem, Henri, and her protective Gargoyle, Tris. Their mission? Discover who/what is killing the humans of this sleepy little town. Easy, right?
Blood and talent blend to bring this tale to life, twisting through the rules and regulations as easily as water, while bending the 'known' with the 'impossible' to thrust a narrative that shapes a brand new, yet familiar, world. It's fast, snarky, dangerous and revealing. I'm eager to see what happens in book 2!
Pros: ~ Spin off from the NightWatch Academy Series, but you do NOT have to read that first. If you do, you'll have a better understanding of the people, world and races, but the narrative does a good job of painting that picture even without prior experience. No characters from that series appear here, just a name or two. ~ World building, its unique and stand apart. ~ True UF. There is no romance here, though perhaps a touch of flirting tossed around. There may be a romance in the future, but that is not the point of this series. And this will NOT be a RH. ~ Henri. The concept!! Love it. I want to see more of this connection... and I am done now to prevent spoilers. ;)
Cons: ~ Little hard to fall into in the beginning, felt rushed or confusing. ~ Maybe it was just me, but it felt short.
* I received an ARC of this novel from the author to enjoy. This is my voluntary, unbiased opinion and review. *
Set in the Nightwatch universe we meet Kat Justice a nightblood and cousin to Indigo Justice that we know from the Nightwatch Academy series. Kat has a secret, one that only a few people know because it means she's not a pureblood , one that she must keep hidden or be killed.
In this first book she is sent to investigate a case by her grandfather with her Golem partner Henri and her gargoyle protector Tris they are sent on a mission to Scorchwood where they met up with their new team, together they must solve the case of 12 missing humans but everything is not as it seems and Kat has to risk sharing her secret with a team who hold secrets of there own .....
We are given a fantastic kick butt heroine in the series just like the Academy series. Debbie Cassidy does a fantastic job at giving us that as well as a fantastic world to lose ourselves in. The descriptions are fantastic and you really feel a part of the story. We have a great team of characters that all have their own lives, quirks and signature personalities that will get your pulse racing.
Debbie Cassidy always delivers a fantastic read that you can not put down! I have read four of her books in about a week (if only I didn't have to work) and I'm in need of more! I can't wait to read book 2 as I am expecting another fantastic adventure.
I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed the world and I enjoyed the plot of A GHOST OF A CHANCE.
The characters are my favorite part of this series so far. I want to know more about each and every one of them.
The plot was mysterious and full of suspense. Everything happened at a great pace. There is so much more we need to know about the world and the team, but I am interested in learning all the secrets there are to reveal.
I look forward to GIVE UP THE GHOST.
* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a great book!! I love Kat and cannot wait to find out more about what she is. I also can't wait to learn more about each of the characters in this book. They all seem to have an air of mystery about them that leaves you wanting to learn more. Can't wait for book 2!
The first book in this new series set in an interesting world where there's your usual supernaturals by different names. I definitely felt the spookyness as I was reading this with the ghostly action and I'm really interested to see where the story goes after this.
WARNING! Cliffhanger. Kind of a smallish one in that it’s literally the last few lines, but it’s a life changing one, and more of a book-hook for book two.
Kat Justice is a Nightwalker, or at least that is what everyone believes. Her unique abilities though, allow her to do things no other Nightwalker can do. Able to see ghosts, her new job in a ghost ridden town shows her that something is not right, and her abilities might just be the death of her…
This is an urban fantasy, with a heroine whose mysterious origins might just be causing trouble, a golem, a gargoyle, and a number of demons, ghosts, Fae, shifters, and vampires to round it all out. The book ends with a cliffhanger, more of a book-hook, though it sort of completed the story, it’s also part of an ongoing storyline that continues through the series. It’s a first person point of view, and barring a small chapter in the middle from perspective of another character, it’s all from Kat’s point of view. There are multiple male characters, but none I’d cast as the male lead as yet, though one is edging out the others. It’s an action filled tale, with some battle scenes and a little on the dark side. Humour is light, and mostly on the snarky side of things.
All said and done, it’s an intriguing tale of mystery, with a big bad on the horizon, and the lives of some characters in the balance at the end. A number of questions have arisen, and the answers are net entirely forthcoming, making the book itself a little mysterious. The characters are interesting, with their own hidden depths, and if the term intriguing keeps coming to mind, it’s because it really is the best word to describe the book. It’s a magical tale, with some good world building, that is sure to be enjoyed by those who like their urban fantasy a little more epic in length!
I read the 3 star reviews and I understand where one was coming from. She really would be a dead heroine if it hadn’t been for outside forces. The main character seems to suffer from an overestimation of her skills. However, I found I didn’t dislike her. She has a complicated world to navigate due to her origins but I didn’t notice as much whinging as I’ve seen in other FMCs in this genre.
I knocked off a star because the whole “every dude is hot” thing going on. At first you don’t really notice it but as time wears on it becomes annoying. Mostly because it’s all so unnecessary. Like every time she looks at Henri there the thoughts of how hot he is for a metal man or a construct yada yada. I guess I felt it started to feel repetitive and unnecessary for the story.
I’m on the fence about whether I want to continue or not because overall the book was really well paced and unique. I liked the world she created and I really enjoyed Tris and Henri. My only problem with Kris and Mai is they seem like they lack the depth necessary to really connect. Not that these characters couldn’t be intriguing because they are but you barely get a sort of surface impression of them nothing very deep. I guess it’s a toss up at the moment.
Overall, I think most readers of UF series will enjoy this read. If you’re looking for sexy times or romance you won’t find it here. Based on her other books maybe it’ll turn into something but not in this book specifically. I got no real overtures of romance at all actually maybe because everyone was hot and she showed no real significant interest in any one person (maybe Henri? Don’t know). I say give it a whirl why the heck not you can always change your mind! Cheers!
This story has been really fun to read so far. Debbie Cassidy has a real gift for storytelling! This isn’t the story I thought it would be though. I expected a reverse harem with at least a little romance…or maybe even the prospect for future romance. I can’t tell you who may or may not be in her harem. I can’t tell if there is even going to be a harem. I’m not even sure if any of her love interests have been introduced yet.
Kat (FMC) is part of the Nightblood race; they’re essentially vampires. Except Kat has a secret, her father wasn’t a nighblood! Dun dun dun…species intermingling is illegal in this society. She can communicate with ghosts, she needs food and sleep, and she has some unidentified powers. If anyone finds out about her then her government will have her killed.
So when some trouble hits and her secret is at risk of being exposed her Grandfather sends her off to a secret town that’s hidden away and filled with ghosts. There are secrets to find, mysteries to solve, and kidnappings in progress. Kat and her bonded golem (Henry), along with her tiny, quirky, bonded gargoyle side kick (Triss), need to find a way to save the day.
I’m excited to start the next book. Onward!
- 👀Single, first person POV - 📖 urban fantasy - ❤️ reverse harem? Supposedly - 🌶 No steam, no spice, no romance, I’m unsure if her potential mates have even been introduced. This could be YA so far. - 🔥 No burn (slow burn hasn’t even begun)
A vampire, a golem, and a gargoyle walk into a bar… Well, they actually drive to a small town that is positively swimming with ghosts. Kat, the vampire… err, Nightblood… believes that her grandfather has sent her to the town because someone has discovered that she can communicate with ghosts, which would reveal her half-blood status and get her killed.
The world-building here is really good. The reader is thrown into the action and the aspects of the world and its supernatural inhabits are explained naturally, without the big chunks of exposition that sometimes happen in books like these. However, towards the middle of the book it just got to the point where there were TOO many types of beings, TOO much history, TOO many secrets… and honestly, too many potential love interests for Kat. There's Henri, Kris, naked guy, prison guy, and I feel like I'm missing someone. I was getting whiplash there.
The book doesn't really tie up any dangling threads, either. There's a dozen open plot points and a To Be Continued at the end of the book. I won't be picking up part two.
DNF 44% This just wasn't for me. The idea was interesting but I found a lot of the characters somewhat annoying, though I guess that ultimately comes back to the writing. What I found the most annoying was how many times her jealousy kept popping up. It honestly makes no sense to me. She's been with these two beings, one for most of her life and the other for over two years and never once has anyone flirted with them?
Also, Henri is her golum protector. He was literally created into being to be her sidekick and have her back, yet the very first assignment in this new place the head guy sticks her with the snarky flirty guy and wants Henri to stay home or go out on patrol with another girl (cue more jealousy). And they literally don't Bat an eye.
They just go with this plan even though they're a package deal and supposed to be together, it's dumb and I've had enough.
Started off a bit sllw, I'd just started and abruptly ended 2 books since they weren't to my taste. I was worried this wouldn't be either, but was pleasantly surprised. Kat is a Nightblood, part of a supernatural police force in a manner of speaking. She is sent to a remote town, with her golom and her gargoyle, to take care of a threat. Kat isn't sure what the threat is and the team that already stationed there doesn't either. Kat is afraid they know her secret so is worried they will turn her in. Well, someone knows her secret and will stop at nothing to get her. Very good book! I want the next in the series!!
Plenty of action, and one love interest has definitely been singled out. Zero spice though; this is all kicking butt and searching for bad guys. I loved how quick the story was, because some days I really appreciate authors who are brief and get to the point. Yes, some of it feels rushed (like exactly how quickly she’s willing to divulge her biggest secrets) and I didn’t really get the feeling of found family, it just told me the feeling was there right at the end. But it has a beginning, middle, and end, and it set up the world for a giant continuation with the big bad. There’s lots left to uncover and it ends on a cliffhanger sure to change how the next book plays out.
Kat, a Nightblood with a secret, is sent off to an unknown post at the request of her grandfather who is the leader of Nightwatch, a supernatural police force. As the story progresses a deeper mystery is afoot, a new perspective is gained, and releasing the tight hold on her secrets could be part of the solution to the problems she is facing. Debbi Cassidy’s A Ghost of a Chance is a lively urban fantasy read featuring a quirky yet lovable cast of characters. This book does end in a cliffhanger, so reader beware.
I read Kat's cousin, Indigo's story first so I mostly know about the Shadow Guard. Reading this story helped me better understand the novella that comes after Indigo's series when she works as a Nightwatch Guard.
Kat is an interesting person with secrets to hide. I don't know if she will have multiple love interests like Indigo does, but there are definitely some interesting men in her life. There are lots of mysteries yet to solve and a bad guy to deal with but not sure how that will be accomplished with the crazy cliffhanger at the end.
