Rate this book
The crew has split. Toby has been placed in charge of a small group headed north to combat the Great Lakes Navy whose M.O. is to acquire all remaining resources and peddle flesh. Americans young and weak have become their currency, their objects of dominance. Ian and Kinsey are still on mission to get to D.C. accompanied with new recruits from Mingo Junction and Albuquerque. Both groups trying to restore a little bit of sanity to a world that won’t cooperate.
While Toby finds bands of fighters still ignorant to the existence of intact portions of the military. Nor did they have comprehension to the invasion force that threatens their very right to exist. Ian and Kinsey in the east are finding beasts of a whole different nature.
The invasion is on in full force, American’s are under manned and being assailed on all sides. Infected continually plague their movements as evil floods their city with well-armed yet undisciplined warriors hell bent on killing every American who survived the plague. Making it the responsibility of the very few survivors left to stop the evil on all fronts.
United we could stand and divided we will fall making it imperative that we stay INDIVISIBLE.

Joseph Hansen

Joseph Hansen (1923–2004) was an American author of mysteries. The son of a South Dakota shoemaker, he moved to a California citrus farm with his family in 1936. He began publishing poetry in the New Yorker in the 1950s, and joined the editorial teams of gay magazines ONE and Tangents in the 1960s. Using the pseudonyms Rose Brock and James Colton, Hansen published five novels and a collection of short stories before the appearance of Fadeout (1970), the first novel published under his own name.

The book introduced street-smart insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter, a complex, openly gay hero who grew and changed over the series’s twelve novels. By the time Hansen concluded the series with A Country of Old Men (1990), Brandstetter was older, melancholy, and ready for retirement. The 1992 recipient of the Private Eye Writers of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Hansen published several more novels before his death in 2004.

Note: These are part of a series. Events build off each other. These do not stand alone and must be listened to in order. Also, this review may contain spoilers to previous books.

Ian & Kinsey are trying to secure an airport while Toby, Mara, Pint & Scar work to overthrow another homegrown dictator. All as newly conscripted military - which gives them more resources, but also more rules to follow.

I adore the way that Toby, Mara, Pint & Scar work together. Toby jokingly refers to himself as an uncle and that's very much what the experienced operators become to these young adults. The banter back & forth brings some levity and humanity to very tense situations.

You know those authors that kill off a character only to bring them back and leave you rolling your eyes. Not here. I was literally screaming at my phone (as if Hansen can actually hear me and change his book) that he could not kill off one of my favorite characters. I’m so distraught and waiting for the “just kidding, they’re really OK”. But it never came and I’m totally gutted.

This is part of what makes this book and this series so good. It’s real, it’s ugly, and despite many victories the heroes aren’t safe.

Like the other books - there are several action packed completed missions/ops. The pacing and maneuvering is great. It was a wild ride and I listened to it in one day. As there is still more of the country to protect, the story definitely isn’t over.

Narration:
Andrew B Wehrlen continues to be easy to listen to. The series has an enormous cast of characters and he gives them all a unique voice.

The third book of Ian's story and the ninth in the 5 Roads to Texas series doesn't disappoint. These characters are fantastic and the story is masterfully told. It keeps you riveted to the page. I read this in a matter of hours. Our group of characters have split up each with missions they deem important. The author throws you right into a tailspin early on in the book. I won't give away anything here but let's just say I never saw it coming. Great read start to finish.

I just can't get over this book. From start to finish it is non-stop, heart action, laughter, and heartbreak. I love this entire series, all the authors are stupid talented, but this book... it broke me. Joseph Hansen has created a story that lives deep inside my heart and I don't think I will ever get over the words I read here. All 8 books are leading to this moment... and it's AWESOME! I can't wait to keep reading more and more in this crazy adventure these 5 authors have created for us!

One of the best ZPOC series ever

I have to best honest, way back when I first begun the 5 roads books I had very low expectations. Within the first few chapters I was totally hooked. Great characters, adrenalin pounding action and zombie/bandit gorefests throughout. I can't recommend these books highly enough. More please...hurry.

Another great one

Fun to read with a lot of action and blood and guts fighting. The characters are awesome and they trade a lot of witty dialogue back and forth. There was a surprise that shocked me and the author left one whale of a cliffhanger.

Hated the grammar and sentence structure. Story was ok

It was really hard to read. Had a lot of grammatical errors that made it hard to read through smoothly. It took me 3 times longer than normal to read because i had to question every other sentence.

Not to get into spoilers, but the book takes a shocking turn rather quickly. Another great story in the 5 Roads series. Cannot wait for the next installment.

What happened? Bad editing. Misspelled words.

I still like the characters and the series but the numerous errors were distracting. Sargent? Ummmm no. SERGEANT. Just one of many.
Overall though the plot was good and kept me engaged enough to finish it
