This is so wholesome! I'm totally in love! I like it that Kagi is so open to his friend about being in love with his senpai, Hirano. Although, his friend Niibashi, may have been misunderstanding him at first, thinking it was only admiration. But I think Niibashi gets it, when Kagi announced that he wished to marry Hirano. And for what reason? SO THAT NO ONE CAN HAVE HIM! Oh, my poor heart can't take it. I want to scream!!!
And don't even talk to me about Kagi and Hirano's pure relationship. It's beyond friendship, but you can't say romantic tho. It's refreshing. Ah, I really like it! And the art is swoon-worthy too. I'm actually tired of saying 100% but, I felt the need to say it, when I genuinely believe that the art is really good. Ah, thanks Syou. I really enjoyed it! Gosh, this is why I love shounen ai. It's freaking wholesome and just right in all angles. I'm looking forward to Kagi's proper confession in the next volume tho! Nosebleeds.
Honestly, I don't really like Hirano and Kagiura. They're the spinoff couple from Sasaki & Miyano - which you probably know already if you've landed here. But just to reiterate: they started out as bonus comics at the ends of the regular volumes, with fudanshi Miyano shipping the two of them. Which is...not my favorite setup, and it always kind of annoyed me when they dragged the focus away from the couple I was invested in.
Sasaki & Miyano, quite honestly, isn't my favorite BL either; I enjoy it and find the anime utterly charming - and I do adore Sasaki - but a lot of what makes it popular is the light, unproblematic frothiness of the relationship, which leaves it a little insubstantial. Fun, yes. Top favorites, no not really.
We'll have to see how I feel after trying the other two light novels, then going back to the manga, because right now, I kinda think they work better in text than manga? Maybe I just...prefer Hachijo's thoughtfully crafted storytelling to Harusono's choppy joke of the day format. Because to my utter surprise, I really enjoyed this!
Part of it, I think, is giving Kagiura a lot more space to develop, with more room dedicated to his inner dialogue and the slow growth of his feelings for his older roommate. I've always really liked Hirano as a character; what I wasn't sold on was his kind of immaturely obsessed with him roommate. At least, that's how Kagiura felt to me in what I've read of the bonus comics and the first volume of the manga, which I'd kind of struggled through. I'll try them again to see if my opinion has changed with the slower development of their connection.
I still don't see romantic interest from Hirano at all. Even Kagiura, in this volume, is still wavering over whether he like likes Hirano, although there are definitely a lot more sparks of attraction and the type of sustained interest you don't have in someone who's just a friend. Hirano, on the other hand, is very fond of Kagiura but sees him as a younger brother whom he can pamper and nag and have good walks and conversations with.
I like that dynamic a lot, actually. I loved the summer days they spent at Kagiura's family home, with Hirano being wrapped into that big, bustling family that's so unlike his own. I do appreciate the parallels between Hirano's and Kagiura's views of their parents' relationships, and how they'd like that friendship-plus-romance to be a pattern for their future. But still. It feels pretty one-sided at this point.
Some of the scenes were a little slow - a lot of talk about studying, and Kagiura really struggling with paying attention in class or taking any sort of useful notes - but I liked the overall trajectory of this novel, and how it showed the roommates getting to know each other, then settling into a real friendship. Also liked the brief appearances by Sasaki, who is as delightful as always.
My favorite bits were the parts from Hirano's point of view when he was going to stay with Kagiura's family. In general, it could've used more of his perspective, but I guess anything happening at school (and therefore interactions with Sasaki & Miyano) would've overlapped too much with the main storyline, so a lot of it was about Kagiura or time spent in their dorm.
This was just a really cute and fun story. I loved both Hirano and Kagi so much. This book can really just be boiled down to cute boys being cute. It follows their daily lives in this dorm at their high school. If you're looking for romance like in Sasaki and Miyano you'll be a bit out of luck because this is the very beginning of their relationship so this story only barely gets to Kagi starting to think he likes Hirano more than in a friendship way. However, come for the relaxing and fun energy and you'll have a great time. I also loved seeing little glimpses of Sasaki because he seems a lot more intimidating than when he's with Miyano which was very fun to witness. Also seeing the fight that led to Sasaki and Miyano meeting mentioned within this story was also really fun for people who know their story. Overall a fun and quick light read.
They are so cute!! All I can think about when reading about Hirano and Kagiura is what Miyano's reaction would be to all these situations. The story is very sweet and wholesome it's basically just them being really close friends, but Kagi being like is this what being in love is??
Hirano apologized but was still chuckling. “Geez. If I ever get married, I hope I find someone who wears their heart on their sleeve like you do, Kagi.”
(even back then, this motherfucker was already thinking about marrying kagiura, but in the current manga timeline, it’s been months since this happened and he still hasn’t realized he’s in love with kagiura just as kagiura is in love with him, I’m so done with you, hirano taiga, fr.)
THEY’RE THE SLOWEST SLOW BURN IN SHOUJO MANGA ISTG,, BUT I DO LOVE THEM SO MUCH IS UNREAL 😭🫶🏻
So, I started reading this because I saw it was a novelization set before their manga, and I wanted to go into the manga knowing all the info that isn't mentioned in Sasaki and Miyano.
While it was certainly cute and all, I also found it rather boring. It's slice of life in a way that flows well in manga format, when you have the visualization to highlight a lot of the emotion and tranquility, but left me with no urgency to keep reading the book in a written medium. It took me about 5 days of actual reading to get through it (which is a lot for me, considering this book is so short - I usually finish books twice as long in half the time), but a couple of weeks to actually find the will to get those 5 days done. I was motivated to read by stubbornness rather than the novel itself.
I did like how we got to hear more about their families in the novelization, though. There is a tendency to gloss over those things in high school manga, so it was kind of nice to know they didn't just spawn out of Athena's brain, LOL.
I had some issues with the translation and formatting. First of all, why didn't they keep the honorifics? Especially since the bonus manga includes them. A lot is lost without those little details. I also wish there was a glossary and footnotes like Seven Seas do for their danmei... although that's a wish that goes unrealized in most cases lol
It was also formatted very strangely. We had what appeared to be a random assortment of page/section break indicators. It took a couple of switches for me to realize the diamonds signified different perspectives, although I fail to understand the necessity of it since it's also accompanied by a page break. One or the other is sufficient, IMO. But then we also had a couple of instances of random asterisks, and I still don't know what those signified for them to be there. I do wonder if there is some convention from Japanese light novels that I am unaware of at play, because otherwise it feels messy.
The manga is absolutely one of my favorites, this however felt like a chore to read. I'm not sure if it what the novelization writer or the translator, but it felt as if I was just reading patched together scenes. I feel they tried to emulate the style of the manga, which doesn't work well in a written form. Maybe if the chapters had been broken up better then I could have felt as if each scene was unique. This book is basically just all the moments where Kagiura was falling in love with Hirano, other than that its hard to give a synopsis of what else this book is about. "Kagiura moves into his highschool dorm, meets his roommate, struggles with studying, invites roommate over for summer break where they do fireworks, then there's a haunted house." And then out of nowhere its insinuated Hanzawa has an issue with gay people, nevermind his brothers are and all his friends are too, but Kagiura isn't great at reading people so its understandable he'd think that Hanzawa is trying to push people away when he's secretly pushing people together. And it was only mentioned in the last few pages, like maybe that would have been a great plot point if mentioned in the first chapter. I hate to say it, but I felt like I was reading a fanfic that was posted via tumblr blog entries. Not terrible, but I've read better writing on AO3.
I think this light novel was technically written before the H&K manga, but I feel like it's not a necessary read. Pretty much everything played out exactly like how I could have inferred based on the manga and bonus chapters. It was admittedly nice to see a bit more detail about the characters' daily lives and what the school is like. However, I think a some of the intricacies of Japanese high school (or at least how it's portrayed in popular media) were a little lost on me.
All that said, I definitely still enjoyed this quick read. As a fan of slow burn romances this definitely had lots of cute moments as Hirano and especially Kagiura develop stronger and stronger feelings for each other. I would have liked a tiny bit more introspection on sexuality/identity/labels but that's pretty typical for BL. I did love how Kagiura bases his relationship goals on his parents, and I'll always enjoy the trope of falling in love with a best friend. As I said, I don't think this novel is required reading, but it's short and cute, so if you like the rest of the Sasaki/Miyano-verse you may as well give this one a read.
Hirano and Kagiura is the light novel look back at first meetings and behind the scenes of the titular characters relationship that was first hinted at in Sasaki and Miyano.
Overall I enjoyed this book! It was super light, minimal drama and angst and just hit on the wholesome slow burn of their relationship. I will admit I had hoped this volume book would diver deeper into their romantic relationship as light novels add a lot more flexibility and into the mind of the characters. Unfortunately we didn’t really get that this time! What we did get was additional details to their relationship that did spark joy.
I gave this a 3/5 mainly because while I enjoyed it, I would not read it again and it did not wow me. Additionally I would not recommend this for someone that does not know the characters or story of this universe as a lot of it was assumed knowledge of the wider story!
I enjoyed this too short novel about Hirano and Kagiura. In it, you will learn more about Kagiura, who does not really feature in Sasaki and Miyano. I especially like the chapter when they go together to spend the summer break with Kagiura's family, and would have liked that to be more fully developed and explored. Kagi is falling in love with Hirano, but Hirano is slow to respond the same - yet. More in future manga? I sure hope so!
I now understand why Kagiura has marriage on the brain in regard to Hirano. Because man oh man, if someone treated me the way Hirano treats Kagiura?? I’d fall in love when them immediately.
This novelization was so freaking CUTE!! Getting to see how Hirano and Kagiura meet and seeing how their friendship blossoms and deepens, and witnessing a crush develop. For such a short novel, it was done so beautifully and didn’t seem rushed at all.
I LOVE THESE BOYS SO MUCH!!!! I ran to this when I saw it in store because waiting 3 months for the manga to update kills me. After reading this, I feel even more inclined to say Hirano is in DENIAL. Absolutely.
Knocked off a star for the writing. It’s simple and that’s okay, but it seems like there are a lot of missed opportunities to show not tell. It’s a light novel so I’m not too disappointed by it, but I also think descriptions could’ve been fleshed out a bit more.
Sweet, sweet short novel that cured my (awfully persistent) reading slump. Sasaki and Miyano was truly a treat of a good slow burn young love that all of the characters deserve their own story.
Some parts of the book were included in the Sasaki and Miyano anime (series and movie) that were truly enjoyable, but I could use an OVA or short anime length treat of the two.
Kinda cute but not super eventful. This is a slice of life series, but it was more mundane than I’m used to. There’s a few interesting moments of self reflection on the early stages of their relationship, but nothing happened that makes this a recommended from me. Kinda bummed because I enjoy the manga series for these two a lot.
I was hoping this would be a whole new storyline with Hirano and Kagiura. Instead it went over the events of the manga from their first meeting up through the school festival. It was nice to read from both of their perspectives. I give the "okay" rating for all the long run on sentences, and the parts were a little confusing due to lack of description/setting.
I didn’t like the first 40ish pages because it felt like I was just rereading what was in the manga but it had a pleasant second half. I appreciated the extra details that were just one off comments in the manga turned into big plot points in the light novel.
Cute and helps set the scene for the manga, although you don't have to read this before jumping into the main series. It was nice to get a better idea of Hirano's perspective when it comes to Kagiura, and I was delighted to see Sasaki pop up!
I said I won’t rate LN (or manga) on this account anymore but Sasaki and Miyano + Hirano and Kagiura are exceptions, they’re just too cute!! //I’m not gonna bother rating the manga anymore though, just the LN adaptations :) ——4.25 Stars
Such a cute peek into the lives of Hirano and Kagiura as dorm mates! Lovely one short series of stories for the series! Do not expect a masterpiece of literature, it's written as point of views between the two characters
This is complete garbage, I have nothing good to say about this book. The writing is SO incredibly clunky and the pov switch’s are way to often and completely random. Both of these characters are dry and 2 dimensional. This is ass, go read a yoru sumino book if you want to read a good light novel
